Farmers buying conservatively into drones Prices can range from $2,500 to $20,000 By Josh Greschner Staff Reporter

Slowly but surely, drones are becoming an important piece of farm equipment. Drones used for agricultural imaging are remote -controlled, unmanned aerial vehicles with small propellers, cameras and sensors. Markus Weber of Landview Drones was recently in North Battleford giving a class at the Battlefords Agricultural Society grounds. Landview Drones offer classes that include flying drones and learning the knowledge require-

ments for Transport Canada certification, which is necessary for operating certain drones over farms since it’s considered commercial use. “You want to check out a field and canola is deep, you can’t see past 20 yards,” Weber said. “With [a drone] you can see the whole field.” Weber teaches, among other things, agricultural drone uses and mapping workflows. Landview Drones has spent the last few weeks in a number of places in the prairies, and upcoming courses will be held in Alberta.

Classes vary between two and 20 students. Most are farmers, some are hobbyists. Some people are professional drone pilots. They map land for farmers, then sell the maps. Weber said prices for such mapping can be three to five dollars per acre. For his courses, Weber, who is a farmer, brings a number of different drone models. Weber said drones are like smart phones. Some models feature a compass, GPS, barometer, accelerometer and forward obstacle detection. Continued on Page 3
