Desk report:

Britain plots retaliatory tariffs against Trump

The UK will consult British businesses on how the Government could impose retaliatory trade tariffs on the US, Jonathan Reynolds has announced.

The Business and Trade Secretary said businesses will be asked over the next four weeks about which US products “could potentially be included in any UK tariff response”.

The Government has drawn up a list of items that could be subject to tariffs, ranging from jeans to jet fuel. The document runs to more than 400 pages and includes over 8,000 potential categories of goods.

However, Mr Reynolds stressed the Government’s preference would be to strike an economic deal with the US to mitigate the impact of Donald Trump’s 10pc tariff on UK goods.

Sir Keir Starmer said at a local elections event that

Britain was entering a “new era” on trade but added that he does not “think we should jump into a trade war”.

He said: “Nobody wants a trade war, I need to act in the national interest and the choice before us is whether to jump into retaliatory

action with both feet at the get-go, or continue with our calm approach to negotiate a trade deal to mitigate the tariffs if we can. I think the second one is the right approach.”

The decision to announce the consultation and the accompanying timetable will

be seen as an attempt to fast track talks with the White House.

It comes hours after European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was prepared to retaliate against Mr Trump’s levies, which she described as a “major blow”

No drinks with sweeteners for younger children,

Desk report:

Younger children should not be given any drinks containing artificial sweeteners, UK experts are now advising, external.

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) recommendations apply to beverages such as sugar-free 'toothkind' squash that has ingredients such as aspartame, stevia, saccharin and sucralose. It says preschool children should become accustomed to drinking water instead. Sweeteners may help older children cut down on sugar though. What are artificial sweeteners?

Eating too much sugar increases the risk of tooth decay and some long-term health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Artificial sweeteners were developed as a substitute, providing a sweet taste with few or no calories.

All of the ones used in the

to the world economy.

Mr Reynolds said the consultation will be paused if a deal can be done and the Government will today publish a draft list of US products which could be targeted.

He told the House of Commons: “It remains our belief that the best route to economic stability for working people is a negotiated deal with the US that builds on our shared strengths.

“However, we do reserve the right to take any action we deem necessary if a deal is not secured.

“To enable the UK to have every option open to us in future, I am today launching a request for input on the implications for British businesses of possible retaliatory action.

say UK advisers

UK are approved and have undergone rigorous safety tests.

But some are concerned that they enhance preferences for sweet tastes in children which can be hard to overcome. After reviewing the available evidence, SACN says proof that sweeteners are cutting tooth

decay is "poor", although a reduction in free sugars, alongside "other positive changes to diet", is likely to be beneficial to health overall.

It says there may be some value in using sweeteners to help reduce weight gain in the short to medium term, but "it is not essential and is

not the only option."

And the SACN committee experts are concerned about "the gap in data" on UK population exposure to sweeteners. They say there is currently "insufficient evidence" to carry out a full risk assessment and are asking goverment to gather more.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said government was committed to turning the tide on obesity, taking bold action to crack down on child-targeted junk food advertising on TV and online.

Prof Robin May, Chief Scientific Adviser at the Food Standards Agency, said: "We strongly support SACN's call for industry to make data on the quantity of these sweeteners in their ingredients publicly available to provide better information on how much people are consuming and to help inform our assessments of these ingredients."

Prof Graham Finlayson, Chair in Psychobiology, University of Leeds, said it was reasonable to be cautious, especially in children, but the evidence wasn't strong enough to dismiss non-sugar sweeteners as a tool for reducing sugar intake.

GP Ebad Chowdhury explains the range of NHS services available when you have a medical concern, so you can feel at your best and enjoy life to the full.

Spring has arrived and we all want to get out there doing the things we love with the people we love. When life gets busy, we might feel we have less time to look after ourselves, but it’s easier than you think to make sure you keep on top of your health.

I often hear from my patients that ‘life gets in the way’ of making themselves and their health a priority – in fact, a recent NHS survey found that 6 in 10 (60%) South Asians said their busy lifestyle makes it challenging to manage their health and stay healthy. More than a third (36%) also said that not having enough time to make an appointment would stop them from seeking urgent medical help or advice for a health concern. So how can we manage this better and make sure we’re not just putting things off?

