From collaboration to innovation: Titan Enterprises & RWC partner on breakthrough dispense solution

Since designing their first beverage flowmeter in the early 1990s, Titan Enterprises, a leading UK manufacturer of liquid flow measurement solutions, has had a long-standing supplier relationship with John Guest, part of the RWC’s family of brands.

Starting out in 1949 as Reliance Manufacturing Company Pty Ltd (RMC) with a drive to transform industry, RWC was later born from the desire to challenge convention. A major landmark for the company came in 2018 with the acquisition of John Guest and its globally renowned push-fit brands.

Titan’s NSF-Approved beverage meter, 800-series turbine flowmeters, and the Atrato® ultrasonic flowmeter range all incorporate John Guest connectors, which are extensively used in the food and beverage industry for their specialised ‘push-toconnect’ solutions.

In 2023, following years of evolving innovation since the launch of JG PolarClean by John Guest in 2010, RWC teamed up with Titan Enterprises to deliver an exciting solution for the beverage industry. A mutual customer discussion sparked the R&D collaboration,

as users were already pairing RWC’s PolarClean pushfit connectors alongside Titan’s Beverage meters in beer dispensing systems. However, integrating the two products required additional modifications – introducing cost and complexity to a customer’s installation. Together, RWC and Titan set out to change that.

To simplify installation and enhance efficiency, RWC and Titan began a partnership that led Titan to leverage its expertise in turbine technology and design, while RWC contributed its innovative tooling capabilities. The aim of the collaborative project was to provide a streamlined, state-of-the-art single unit for beer dispensing systems by fully integrating Titan’s turbine flow technology within RWC’s pioneering PolarClean connector.

The primary challenge was fitting the turbine into the PolarClean tube/connector without compromising either system. Through workshops, prototyping and design, the teams developed a modified version of RWC’s straight PolarClean union. SLA (stereolithography apparatus) 3D-printed models were used to create prototypes, which were then tested and calibrated by Titan before customer trials.

Bristol Fungarium

Bristol Fungarium is the first UK-native and organic certified mushroom farm. As an organic farmer and former forest school leader, founder Tom Baxter turned his penchant for fungi into a venture of medicinal mushroom tinctures that are locally foraged, organically farmed and lovingly formulated as well as being recommended by healthcare practitioners across the nation.

In 2020, Bristol Fungarium began cloning UK-native strains and pouring hours into clinical trials to establish the optimal way to extract and make bioavailable the myriad compounds of interest.

Since then, they’ve built an in-house lab and have begun working with third party labs, Analytical Chemists and Neuroscientists to test their extracts for composition, quality and efficacy.

Bristol Fungarium have appeared at festivals nationwide and pop up at well-known South West markets. Along the way, they’ve teamed up with brands like Radek’s Chocolate; blending their UK-native Lion’s Mane with vegan and organic chocolate to create an award winning functional treat. Today they crop over a ton of fungi each month including UK-native Lions Mane, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Oysters, Maitake, Cordyceps & Shiitake. Looking to the future, the team are committed to deepening their research, expanding their pioneering UKnative mushroom offering, and continuing to grow a community of fantastic fungi-loving folk.

www.bristolfungarium.com

Once the final design was validated, RWC developed the injection moulding tool for the PolarClean body, while Titan managed the sensor and turbine technology. After minor modifications, the first units were shipped to customers for final performance validation.

The partnership resulted in a fully integrated innovative solution for the beverage industry: the JG PolarClean system uses ‘tube-in-tube’ technology to ensure beer is kept extra cold and conditioned from the keg to the beer font, even without the need for a cellar. Featuring a standard 3-wire connector, this state-of-the-art product simplifies beer dispense system installations. The JG PolarClean Coaxial Flow Meter accurately measures liquid flow enabling system users to monitor demand or supply usage in coaxial cooling systems.

Titanic Brewery reveals new interpretation of their flagship beer

2025 marks 40 years since Titanic Brewery first started brewing prize ales from their home in Stoke-on-Trent. From humble beginnings, the brewery today ships out over 3 million pints of beer across the country, from rich stouts to hoppy IPAs.

