Flood Control International | Chemical Containment Products

Flood Control International offers a full range of chemical spill containment products to protect against chemical spillage, firefighting or deluge system run-off. Our secondary containment barriers can isolate a whole site or just part of a site to retain chemical spillages or deluge run-off on the premises.

Depending on a particular site’s risk assessment, the chemical bunds may be operated manually by personnel or automatically, triggered by means of automatic sensors. Such sensors may be triggered on sumps being filled or the fire alarm being activated to ensure rapid response even on-sites where an event may not be immediately noticed.

Chemical Spill Containment

Containment barriers allow vehicle and pedestrian access through bunds when required and save space that would otherwise be taken up with ramps to maintain a chemical bund level.

Containment gates can also be specified that swing across an opening with a dead level threshold.

We can also provide watertight doors that can retain full height liquid pressures for deep chemical bunds that require occasional maintenance access.

A choice of gasket materials means that the right gasket can be matched to the requirements of chemical resistance, fire resistance and compressibility.

Chemical Containment Barriers

Our standard barriers are tested to the rigorous TUV Certificate of Approval for openings up to 21ft wide and 2ft high. Special barriers can be provided to any size or height and individually tested for strength and watertightness

on-site when required. Multi-span sectional containment barriers can create any size and height chemical bund.

Automatic barriers and gates can be fitted with acoustic and visual warnings, obstruction sensors and anti-crush systems.

With a 50-year design life our chemical spill control barriers, gates and doors give dependable protection against contamination, chemical spillage and fire-fighting run off.

Chemical Containment Barrier Benefits

32nd International Colloquium Plastics Technology increases confidence in the innovative strength of the plastics industry

The 32nd International Colloquium Plastics Technology demonstrated clearly that the plastics industry has plenty of possibilities for meeting the many challenges that currently exist.

On February 28th and 29th, 2024, the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV) in Industry and Craft at RWTH Aachen University offered a lively forum for exchanging technical experiences and ideas. Some 600 participants from research and industry took advantage of the opportunity in the Aachen Eurogress and IKV’s technical service departments and laboratories to discuss the latest developments and technologies in the plastics segment. High-calibre plenary speakers, including VDI President Prof. Lutz Eckstein, were able to convince the audience of the innovative strength of the industry and the future of the engineering profession.

Breaking through the stress of the many day-to-day events that are increasingly characterised by crisis reports, and taking time to reflect on the present situation and recognise new per perspectives was particularly necessary

at the present time, said the Head of IKV, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Hopmann, during his welcoming speech. For this, he continued, the Colloquium offered plenty of opportunity at all different levels: Not only during the presentation of the latest research results in the 15 lecture sessions, and the guided tours by IKV’s technical service departments and laboratories, but also at the industry trade show in the foyer of the Eurogress, during the recruiting speed-dating sessions, and the guided tourstween the individual events on the agenda.

Depending on the application, the energy requirement, manufacturing times and production costs can be reduced by up to 90% or more.

With the dust-free induction of powders directly into the liquid and processing in a closed system, the risk of explosions and health hazards for the operator can be easily mitigated. Moreover, the modular design of process systems by ystral allows for a very high level of flexibility with numerous process options. Since there are no fluctuating dispersion results, ystral

technologies allow for a consistently high product quality without any rework.”

explained Dominik Seeger, Director Strategic Sales at ystral.

Next-level machinery ystral is delighted to announce the exclusive development of two new machines: BATT-TDS for fast, lithium-ion electrode slurry mixing and Coflow for continuous powder wetting & dispersing.

The BATT-TDS has been precision-designed for the requirements of battery slurry production and has the following features:

■ Inducts powders, dust-free under vacuum into a stream of liquid creating conditions for optimal dispersion of diverse components in a continuous sequence.

■ Independent control of key parameters, including flow and shear rates, offering a wide process window in a single piece of equipment.

■ Dispersion of diverse materials is uniquely tailored according to their specific physical properties and topologies.

■ The BATT-TDS achieves high product quality in a fraction of the time required by conventional processes.

