FIS launch best practice ‘Walls as a System’ guide
The Finishes and Interiors Sector (FIS) has launched a new Best Practice Guide – Walls as a System – to help specifiers, designers, installers and building owners ensure compatibility of compliant test evidence across building components assembled into larger supersystems.
The guide addresses a critical issue in modern construction: the tendency to design and specify building components in isolation, without considering how they interact as part of larger systems. By introducing the concept of ‘Walls as a System,’ FIS is promoting a more holistic approach to building design and construction, ensuring interfaces, penetrations, glazing and doors have compatible and compliant test evidence.

Schlüter-Systems offers over 10,000 products for durable tile and natural stone installations, including trims, waterproofing, underfloor heating, and drainage systems. These solutions are trusted worldwide for their style and reliability in bathroom design.

CaberMDF the ideal all-rounder for housebuilders
For those unfamiliar with West Fraser’s CaberMDF range, it’s worth recalling Sir Ian Botham, England’s greatest allround cricketer—excellent with bat, ball, and slip fielding, and even a professional footballer. This versatility mirrors CaberMDF’s quality. West Fraser offers five grades: Trade (Light), Pro (Standard), Trade Moisture Resistant, Pro Moisture Resistant, and Industrial. UK housebuilders use them mainly for interior fit-out—from kitchens to bedrooms and fitted furniture.
CaberMDF Trade suits general use with simple profiles, as does Trade MR, both strong and easy to machine with good decorative surfaces. Trade Pro is ideal for architectural mouldings; Pro MR handles damp conditions well. Industrial is as tough as ‘Beefy’ Botham, handling deep routed profiles, PVC membranes, and intricate designs.
David Connacher, Marketing Manager, says Pro MR withstands humid environments, perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, windowsills, and architraves. All CaberMDF boards cut cleanly without splintering, suitable for
heavy machinery and hand tools. Their high-quality fibres hold fasteners firmly, supporting wall panelling, furniture, toilet cubicles, and shopfitting.
CaberMDF meets European E1 emissions, BS EN 622 standards, carries the CE mark, is FSC certified, and is net carbon negative, produced in ISO 14001 mills using local timber to reduce embodied carbon.

Engineered solutions are taking over from natural wood
Natural timber is gorgeous and has been a building material for eons! Despite advances in construction, it still holds a special place in our hearts.
Timber, like all natural products, isn’t consistent or defect-free. Though prone to warping and splitting, sawn timber remains popular—cheap, easy to work, light, and strong. But with today's demand for precision, natural timber can't always deliver. This led to the rise of engineered wood: products made by bonding wood fibres into a homogenous material.
West Fraser has led timber panel innovation for decades.
Today’s top engineered wood products include:
▲ MDF: Made from sawdust and resin, cured under pressure for a smooth, consistent board.
▲ Particleboard: Uses larger wood particles for a similar result.
▲ OSB: Layers of resin-coated wood flakes are oriented and compressed, creating a stiff, strong board with superior bending resistance.
SterlingOSB Zero, the UK’s top
West Fraser launches a guide for architects
Tried and trusted by architects for over 50 years, West Fraser's OSB, particleboard and MDF engineered wood panels take pride of place in so many buildings today. All are net carbon negative, come with all the necessary accreditations and safety marks, and are made in the UK.
A new guide details all the information an architect or specifier needs when considering the very best panel selection. Specifying precise products means there's less margin for error; when drawing up contract documents drawings should include the product manufacturer, product name and grade to avoid contractors subbing in products that they ‘think' will do the job. Leaving such important decisions to supply teams and contractors can not only affect the sustainability and carbon footprint of a project, but also fundamentals such as the structural integrity of the build. Not all products are equal. Cheap imports from
Eastern Europe, China and South America may be appealing to contractors but cutting corners comes at a price.
All West Fraser panel products manufactured in the UK are net carbon negative and manufactured in mills that have obtained the coveted environmental ISO 14001 accreditation. Responsibly sourced, the panels are FSC-certified (CO12533) and created from locally grown timber, cutting embodied carbon from transportation.

OSB brand, is key in Modern Methods of Construction (MMCs), such as:
▲ Floor cassettes
▲ Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs): OSB skins with a foam core—strong, lightweight, and highly insulated.
“Particleboard flooring has almost completely taken over from sawn and planed floorboards,” says West Fraser brand manager David Connacher.

DHF issues caution following sectional door fatality and subsequent fine
Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) urges caution with installation, maintenance, and specification after the tragic death of 33-year-old Mark Mathers. He was strangled when his hoodie became caught in the balancing system of a sectional door at Specialist Cars Volkswagen, Aberdeen, on 15 September 2018.
Mr Mathers was replacing a broken sectional door spring when the accident occurred. The court recently fined the door company £165,000.
Aberdeen Sheriff Court found that Patrick Forman Industrial Doors failed to properly assess safety risks, including those from door springs. The company pleaded guilty to not maintaining a safe work system or providing adequate training, instruction, and supervision for staff working with door springs. Sheriff
Christine McCrossan emphasized the employer's duty to ensure employee health and safety, calling failure to do so an offence.
DHF’s Senior Training & Compliance Officer, Nick Perkins, explained the tragedy: Mr Mathers’s hood got caught while one spring was still under tension; when the tension was released, fatal injuries occurred.
DHF urges companies to always remove all spring tension carefully with correct tools before work begins, use appropriate clothing and PPE, and conduct thorough risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) under health and safety law.