There is however one beer that Titanic Brewery are particularly known for – their genre-defining Plum Porter. This 4.9% abv speciality porter marries the roasty flavours of a porter with the sweet fruitiness of plums to create a rich, complex beer beloved by many. In

fact, the popularity of Plum Porter has helped Titanic to become the largest producer of stouts and porters in England.

To mark 40 years of great beers, Titanic’s brewers have released a new version of their flagship beer – Plum Porter Nitro.

This incarnation of the muchloved porter takes the same classic recipe and infuses it with nitrogen. This creates much smaller bubbles in the beer, giving an effortlessly silky smooth beer with a rich fruit aroma and a tight, creamy head.

Best served chilled, Plum Porter Nitro is available now in kegs to be enjoyed in a sunny pub beer garden, or in 440ml nitro cans to enjoy at home by the BBQ.

After eight years of serving fresh, soul-warming pasta in four central London restaurants, Emilia’s Crafted Pasta is entering a new chapter with the launch of its first-ever range of dried pasta for home cooking.

Crafted in the small Italian town of Gragnano – nestled on the southern slopes of Mount Vesuvius and renowned as the birthplace of dried pasta – Emilia’s new range draws on centuries of pastamaking tradition dating back to the 16th Century.

The award-winning range features three distinctive shapes: Casarecce, Bucatini, and Rigatoni. Each batch is slow-dried at low temperatures for 9 to 18 hours, preserving the pasta’s authentic flavour and ideal texture – the traditional way.

Certified with the prestigious European PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) and backed by the Gragnano Pasta Consortium, Emilia’s pasta is a true mark of provenance, quality,

and uncompromising production standards.

The brand’s visually striking, emotion-led packaging also puts sustainability first. Made from 100% recyclable, FSCcertified paper, it avoids the plastic laminates commonly used in pasta packaging – reducing environmental impact and supporting circular economy principles.

Mixing and dispersion technology specialist ystral builds new validation centre

ystral is investing around 1.8 million euros in a new validation centre at its headquarters in Ballrechten-Dottingen (Germany). The centre will enable the machine and plant manufacturer to carry out more tests than before and further improve the testing conditions for its customers. Users do not have to be on site during the tests but can also follow them remotely via livestream.

ystral plans, designs and manufactures highly efficient mixing, dispersing and powder wetting machines as well as process systems for the food industry. The new validation centre expands ystral’s testing capacities, as the existing application technology centre and a development laboratory have reached their capacity limits. “The construction of the new validation centre is a major step in the history of our company – because this is ultimately the place where we come together with our customers,” says Peter Manke, Managing Director and co-owner of ystral. The validation centre is scheduled for completion by the end of October.

In the new building, production companies will have the opportunity to test ystral technologies, train their

operating personnel on ystral machines and use the testing facilities for method and product development.

The validation centre offers numerous analysis options. Samples can be examined with regard

to various factors using the optical microscope: Both density measurement and particle size analysis with dynamic light scattering are possible. In addition, viscosities can be determined using various measuring methods with and without tempering and curves of various shear rates can be plotted.

Already today, manufacturing companies from all over the world are utilising ystral’s testing facilities. With the new validation centre, the mixing technology specialist aims to further expand its international presence.

Introducing Scalibur™:

Next-level potato slicing with dual rotation technology

FAM STUMABO introduces the Scalibur™, a revolutionary potato slicer designed to deliver unmatched gentleness and efficiency. This innovative machine features a patented rotation technology where both the cutting head and the impeller rotate for a controlled and gentle cutting process.

Whereas potatoes were previously pushed against a static knife, the Scalibur™ features a rotating blade that slices through the potato at a lower speed. This, combined with the independent centrifugal force of the impeller, minimises impact damage to the potato’s cell structure. This results in less starch and scrap loss and thus less fryer contamination.

The slicer is equipped with powerful dual stainless-steel motors and the patented Smart Slicing system allows differential speed adjustments with varying gravities. The reduced impact on

blades and segments from foreign objects results in lower parts consumption and repair costs.

The slicer is widely used in potato chip production, but also delivers perfect results in the production of vegetable chips from carrots, beetroot, sweet potatoes, taro, parsnip, etc. Supplied with a full range of interchangeable cutting heads, Scalibur™ allows for different types of cuts to be produced: flat, crinkle or V-cut slices or sticks in many dimensions.

www.fam-stumabo.com

“Users don’t have to be on site during the tests, but can follow them remotely via livestream,” explains Uwe Klaumünzner, Head of the ystral validation centre. “However, many of our customers still like to come back to us because of our hospitality, our comprehensive support during the trials – and not least because of the scenic surroundings.”