■ Easily scalable across various battery chemistries, the BATT-TDS solution is suitable for production at current industrial levels and ready for tomorrow’s gigafactories.

■ The platform offers a low cost of ownership with the highest productivity per square meter of factory space.

The Coflow is a continuously operating inline powder wetting and dispersing machine for the production of dispersions. With this technology, powders can be continuously mixed in, homogenised and dispersed in

liquids in proportion to quantity. In the chemical industry, YSTRAL Coflow for example is suitable for the production of adhesives, coatings, polyester resins or silicone sealants. Amongst others, in the food sector, the continuously operating powder wetting and dispersing machine is the suitable solution for pre-products for dough production, milk and milk substitute products, as well as the production of edible collagen shells, mayonnaise or dressings. It contains the following features:

■ Compared to a classic batch process in a container, the YSTRAL Coflow enables production with a significantly reduced machine footprint, faster processing times, better OEE values and a higher degree of automation.

■ Cleaning of the machine is quicker due to reduced product contact surface area.

■ The machine is also characterised by its low energy consumption – especially at low viscosities, the Coflow has a minimal power intake.

“Our tagline is: 110% MIXING SOLUTIONS – this reflects our company aspirations. Secrets of C.A.S.E by Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies

Chemically Assisted Surface Enhancement, or CASE, is an isotropic superfinishing process which has been developed as a metal surface treatment to provide components with excellent bending and contact fatigue strength, together with resistance to high loading.

With isotropic superfinishing, a component is firstly shot peened, to create multiple indentations in the surface using the spherical shot media from which it draws its name. As each indentation is made, the surface will try to yield, but is restrained by the substrate, introducing a residual compressive stress and removing any prior manufacturing-related tensile residual stresses. This proven technique makes the surface resistant to crack initiation and propagation.

Secondary processing by further shot peening (or dual peening) at a lower intensity with modified shot size will have the effect of reducing surface roughness and increasing the compressive stress and cold working of the near surface.

Final processing is then carried out in a controlled and gentle manner using non-abrasive finishing stones together with oxalic acids: here, the most positive or peak surface areas are progressively removed, producing a mirror-like surface finish with an extremely low surface roughness.

Some of the most common applications for isotropic superfinishing by Metal Improvement Company include the manufacture of gears, transmission shafts, bearings,

cams and cam followers, journals, seal faces etc. Key benefits of isotropic superfinishing include achieving the optimum surface roughness and stress characteristics, being able to produce mirror-like finishes, the reduction of contact/surface fatigue

and the prevention of micro and macro pitting. CASE is just one of many surface finishing options available by Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies.

UNISIG further enhances Customer Service with New Parts Inventory Management System

With enhanced customer service in mind, UNISIG, a global manufacturer of deep hole drilling machines, has commissioned two new SSI Schafer LOGIMAT® vertical lift modules (VLM) into its parts warehouse. Integrated with UNISIG’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, the 20-foot-tall, high-density storage units keep parts organized and optimize inventory tracking.

Touchscreen interfaces at the VLM modules allow personnel to add or remove inventory pieces, while the purchasing team can access real-time data and reports from their desktops. The module’s trays tilt toward the operator for improved ergonomics when reaching into bins located toward the back of the tray, and a laser highlights the correct bin or location of the part requested.

With 28 tons of inventory capacity in their tray systems, the VLMs exponentially increase UNISIG’s inventory storage capability. This, in turn, allows the company to provide the spare parts customers need as quickly as possible.

“We continue to seek out and identify areas in which we can improve efficiency as well as

operational excellence at UNISIG, and this inventory system is a result of that,” said UNISIG CEO Anthony Fettig. “It also complements our commitment to having the inventory we need to serve our customers.”

The installation of the inventory warehouse VLMs is the most recent of several significant investments designed to add value to UNISIG’s customer offerings. Earlier this year, the company unveiled its newly constructed 5,000-square-foot fabrication department.

