Whether you're a seasoned strategist or a complete beginner, this is the perfect place to improve your game, meet new people, and enjoy friendly competition. Cozy Hour for Teens and Young Adults
It's the perfect time of year to cozy up in the library. Teens and young adults (ages 14-35) are invited to come for a cozy hour after the library closes. We will have board games, late book check out, and a craft. In the spirit of hygge ("hooga"), a Scandinavian concept of coziness, we will gather around the fireplace for a warm drink and a sweet treat. Invite your friends and feel free to come dressed in something cozy. Es la época perfecta del año para entrar en calor en la biblioteca. Getting started
Settlement of the West in the late 1800s was influenced by many factors: miners looking for precious metals; ranchers providing meat, grains, and vegetables; and the railroad, which served both. Railroads became lifelines that carried ore, supplies, and people. Built in 1882, Fryingpan was the first settlement on the south side of the Fryingpan River. It was created to house the men working the charcoal kilns that still remain today. Look for the bear paws on the sidewalks around town and start your tour near Town Hall and Basalt Chamber’s red caboose.
1. The Wye
101 Midland Ave (Town Hall)
| The triangle of land in the center of Basalt, where the red caboose sits, was the original Wye, where three tracks joined, allowing trains to turn around. By 1886 Aspen Junction (presentday Basalt) began to form with
a “boarding house, general store and seven saloons.” The town was a railroad camp, housing crews needed for the construction of the Colorado Midland Railroad.
2. Colorado Midland Railway
101 Midland Ave, closer to Midland Spur | In 1883, the Colorado Midland Railroad (CMR) was created to run from Colorado Springs to Buena Vista. In 1885, the CMR began tunneling between towns, linking east and west Colorado. The railroad was constructed to serve the growing mining industry and to efficiently ship agricultural products.
3. Colorado Midland Depot
137 Midland Ave (Alpine Bank) | Constructed in 1886, the railroad depot was the first passenger loading area and mail station in the central Roaring Fork Valley. Many newly arrived residents spent their first night on the benches of the depot. As the transportation hub of the valley,
the depot was a source of pride and the center of the town. In 1892, fire devastated the western end of town, completely destroying the depot, which was quickly rebuilt.
4. The Railroad Hotel
165 Midland Ave (Tempranillo) | The Colorado Midland Hotel was constructed in 1896 to service the growing needs of Basalt. Originally owned by Dr. Thompson and Mr. Bear, the hotel had 10 sleeping rooms, a dining hall, and a saloon. Rumor has it that ladies of the night could often be seen up and down the stairs as the saloon below provided ample customers. Throughout the Quiet Years the hotel had many owners and uses, but in 1965, as the upper-valley ski areas began to generate more economic growth, the hotel was returned to a restaurant with upstairs apartments.
5. Swinging Bridge

