My family have been farming at Denstone Hall Farm since 1845 and I am the 10th generation to do so. We initially started as tenant farmers, however, when the opportunity arose, I was able to purchase the farm in the 1960’s. At that time, the farm only had around 65 acres of land, but during my farming life we have managed to build the farm up to a large dairy farm.

In the early 2000’s we decided that we needed to diversify somewhat. This led to us converting the business to an arable and beef enterprise, as well as opening our very own shop and cafe called Denstone Hall Farm Shop & Café.

What are your thoughts on the Massey Ferguson Brand?

We’ve been farming with the Massey Ferguson brand for the last 60 years. My father brought the first hydraulic tractor, the T20, back in the mid-1950s, which is one of the reasons we have stayed loyal to the brand for so long.

One thing that is very important to me is how my operators handle the machinery. The Massey brand is very good at giving the operators the right information and assistance when needed.

PUTTING HUSQVARNA AUTOMOWER® TO THE TEST Nestled in the heart of Sherwood Forest lies Nottingham & District Gun Club.

Established for over 55 years, the club has switched from manual to robotic mowing, crediting their Husqvarna Automower® for maintaining the club’s immaculate grounds.

Directing their attention to innovative mowing in 2019, the Club chose Husqvarna Automower® 550 to maintain four of its shooting layouts. Covering up to an acre of land, the robotic mower has enabled the grounds team to free up hours of time previously spent mowing.

Carl Smith, Owner at Nottingham & District Gun Club, discussed the switch to Automower®: “For many years we’ve worked with the team at B&B Tractors as their service has always been fantastic. When we discussed the idea of turning to robotic mowing, it quickly became evident that it would be the smart thing to do, and Husqvarna Automower® stood out as the obvious choice.

The Club has always had the challenge of maintaining the grounds when clients are there, which means limited hours in which to do so. Time is the most precious thing that the ground staff have, but with limited hours to work in, it’s never something we’ve had surplus of.

Trying to keep the layout tidy has always been a challenge we’ve faced, with dandelions and daisies becoming a particular issue in the past. As quick as we’d be at removing them, the quicker they’d be at growing. We knew we needed an innovative solution, and so purchased a Husqvarna Automower® 550.”

INTERVIEW WITH CARL SMITH Carl continued: “Shortly after our Automower® was installed, it wasn’t long until we were seeing the fruits of its labour. Being able to mow day or night, in rain or shine, our layouts looked better than ever. The dandelions and daisies were also no longer an issue, as Automower® keeps the grass at a short length, just as we need it.”

One of the biggest issues the Gun Club faced was the breakage of garden machinery while being swapped between the grounds team, and the threat of theft while being stored overnight. Carl discussed: “Storing expensive equipment has always been a worry in case of break-in’s, and when tools are being swapped between many different team members, breakages are inevitable, and so it became a conscious decision to stop buying expensive equipment.

Using lower-quality equipment was okay in the short-term, but eventually we decided it was time to invest in Automower®, as a long term solution.”

With the Automower® Connect app, we’ve been able to remotely control the mower through our phones and tablets. We’re able to change its settings, track its movements, and check its status, at any time, wherever we are, it’s really remarkable.”

FOR HIGHEST SPEEDS AND MAXIMUM THROUGHPUT Since they were launched in Germany in 2002, the Fendt square balers have enjoyed an excellent reputation for their rugged and durable design, as well as high output.

When developing the next generation, the focus was on further improving these positive properties, optimising operation and simplifying maintenance. A new series has been developed that unites all of these requirements, and is also exceptionally well adapted to Vario tractors in terms of their design and technical specifications.

The basis for perfectly compressed bales The crop pickup plays a decisive role in the performance of a baler. The 2.26 m wide pickup on the Fendt square balers ensures clean crop pickup from the very beginning. The centring augers guide the material effectively into the pre-compression chamber, which guarantees a high output.

FENDT SQUARE BALERS Power Pickup for higher output The powerful pickup is positioned low over the ground for excellent swath pickup. A flat feed angle permits the crop to be guided straight into the baler. Characteristic for Fendt square balers is the large clearance between the drawbar and the pickup – designed for large windrows.

Windrows picked up completely The 2.26 metre wide pickup gently picks up even the widest swaths very quickly and with little loss.

The new roller pressure pad and deflector plate ensure a reliably smooth crop flow. Four tine bars on a double cam track ensure the clean pickup. A large spiral spring, on which the working depth can be adjusted quickly and easily, reduces the load on the pickup. Gauge wheels prevent the pickup from being lowered too far. They can be removed for transport.

Uniformly shaped bales

Longer life Effective and robust. That is the motto that applies to the entire baler. On the pickup, this is evident in the cam tracks, which are supported and guided on both sides. This guarantees safe and smooth running. The tines, which are permanently subjected to high loads, have been additionally strengthened and hardened. The frame and the bale chamber have also been reinforced, so the Fendt square balers can stand up to the highest pressure without a problem.

Two centring augers on both sides compress the crop efficiently from the very beginning and feed it into the pre-compression chamber in the width of the channel. Uniform distribution of the material over the entire width means that bales are optimally compressed during the baling process, even on the outside.