Equipped with $1.5 million in state-of-the-art technology, the expansion supports the company’s strategy to develop in-house, design-to-finish production of high-quality sheet metal components used in UNISIG’s product line. By producing many of its parts in-house, the company will preserve and maintain component quality and quantity while optimizing the mix of parts that are made internally versus those that are outsourced for production.

Please see UNISIG at AMB 2024 Stuttgart, Germany from the 10th-14th September 2024 at Hall 9C11.

Embracing personalisation with DTF

Here we discuss the rise in demand for personalisation, the subsequent rise of DTF technology, and some of the applications it can be used for.

Personalisation has been one of the standout trends in the print industry for some time now, offering customers the opportunity to create unique pieces and put their own stamp on products.

While more demand is always welcome news for print businesses, it can create some headaches in terms of having the capacity to continue to create quality work, time after time. This is especially true when it comes to personalisation and the many different designs, fonts and colours that come with it.

With this in mind, how do you ensure that you can produce quality work in a quick and cost-effective manner? One method that has increased in popularity in recent years is direct-to-film, or DTF if you would rather, which transfers print onto a range of substrates using a heat press mechanism.

You only need to look at what some of the major manufacturers are doing in this sector to see how popular the technology is becoming. Take Mimaki for example; just last year, the company released its new Mimaki TxF300-75, a production DTF printer, which is built on the same stability and functionality of the TxF150-75, its first DTF printer that launched a few months prior.

But why is the Mimaki TxF300-75, and indeed its sister machine – with well over 300 sales to date – so popular with printing companies around the world, especially when it comes to personalised print? What is it about DTF machines that makes them such a solid choice for this type of work?

First and foremost, the TxF300-75 is an incredibly cost-effective way of producing all sorts of printed pieces, be them personalised or standard. The relatively low costs of film and inks will stand print companies in good stead if they are looking to make a go of personalised print, allowing them to maximise profit on each job.

There is also the fact that the TxF300-75 is capable of producing highly accurate and quality work, repeatedly, thanks to a top print resolution of 1,440dpi. Other built-in features also help users to achieve high accuracy such as a degassed ink pack, which lowers the risk of poor ink ejection, as well as a Nozzle Check Unit and Nozzle Recovery System, both allowing for stable, uninterrupted print production.

Such is the attention to detail and ability to produce highquality output that some print

service providers are now using the Mimaki TxF300-75 to create custom designs that look like they have been embroidered. Of course, there will always be a place for old-fashioned embroidery in personalisation but being able to offer customers a similar end result, for a cheaper price, will only help to bring in more work.

DTF also typically offers a wider colour gamut than other types of printing. As such, you can offer customers a greater choice when it comes to colour for personalised work and open up more options for them. This is certainly the case with the TxF300-75, which offers users the very much sought-after white ink option. In addition, the machine features a built-in ink circulation system to prevent white ink clogging, thereby further enhancing ease of production.

It is also important to remember that it is not only the design that differs on personalised printed work. To maximise the reach of your services, you need to be offering a wide range of options to customers, rather than just a handful of personalised products. With the TxF300-75, the machine can handle all manner of fabric such as cotton, mixed fabric, polyester, and dark coloured fabrics – all in widths of up to 810mm.

What is more, customers who run the TxF30075 can also respond to rising customer demand for more sustainable printed work. The machine prints directly onto DTF film using Mimaki’s PHT50 pigment inks, which are ECO-PASSPORT certified, validating their lower environmental impact and meeting the requirements for OEKO-TEX certification.

Of course, working with a quality printer can only get you so far; you also need reliable substrates to ensure success in personalised print. With this in mind, Soyang Europe will soon add a new DTF film to its range of solutions.

Available to purchase from early July, customers can combine this specialist film with the leading qualities of the Mimaki printer to produce high-quality personalised print for customers across a range of markets.

resulting in set servicing schedules.

PPM’s defining feature is a consistent, routine program of standardised maintenance tasks.

CBM (Condition Based Monitoring)

Whereas PPM follows a fixed-interval, CBM uses live data to predict when a part will need replacement.

This approach can extend asset lifetime, save unnecessary interventions, and catch issues earlier.

