Scientists discover new part of the immune system

Desk report:

A new part of the immune system has been discovered and it is a goldmine of potential antibiotics, scientists have said.

They've shown a part of the body known to recycle proteins has a secret mode that can spew out an arsenal of bacteriakilling chemicals.

The researchers in Israel say it transforms our understanding of how we are protected against infection.

And gives a new place to look for antibiotics to tackle the growing problem of superbugs that resist our current drugs.

The discovery centres on the proteasome – a tiny structure that is found in every cell of the body.

Its main role is to chop up old proteins into smaller chunks so they can be recycled to make new ones.

But a series of experiments, detailed in the journal Nature, external, shows the proteasome detects when a cell has been infected by bacteria.

It then changes structure and role. It starts transforming old proteins into weapons that can rip open the outer layer of bacteria to kill them. Prof Yifat Merbl, from the Weizmann Institute of Science, told me: "This is really exciting, because we never knew that this was happening.

"We discovered a novel mechanism of immunity that is allowing us to have a defence against bacterial infection.

"It's happening throughout our body in all the cells, and generates a whole new class of potential natural antibiotics."

The research team went through a process they called "dumpster diving" to find these natural antibiotics.

They were tested on bacteria growing in the laboratory and on mice with pneumonia and sepsis. The researchers

said they were getting results comparable to some established antibiotics.

And when the researchers took cells in the laboratory and disabled the proteasome they were far easier to infect with bacteria like Salmonella. Prof Daniel Davis, the head of life sciences and an immunologist at Imperial College London, said the findings were "extremely provocative and very interesting" as they changed our understanding of how our body fights infection.

"What's really exciting about this, is it's a totally undiscovered process by which anti-germ molecules are made inside our cells, it feels profoundly important and surprising."

But he cautioned that turning this into a new source of antibiotics is an idea that "still needs to be tested" and that will take time.

More than a million people a year are estimated to die from infections that are resistant to drugs like antibiotics.

More women doctors than men for first time in UK

Desk report:

There are more female doctors than male doctors in the UK for the first time, figures show.

The General Medical Council (GMC) said the number of women on its register had overtaken men for the first time, although numbers vary across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Some 164,440 women are registered with a licence to practise, making up 50.04% of the register, compared with 164,195 men, the medical regulator said. One of the driving factors has been the rising number of women joining UK medical schools, it added. Since 2018/19, there have been more female than male medical students in each of the four nations, the regulator said. Its figures show there were hardly any female doctors more than 150 years ago when the register first opened in 1859. This remained the case for decades but started rising from the turn of the century, with a rapid increase from the 1970s. Currently more women than

men work as doctors in Scotland and Northern Ireland, with fewer female doctors in England and Wales, the GMC said. The medical specialties with the most women doctors are obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics. Surgery, ophthalmology and emergency

medicine have the least women. The GMC said there are also more female GPs in the UK, with 57.7% of the workforce made up of female doctors.

Professor Dame Carrie MacEwen, chairwoman of the GMC and a consultant ophthalmologist, said the

demographics of the medical workforce are "rapidly changing, and that diversity will benefit patients".

She continued: "But women training for careers in medicine continue to face challenges that must be acknowledged and tackled."And for those

women already working as doctors there is still work to do to create supportive and inclusive workplaces, and to ensure they have access to progression opportunities, including leadership roles, so that they can have long and fulfilling careers in medicine."

Figures from the GMC's training survey about discrimination in the workplace found 9% of female respondents reported unwelcome sexual comments, or advances causing embarrassment, distress or offence, compared with just 4% of men.Dr Latifa Patel, chairwoman of the British Medical Association representative body, called the development a "significant milestone for the profession and for patients".

"Retaining women doctors in the workplace, in the NHS, and happy and fulfilled in their roles, must be a priority," she added.

Professor Scarlett McNally, president of the Medical Women's Federation and a surgeon, said: "This huge change should be celebrated."