Midland Ave, heading beyond the parking lot towards the Frying Pan River | In 1880, prior to Basalt’s formation, a onelane, post-and-beam wooden structure was built over the Fryingpan River as a wagon bridge for horse and stage traffic passing from Aspen to Glenwood Springs. Regular wash-outs of the bridge resulted in frequent reconstruction. The town replaced it in 2001 with the existing, state-of-the-art Swinging Bridge. Still used by residents to access the school and downtown, the Swinging Bridge has become a cherished part of Basalt.
6. The Aostans
Located off of Cottonwood Drive (between Basalt Elementary and Basalt Middle Schools) | While mining and railroads provided stimulus to the Basalt economy, early ranchers and farmers were the backbone of our culture and carried the valley’s economy from the early 1900s until the ski days. Notably, the small Italian valley of Aosta, a region of northwest Italy in the Western Alps, provided a number of families that framed our future. Seeing similarities to their homeland, they recognized its potential for an agricultural lifestyle rather than the unfamiliar miners’ lives they lived in Aspen. They began to find opportunities to purchase and settle farm and ranch lands.
7. The Ranchers
Arbaney Park close to the Arbaney Barn | While mining and railroads provided stimulus to Basalt’s economy, the ranchers and farmers of the valley have provided the consistent backbone of our culture and economy. Arriving in the valley in 1880, settlers found rich soil and good grass. By 1881, 20 families had acquired land, intending to settle and create their lives as farmers and ranchers. More arrived through the 1880s, and soon they were running cattle and producing crops for their own use and for the miners who began to flood the valley in their quest for minerals. Cattle production and grazing in the high country is still an important, and honored, part of Basalt’s culture.
8. The Charcoal Kilns
Off of Elk Run Drive | In 1880, 900 Aspenites were employed in the silver mines. The mining produced raw ore which required initial smelting before being shipped for refinement. Demand from the Aspen smelters for refining charcoal, which burns hotter than wood, resulted in the construction of seven kilns in Basalt by the Aspen Silver Co. in 1884. The availability of fuel from the vast stands of pine and pinion trees was the main reason for the selection of this site. The kilns were constructed of unfired brick and native stone. They appear to have been constructed with an outside coating of standard mortar for protection from the elements.
9. The Luchsinger Halfway House
Take the path from the Kilns down to Riverside Dr. Located across from 145 Riverside Drive. NOTE: This is private property – please be respectful. | In the early 1880s, the Luchsingers built a halfway house to house passengers on the stage line that
traveled from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. The house was the first home constructed in the central valley and what is now Basalt. The Luchsingers probably housed some of the men who worked on the charcoal kilns.
10. The Working Bridges Riverside Drive, on the bridge over the Frying Pan River | In the 1800s, bridges were a crucial lifeline for commerce and travel, and the untamed rivers often washed them away in the spring. In 1937, the Colorado Highway Department acquired the original railroad bridge where it crossed the Fryingpan just above its junction with the Roaring Fork and converted it to a highway automobile bridge. Highway 82 became the main route for traffic up and down the valley.
11. The Splendid Spud 227 Midland Ave | By 1922, more potatoes were grown in the valley than any other crop. While cattle were a more profitable source of income, almost all locals allocated a part of their lands for potatoes. Well-drained and with adequate water for irrigation, the potato thrived and carried many a family through the Great Depression. At its peak, the Roaring Fork Valley shipped over 3.5 million pounds of potatoes to other markets each year. Although a simple crop, the potato required extensive labor and long working hours during the growing and harvesting seasons.
12. The Snell Building 104 Midland Ave (CC Cafe) | Constructed as a residence, circa 1890, Frank Snell’s home was destroyed in the fire of 1897 that devastated the western end of Basalt. Frank, an engineer for the Colorado Midland Railroad, rebuilt his new home with brick. Map and tour credit: basaltchamber. org/discover/history/walking-tour/

Banned Together Movie Screening
Banned Together pulls back the curtain on two of the most controversial issues in America today: book bans and curriculum censorship in public schools. This documentary follows three young women during their senior year of high school as they fight community members and school board officials to reinstate banned books. We witness their evolution from local to national activists as they advocate at school board meetings, sit down with national politicians, famous authors and constitutional scholars, and ultimately, speak on stage at the Right to Read Rally during the American Library Association’s annual conference in Chicago. Join us for this private, pre-release screening of the film as well as a Q&A with the film directors. Popcorn will be provided. All are welcome!

A Selection of Books on Local History
The Colorado Midland Railroad left behind a legacy of historic sites, old tunnels, towns, settlements, depots, and generations of families forever affected by the long lost railroad.
Once the site of a Ute Indian settlement, Basalt began life as several sleepy little hamlets. In the early 20th century, Basalt became the heart of the valley's mining, ranching, and farming operations.
Colorado has historical high points as grand as its magnificent mountains. From a prehistoric bison hunt to a mad scramble for a fortune in gold, this book is a window into the Centennial State's colorful past.
Ralph was 8 in 1906 when his family moved to a Colorado ranch. Through his eyes, experience the pleasures and perils of ranching including auctions, roundups, irrigation wars, and more.
An engaging narrative, this book begins with the prehistoric cliff dwellers of Mesa Verde and proceeds chronologically with accounts of Colorado’s role as a frontier territory.
The tale of two sisters, Martha and Mary Downer, who grew up in the Roaring Fork Valley in the early 1900's. From their school years to growing their families and beyond, learn all about their life in the valley.

Music at the Library: Cello and Piano Duo
We are proud to welcome Aspen-based pianist Mandy Gessler back to our "Music at the Library" concert series, this time with collaborator Francisco Villa on cello. The duo will perform music by J.S. Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Czech composer Leoš Janáček. As always, concerts are free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served before the concert. Welcome storytellers, writers, journalers, listeners… come one, come all. Have a story? Written okay. Verbal okay. Listening okay. Bring your ideas, blank pages, drafts, friends, kids… This series celebrates connection. How and what you contribute is up to you. Write on! This program is geared toward adults but all ages are welcome as guests. Bring a journal, as well as water and a snack if you wish to. This workshop is being led by Jessica Amber Barnum.