C40 Curaflex Doyma Gaskets
One of the UK leading installers of pre-insulated district heating systems, Vital Energi Utilities Ltd, use Doyma Curaflex C40 Gaskets to provide a water and air tight seal for all below ground building entries. The specialist installations can be subject to slight movement through expansion and contraction as the system heats and cools.

façade as well as the HDPE outercasing.
Vital Energi’s Managing Director, Ashley Walsh, noted, “This provides our installation with an excellent termination. It provides confidence both to ourselves and our clientele that we'll leave the fully installed works sealed from any moisture ingress while providing a product that has the flexibility and capability to work alongside our very complex pre-insulated products.”

Graf UK tanks help a private school to fight fires
Graf UK Firefighting Tanks Meet Complex Needs at Remote Cotswolds School
A firefighting water system from Graf UK was installed at Kingham Hill School in the Cotswolds for its costeffectiveness, quick installation, and low maintenance.
The independent day and boarding school, located on a remote 100acre site near Chipping Norton, had previously relied on its swimming pools for firefighting due to inadequate pressure and volume from its pumped water supply.
“While fire services accepted our setup, we needed a better solution,” said bursar Catriona Thompson. “Graf’s system solved a complex issue effectively.”
The school had considered a ring main hydrant system, but costs were prohibitive. Instead, four 52,000-litre Carat XXL tanks from Graf UK were strategically placed around the site
to meet BS 3251’s 90m requirement, balancing function and aesthetics.
Consulting engineers Foreman Roberts praised the system after initially exploring piped hydrants.
“Graf’s solution was around 50% of the cost,” said director Paul Stallard. BA Hull handled the installation, citing the tanks’ lightweight yet robust design.
“They’re easy to install and well built,” said Dan Collins of BA Hull. “We value our relationship with Graf and look forward to more projects together.”

Security Teams Face Fire Safety Risks as London Fire Brigade Announces New Policy
Assist Security Group (ASG), a leading provider of operational security and risk management services, is warning building managers to prepare for a major shift in fire safety duties following a new London Fire Brigade (LFB) policy.
From 1 October 2024, LFB will no longer attend automatic fire alarm activations during 7:00am – 8:30pm in most nonresidential buildings, unless a fire is confirmed. This shifts responsibility to building managers and on-site security teams.
“This policy represents a big shift,” said Troy Hewitt, CEO of ASG. “Organisations must reassess fire safety protocols and ensure they have measures in place to protect premises and occupants.”
Key concerns:
1. Increased responsibility for fire checks
2. Potential understaffing
3. Need for more training and resources

5. Insurance and liability impacts
ASG urges building managers to act now. Services include:
▲ Tailored fire risk assessments

▲ Trained on-site officers and mobile support
▲ Solutions for tall/vacant buildings
“Do we have the manpower to ensure safety?” Hewitt asked.
“The risks are greater now. Act before it’s too late.”

Acorn Analytical Services won Gold in the category of Business of the Year (more than 50 employees) at the Northamptonshire SME Awards in May, before going up against their national counterparts in the National SME Awards.
The ceremony took place at the iconic Wembley Stadium on Friday, December 4 and saw hundreds of people from businesses all over the UK come together to see if they had been successful at winning one of the coveted trophies. Many of the finalists – Acorn Analytical Services included – made it through to the grand final after winning their category at a regional level earlier in the year.
The win topped off an incredible year for the company which included moving to larger premises at the end of 2023
and employing an additional 12 people in 2024, taking the team up to 70 staff. The company also won numerous high profile contracts, working with High Street retailers, councils and schools and raised just under £10,000 for charity through various fundraisers over the course of 2024.
Judges recognised these achievements and the 'outstanding initiative, boldness and imagination in the enterprise, as well as sound management practices'.
Max Wright, Business Development Executive at Acorn Analytical Services, attended the awards ceremony and was presented with the award on stage. He said: "Not many people can say that they have collected a trophy at Wembley. It was a night to remember. Everyone has worked so hard for this, so congratulations to all the team!"
Sam Savage, Managing Director at Acorn Analytical Services, added: "We were absolutely thrilled to take home this award. This incredible achievement is a testament to the unwavering hard work, dedication and passion of our amazing team. Fresh, a leading specialist third-party manager of residential for rent homes, is delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted for the Best Booking Experience Award for the UK and Ireland at the Global Student Living Awards (GSL). The recognition is a testament to Fresh's commitment to providing an exceptional experience for residents, starting at the point of booking.

We're absolutely thrilled to receive this recognition from GSL as we continue striving for excellence in every step of the resident journey." To help improve the experience for students further, Fresh has adapted a platform from Yardi, the investment, asset and property management software provider, to ensure it is as user-friendly as possible. The stress-free booking process, no matter the location or device, has been achieved thanks to Fresh’s innovative implementation of the platform and the introduction of additional functionalities and processes.

industry, which is reflected in the consistently positive reviews they generate from their residents."