Bluewater’s Café Station wows industry pros at London Coffee Festival with precision brewing technology

Swedish beverage company

Bluewater made a commanding impression at this year’s London Coffee Festival, becoming a standout presence among industry leaders, roasters, and baristas at the Truman Brewery. With its new Café Station powered by patented Liquid Rock technology, the Swedish water innovation company delivered a precision mineralisation system that enables baristas to tailor water composition to match specific roast profiles, offering a new level of control and consistency that resonated strongly with professionals across the specialty coffee sector.

Visitors to the Bluewater stand had the exclusive opportunity to experience the outstanding performance of the Bluewater Café Station, powered by Bluewater’s patented Liquid

Rock technology. Designed to deliver precise and consistent mineralisation, the system gives baristas unparalleled control over their brews – an innovation many declared a game changer.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome at the London Coffee Festival,” said Bluewater UK sales chief, Antonio Tedeschi. “It was a pleasure to be there and connect with so many inspiring individuals across the coffee industry, from machine manufacturers and roasteries to independent café owners. There was a genuine buzz around the Bluewater system, the coffee we served, and the unique way our technology supports quality and consistency.”

The Bluewater team was also joined by a few of its valued customers and coffee pioneers –Douglas Condé from Daytrip, Tom from Batch Baby, and Tom Curran from Naked Ground Coffee – who served as guest baristas during the event. Thanks to Bluewater’s mineralised water with optimised TDS levels, each could showcase the full potential of their signature roasts with clarity, flavour, and consistency.

Bluewater’s impact extended beyond its own stand. The company was honoured to supply purified and mineralised water to exhibitors

across the festival. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting that Bluewater’s water enhanced their coffee offerings’ taste, aroma, and overall experience, without any interruptions or compromise.

As Bluewater continues its mission to redefine the role of water in specialty coffee, its presence at the London Coffee Festival affirms its position as a leader in sustainability, innovation, and coffee excellence.

“We’re excited as a worldleading water purification and beverage company to continue expanding across the UK,” Tedeschi added, “and remain committed to helping our current and future coffeeindustry customers bring out the very best in every bean.”

OTC Beverages

OTC

Beverages is a family owned, multi award nominate and award winning brand of premium non-alcoholic beverages based on traditional Caribbean flavours.

Seven years ago at her dad’s 80th birthday, Shirley White had the spark of an idea for a new business. “I looked around and in our community we make a lot of homemade food and people bring their drinks to parties in plastic reusable water bottles,” she says. “I thought, surely there’s a better way of presenting the drinks? The majority of my children’s generation, are not going to do what my father’s generation and the generation before did, which is making the drinks at home.”

Shirley’s background was miles away from the drinks industry. After spending time working for local government, she spied an ad in the Evening Standard that caught her eye and went along to a wine and cheese evening – which landed her a customer services role in the world of Market

Data and investment banking. After 30 years working in the City for companies including Telerate, Deutsche Bank and HSBC, she was ready for her next challenge –so OTC Beverages was born. OTC offers sorrel, lime juice and non-alcoholic ginger beer in bottles and cans that are stocked in take-aways and corner shops across London.

within large organisations,” she explains. “It’s also networking with a lot of people, asking questions and ultimately doing your research. I used all those skills to look for the right people to work with and looking at how the packaging and bottle design was going to be viewed by the consumer.”

Although it’s a new industry for her, Shirley says there have been plenty of transferable skills from her former life in Finance. “It’s the skills you get from project management and juggling a number of programmes

From the start, Shirley knew she didn’t want to be making the drinks at home but says it took some time to perfect the recipes in the factory. She adopted a less-is-more philosophy to the formulation – keeping the various components to a minimum and using only identifiable quality ingredients such as organic cane sugar instead of artificial sweetener or stavia. She emphasises the natural health benefits of ginger, lime juice and sorrel, as well as their potential in an ever-growing market for no- and lowalcohol drinks. And her flavours are already proving popular, with OTC Beverages shortlisted for a number of accolades including the Great British Food Awards.