Condition data can come from a mix of periodic measurements and continuous monitoring. CBM requires accurate sensors and records to reveal trends before they become problematic.

Atlantic Pumps specialise in increasing asset lifetime and uptime in challenging, abrasive slurry applications. Their pump engineers and technological solutions are available across the UK and Ireland.

Biodegradable plastics: A proven solution to the problem of marine plastic waste

Symphony Environmental Technologies

Plc, specialists in the biodegradation of plastics, have welcomed a report from Tokyo University confirming the biodegradation of biodegradable plastics in harsh deep-sea environments. The report says, “Biodegradable plastics are receiving increasing attention. Conventional plastic, used for the parts, packaging, and containers of various products, is known to end up in the sea only to never decompose. There, it causes adverse effects on the environment. This has sparked the rising importance of transitioning to biodegradable plastics that can be broken down by micro-organisms.”

Plastic production for use in products in all industries is reported to be approximately 400 million tons worldwide each year. Reports also show that every year, about 8 million tons are thrown away and end up in the ocean. The great majority are plastics synthesized from petroleum that microorganisms cannot break down.

Green energy opportunities grow as Precision Micro expands its production facility

Plastic shopping bags, food containers, and bottles used by consumers generate massive amounts of waste. Some remain outdoors due to littering or inadequate collection, eventually end up in rivers, and flow into the sea.

According to the team’s calculations, a biodegradable plastic shopping bag will decompose in approximately 3 weeks to 2 months off Hatsushima at a depth of 855 metres.

Michael Laurier, CEO of Symphony Environmental (www.d2w.net) said, “This study correlates with the studies already done in the marine environment, the most important of which is the four-year Oxomar study sponsored by the French National Agency for Research: www.biodeg.org/ wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Finalreport-OXOMAR-10032021.pdf which clearly shows that biodegradable plastics biodegrade in seawater and do so with a significantly higher efficiency than conventional plastics. The oxidation level obtained due to the d2w prodegradant catalyst was found to be of crucial importance in the degradation process.”

Global chemical etching supplier

Precision Micro has announced the delivery of a new etching and stripping machine at its Fort Dunlop site in Birmingham, UK, finalising its second new etch room.

Part of a £1.8 million investment reported last year, the business believes it is now uniquely placed to meet the increasing global demand for next-generation energy technologies such as hydrogen production and storage, carbon capture, green energy buffering, electric, and hydrogen electric vehicles.

Karl Hollis, Precision Micro’s Director of Engineering, said, “With carbon neutrality and net zero a crucial agenda item for many countries and businesses around the world, there is an ever-growing appetite for complex etched components used in the production, storage, recovery and transfer of green energy. This includes components such as printed circuit heat exchangers, busbar battery interconnects, bipolar plates for fuel cells and electrolysers used for hydrogen production.”

“The increased volumes needed to meet this demand, however, often require much larger and thicker sheets of metal to be used and after many conversations with customers in the green energy

sector it became clear there was a gap in the market for a supplier that had the capacity and equipment to manufacture these components.”

“Believed to be an industry first, the new etch room facility is home to six new state-of-the-art etching and stripping machines, as well as an automatic exposure unit which enables larger sheet metals up to 1,500mm x 600mm x 2.5mm in size to be etched in production volumes. In addition to increasing throughput and delivering cost savings to customers, the new equipment also minimises human interaction and manual handling.”

Union Industries blows away competition with use of virtual reality configurator

Union Industries, the UK’s leading manufacturer of bespoke industrial doors, has utilised virtual reality (VR) to help Leedsbased Met Fab Solutions maintain comfortable working conditions with the installation of a Bulldoor.

Union Industries has successfully deployed its innovative new VR software to assist Met Fab Solutions, a leading UK manufacturer of aluminium panels and aluminium pressings, specify and configure the correct door suited to its needs.

This innovative tool allows Union to immerse prospective clients in a 3D showroom where they can experience their high-speed door offerings and interact with the products in a virtual environment. The software, comprising a VR headset and handheld units representing the customer’s hands, showcases the extensive features, specifications and benefits of Union Industries’ products.