Everyday Moments That Shape Your Child’s Future

As a registered counsellor, who specialises in supporting children and young people, I have seen firsthand how the earliest moments of a child’s life can shape their future.

In our community, children are cherished as the heart of the home. Parents make countless decisions every day to support their child’s well-being, from providing nourishing meals to ensuring they receive essential healthcare. But while physical health is crucial, nurturing a child’s developing mind is just as important.

90% of a child’s brain growth happens by the age of five, shaping their ability to think, communicate, and connect with the world around them. It’s in these early years that strong foundations are laid, and as parents, every small interaction—from a gentle smile or cuddle to a bedtime story— can have a lasting impact.

You don’t need to buy lots of toys or have big days out to help your child develop. The best learning happens naturally through daily interactions. Talking, playing, and even involving your child in everyday tasks like cooking or shopping help them build essential life skills and get the right start at school.

Our traditions and customs provide such a rich opportunity for early learning:

Storytelling: Telling folk stories from back home or singing lullabies in our mother tongue can strengthen language skills and cultural pride. Cooking Together: Letting children help make chapatis or measure lentils introduces them to numbers, textures, and hand-eye coordination.

Gatherings: Sitting with elders, listening to family history, and participating in conversations encourage language development and a sense of belonging.

Festivals and Celebrations: Preparing for Eid or Diwali by decorating the home or making sweets helps with fine motor

skills and creativity.

Top Tips for Supporting Your Child’s Development Take It Slow: Encourage your child to explore at their own pace.

Chat Back and Forth: Talk to your baby and respond to their babbling—it builds confidence in communication.

Make Every Moment a Learning Moment: Grocery shopping? Count fruit together. Doing laundry? Name colours of clothes.

Encourage Curiosity: Ask openended questions like, “What do you think will happen next?” Be Creative Together: Play with toys, tell stories, and explore imagination through pretend play.

Start for Life: A Valuable and Practical Guide for Parents

The Start for Life website offers easy-to-follow advice tailored to busy parents. Whether you’re looking for speech development ideas, interactive play tips, or guidance on building confidence, it’s a great resource to explore.

The early years are about more than just learning milestones— they’re about creating meaningful connections. Through play, conversation, and cultural traditions, every interaction leaves a lasting impact. Visit https://www.nhs. uk/start-for-life/ for inspiration and guidance on making the most of these vital years.

A Parent’s Perspective: Yasmin: Yasmin Bibi, Mother of Three says: “The Start for Life website has been really useful for me. It’s full of easy, practical ideas that fit into my busy day, whether I’m on the school run or sorting out dinner. It’s like having a friendly guide reminding me of the things that we are already doing can make a huge difference for our children.”

How migrant workers are saving the NHS from crisis

Desk report: New figures show hospitals across the West Country are being kept running partly thanks to migrant workers. About 25% of staff at Bristol's Southmead and Swindon's Great Western Hospital are from overseas. This equates to about 1,375 jobs in GWH and 3,250 roles in Southmead, according to NHS data. Health chiefs have said they are "extremely grateful" to oversea workers who fill vacancy gaps across the NHS. Ophthalmologist Dr Amey Tamhane is one of thousands of migrant staff who have joined Somerset NHS Foundation Trust in recent years, and has since cared for more than 21,000 patients. He moved his family to Yeovil in 2019 after being recruited in India. He said the experience had been "smooth". Dr Tamhane, a father-of-two, said: "The hospital in general has

helped me a lot in terms of my clinical workload as well as the management part regarding the visas and immigration so it was really beneficial for me to progress in my career."New data

shows 23% staff are from overseas at Royal United Hospital in Bath and at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Meanwhile at Gloucestershire Hospitals, the figure is 17%. It is worth

noting the figures are selfreported by staff but do give a good indication of nationalities. Em WilkinsonBrice, director for staff experience and leadership development for NHS

England, said they wanted to get the "balance" right and that work was ongoing to train people domestically. "We are an incredibly diverse country and that's reflective in our workforce too and I am so very glad we have so many internationally educated staff working in our NHS," she said. "There is an ambition to make sure we have got the balance right so that we are domestically recruiting and training."

