Today is awarding the Company of the Month Award to Jules Energy for digital innovation in the energy retail sector.
Jos den Broeder realised he was onto something special when he was able to combine knowledge of the wholesale energy market with enterprising IT skills.
In 2019 he formed the company Jules Energy providing IT infrastructure to the energy sector. Now with bases in the UK, the Netherlands and the United States and with 100% positive customer feedback this company is a leading global comprehensive IT solution package.
With the current energy crisis and fluctuating energy prices causing havoc across the retail energy sector companies need a reliable IT backbone moving forward.
Jules Energy provides the perfect digital solution where all online transactions, administrative, operational functionalities are stored in one place.
Countries such as the United Kingdom have a privatised energy sector and this liberalisation of the energy market creates opportunities for customer growth portfolios. In the near future Jules Energy is hoping to expand through more western European countries. Jos den Broeder, CEO, explains the future chef-d’œuvre, “The Australian economic model follows the UK one, so if something works well there, the Australians are not far behind.”
In deregulated energy markets companies need to stand out and having robust digital solutions gives companies an edge over their competitors. The energy crisis is the perfect storm for disenchantment across the energy sector but having a digital tool to manage risk helps set energy transactions on a short and longterm basis. Markets are starting the shift from commodity to service and outcome focus and
smart energy companies are focussing on energy bills, not energy tariffs.
Jos den Broeder and the team had an exhibition stall at Utility Week Live the UK at the NEC in Birmingham. It is the UK’s largest trade show for utility industries across the energy and water sectors. Jules Energy successfully demonstrated its specialist software to the energy sector and showed how its digital tools can help manage risk.
Jules Energy sees a green future as the energy sector moves towards renewable energy sources. Wind, water and solar energy are green assets and the move to a greener sustainable future is driving market forces. Targeted software can help companies with distributed energy resources (DERs) towards complete decarbonisation.
Green Combined Power started working with Jules Energy in 2010. Working in the combined heat and power (CHP) and commercial horticulture sector the company found the IT Cloud platform allowed for a smoother more efficient operational time.
“Before Jules Energy came along I had to download data from one provider, analyse it and then
email energy suppliers half-hourly import/export forecasts almost on a daily basis.
The Jules Energy system lets me do all this in one place and it only takes minutes (often just seconds) to review, adjust and optimise the operating hours. The Jules Energy system lets me do a better job for my clients in much less time.”
The specialist software is user-friendly allowing for speedy data retrieval at a moment’s notice. The digital platform updates any changes within the day so all retrieval is up-to-date and accurate. Customers can participate in the day-ahead and intraday auctions staying on top of their transactions.
Flexitricity has been a valued UK customer of Jules Energy since 2018. Trading as a demandresponse service it wanted to sell flexible energy priced products and offer wholesale products. Using the Jules Energy platform they were able to add a full comprehensive range of energy supply products. This enabled Flexitricity to increase its customer base by 60%. Flexitricity appreciate the advanced risk strategy that Jules Energy employs – “Jules is our hedging backbone.”

In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are pleased to announce ELCO Heating Solutions as our Heating Technology Company of the Month.
ELCO is a worldwide pioneer in heating technology and has proven experience in the UK of delivering the highest standards in the commercial heating market. ELCO has the capabilities to provide intelligent, energysaving technology that is designed to meet the individual requirements of any project.
“We are the market leader in Switzerland and a long-established brand across Europe. Since 2001, ELCO has been an integral part for the Ariston Group which has a history spanning over 90 years. Our UK base is in Basildon, Essex but we have offices across Europe and beyond. We are confident of our strong presence here in the UK as we continue to set the highest standards in the commercial heating market with our heating technology and our latest renewable technology,” stated Anthony Byrne, Marketing Manager.
ELCO’s products are routinely specified for use in both public and private sector buildings. These products include renewable systems with heat pump only or hybrid solutions, highly efficient
wall-hung and floor-standing condensing boilers, heat interface units, CHP and pressure jet units, all of which are supported by a dedicated fieldbased sales team that offers free site surveys and an experienced technical department. “Our specification managers also travel the length and breadth of the country delivering free in-house CIBSE approved CPD modules for our customers,” added Anthony.
As specialists in commercial heating and hot water, ELCO prides itself on its close relationship with consultants and contractors. “We have been installing heat pumps in the UK for over 10 years so we’re well placed to provide assistance on this type of project or indeed any project where low emissions or decarbonisation is of prime importance,” said Anthony.
ELCO has a wealth of experience working on decarbonisation projects, particularly in the healthcare and education sectors, where it uses sustainable technologies such as heat pumps and hybrid systems to support green upgrades to UK buildings. ELCO’s R&D department is constantly investing in new product development and is hopeful to bring more heat pump options and hydrogen ready products to market within the next five years.
One particular product worth noting is the recent launch of ELCO’s New Hybrid System Selector Tool
which is a free software available to customers. It was designed to help reduce emissions, manage costs and save time. Anthony expanded, “The tool uses an extensive range of parameters to calculate the most suitable and sustainable heating product for a commercial project. For building services consultants working on heat pump only or hybrid system projects, ELCO’s tool can help identify the best combination of products to match requirements in minutes. The Selector Tool is suitable for planning stages 1 and 2, as it provides detailed ‘lowest yearly CO2’ and ‘lowest yearly cost’ comparisons between a heat pump only system, hybrid system and a new or existing boiler-only setup.
“The user-friendly Tool is also capable of calculating system parameters at any external temperature, as well as the Seasonal Performance Factor (SPF) as per CIBSE AM17. These calculations can be repeated across multiple system designs and flow temperatures, allowing consultants to make informed decisions on the benefits of different approaches. The Tool also offers the flexibility to select the switch point for heat sources, while providing analysis and an explanation of the selected option. It also successfully factors in weather fluctuations by referencing the hourly temperature variations
from the past three years which then allows it to create accurate temperature distribution for five key regions of the UK.”
If you would like to know how much energy will be used and the CO2 emissions produced in a new system compared to an old system, you can now book a free demo of the new Hybrid System Selector Tool with an ELCO specification manager so you can witness the usefulness first hand. This can be done at www.elco.co.uk/ selector-tool-demo/ or by scanning the QR code.