The NHS’s latest campaign helps explain its various services and what each offers. There’s also a new film that shows how and when you can use NHS111, your local pharmacy, and the NHS App.

While I’m always happy to see my patients if they’re worried about something, I also want to make sure they’re spending their precious time wisely and

Take charge of your health and your time with NHS services

using the service that is best for their particular health need.

For example, if you think you need urgent medical help but it’s not a life threatening situation, NHS 111 will assess and direct you to the right place for you – it might be that you get a call back from a GP or a nurse, or they may refer you to an urgent treatment centre.

Lots of my patients are now using NHS 111 because it’s just a call away (you can also go online or use the NHS App) and you can access it 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Last year, Anurag had a stomach ache that started one morning and was still there by the evening. It wasn’t getting better, and he began to worry

that he wouldn’t be able to get any advice until the next day.

“Luckily, I was speaking to a friend who mentioned that NHS 111 is available 24/7. I called 111 from my mobile and was taken through a set of questions to find out more about what the problem could be. They helped reassure me about what to do and by the morning I felt

much better. Most importantly, I hadn’t had to worry about it all night before getting advice.”

Of course, we all want to know that when we’re using an NHS service, we’re getting reliable advice that will help with whatever medical concern we have. Your local pharmacy is more than a place to pick up prescriptions and can be a really valuable source of help. Community pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals, who can provide treatment or some prescription medicine for seven common conditions, without you seeing a GP – for earache (for those aged 1 to 17 years); impetigo; infected insect bites; shingles; sinusitis; a sore throat; and urinary tract infection for women aged 16 to 64. They can also provide oral contraceptives.

The thing to remember is that if you have a medical concern, the NHS is here for you. With different services to suit what you need; you can stay in control of your health without wasting time.

For more information on the services your community pharmacist can offer, visit www. nhs.uk/thinkpharmacyfirst

To access NHS 111 you can call, go online or use the NHS App. Find out more at www. nhs.uk/111

Met to cut 1,700 staff to plug £260m 'black hole'

The Metropolitan Police will have to lose 1,700 officers, PCSOs and staff and cut a number of services as it faces a £260m hole in its budget for the coming year, the force has said.

The Royal Parks police team will go, as will officers placed in schools.

At the end of last year, the Met Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, warned of "eyewatering" cuts which could have seen the loss of 2,300 officers.

At the time the Met was facing a £450m budget gap.

That scenario has been avoided, with the Met getting more money from central government and from the mayor. It said it was "grateful" for the extra cash, but it was not enough to avoid "substantial tough choices".

The force plans to make the

savings by recruiting fewer people and not replacing those who decide to leave,

rather than making people redundant. The Met said, despite the cuts, it would

protect frontline services such as neighbourhood policing, tackling violence against

women and girls, and efforts to reform the force.

It detailed a long list of other savings as it tried to protect the number of officers in those frontline and neighbourhood teams:

Scrapping the Royal Parks Police

Getting rid of officers in schools

A 10% cut to forensics

An 11% cut to historic crime teams

A 25% cut to mounted police

A 7% cut to dog teams

Restricting front counter opening hours

Possibly taking firearms off the Flying Squad

While most cuts are likely to go ahead, the Met said it had been allocated an extra £32m that could see some of them scaled back.

Prince Harry attacks ‘blatant lies’ in charity race row

Desk report:

The Duke of Sussex has hit out at “blatant lies” about Sentebale, his African charity, which is at the centre of a race row.

Prince Harry said he hoped the Charity Commission would uncover “the truth” about a bitter boardroom battle after it opened a case into the concerns that have been raised.

The watchdog said it was now in direct contact with those involved, “to gather evidence” and assess whether the charity and its trustees past and present had fulfilled their legal duties. The Duke and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, his cofounder, quit last month, alongside the trustees, after “unthinkable” infighting within the organisation. There have been claims and counterclaims of racism, bullying and mismanagement.