Ms Wilkinson-Brice added that she wanted to make sure the door was always open to people from abroad. "There will be a refresh of the long-term workforce plan ... Of course we want to make sure we have got good training routes for people from the UK but we would always want to make sure we are welcoming of people from overseas," she said.

With Love, Meghan review — smug syrupy and endlessly spoofable

Desk report: If you thought With Love, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex’s new lifestyle show, would be a smug, syrupy endurance watch, and that you would rather fry your eyeballs than sit through it, I have news for you. It is so much worse than that.

Here is a duchess presenting her extreme wealth and mind-bogglingly exclusive lifestyle as if it is available to anyone who cares enough to pop a twee personal label on a homemade beeswax candle or lay a sprig of fresh lavender on a towel.

That lavender will of course be harvested in a rustic wicker basket along with fruits and herbs from the vast garden of your Montecito mansion. “Love is in the detail!” Meghan squawks, explaining how she likes to feel like a “present parent” by, for instance, arranging her children’s fruit in a perfect rainbow each morning, advice that I sincerely hope every single knackered parent catching the bus to work at 6am in the rain will heed.

In one episode, after she has put about 50 quid’s worth of berries on a plate and decked out a summer house like there’s been an explosion in a Cath Kidston warehouse, she tells her guest Mindy Kaling that it’s possible to create this kind of magic “on a budget”. Here, I’m afraid, I laughed

out loud. Tone-deaf klaxon required! That a millionaire paid a reported $100 million by Netflix to tit around in a farmhouse kitchen wearing perfect pastel trousers could utter the word “budget” with a straight face and seems to suggest she’s just another “working mom” may make you wish to retch into your (rosemary-scented) sick bag.

Yes, I know that what Netflix is peddling, alongside cooking tips, is lifestyle envy. This is why Meghan, who seems to be auditioning to be the new Martha Stewart, wears a pricey beige cashmere sweater draped over her shoulders while cooking like no one ever does and a beautiful white blouse with lantern sleeves

that nearly droop into her crudité platter. People love to press their noses against rich celebrity windows, though the farmhouse here isn’t hers. She wanted to keep her own home private — and I suspect it is far, far bigger than this.

But it is all the relentless smiling, the desperate upbeatness of this highspec, lavish production, that jars. At least I suspect it will with a more cynical British audience. Americans may feel differently. Meghan must have had face-ache with all that grinning. It is a world where people use superlatives about a cherry tomato and in Californian accents say, “That’s so funny!” but then don’t actually laugh from their

Meghan says we aren’t “in pursuit of perfection … we are in the pursuit of joy” — and yet we all know she told Oprah Winfrey that Kate made her cry over a difference of opinion about flower girl dresses. This is a series that entreats you to fill every moment of life “with wonder” so do please try to remember that when you are next applying haemorrhoid cream or emptying the cat’s litter tray.

In fairness here’s what did surprise me. Meghan is rather talented at all this creative presentation lark. She has the knack, as we saw when she wrapped gifts perfectly, decorated

cakes and demonstrated beautiful handwriting. I like that she let her late dog Guy (to whom the series is dedicated) lick peanut butter off the spoon like a real dog owner would, that she has rescued chickens and that she is clearly not one of those Californians who don’t drink alcohol. It also isn’t a self-pity party like that other Netflix series, Harry & Meghan.

But her skills get lost amid all the syrup and rehearsed hugging. This is performative joy. There is a point when an oblique reference is made to hers and Harry’s sex life and at that exact second she pops a cork on a bottle of champagne while winking to camera. I bet that “spontaneous” moment took many retakes.