Its multi-industry experience enables Atlantas Marine to have worked with a diverse range of organisations including The Royal Navy, Shell and RWE Energy, where it offers a world class service using the highest quality equipment and specialist ROV operators. With a commitment to the environment, Atlantas Marine has a clear eco policy that aims to improve the company’s sustainability profile.
An Environmental Management System (EMS) is maintained in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14001 and all environmental issues are taken into consideration when producing the company’s aims and objectives. This ensures that legislation, codes of practice and significant sustainable requirements are complied with.
Due to a significant growth in business in recent years, Atlantas is moving into a brandnew, purpose-built building which is close to its existing base in Yeovil, Somerset. MD, Charlie Foll, said, “We are very excited about the new building. It offers a large storage area, a bigger workshop and office facilities, and the whole building will be powered and heated by solar panels, battery storage and air-source heat pumps. This significantly increases our environmental credentials.”
The company employ an openness of environmental activities with all stakeholders: employees, customers, suppliers and regulators. Not only do the company’s management review its environmental performances, it also provides continuous training and involves all employees in its environmental programs. This ensures that all staff members are highly trained and offer a unique service that assists repairs, carryout services and offers technical support with sustainability in mind.
The company continually reviews its on and offshore activities to ensure that environmental performances are both maintained and improved.
Atlantas Marine supplies
underwater inspection products and services and these ROVs carry out the inspections without the need for human divers.
This commitment to ‘Clarity at Depth’ can be carried out with the smallest ROV (VideoRay Pro5), which is barely larger than a shoe box yet it can carry a messenger wire through the monopile and back to a cableship, to assist during the turbine construction phase.
Its commitment to preventing pollution through training and education is embedded in the way Atlantas Marine does business meaning all its operations are done in the most efficient way possible to minimise and reduce emissions. The Atlantas Marine rental pool includes a wide range and choice of sonars, cameras and tooling and these products are not only built to suit each customer’s individual needs and requirements but also safeguards environmental standards.
Atlantas Marine also considers the environmental aspects of its suppliers and carriers. The policy ensures high environmental practices are regularly checked using monitoring systems. These establish realistic targets to achieve continual improvement and reduce
environmental impacts throughout the company. Emergency procedures are in place and are implemented should any accidental spillages occur. A commitment to environmental issues is also reflected in its re-use and recycling policy where its energy and waste are minimised, sending waste to landfill only as a last resort, and ensuring safe disposal of all waste when no viable alternative is available. In addition, the company strives to ensure a high standard of visual appearance is achieved on each site, creating a pleasant working environment.
As well as being a leading underwater inspection team, Atlantas Marine designs and manufactures its own innovative equipment that adheres to the company’s environmental policy. This commitment to safety, efficiency and sustainability reflects the aims and objectives of the company’s policy. Overcoming major challenges is a top priority at Atlantas Marine and its commitment to sustainability is leading the way in its vision to create a safer, cleaner, more efficient service with environmental benefits in mind.

Good indoor air quality continues to be essential for our well-being. Ineffective ventilation contributes to mould growth; dank, musty smells; condensation on windows and walls; and a general deterioration of the fabric of the building. It is known that mould growth is a particular health hazard. An increase in the incidence of house dust mites – leading to allergy problems and poor respiratory health – is another consequence of inadequate ventilation. Thus, mechanical ventilation is even more of a necessity for the 21st Century home. A well-thought out, professionally designed, efficient, quiet and
economic ventilation system is vital. Vectaire’s whole house heat recovery products are aimed at controlling all the above problems. They can be installed in all types of dwellings, and are designed to ensure that ventilation is always delivered at the optimum (and most economic and energy efficient rate) for the comfort of residents. They provide continuous ventilation by extracting pollutants and humidity and maintain a constant intake of fresh, filtered air while meeting the latest requirements for energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and economy.
Vectaire has both vertical and
horizontal MVHRs within its range. They are all low energy products with EC motors and are manufactured using the latest technologies to ensure optimum ventilation, Contact