The Duke said in a statement: “From the inception of Sentebale nearly 20 years ago, Prince Seeiso and I have had a clear goal: to support the children and young people in Southern Africa in memory of our mothers. “What has transpired over the last week has been heartbreaking to witness, especially when such blatant lies hurt those who have invested decades in this shared goal. No

one suffers more than the beneficiaries of Sentebale itself.“On behalf of the former trustees and patrons, we share in the relief that the Charity Commission confirmed they will be conducting a robust inquiry. We fully expect it will unveil the truth that collectively forced us to resign. “We remain hopeful this will allow for the charity to be put in the right hands immediately, for the sake of the communities we serve.”

The Charity Commission confirmed on Thursday it had opened a regulatory compliance case after ten days of mudslinging over

the way Sentebale has been governed.Sophie Chandauka, the chairman who first raised concerns with the watchdog in February, said she welcomed its decision to look into the management issues. She revealed that Sentebale had launched an internal governance review last year and would share its findings with the commission. Ms Chandauka said: “We hope that, together, these actions will give the general public, our colleagues, partners, supporters, donors and the communities we serve comfort that Sentebale and its new board of trustees

are acting appropriately to demonstrate and ensure good governance and a healthy culture for Sentebale to thrive.” The Charity Commission said: “The regulator’s focus, in line with its statutory remit, will be to determine whether the charity’s current and former trustees, including its chair, have fulfilled their duties and responsibilities under charity law.“The Commission is not an adjudicator or mediator and is guided by the principle of ensuring trustees fulfil their primary duty to their charitable purpose and beneficiaries.

“After a period of assessing

the initial concerns raised with the Commission, the regulator informed the charity on April 2 2025 it had opened a regulatory compliance case. The regulator has not made any findings at this time.”

A regulatory compliance case focuses on the conduct of trustees and their leadership. In cases of abuse, or where there are suspicions or evidence of mismanagement or misconduct, the Charity Commission will open a statutory inquiry. Through that formal investigation it then has the power to obtain information and to protect the charity, its beneficiaries, assets or reputation, which includes appointing or removing trustees.

‘An untenable situation’ Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso said last month that the relationship between the trustees and Ms Chandauka had broken down “beyond repair, creating an untenable situation”.

They said they would be sharing their concerns with the Charity Commission “as to how this came about”. When Ms Chandauka first raised a complaint with the watchdog, she accused the board of “bullying, harassment, misogyny, misogynoir” – prejudice directed at black women.

Birmingham strike leaves three million wheelie bins of rotting rubbish in streets

Birmingham’s rubbish crisis has left almost three million wheelie bins of waste rotting in the streets, according to expert estimates.

The three-week strike over pay disputes has seen refuse pile high, with rats “as big as cats” plaguing neighbourhoods and even getting into residents’ cars.

Bin workers walked out indefinitely on March 11 after having gone on strike intermittently across January and February, with some bin collections cancelled since Christmas. Divert, a waste collection company, estimated that residents used to fortnightly rubbish removals could have missed at least six collections.

With 461,000 households estimated to have one wheelie bin each, Divert suggested that 2.8 million bins have been left uncollected – equivalent to 13.8 million bags of rubbish. John Verity, a waste

collection expert at Divert, said: “The clearance of the rubbish in the long term could become a financial nightmare for the council.

“Calculations show the costs of privately clearing the waste have already reached

extortionate figures, and this will only rise as further collections are missed.”

Birmingham city council estimated a much smaller figure, saying that around 17,000 tonnes of waste

remains uncollected across the city.

A spokesman said: “The daily rate of accumulation of uncollected waste in the city has increased from 483 tonnes per day in the week of March 10 to 655 tonnes

per day in the week of March 17, to almost 900 tonnes per day in the week of March 24.”

However, Divert noted that Birmingham city council’s figures only include three weeks of strike days.

It estimated that 17,000 tonnes of rubbish would still represent 8.5 million uncollected bin bags –or 850,000 cubic yards of waste. On Thursday, residents in Tyseley were seen wheeling bins and bringing bags of rubbish to a mobile household waste centre.