History of Basalt
Basalt was originally part of the Ute Indian Reservation and Hunting Grounds. This vast land area was created in 1868 by an act of Congress and signed by President Grant and extended as far up the valley as Aspen and as far down the valley as Glenwood Springs and up north to Meeker.
Basalt is the result of a merging of two communities: Frying Pan Junction and Aspen Junction. Frying Pan Junction was established in 1882 and then the tent town of Aspen Junction came along around 1885.
The name Frying Pan has several stories of how it got its name. One of the stories is that the trout were so plentiful that they pretty much jumped from the river right into your frying pan. Another story says that some prospectors had hung a frying pan up in a tree where they made their camp. This was after they had moved camp twice to get away from the Ute Indians as these Utes kept camping where the prospectors were panning. They had moved once again to get away from the Indians by going over a mountain side only to find another Indian camp on the other side. At this sight one of the prospectors exclaimed “We have gone out of the Frying Pan and into the fire”. Frying Pan Junction was mainly a tent village, although a few cabins were built. There was a tent store and several tent saloons. Though squatters came as early as 1882, the first settlement town, Frying Pan, was built primarily to house and entertain the men working in the nearby charcoal ovens.
When people heard that a railroad was coming to Frying Pan Junction they quickly moved to the other side of the river to become part of what would be known as Aspen Junction. The Colorado Midland Railroad came to Basalt in 1887. Aspen Junction was a railroad camp with a boarding house, a store, a restaurant, and fifteen saloons. According to a letter written by Emma Davis Slehi, of Emma, the saloons dwindled down to three because there were not enough customers. The arrival of the railroad into Aspen Junction also helped make the charcoal easier to transport. Prior to the railroad the charcoal was loaded onto the backs of mules and horses to be hauled up to Aspen. The post office at Aspen Junction was established February 13, 1890, but the name did not change to Basalt until June 19, 1895. This was done to avoid confusion with the mail in Grand Junction.
Frying Pan Junction and Aspen Junction merged and the Town of Basalt was officially incorporated on October 8, 1901. The name was taken from the basaltic rock formation of Black Mountain (now known as Basalt Mountain) located to the north of the town.

No prior birding experience is needed—just bring your enthusiasm and a sense of adventure. This program is for middle schoolers only. Teen Fly Tying Club
In partnership with the Roaring Fork Conservancy, we present the third year of Teen Fly Tying Club. Teens in Grades 5-12 are invited to learn how to tie their own flies and learn about the aquatic life in our rivers and streams from experts in our community. We will meet at the library every Wednesday from 3-4:30PM from January 8 through March 19. No fly-tying experience is necessary. You don't need to be an angler or know how to fly fish to attend this event. En colaboración con Roaring Fork Conservancy, presentamos el Club de Fly-Tying para adolescentes por tercer año consecutivo. L@s alumn@s cursando del 5° al 12° grado están invitad@s a aprender a atar sus propias moscas (cebos de pesca) y a aprender sobre la vida acuática en nuestros ríos y arroyos, instruid@s por expert@s en nuestra comunidad. Join our 7-part SAT Prep Series designed to help students excel on the digital SAT. This series is tailored for Spanish-speaking, firstgeneration, and/or low-income students. Teen Library Council
Make your voice heard by joining Teen Library Council! As a part of TLC, 6th-12th grade students can influence the games, books, movies, and programs they want to see offered at the Basalt Regional Library. Members of TLC will influence the Young Adult Services at the library, can earn volunteer/community service hours, gain leadership experience, enjoy snacks at each meeting, and receive early access to new library materials and offerings. ¡Eleva tu voz formando parte del consejo de adolescentes! Life as a Miner with Aspen Historical Society
Get ready for an unforgettable celebration of local history and heritage! Ever wondered what it was like to be a miner in the early days? Or why non-native people flocked to Aspen in the 1880s? This exciting program takes you on a journey through the experience of early immigrants during the mining boom. You’ll get a hands-on look at historic photos, artifacts, and interactive props that help bring the past to life, painting a vivid picture of life in a mining ‘camp’ that grew into an industrial city. Led by Amy Honey from the Aspen Historical Society, this program is a fun and immersive experience for elementary and middle school students!

Banned Book Club is a safe and inclusive space for readers to explore literature that has challenged norms, defied censorship, and sparked important conversations throughout history. We are excited to invite families to our early literacy story times. Designed for all ages, we will enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes in the Community Room. Sitting still is not a requirement for storytime. Young children can reap the benefits of storytelling and songs even while wandering. Give it a try. We would love to see you! Paws to Read
This program is for children in grades 1st - 4th who want to practice their reading skills by reading one of their favorite books to a dog! Each child will have 15 minutes of time to read with their canine friend. Registration is required and each child will have an email reminder the day before.
