Creating a wellness sanctuary within the comfort of home has become a hallmark of luxury living. By blending modern amenities with holistic elements, these spaces provide the benefits of relaxation and convenience. Wellness spaces also signify a profound shift towards valuing self-care and well-being in daily life.
Here, we find insight from Twin Cities pros in high-end home design.
Many homeowners are inspired by their travels to design luxurious spa spaces at home.
“Our clients travel frequently to resorts all over the country and based their home design off one of their favorite resorts
so they could experience it daily,” said John Klimmek, project manager at Gordon James.
This desire to recreate a resort-like experience led to the inclusion of unique features, like a staircase Zen garden, which serves as a tranquil transitional space between the entertainment area and wellness center. The Zen garden, visible from the pool deck, offers a greenhouse feel, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces.
Holistic wellness is a key component of these custom spaces, with features designed to promote both physical and mental well-being. Swanson Home’s summer Artisan home included a matte black cold plunge tub, Himalayan salt wall sauna, steam shower, and a juice bar. These elements cater to the growing
emphasis on self-care and mental well-being.
“Clients enjoy at-home wellness areas because they provide a convenient and personalized space to relax, rejuvenate, and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” says Lindsey Swanson, creative director of Swanson Homes and Carbon 6 Interiors.
Robbie Chermak with Pillar Homes echoes this sentiment, highlighting the inclusion of cutting-edge exercise equipment and an infrared sauna enhanced by a Himalayan pink salt wall in their summer Artisan home.
“The therapeutic properties of the Himalayan pink salt wall purify the body and mind, reducing stress and inflammation,” shared Chermak.
This blend of modern technology and ancient healing traditions creates a haven for rejuvenation.
For many homeowners, wellness spaces are designed with the entire family in mind. Chermak emphasizes that wellness areas can be tailored to meet the specific needs of each family member — whether that’s a workout studio or athletic court for fitness goals or a steam shower or dry sauna to decompress.
The uniqueness of a custom wellness space lies in its tailored design. Every
architectural detail, material choice, and finish is meticulously selected to reflect the homeowner’s style and preferences. Klimmek highlights Gordon James’ summer Artisan home where an entire wing of the house was dedicated to wellness activities, featuring its own entrance, lockers, pool changing room, yoga room, and spa lounge. “The clients and guests really have it all with the sauna, steam shower, and workout space all within the same area,” says Klimmek. This level of personalization ensures that the space meets the specific needs and desires of the homeowners.
Designing a cohesive space is essential for creating a luxurious experience. Swanson’s latest project featured a combination of therapeutic and recreational elements, such as an athletic court and golf simulator, located near the sauna and juice bar. “The proximity of these wellness features caters to both fitness and recreational needs, creating a comprehensive and unparalleled wellness experience,” Swanson explains. Now, the homeowners can enjoy a variety of activities without leaving the comfort of their own home
As the demands of modern life continue to grow, having a personalized sanctuary at home offers an invaluable refuge, promoting not just physical health but also mental and emotional balance. These spaces highlight the transformative power of thoughtful design. In essence, these wellness spaces are not just amenities; they are essential investments in a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.
Imagine transforming your home into a sanctuary of relaxation and luxury, where every day can feel like a spa day. A growing trend in home wellness: luxury at-home saunas, offering the ultimate in relaxation and rejuvenation. In the realm of interior design, every piece of furniture and decor has the potential to be a masterpiece. Transform your signature space into an art gallery where each element tells its own story and contributes to a harmonious, stunning whole. Choose a unique or elaborate headboard design that serves as the focal point of your bedroom. Whether upholstered in luxurious velvet, adorned with intricate carvings, or featuring a bold pattern, a striking headboard can transform your bed into a work of art.
Light fixtures are the jewelry of your home. Select chandeliers, pendant lights, or sconces that are both functional and beautiful. A chandelier dripping with crystals, a modern pendant with a sleek design, or a sconce with an artistic twist can illuminate your space while serving as a standout piece of decor.