Harry barely features in this series, incidentally, popping up briefly to drink a mimosa at a garden party brunch and toast his wife who speaks of “healing” and her “new chapter”. He looks like a spare part.

This series should do very well. There will, I bet, be a second one, even though to some it will not be about “taking the ordinary and elevating it” but taking the ordinary and making it insufferable. Couldn’t they have dialled down the self-congratulation just a notch? They must know how spoofable it all is. I imagine South Park is penning a script right now.

Teacher shortage limiting school subjects on offer

Desk report: Some secondary schools are having to cut back on their curriculum because of problems recruiting staff, Wales' chief inspector of education has said.

Owen Evans said Estyn school inspectors were also starting to see more difficulties retaining staff. Giving evidence to a Senedd committee, Mr Evans said recruitment challenges "weaken the standard of teaching but also the choice available to children".

The Welsh government said it would be providing an extra £20m for schools to support education standards in 2024-25. Inspectors also said improvements were needed to the quality of maths teaching because "standards in mathematics are too low".

Estyn chiefs were answering questions from the Children, Young People and

Education Committee about its annual report in which it said problems recruiting qualified staff were having

an impact on the quality of education and posed a "risk" to the system. Mr Evans said it was also

limiting the subject choices available to children.

"We see secondary schools now that have to limit the curriculum because they can't recruit teachers in those subjects," he said. Retention of school staff is also "going down", he said, despite the Education Workforce Council saying the situation was stable. "I don't expect that stable situation to continue," he added.

The chief inspector said schools were reporting key staff were leaving the profession. Mr Evans added secondary headteachers told inspectors they would "get one applicant if they're lucky" when they advertise for maths teachers "and sometimes that person isn't employable".

bellies. There is no authentic humour.

Desk report:

The Conservatives have called for the government to overrule planned changes which would make the ethnicity or faith of an offender a bigger factor when deciding whether to jail them.

The Sentencing Council, which issued the new guidance, external for England and Wales, is independent and ministers do not currently have the power to override it.

But shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick told the BBC that if necessary, the law should be changed so the government could do so.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has said she will write to the council to "register my displeasure" and recommend reversing the change, after the Tories accused her of overseeing "two-tier justice".

"As someone who is from an ethnic minority background myself, I do not stand for any differential treatment before the law, for anyone of any kind," Mahmood said.

Call for ministers to overrule 'two-tier' sentencing changes

"There will never be a twotier sentencing approach under my watch." Downing Street said the prime minister backed the justice secretary's comments, adding that the "updated guidelines don't represent the views of the government".

The Sentencing Council

said the guidance would ensure courts had the "most comprehensive information available" to hand out an appropriate sentence and could address disadvantages faced within the criminal justice system. Official figures, external show that offenders from ethnic minorities consistently

get longer sentences than white offenders for indictable offences. If the Sentencing Council defies Mahmood, as they are entirely entitled to do, then the justice secretary and the prime minister face an acute dilemma.

Either they rush through legislation to overrule the council, no doubt facing

down outrage from the legal establishment and antidiscrimination campaigners to do so.

Or they allow the guidelines to take effect, facing accusations from the Conservatives that they are not willing to do everything possible to stop something they themselves have described as "two-tier".

That "two-tier" phrase is especially highly-charged.

The government regards that accusation as politically toxic and is desperate to repel any suggestion of twotier justice.

The updated sentencing guidance, which is due to come into force from April, places a greater emphasis on the need for pre-sentence reports for judges.

Pre-sentence reports give judges details on the offender's background, motives and personal life before sentencing - then recommend a punishment and what would work best for rehabilitation.

Work coaches to focus on long-term unemployed

Desk report:

Ministers, facing potential cuts of billions of pounds from the welfare budget, have announced plans to use 1,000 work coaches to help the long-term unemployed into work.

The coaches are already employed by job centres but will be redeployed to focus on tackling economic inactivity, said the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

It said the staff would provide personalised and "intensive" support to thousands of sick and disabled people.