On Monday, the council announced it would deploy 35 extra cleaning crews to tackle the backlog after it declared a major incident over the strikes.

It said this would enable it to “quickly increase the availability of street cleansing and fly-tip removal with an additional 35 vehicles and crews around the city”.

Desk Report:

A woman who was assaulted on the London Underground has claimed she could not get help because a station help point was not working.

Sally Wynter said she was punched by a man on the Victoria Line at Green Park station last Thursday.

Nobody answered her call when she tried to use a help point to speak to the station’s control centre and contact the police, Ms Wynter said.

“I was on my phone standing to the side of the doors,” she said.

“A bunch of people got off, maybe eight or nine people. I didn’t see anyone before I felt someone punch me in the side of the arm and knock me with that same fist into the glass [partition].

“I screamed out once I sort of got myself together, I was like ‘What the f--- did you just do? You f-----g hit me!’”

She said she asked passengers if anyone had seen the man assault her, but that bystanders did that “very British thing” with just one person “mumbling”.

“People waiting to get on definitely saw it happen,” she

‘I was punched on the Tube but TfL failed to help me’

added. “But unfortunately, no one came up to me.

That’s the bystander effect in reality.” She got off the train and pressed the emergency button at Green Park station.

“Basically that help [point] was not manned, so the intercom never connected. I pressed it about four times,” Ms Wynter said, explaining that she eventually gave up and went upstairs to the ticket office where she could get mobile phone signal.

“I was there for about half an hour while I was on the phone to the police. There were basically multiple failings,” she continued.

“It puts people’s lives in danger because it’s funnelling towards something that isn’t very helpful and might not even be the right thing, to be honest.”

Now the startup entrepreneur has called for Sir Sadiq

Khan, who oversees Transport for London (TfL) in his role as Mayor of London, to investigate why the help point failed to work – and to audit the thousands of help points dotted around the capital’s rail network.

She added that she had “not heard from Sadiq Khan yet”, despite making public calls on LinkedIn and TikTok for the Mayor to contact her.

Decisions taken within the next few days will determine whether British Steel's Scunthorpe plant stays open, the BBC understands.

The plant's Chinese owner, Jingye, has cancelled two cargo shipments of coking coal for the site's two blast furnaces and it has not yet paid for iron pellets that are scheduled to arrive next week. Without coal and iron ore, the blast furnaces will shut down within weeks.

Last week British Steel launched a consultation on the proposed closure of its two blast furnaces at Scunthorpe, putting up to 2,700 jobs at risk.

It has been meeting with the trade unions Community,

British Steel could decide to shut Scunthorpe plant in days

GMB and Unite.

The GMB's national officer, Charlotte Brumpton-Childs, said that a union meeting with workers on Wednesday had shown that ''Jingye has no intention of running the plant responsibly. Nationalisation is now the only option to save UK steelmaking."

Sources close to the consultation accuse Jingye of deliberately undermining talks to save the plant by closing down the supply of raw materials.

British Steel said: "We are not able to comment at this time".

The assistant general secretary of the union Community, Alasdair McDiarmid, said: "The

situation is extremely concerning, and it would be an abject disaster if the business was allowed to close by default due to a lack of raw materials.

"We are now approaching a critical crossroads. If a deal can't be reached with the company, the government must move swiftly to avert a disastrous cliff edge by nationalising the business."

British Steel has been owned by Jingye since 2020.

The Chinese firm says it has invested more than £1.2bn into British Steel to maintain operations and claims it has suffered financial losses of about £700,000 a day.

Zengwei An, the company's chief executive, said the launch of the consultation process had been "a

necessary decision given the hugely challenging circumstances the business faces", including the imposition of US tariffs and higher environmental costs.

The BBC reported last week that the company had drawn up a £2bn investment plan and that it had expected the government to contribute half.

The BBC understands that British Steel recently rejected a government offer of £500m.

There are growing calls for the government to nationalise the company.