Don’t overlook the impact of smaller decorative objects. Sculptures, vases, and other art pieces can add character and interest to your space. A hand-blown glass vase, a ceramic sculpture, or a collection of vintage books can be the perfect finishing touches that make your home uniquely yours.
Your bed is a canvas, and your bedding and pillows are the brushstrokes. Choose striking colors, intricate patterns, and luxurious fabrics to create a layered, textured look. A richly patterned duvet cover, velvet throw pillows, or a handwoven blanket can add a touch of artistry to your bedroom.
Since many of us select neutral couches, a statement armchair in your living room or study offers the perfect opportunity to draw the eye and add a pop of personality. Look for pieces with vibrant upholstery or unexpected details like tufting or nailhead trim.
The foundation of any design, the perfect rug can tie your room together and stand out on its own. Find the right pattern, pile, and material for your lifestyle without compromising on style.

How would you describe your team’s approach to a new project?
Our team approaches every project with transparency and works diligently to set the appropriate expectations up front regarding project costs and timelines. We spend a significant amount of time during design preparing our projects for construction so everything is efficiently packaged for the build phase. Additionally, we are always mindful of the client’s budget throughout the course of the project. We work very closely with our clients to help them get the most for their investment!
What are the most important elements of a successful build team?
At BDH, it starts with having an internal team of people that is aligned with our core values. Additionally, our build process is very collaborative. Over time, we’ve
built great relationships with some of the best architects, designers, and craftspeople in the industry. The design team is hand-picked for every project based on the design aspirations of the homeowner. Most importantly, we all have a great time along the way!
What do you enjoy most about building custom homes?
We are very customer-focused with everything we do, so first and foremost, we enjoy building lasting relationships with our customers. To see our customers’ faces the day they move in is very special to us. We also get excited whenever we have the opportunity to build a home with a unique room or specialty feature that you don’t typically see such as a cigar lounge, golf simulator, etc. It is incredibly rewarding to help create a space for someone that reflects their passions.
What are some of your favorite trends and styles in new construction?
Modern English, transitional, and contemporary homes are architectural styles that pique our interest. It is fascinating to see modern details woven into more traditional forms of architecture.

What sets your company apart?
What sets us apart is our comprehensive approach as a designbuild firm. We seamlessly integrate architectural design, interior design, and construction management, ensuring that each aspect of your project works in harmony. This holistic approach not only streamlines the process but also creates a cohesive vision and execution, resulting in a more efficient, effective, and personalized experience for our clients. By blending these disciplines, we deliver homes that are not only beautifully designed but also expertly built, with every detail meticulously managed from start to finish.
How would you describe your team’s approach to a new project?
Our team’s approach to a new project is rooted in a deep understanding and respect for our clients' needs and desires. We begin by actively listening to what our clients vision and what they value most. This allows us to tailor our expertise and knowledge precisely to their needs. Our goal is to transform their aspirations into a tangible reality, ensuring every aspect aligns with their dream home. By combining thoughtful listening with professional insight, we strive to deliver results that not only meet but exceed our clients' expectations.

City Homes, LLC
REBECCA REMICK
What do you wish more people knew about your company?
I wish more people knew about our commitment to sustainability. City Homes has taken substantial steps toward becoming an environmentally sustainable builder. We have signed partnership agreements with Energy Star and Zero Energy Ready Homes. We just finished a new construction home that was constructed as an all-electric, geothermal, solar-paneled home with a SPAN electrical panel, and it received a very impressive HERS rating of -21 on a scale of zero to 150.
What are the most important elements of a successful build team?
Strong leadership is essential to inspire, motivate, and guide a team. A team should work collaboratively, leveraging diverse skills and expertise, all with the goal of delivering highquality results. The team needs to be organized and proactive to manage resources and schedules and can be adaptable and flexible to face unexpected challenges and changes.
What are some of your favorite trends and styles in new construction?