But the Resolution Foundation, a think tank focused on people on low incomes, said only a tiny percentage would actually find a job.

The coaches will offer tailored employment support to people on healthrelated benefits and help them access support with writing CVs and interview techniques, the government said.

Ministers hope moving thousands of people into jobs will help them unlock the benefits of work and cut the rapidly rising cost of health and disability benefits.

But the Resolution Foundation said only about 3% of the hundreds of thousands of people likely to lose benefit payments were likely to find a job.

In a report called Delivering the Undeliverable, the researchers argue the causes of the rising welfare costs include the country getting older and sicker and that while ministers are keen on quick financial cuts, truly effective reforms will take time to deliver. The government described the 1,000 redeployed work coaches as a "downpayment" on plans to overhaul employment support, set to be unveiled

within weeks.

The current system fails to intervene early enough to stop people becoming unemployed and misses opportunities to support their return, the DWP said.

It has become "defined by poor experiences and low trust among many people who use it", it added.

Some 2.8 million people are economically inactive

because of long-term sickness, the department said.

Last year, the government spent £65bn on sickness benefits - a 25% increase on the year before the Covid pandemic. That figure is forecast to increase to around £100bn before the next general election.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has earmarked several billion pounds in draft spending cuts to welfare and other government departments ahead of the Spring Statement.

Work and Pensions

Secretary Liz Kendall said the "broken" welfare system Labour had inherited was "failing sick and disabled people, is bad for the taxpayer, and holding the economy back".

"For too long, sick, and disabled people have been told they can't work, denied support, and locked out of jobs, with all the benefits that good work brings," she said.

Crossbow killer watched Andrew Tate videos before attack

Desk report:A former soldier watched videos of Andrew Tate before murdering his ex-partner alongside her sister and her mother, it can now be reported.

Kyle Clifford was “fuelled by misogyny” as he killed Louise Hunt, 25, her 28-year-old sister Hannah and their mother Carol, 61, in a knife and crossbow attack at their home in Bushey, Hertfordshire, on July 9 last year, a court was told. The 26-year-old admitted their murders but denied raping Louise, his former partner, who had ended their relationship two weeks earlier because of his aggressive and “belittling” behaviour. Clifford, who is paralysed from the chest down after shooting himself with the crossbow after the killings, was found guilty on Thursday of rape following a four-day trial at Cambridge Crown Court.

Jurors took 45 minutes to unanimously find him guilty. He will be sentenced at the same court on Tuesday. There were cheers, applause and sobs in the public gallery as the verdict was read out.

Clifford refused to attend proceedings or give evidence but continued to insist through his lawyers that he was innocent.

John Hunt, the BBC racing correspondent, who is Louise and Hannah’s father, and Carol’s husband, attended every day of the trial and sat through the harrowing evidence in silence. Clifford stabbed Mrs Hunt with a 10in butcher’s knife before hiding her body and waiting for over an hour for Louise to come in from the back garden, where she was working in her dog grooming pod. He then gagged, restrained and raped her before shooting her with the crossbow while she was next to her mother’s body. Hannah returned home seconds after Louise was killed, and Clifford shot her dead before fleeing.

After carrying out the murders, Clifford went on the run.

After the last page

The following day, he was traced to the Lavender Hill Cemetery near his home in Enfield, north London, where he attempted to take his own life by shooting himself in the chest with the crossbow as officers moved in to arrest him. Alison Morgan KC, prosecuting, said on Thursday that Clifford had killed Louise because he would “not allow” her to control the narrative following the break-up.

She said: “If he wanted Louise, he would have her. He would control her. He would rape her. He would murder her and members of her family. If he could not have Louise Hunt, no one else was going to, and he was going to take down her family with her.” The court heard that Clifford had lain in wait in the Hunt family home for an hour after killing Carol.

Ms Morgan continued: “He was lying in wait not because what he had planned for Louise was just an act of murder. He could have done that immediately. He was lying in wait to do something altogether different. “When she came into the house, we know she must have been rapidly restrained and silenced.”