On Tuesday, North Lincolnshire Council voted unanimously in favour of the company being brought back into public ownership, while last week in Parliament,

Last year, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) opened an investigation into the 4,500 help points on the mainline rail network across the country.

The regulator said in November that “not all station operators have systems and processes in place to reliably operate their help points, or reliably answer calls from them”, adding that a quarter of help points were not working when inspected. TfL said in a 2020 freedom of information (FOI) response that its platform help points typically called a phone in the station office. If the call is not answered within “30 seconds or so” it is diverted to the London Underground Control Centre (LUCC).

“When an emergency call is diverted to the LUCC, it is presented in our priority queue as an emergency call and they are answered within a few seconds. Typically, this would be within two to three rings,” said the FOI response, which was published on TfL’s website.

TfL commissioner apologises However, she said that Andy Lord, the TfL commissioner, has emailed her to apologise for the handling of the incident.

Conservative MPs and the deputy leader of Reform UK, Richard Tice, also called for nationalisation.

Questioned on the BBC's Today programme on Thursday, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said he was ''strongly committed to the UK having a steel industry'' and that he was making sure ''we are closely engaged on this issue''.

However, he declined to comment on reports that public ownership was being actively considered by ministers, saying: "We are talking to the company. It's in private ownership, that is the situation that we have inherited, we are trying to find a way through that."

Trum trad Madness

Desk report:A stock market rout on Thursday plunged one major index into bear territory after President Donald Trump's tariffs sparked fears of a US and global recession.

Wall Street was awash in red after Trump unveiled steeper-than-expected tariffs on Wednesday. For every stock that gained value, ten were losing ground. For most stocks, it was the biggest down day since Covid.

It got worse as the day wore on. By 2pm in New York, the S&P 500 was down 4.15 percent, the Nasdaq down 5.3 percent and the Dow Jones 3.27 percent.

The small-cap Russell 2000 index — a key benchmark for smaller, US-focused businesses — plunged 5 percent to hit a 52-week low.

That drop extended its decline from its November 25 record high to 21 percent, officially pushing it into bear market territory.

On Wall Street, a 10 percent drop signals a correction, while 20 percent marks a bear market. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq remain in correction territory, with the Dow Jones hovering just below that threshold.

Individual stocks took an even bigger battering. Five Below and Wayfair were down 29 percent. Ralph Lauren, Dockers and Dell down 17 percent. Nike was down 12 per cent. Apple down 8 per cent.

Trillions of dollars was wiped off the value of US stocks — a blow that will also hit ordinary Americans whose retirement savings, including 401(K) are tied to the market. Retail experts say tariffs will also push up prices for shoppers since they are so big companies will have to pass on higher costs.

Companies that rely on imports were down the most, since they will now be hit by tarifs as high as 54 percent for cheap goods from Asia.

Wall Street had hoped the sharp sell-off would encourage the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. But Fed member Philip Jefferson, speaking Thursday afternoon, said there were no plans to change track on the twoo planned cuts for 2025.

'The silver lining for

After the last page

investors could be that this is only a starting point for negotiations with other countries and ultimately tariff rates will come down across the board,' Northlight Asset Management's Chris Zaccarelli wrote in a note to clients. 'But for now traders are shooting first and asking questions later,' he added.

On Thursday morning, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick dismissed the possibility of exemptions for certain countries under the new US tariffs.

'I don't think the word exemption is going to be a factor. I don't think that's such a thing,' Lutnick said on CNBC's Squawk Box.

Lutnick also warned that other nations would be making a mistake if they retaliated with their own tariffs against the U.S.

Trump made his tariff announcement Wednesday afternoon in the White House Rose Garden, unveiling broad 10 percent tariffs — with even higher rates for certain countries. This includes 34 percent on China, on top of an existing 20 percent tariff. For the European Union, it is 20 percent, much higher than expected. Tariffs will be25 percent on South Korea, 24 percent on Japan and 32 percent on Taiwan.

By then, Wall Street had closed, but futures tied to major US indexes immediately nosedived as investors worried about rising inflation and economic fallout.