My favorite trend shaping new construction today is minimalism. I see clients wanting simplicity, functionality, and sustainability. We are being asked to design spaces that are more flexible and multifunctional for their adaption as the family ages. Homebuyers want to maximize their home’s usability without excess, and they are prioritizing quality over quantity. The row home is a great answer to this trend.
Detail Homes, Inc.
CHRIS VAN KLEI & BEN RICHTER
How did you get started in the building industry?
With one of us having a background in design and construction and the other in finance, we decided to try our hand at flipping a home in 2006, and the rest is history. We have grown into a talented team of 12 and are fortunate to work with some of the best architects and designers in town. We still have the same passion for the industry today that they had at the start 18 years ago.
What sets your company apart?
Being fun! There are many fantastic build firms in town (we think the Twin Cities puts out some of the best homes in the country), and we do it all while having a good time. Building can be stressful, but there’s no reason you can’t laugh and have a good time while doing it. Becoming lifelong friends with our clients is the best part of the job.
What are some of your favorite trends and styles in new construction?
Quality materials. It’s amazing how people are more focused on better quality materials over size now. This is something Detail Homes has always pushed for, but it has moved to the top of almost every client’s list. While modern is still hot, we are seeing more and more people moving back to traditional style, not only in finishes, but in floor plans. While open-concept is still here, the definition of spaces is very prevalent.

Pillar Homes Partner, Inc.
KC CHERMAK
How did you get started in the building industry?
Our team has a passion for architecture. This led us to harness that passion for others to enjoy. We take pride in converting design and architectural ideas into reality to shape the landscape of the homes we build and enrich the lives of our homeowners.
How would you describe your team’s approach to a new project?
Our years of experience are the foundation upon which we build a dream home. This deeprooted knowledge and instinct allows us to anticipate client needs, overcome challenges, and deliver exceptional results. From understanding the nuances of local building codes to selecting the finest materials and craftsmanship, our expertise ensures a seamless and rewarding building process.
What are the most important elements of a successful build team?
The building team needs to have a clear vision that matches the client, creativity that is integrated with building science, and most importantly, open communication. We thrive on the desire to perfectly convey our client’s vision into their home.
How did you get started in the building industry?
I started in the family business, mainly remodeling homes. I loved turning old outdated homes into newer up-todate spaces that families could grow in. Ultimately, I turned to homebuilding as I found how exciting it could be to create something from nothing.
What sets your company apart?
We have continued to maintain a small company that listens to what clients are trying to accomplish. In a building environment where people have every option available, we help navigate that process through budgeting, design, and livability. Our team ultimately cares about what our clients want and work hard every day to try to make their dream home come to life.
What inspires your work?
I grew up around building, and have loved the dynamics of chaos and building since I was young. I enjoy seeing a plan come together and working through challenges that come up along the way. The idea that we can create something that families turn into their home inspires me.
How do you bring a client’s vision to life?
We listen. So many people come into building a new home without ever being part of the process before. It can be a lot, so we listen to what their goals are and try to work with them to achieve their goals. We work with talented architects, designers, and tradespeople to help communicate what our clients’ needs are and bring them to life.
JOHN DALY & SVEN GUSTAFSON
How would you describe your team’s approach to a new project?
Each new project is marked by a combination of personalized attention and systematic precision. We begin by deeply understanding our client’s vision, needs, and lifestyle. This initial phase of listening and learning is crucial, as it sets the foundation for the entire project. Our team, consisting of skilled professionals with years of experience, then collaborates closely to create a detailed plan that aligns with the client’s aspirations and our high standards of quality. Throughout the project, we maintain open communication, ensuring that every detail is meticulously managed and executed. This approach allows us to not only meet but hopefully exceed our clients’ expectations, delivering a home that is both a masterpiece of design and a reflection of their personality.
How do you bring a client’s vision to life?
