Most servicing is carried out on the farm but if repairs are needed during harvest, then the Scrutons workshop team responds quickly. “Repair and maintenance costs have been very low, and apart from routine maintenance all we have needed are a few new belts, an engine sensor, a transmission oil cooler, and this year we needed a new knife drive gearbox. The knife drive was similar to the one on our previous Laverda which never caused a problem, so the failure was just bad luck.” Fendt and dealer package Asked whether the combine will be replaced by something similar, Kevin confirmed that this is likely. “A rotary combine wouldn’t offer significant advantages for us, and we like the straw quality from the straw walker model,” he explained. “Our current Fendt has its limitations, but for its cost and size it is excellent. I enjoy driving it - we achieve a great sample, grain losses are low and straw is handled gently and left in great condition for baling.

Farm manager Kevin Robson is the combine’s main operator, and he described the cab as comfortable and dust-free, and said the controls are all within easy reach and the level of automation is excellent.

“Reliability remains good, so we probably won’t update it for another two to three years but when we do then I would expect its replacement to be a similar Fendt model but with ParaLevel added, and supplied again by Scrutons for the excellent back-up.”

“With enhanced separation provided by MCS Plus, we maintain higher speeds even when conditions are very difficult, as grain is effectively removed from the straw. On our farm and with our damp climate we never disengage it, as straw damage remains low and it always gives us an advantage.”
A Fendt 6275L straw walker combine which completed its sixth harvest on an East Yorkshire farm in 2021 remains efficient and reliable, and continues to impress its operator.