Met Fab’s powder coating facility contains an extraction unit which draws the temperature outside of the

building to keep the area cool during hotter periods. However, when windy, the extraction unit causes a wind-chill resulting in employee discomfort, hence the company’s need for a fast acting and reliable door.

The Bulldoor not only ensures the integrity of Met Fab’s facility but also significantly reduces the impact of adverse weather conditions. Operated conveniently via remote control, the door incorporates a ‘Crash-Out & Auto-Reset’ feature as a standard safety measure, minimising costs associated with door impacts.

Renowned for their reliability and efficiency, Union Industries’ doors, including the Bulldoor, have become the preferred choice for manufacturers dealing with heat loss and escalating energy prices. With a robust design requiring minimal maintenance, these doors can withstand constant high-volume operations, making them an ideal solution for industrial settings.

68% of UK industry at risk of failing on-the-spot Health and Safety Executive inspection

■ New research has found that nearly one-fifth (17%) of UK industries, from renewables and telecoms to defence and transport, have received enforcement action at some point due to fixed and movable assets not meeting HSE compliance standards, with over 10% receiving an HSE fine

■ Nearly 50% of organisations said that their asset data isn’t sufficiently detailed, nor updated or recorded accurately enough, to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other HSE regulations that apply to their sectors

■ 86% of respondents said they would like to see improvements to their asset management systems

■ 42% still use paper-based methods to record, update, and store critical maintenance data, with over half using Excel

in 10 organisations operating in some of the UK’s biggest industries admit that they are unlikely to comply with on-the-spot Health & Safety Executive (HSE) inspection due to a lack of data proving that their fixed and moveable assets are managed and maintained to the required regulatory standards.

Nearly one-fifth (17%) have received enforcement action in the past due to assets not meeting HSE compliance standards, with over 10% receiving an HSE fine.

The new research on 2,000 UK businesses, commissioned by enterprise asset management (EAM) solutions specialist, BPD Zenith surveyed organisations operating in the utility and renewable industries, including telecoms and broadband, as well as the defence, transport, pharmaceutical, and healthcare sectors.

The findings revealed that nearly 50% of these organisations’ moveable or fixed asset data isn’t detailed, nor updated or recorded accurately enough to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 or other HSE regulations that apply to their sectors.

Latest HSE figures for 2022/2023 show that there were 60,645 employee non-fatal injuries reported by employers during this period and 135 deaths as a result of work-related accidents. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 legally and duty bounds companies to ensure the safe working environment for employees and third-parties, including the general public, who may be affected by an organisation’s activities. The HSE compliance standards work alongside the Health and Safety Act, designed to protect people and the environment. Penalties for failure to comply can include fines, orders for operations to cease, and imprisonment if the misconduct is found to be serious enough.

86% of respondents did acknowledge that improvements to their asset management systems and processes are required to drive up the quality, completeness, and consistency of their data. Asset management systems are operational processes and tools that help manage the performance and maintenance of fixed or moveable assets. These assets include everything from production and manufacturing machinery to equipment found in buildings such as HVAC systems, elevators, and security doors, and any vehicles used in day-to-day operations.

42% also confirmed they still use outdated paperbased methods in part or in full to record, update, and store maintenance data, with over half using Excel spreadsheets, rather than using digital asset management solutions.

Amongst the priority improvements to their asset management strategies, 68% recognised the need for enhanced data quality, 50% highlighted improved analytics, and 46% identified a need for better systems integration with their existing EAM solutions.

Findings also identified a greater demand from organisations for improved field-based, mobile data capturing and utilisation solutions. Nearly half of all responses (47%) said recording data in the field, not being able to record data at the point of work, a lack of intuitive forms, and not having technical data and maintenance manuals at the point of use, as the biggest challenge to keep asset management and maintenance data updated. Access to real-time inventory levels (18%) and struggling to plan, schedule, and dispatch work to multiple crafts and contractors (11%) were amongst the other challenges organisations faced.