In police interview, Clifford replied no comment and only became emotional when asked about his own suicide note, which officers described as “selfcentred”. Before the trial began, prosecutors wanted to highlight to the jury Clifford’s interest in social media influencer Tate as they argued that it was “revealing to his mindset

and how he viewed women”. However, Justice Joel Bennathan, the trial judge, ruled that it was not directly relevant and would be highly prejudicial as Tate was an alleged rapist and “almost a poster boy for misogynists”.

Bangladesh leader reacts to 'House of Mirrors' prison - and vows to put Sheikh Hasina on trial

Desk report: The interim leader of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, has told Sky News former prime minister Sheikh Hasina will stand trial for crimes against humanity.

Ms Hasina is accused of overseeing a system of enforced disappearances during her time in government, as well as the mass killing of protesters in July and August last year. Speaking to Sky News, Professor Yunus said: "A trial will be taking place. Not only her, but also all the people who are associated with her - her family members, her clients or associates."

Ms Hasina, who was toppled by the protests and is currently in exile in India, is accused of overseeing a network of secret detention centres where it's alleged her political opponents were interrogated, tortured and some killed - all under the banner of a "war on terror".

Bangladesh has issued two arrest warrants for her. Professor Yunus said they had sent "formal letters" but received "no official response" from New Delhi. He insisted, however, that Ms Hasina would face the court, whether physically

how quickly the families of victims will see justice, and whether that will happen under his watch. Elections for a new government in the country could happen as early as December. "Some will get punished, some will still be under the process, some will still be untraceable," he said. Investigations into alleged corruption

The chief adviser has had a large in-tray to deal with since taking over a country in turmoil, including anticorruption probes into those connected to Ms Hasina.

present in Bangladesh or in absentia, in India. Professor Yunus recently visited one of the now infamous secret jails, code-named the 'House of Mirrors'. The economics professor, known as the 'banker to the poor' and now chief adviser of Bangladesh, said he was beyond shocked at what he saw.

"This is just the ugliest thing that you can see, you can feel, or you can observe," he said.

Ms Hasina is accused of using her security forces and police to oversee the abduction, torture and murder of hundreds of activists.

She denies the allegations and says she's being politically persecuted. Ms Hasina, her close aides and many of those accused of overseeing a network of as many as 800 secret jails have fled Bangladesh.

Professor Yunus said the number and range of people involved in the alleged crimes was "taking time" to work through. "Everybody was involved in it all," he said. "The whole government was involved in it. So you cannot distinguish who was really and enthusiastically doing it, who was doing it under orders and who was not quite supportive but carrying out those kinds of things."

Ms Hasina, the military and police are also accused of a violent crackdown on protesters in July and August which the UN estimates killed as many as 1,400 people in the days before the former prime minister fled. Professor Yunus tried to manage expectations around

British Labour MP Tulip Siddiq, who is Ms Hasina's niece, is one of those being investigated by Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Professor Yunus said the case against her was "serious", that she had a large amount of "wealth left behind" in the country and "everything" would be looked at.

Ms Siddiq resigned as anticorruption minister in January after being named in the investigation in Bangladesh. A spokesperson for the London MP said she "totally denies the claims" and had "not been contacted on these matters". Managing refugee crisis The influx of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh is another challenge for Professor Yunus's leadership. There's been a sharp rise in the number of the mainly Muslim minority fleeing Myanmar into Bangladesh after escalating violence in the country's long-running civil war.

Professor Yunus said they were now in talks with rebel groups in Myanmar about the possibility of a "safe zone" to eventually help the Rohingya refugees to return to their homeland. He also acknowledged big problems in Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh, home to the largest refugee camp in the world, where an estimated one million Rohingya refugees have fled to - and where "violence, drugs and paramilitary activities" are rife.

The tension, Professor Yunus said, "will not disappear".