A deeply collaborative and tailored process. It starts with an in-depth conversation where we actively listen to our client’s desires, preferences, and lifestyle needs. This understanding becomes the blueprint of our design. Our team, combining their expertise in architecture, design, and craftsmanship, then works diligently to translate this vision into reality. We use state-of-the-art technology and materials, ensuring every aspect of the home reflects the client’s personality and the highest standards of quality. Regular updates and client involvement throughout the project ensure that the final product not only matches but often surpasses the original vision, resulting in a home that is as unique as its owner.
What sets your company apart?
Our meticulous focus on the process and the unparalleled expertise of our team. Our history in the industry, spanning generations, has allowed us to refine a building process that is both detailoriented and customer-focused. Each member of our team brings a depth of experience and a commitment to excellence, ensuring that every project is not just a construction but a carefully crafted home.
CHAD HANSON, RYAN HANSON, & VINCE BIRDSLEY
What sets your company apart?
We are a small family-owned company backed by an extremely talented team of individuals who put a great deal of value in the relationships and bonds we create with our clients and our subcontractors. Since our inception, our sole commitment has been to create sustainably built, high-performance, healthy homes that are architecturally design-forward. While the design aesthetic of a home is obviously very important, so are the products we use in every home. While not all our clients have energy efficiency or indoor air quality at the top of their wish list, at a minimum, we educate them on how minor changes can make their home more sustainable and longer lasting.
What are the most important elements of a successful build team?
We have made a conscious choice to only hire people, partners, vendors, and subcontractors who truly love what they do for a living. Developing lasting friendships with our employees and trade partners has been so important in our ability to build a high-quality home. Their unique passion for building amazing homes is evident in their attention to detail and craftsmanship, which people have come to expect in all our homes.
What inspires and influences your work?
My work is deeply inspired by my father, who moved to the United States from Greece to start his own business. He taught me the value of solid craftsmanship and the importance of even the smallest details. This appreciation for history and architecture drives me to preserve historical integrity and authenticity. I believe every element in a home should have its own story — like the time we imported old wooden crates from the Asian spice trade to add a unique touch to a kitchen.
What sets your company apart?
For TC Homebuilders, a luxury home isn’t about the dollars spent or having the latest trends; it’s about the details. It’s about the
subtle, yet significant elements that each have their own story to tell. It’s about going the extra mile to preserve historical integrity and authenticity in a sustainable, environmentally friendly manner.
How would you describe your team’s approach to a new project?
Our company is built on a foundation of superior craftsmanship, attention to detail, and sustainable practices. We don’t just meet standards and specifications; we exceed them. Every project is approached with a commitment to quality and minimizing environmental impact. The true luxury of a home can be seen in the smallest elements, and we ensure that each detail contributes to a masterpiece.
What do you enjoy most about building custom homes?
Our team is most proud when we see our client's reactions to their finished projects. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional quality and service, and challenge one another to always be one step ahead.

What do you enjoy most about remodeling homes?
Blending existing spatial elements and home features with creative new solutions to surpass our clients’ expectations.
How would you describe your team’s approach to a new project?
Each project is unique. We are often included at the earliest of stages, previewing properties prior to purchase to provide our feasibility expertise. Before determining our approach to each project, we seek to understand our clients’ goals and their priorities.
How do you bring a client’s vision to life?
We work alongside architecture, providing cost analysis and modeling along with 3D conceptualization.
What inspires and influences your work?
We are a custom homebuilder that is inspired by natural landscapes and existing architecture, and how we can reimagine good bones. Whether building new or renovating, we look for ways to honor the past by inspiring the future.
MATT EASTMAN, SANDY MAHONEY, & NATHAN CARLSON
How did you get started in remodeling?
We got our start in the industry at a large commercial contractor in the Twin Cities. That experience helped shape Highmark’s principles and built a desire for a more personal, creative connection with clients. Our success as a custom remodeler and home builder is directly tied to the collaborative relationship with our homeowners.
What inspires and influences your work?