Overnight, global stocks tumbled as recession fears spread. Japan's Nikkei index sank tumbled more than 3 percent, while South Korea's Kospi slipped 1.5 percent. In Australia's main index

dipped 1.9 percent, heading for its worst single-day decline since September.

Trump on Wednesday accused foreign nations of 'ripping off' the United States. He announced a baseline 10 percent tariff on all imports, effective April 5, with higher rates for countries imposing steeper duties on US goods.

Trump confirmed that a 25 percent tariff would be imposed on all foreign cars imported to the US starts Thursday. The president used aggressive rhetoric to describe a global trade system that the United States helped to build after World War II, saying 'our country has been looted, pillaged, raped, plundered' by other nations.

He has promised that factory jobs will return back to the United States as a result of the taxes, but his policies risk a sudden economic slowdown as consumers and businesses could face sharp price hikes on autos, clothes and other goods.

'Taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years,' Trump said in remarks at the White House. 'But it is not going to happen anymore.'

He condemned 'foreign scavengers.' And he talked of other nations that had 'pillaged, raped and plundered' the U.S. and 'foreign cheaters' who 'ransacked' American factories.

It took nearly 20 minutes before Trump shared the tariff details. 'For nations that treat us badly we will calculate the combined rate of all their tariffs, non-monetary barriers and other forms of cheating. And because we are being very kind ... We will

zero waste and zero wealth concentration," he told the forum this afternoon.

Prof Yunus said the world is approaching to a selfdestructive civilisation as carbon emission, waste generation and wealth concentration continue applying the old economic models.

Stressing the need for protection of nature, the chief adviser said: "Unless your wealth is shared, you cannot sustain in the society." Mentioning that human being is not born to work under anybody else but they were born to be entrepreneurs, he asked the young generation to keep entrepreneurship in mind.

charge them approximately half of what they charge us,' Trump said.

Trump then held up a large sign that showed the calculations. As Trump went through the chart, he knocked even some of the U.S.'s closest allies for charging import taxes.

'The European Union. They're very tough, very, very tough traders. You think of European Union, very friendly. They rip us off. It's so said to see. It's pathetic,' Trump said. 'Thirty-nine percent, we're going to charge them 20 percent, so we're charging them essentially half.' The largest tariff will hit the African nation of Lesotho, at a rate of 50 percent.

Canada and Mexico were exempt from Wednesday's tariff announcement, due to the president already charging them 25 percent excluding the goods outlined in the trade agreement from Trump's first administration.

'They all understand, we're gonna have to go through a little tough love maybe? But they all understand. They're ripping us off and they understood,' Trump said.

Dr Yunus urges youths to build themselves as threezero persons

Desk report:

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today called on the youths to build themselves as "threezero persons" to protect the planet from destruction as he delivered keynote speech at BIMSTEC Young Gen Forum on the sidelines of BIMSTEC Summit here. "If we want to provide service, we will have to go to a new civilisation of three zeros - zero carbon emission,

Calling the present young generation as the most powerful generation ever in the world, the 2006 Noble Peace Laureate said life is about preservation and protection and that is why the new civilisation of three zeros should be created. About the importance of three-zero clubs, he said once five persons get together, they can create a three-zero club where they will not personally contribute to carbon emission, waste generation and wealth concentration, and they will be three-zero persons.

"You cannot change the world in a day...if you want to change, start from your village," the chief adviser told youths.

In his speech, Prof Yunus recalled the journey of Grameen Bank, which has already brought thousands of rural poor women out of poverty.

He mentioned that when a famine hit Bangladesh in 1974 after its independence, he was thinking that how he could do something for the country.

As a result, the chief adviser said he thought to do something for a small village next to Chittagong University while he was a teacher of that university. Highlighting the challenges that he faced during the initial stage of Grameen Bank, he said there was suspicion over it but "luckily I could speak local dialect so there was no language difference".

He said for the first time, he disbursed money equivalent to one dollar to a woman and that was the beginning of journey, and later a village bank (Grameen Bank) was established.

Terming the rights to credit as human rights, the Grameen Bank founder observed that if the rights to credit are ensured, other rights could be established.
