Calling all Care Homes: Make your business Cleaner, Leaner & Greener

We are delighted to showcase Biological Preparations as our Sustainable Cleaning Manufacturer Company of the Month

Biological Preparations is a leading Biotechnology company, with a growing global outlook. Care homes are still grappling with optimised hygiene measures in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What if it was possible to combine highperformance hygiene control, with lower costs whilst reducing carbon emissions?

Introducing the BioHygiene range from Biological Preparations: made with sustainable, low hazardous materials, helping your care home not only reach ESG targets but keep costs to a minimum too.

Expertise in Biotechnology Established over fifteen years ago, Biological Preparations began by offering environmental biotechnology solutions to the industrial sector, helping to tackle some of the world’s toughest cleaning challenges such as odour control in landfill and algae on ships. Just before Lockdown, the Caerphilly-based utilised their high-performing, sustainable technology to launch a new range of hygiene products for the care sector.

“Our range took off, due to growing cleaning and hygiene demands as well as the pressure on businesses to tackle Net Zero and protect workers’ health. Our technology is proven to tackle all types of cleaning challenges in care homes, from odour control to stain and limescale removal all whilst safeguarding vulnerable residents and staff with low-hazardous formulations. Our raw materials also have a significantly lower carbon footprint to traditional chemicals, helping businesses achieve their ESG goals.”

“BioHygiene is a proud finalist in the forthcoming Technological Innovation of the Year at the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards 2024 and we have partnered with national care providers

to supply our leading range of products across many UK care homes,” outlined Rosie Thomas, Head of Marketing.

Outstanding benefits of using BioHygiene products

The market-leading product range offer care homes extensive benefits across the entire cleaning regime and sustainability best practices such as:

: 65% stock keeping unit (SKU) reduction

: 25% cost-savings

: 45% storage reduction

: 90% carbon reduction

: 50% plastic reduction

: 45% transport savings

It is now well known that the petrochemical ingredients in many standard cleaning products can irritate asthma/respiratory conditions, and even cause eye and skin conditions, notwithstanding the damage to aquatic ecosystems.

Furthermore, the high dilution rates of BioHygiene means the products last longer resulting in fewer orders and delivers. Just 1 x 5L All Surface and Floor cleaner makes up 1,200 trigger bottles, and with care homes tight on space, less storage space is needed.

Expert-led science

BioHygiene utilises natural, sustainable ingredients, both kind-acting to the planet, staff and protective to vulnerable residents. Microbes, free enzymes and

plant extracts work synergistically to deep-clean, disinfect, descale and deodorise, leaving areas clean and safe. The biofilm created by microbes ensures deep cleaning of even the most porous surfaces and provide longlasting residual cleaning power, making subsequent cleaning less intensive and ensuring heightened odour control.

That’s not all: due to its highperformance properties, less product usage is needed, meaning less deliveries and lower carbon emissions.

“We use PCR and FSC cardboard for packaging, so there is no needless waste, supporting the circular economy. Our entire production process is laser focused on preventing waste and reducing waste, aligned with the UN’s SDG Goals.”

“Looking to the long-term future, we hope to start partnering with NHS Frameworks and branch out into hospital settings.”

Care Show London 2024 review

In 2021/22, 818,000 UK adults received social care in care/nursing homes or in their own homes, through publicly funded long-term social care. There were a further 224,000 cases of short-term care provision. There is an ongoing worry that demand is outstripping supply, with the 1.5 million adult social care workers struggling to meet growing care needs.

The Care Show London 2024 was held from the 24th-25th April at the award-winning ExCeL venue in London and didn’t shy away from tackling this recruitment crisis, with panel discussions on all aspects of recruitment, including international visas.

This year’s leading event attracted over 200 leading suppliers, 180 top speakers and over 3,000 visitors across six training zones, with exhibitors delighted at how well the show was organised, with clear signage and spacing and high-quality footfall.

Nick Powell Photography: Bespoke 360° Virtual Tours and Drone Photography for care homes

Nick Powell Photography has been providing photography services to the care sector since 2017 and has worked with some of the largest care groups in the UK. Specialising in high-quality still photography, 360° Virtual Tours and Drone Photography for care homes looking to enhance their marketing efforts. With a deep understanding of the unique needs of the care industry, Nick Powell Photography can play a pivotal role in showcasing the environment, services, and care facilities, which is crucial for attracting potential residents and their families.

Still Photography

In an industry where trust and comfort are paramount, the importance of first impressions cannot be overstated. High-quality still photography allows care homes to present themselves in the best possible light. Professional images of the facility’s interiors, exteriors, and surrounding environment can significantly elevate a care home’s online presence. These photographs can be used across various marketing channels, including websites, brochures, and social media platforms, to create a visually appealing and consistent brand image.

Through carefully composed and well-lit images, Nick can highlight the warmth of a care home’s atmosphere, the cleanliness of the facilities, and the friendliness of the staff. Such images are instrumental in helping families feel more confident in choosing a care home for their loved ones.

Bespoke 360 Virtual Tours & Google Street View Beyond still photography, Nick also offers 360° Virtual Tours, a powerful tool for care homes to provide a more immersive experience to potential residents and their families. A 360° Virtual Tour allows people to explore the care home from the comfort of their own home, which is especially valuable for those who may be unable to visit

in person due to distance, health concerns, or time constraints.

These interactive tours can give a real sense of the space, helping viewers to visualise what it would be like to live there. Prospective residents can virtually walk through the corridors, visit different rooms, and get a feel for the overall environment, all of which can aid in making an informed decision. Moreover, virtual tours can be easily integrated into a care home’s website or Google Business profile, broadening the reach to a wider audience.