Inspiration is everywhere — from the places we visit, photos online, fashion trends, and just the everyday world around us. But neither inspiration nor current trends
matter if they don’t resonate with our clients. At Highmark, we want to know what inspires our clients.
What are some of your favorite trends and styles in remodeling?
We are more attached to our homes than ever before. So, we want the greatest experiences from them, whether that’s connecting outdoor spaces for more entertaining, adding wood-burning fireplaces for better ambiance, or building a home office to make working from home even more rewarding.
What are some of your favorite trends and styles in remodeling?
Sustainability is a hot topic, one that we’ve always had care and attention for. Preserving old doors and hardware and using natural materials when possible, recreating custom millwork, and elevating finishes to stand the test of time — hopefully, for another 100 years.
How do you bring a client’s vision to life?
We are collaborative from the onset, pulling from client inspiration and making recommendations utilizing decades of industry experience and Jkath standards that are guideposts for each project.
What sets your company apart?
At Jkath, we’re committed to timeless interiors, exceptional quality, and impeccable craftsmanship. With our team of design and building experts, we reimagine homes to function for today’s demands while honoring the charm and history that makes them unique. In the end, you get spaces tailored for the way you live, with design elements that transcend fads — just timeless, beautiful spaces for everyday living.
MINDA RINGDAHL & JEN STOCKWELL
What inspires and influences your work?
Texture and color, maximizing natural light, connecting the indoors and outdoors in meaningful ways. As our society reinforces busy-ness and productivity, we need our homes to provide a sense of rest and calm.
What do you enjoy most about remodeling homes?
I believe remodeling is fundamentally an act of optimism. It asks a person to see the potential of a space despite its current condition, and to trust in the power of a vision and process to carry it through — from the first inkling to the finished space, without neglecting any detail.
How would you describe your team’s approach to a new project?
With every remodeling project we take on, we examine the original architecture of the home and overlay it with the personality and lifestyle goals of our clients. We begin each project with an intensive planning phase to explore what inspires our clients, understand their pain points and vision for their space, and determine the feasibility and cost implications of the concepts we develop.

This thoughtful remodel transformed a tired midcentury modern home that had undergone another renovation in the 1980s, by enhancing its original architectural features and infusing it with new energy and a better flow suited for modern living and entertaining.
• This stylish renovation encompassed the main floor of an iconic midcentury modern home located in the charming neighborhood of Tyrol Hills. The goal of the structural rework of the primary living spaces was to improve the connection between the entertaining areas and highlight the indoor-outdoor views.
• One of the homeowners’ frustrations with the existing home was the original 1950s fireplace, a towering 18-foot feature that locked up the main-floor layout and separated the kitchen from the living and dining rooms. The primary suite was also poorly laid out, with wasted space and a maze-like ensuite bath.
• By removing the structural fireplace, the team was able to relocate the kitchen to the front
of the home, raise the height of the entry ceilings for greater volume, and improve the flow throughout the entire main level.
• The kitchen's new design showcases Gaggenau luxury appliances and a striking double-island concept. The sintered stone countertops were fabricated with sustainable materials for a low-carbon footprint, while the sculptural design creates a unique focal point for the space.
• Other must-see features in this Euro-moderndesigned home include a water-vapor fireplace, custom cabinetry by Northland Woodworks, and bespoke concrete elements by Living Stone Concrete Design.
• Vibrant wallcoverings, statement lighting, and white oak flooring are the finishing touches on this beautiful remodel.

This century-old Victorian home received a respectful remodel that paid homage to its historic architectural style while thoughtfully updating it for modern living.
• As new owners of an old home located in a beautiful historic neighborhood, the clients of this remodel were careful to respect the home’s original character when it came to adding the space and modern amenities their family needed.
• A combination of stucco and cedar lap siding on the exterior echoes the home’s original construction, while new windows for the addition were designed to match the existing mix of Palladian and stained-glass windows to maintain the home’s authentic aesthetic.