Shirley is now working to bring her products to more locations in London, and has plans to go global. There’s a few logistical wrinkles to iron out, but she’s hoping to bring her sorrel lime juice and ginger beer to America and Africa eventually. “It’s at the age where you’re growing the brand, you want to take on momentum, and you want it to be an identifiable brand of choice when people go to a shop to buy a cold drink.” T

98% recycled-content flexible film now available from Yorkshire Packaging Systems

A98% recycled content, fully recyclable PE (polyethylene) flexible film, used for shrink wrapping and bagging applications, is now available from automated packaging distributor Yorkshire Packaging Systems (YPS).

“This new material contains the highest level of recycled content of any flexible film on the market,” stated Josh Gibson, YPS Sales Director.

“For our customers, this means a reduced environmental footprint by virtually removing the use of virgin material. Not only that, but due to the film’s high quality, the material thickness can be reduced, lowering overall plastic use by up to, and sometimes more than, 15%.”

The flexible film is a specific blend of highgrade recycled materials and is available in a wide range of sizes to cover a vast array of applications. It is also available in a choice of colours or can be printed in up to 12 colours for enhanced branding or to create impactful marketing messages.

While the market is awash with self-accredited greenwashing claims, this material holds two independent certifications which validate its sustainable qualities:

● ISCC PLUS certification from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) System. This certification scheme supports the circular economy by validating the sustainability characteristics of the supply chain and confirming that producers comply with clearly defined sustainability standards.

● The Plastica Seconda Vita (Plastic Second Life) certification from the Italian-Based IPPR (Institute for the Promotion of Recycled Plastics). This certifies the recycled nature of the source materials of the product, with a focus on the quality and traceability of those materials.

“As a supplier of both equipment and materials for automated packaging processes, YPS is ideally placed to advise our customers on how

their whole packaging system can be designed to reduce material consumption or use more sustainable materials to achieve their own sustainability goals,” commented Gibson.

All of the materials supplied by YPS are 100% recyclable and many are available with significant recycled content. The company has also recently announced its mission to achieve Net Zero by 2035.

Beatson Clark showcases products and services

Glass packaging manufacturer

Beatson Clark was in Liverpool in March to catch up with customers and make new connections at BeerX.

Beatson Clark supplies bottles to many breweries in the UK and overseas and showcased its range of beer bottles and its new spray decoration service at the popular brewers’ event.

Beatson Clark bottles are a popular choice for many breweries beer brands including BrewDog, Robinsons and Greene King.

The company’s brewing customers range from smaller craft brands that want standard bottles available from stock, to larger breweries looking for fully bespoke bottles from 300,000 units.

For years now craft brewers have been taking advantage of Beatson Clark’s flexible service customising standard beer bottles. If budgets don’t allow for a completely new bespoke design, Beatson Clark can customise standard bottles to reflect a beer’s branding and image.

Embossing can be added to standard bottles on

production runs as low as 150,000 units, and mould costs are reduced by half. This creates a bespoke look to enhance a brewery’s brand in a cost-effective way and at very low volumes.

Charlotte Pike, Marketing Manager at Beatson Clark, said, “As silver sponsors of SIBA we have been attending BeerX for a number of years and as usual we really enjoyed it!

“This year we were also promoting our new spray decorating service. We can achieve an array of visual and tactile finishes and effects, and we can also apply a UV coating to white flint bottles to provide protection against light strike.

“This protection is something that’s already offered by our dark amber bottles, which are popular among breweries as they provide over 90% protection from UV rays, which can cause light strike in beers.

“Glass remains the most healthy and sustainable material to package your beer. In addition to the high recycled content and recyclability of glass, it is also completely inert. This means that glass is the only mainstream packaging for beer that does

not require a resin or plastic liner.”

Alongside the industry trade show, breweries which were named winners in their region competed to be crowned national champion in a range of categories judged by an expert panel.

Beatson Clark was proud to present awards in two categories this year: Castle Brewery’s Gorse Wild Golden Ale won gold in the Bottle/Can Sour & Wild Ale category, while Triple fff Brewery’s Alton’s Pride won gold in the Bottle/Can British Ales category.