Roger Walker, Group Head of Innovation at BPD Zenith said, “The results from this survey have been surprising in

part. However, what they do identify is that 80% of these companies probably aren’t where they need to be in their asset management digital transformation journey. What they need to identify though is why. Do they have the right asset management strategy, processes and tools in place? If not, is this due to a lack of resources, either through investment in the right equipment, or software, or people, or it may be a case that data collection and analytics are not sufficiently high on their list of priorities.”

Walker continued, “HSE inspections are essential for ensuring organisations of all shapes and sizes are adopting best practices which align to the legal standards expected on health, safety and an organisation’s environmental impact in their industries. These checks can also help pinpoint where processes may be weaker and help implement measures aimed at strengthening these areas. The penalties for noncompliance can be hugely detrimental to businesses, not just financially but reputationally too.”

“We work with organisations across an extensive spectrum of industries, from utilities, oil and gas, transport and logistics, and manufacturing to defence and security, life sciences and facilities management. Over recent years, we have seen a growing demand for mobile solutions to support asset management amongst those organisations with large, complex and field-based estates. As well as a growing need for solutions to capture data, there is also an increasing demand for tools that support the teams maintaining these assets, whether that’s in the form of planning and scheduling tools for work order management, or intuitive solutions while they are on the job.”

Getting A4 Health and Safety signs up and visible without a fuss

Inthe constantly changing world of workplace risk and the need to get risks identified when they present themselves – a larger format solution without unnecessary fuss is becoming ever more necessary.

Fuss is messy inks – tedious waiting for a multi-ribbon device to drag itself through four passes – software that requires qualified and trained users and for an outdoor durability some extra protective coatings or lamination.

To get an A4 Health and Safety message printed and in place can be both a very fast and an easy process if you use the SMS 830 from Rebo Systems.

The SMS 830 is a new product for larger health and safety sign production.

One AZM40 for all situations

The world’s smallest electronic solenoid interlock AZM40 now offers even more versatile application options with new accessories and new features. With dimensions of 119.5 x 40 x 20mm, it is particularly suitable for small safety gates or maintenance hatches and confined installation spaces. Despite its compact design, the AZM40 achieves a remarkable locking force of 2,000N.

With the new lockout tag, the AZM40 can now also be used for larger, accessible machines and systems. Service staff can attach a lock to the lockout tag when entering the danger zone. This means that the door of the safety guard cannot be closed, and unintentional start-up of the machine is prevented.

In addition, the new versions of the AZM40 solenoid interlock can be extended with an emergency exit or emergency release. Two different versions – with lever or push-button – are available. The lever is available both as an emergency exit and as an emergency release and can be mounted directly on the AZM40. The push button is also available as an escape release or emergency release. Its similarity to an emergency stop button makes it intuitive to operate. The emergency exit ensures that any trapped persons can free themselves from the

machine area. The emergency release is used to ensure that the danger zone in a machine can be reached quickly in an emergency – e.g. in the event of a fire.

The new ‘inner values’ of the AZM include the addition of the high degree of protection IP69 and the temperature range of -20°C to +55°C, which open up additional application possibilities.

Another advantage is the long service life with now 500,000 switching cycles (actuator cycles) and 1,000,000 switching cycles (locking cycles).

The bistable interlock principle of the AZM40 is also sustainable, with the advantage of permanently lower power consumption. Compared to monostable solenoid interlocks, more than 50% of the power consumption can be saved. A further advantage is the added safety: even in the event of a power failure, the safety door remains securely closed during hazardous run-on movements.

Thanks to the 180-degree angle flexibility, the actuator can approach the AZM40 continuously so that the interlock can also be used on flaps that do not close at a 90 degree angle or that open upwards at a 45 degree angle. The angle flexibility ensures that the interlock can be easily installed even in confined and difficult-to-access locations.

The AZM40 can be easily mounted on standard 40mm profiles with no overhang. For other profile

system widths (20mm, 30mm, 45mm, 50mm and 60mm), a set of two universal mounting plates can be used for the AZM40 and actuator. This ensures quick and cost-effective installation for a wide range of profile system widths.