• The owners wanted to highlight and enhance the home’s charming woodwork and classic floor plan, while blending the new areas with the old in a way that felt evolutionary, not revolutionary. The remodel opened up the traditionally smaller, segmented spaces into areas designed for modernday living, including an expansive kitchen outfitted for entertaining, a transitional mudroom, convenient laundry access, and a home o ce for remote work.
• Cabinetry, framing, and millwork were thoughtfully considered and compared against the traditional architectural styles of the day, while antique hardware and lighting choices were essential when it came to infusing new spaces with the appropriate ambiance.
• Natural organic tones and high-quality finishes highlight the historic architectural elements at an artisanal level. Favorite features include the tiled “stove cove” and range surround in the kitchen, statement mudroom floor with its intricate custom basketweave pattern, and plumbing fixtures full of nostalgic personality (such as the reproduction high-tank toilet complete with a pull chain in the main-level powder room).
• Guided by historical photos provided by the clients, the remodel not only added the extra space they were looking for, but also allowed for the restoration of many of the home’s original architectural features as well.

Perched high on Minnehaha Parkway, this century-old home was thoughtfully updated for modern living, from structural and storage solutions to custom finishes and signature details.
• Originally built over 100 years ago, this 1916 home located in the Lynnhurst neighborhood of Minneapolis was more than ready for a makeover. With uneven floors, rotten windows and stucco, and a non-functional fireplace that ran from the basement through the attic, there were several major structural issues that needed to be addressed, and the homeowners were also looking for more storage and entertaining solutions as well.
• All four levels of the house were completely gutted and remodeled, showcasing the design-build team’s ability to utilize existing square feet to encompass five bedrooms and bathrooms without the need for an addition.
• Floors were reframed to be level, windows replaced, and new roofing and vertical panel James Hardie siding installed. The woodburning fireplace was obsolete and removed to create space for a modern-day HVAC system. The house was updated with all new mechanicals, electrical wiring, plumbing pipes, and spray foam insulation.
• The formal dining room was transformed into a larger kitchen space, while the previous kitchen was converted into a mudroom and powder room. The existing attached single-car garage was also removed, and a new detached garage built in its stead, which provides space for two cars plus additional storage.
• New millwork was designed to resemble the original but with a more interesting shape, and the home’s original beveled glass doors were also renewed and reused to further preserve the home’s historic character.
• Organic elements such as solid white oak floors, custom birch cabinetry, and custom concrete — found in the fireplace surround, kitchen backsplash and countertops, and bathroom floor tiles — create a timeless sense of sophistication, while a sauna and cold plunge room are the perfect modernday additions to this historic renovation.

• This large-scale remodel not only encompassed the entirety of the 8,111-square-foot house, but also included the addition of a new 2,247-square-foot barn, which features a lo living space, bathroom, gym, and balcony, along with an alpaca stall.
• The living room is now light and bright, thanks to white-painted walls and windows and a stately stone fireplace, while an intricate series of exposed dark wood beams complete with custom steel strap details provides high contrast and adds visual interest overhead.
• Located a step down from the main-floor living space, the billiard room features exposed white oak beams, a brick floor set in an elegant hardwood pattern, and moody bronze walls to help create a warm and cozy environment perfect for evening games of pool.
• The sunroom features the best views in the home, thanks to expansive floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides. A so blue ceiling with a subtle bird pattern echoes the sky, while an array of comfortable seating is situated to allow the views of the abundant pine forest to steal the show.
• Nostalgic design elements reflect both the owners’ love of classic design (such as the tin ceiling tiles in the kitchen) and their lives spent together: The floor in the powder bath is hand-set with thousands of handpicked pennies dated the year the couple met, while the custom light pendants in the lower-level bar are made from bottles of their favorite tequila.
• The lower level also features a gaming area, sauna, and workout space, while outdoor amenities include a firepit, grilling area, putting green, and tennis/pickleball court, along with a swim spa and hot tub.