In an industry where trust, comfort, and transparency are essential, Nick Powell Photography offers care homes the tools to effectively communicate their offerings. These services not only enhance marketing efforts but also help build a connection with prospective residents and their families.

REVIEW - Top Exhibitors

Crabb Engineering Ltd: 30 years of precision in UK manufacturing

Founded by Martin Crabb and business partner David Jones in 1994, Crabb Engineering has been operating out of North Wales and is still proud to have their main factory in Flint. Things have certainly progressed since those early days. And, whilst always being focussed on quality and customer service, advancements in manufacturing technology are something that they have always invested in.

virtually all other materials, ferrous and non-ferrous. With the recent addition of a WidLaser® F150, Laser Marking can now be offered in-house.

working from customer supplied 3D files. A quick and easy way to get the physical idea of the part in your hands, for minimum expense.

This is even more obvious to see during the past 18-24 months, with investments of over £500,000 in plant and equipment spent, with commitments for another £300,000 in the upcoming months.

Crabb operates a 3-shift system, with an additional unit in Wrexham and possess over 30 machine tools: many with multi-axis capability. To that end, complexity and efficiency go hand-in-hand to produce manual and CNC turned & milled components to the highest standards and fine tolerances.

Specialising in Stainless Steel, they also offer heat-treatment, plating, anodising and polishing for

The quality does not stop with manufacturing, as the company is now using the KEYENCE® im8000 Optical Inspection Tool, complete with 360° rotating spindle for rapid and highly accurate measurements in seconds.

Crabb have been offering their customers in-house rapid prototypes for a few years now with the ONYX° 3D Printer from Mark Forged. Differing from many others in the market, this unit uses Carbon Fibre reinforced Nylon and produces surprisingly strong parts! So much so, that it has been used to run moderate quantities of production parts. Prototype parts can be shipped in matter of days,

Crabb were a new exhibitor at the recent Medical Technology Exhibition in Coventry during March, this year and saw a good number of enquiries, some showing real promise for new business.

In addition to all their production capabilities in house, they have long-standing partnerships with reliable subcontract suppliers, to enable them to offer painting, powder coating, fabrication, assemblies and much more.

Medovate Ltd and JEB Technologies Ltd combine strengths across the full medical device development pipeline

Medovate Ltd, an award-winning medical device development company and JEB Technologies Ltd, an established leader in end-to-end medical device design and manufacturing, have recently integrated their management and expertise to drive innovation in the dynamic medical device development industry. Medovate and JEB Technologies have combined their strengths across the full medical device development pipeline, from concept design, development and manufacturing, through to regulatory approvals and onward commercialisation.

said, “This is a significant step forward for the medical device industry in the UK’s eastern region, leveraging our organisations’ collective strengths and expertise, along with respective medical technology pipelines, to accelerate the development of innovative UK medical devices and launch them successfully around the world.

Medovate’s team working seamlessly with JEB Technologies will drive innovation development to positively impact healthcare globally.”

Medovate works collaboratively with clinical innovators and the NHS to bring new medical devices to market in the UK and internationally in order to improve patient safety and care. With a specialist-built company headquarters in Mildenhall incorporating a Class 8 cleanroom, JEB’s design, development and manufacturing capabilities include injection moulding, CNC machining, electronic assembly, in-house tooling, stamping, laser marking and welding, multi spindle turning and ultrasonic welding.

Following the two companies joining forces, Stuart Thomson, Vice President of Business Development,

The two company’s portfolios include SAFIRA® (SAFer Injection for Regional Anaesthesia), designed to revolutionise standard regional anaesthesia practice and promote patient safety. Typically, regional anaesthesia procedures require two operators, whereas the SAFIRA system enables a single operator to conduct the whole regional block process using either a foot pedal or a palm operator to control infusion and aspiration themselves, facilitating consistent, controlled delivery. With its built-in safety mechanism, the device stops injection at a specific threshold, reducing the chance of nerve injury.

Another novel device is CamPROBE, a safe, simple and cost effective transperineal prostate biopsy device. This consists of a stainless-steel cannula, an integrated coaxial needle and an adhesive attachment base. The needle is inserted at two entry points on either side of the perineum and CamPROBE is then advanced to the prostate area under ultrasound guidance and simultaneous local anaesthetic delivery. The integrated needle is then removed and the cannula can be used as an access sheath for biopsies. With only two body puncture points required, along with the simultaneous infusion of anaesthetic, the CamPROBE device reduces risks whilst providing patient comfort benefits during prostate biopsies.

Minimising Legionella risk in healthcare due to stagnant water with Global Water Solutions Flow Thru device

Legionella, the bacterium responsible for Legionnaires’ disease, thrives in stagnant water systems, posing a significant health risk in healthcare, residential, commercial, and industrial water systems. A common source of stagnant water is the Expansion Tank when incorrectly fitted to water supplies. Addressing this threat requires innovative solutions that prevent the conditions conducive to Legionella growth. One such solution is the Flow Thru device from Global Water Solutions, a technology specifically designed to enhance water circulation and reduce the risk of Legionella contamination.

1) Enhanced Water Circulation

At the core of the Flow Thru device’s effectiveness is its ability to maintain continuous water circulation within the system. Traditional water systems often suffer from dead zones or areas where water stagnates, creating an ideal environment for bacteria like Legionella to proliferate. By ensuring constant movement of water, the Flow Thru device disrupts

these potential breeding grounds, significantly reducing the likelihood of bacterial growth.

2) Prevention of Water Stagnation

Stagnant water is a primary factor contributing to Legionella growth. The Flow Thru device is designed to eliminate or minimise stagnation by promoting regular turnover of water in the system. This constant turnover is crucial in ensuring that the water temperature remains consistent, further inhibiting the conditions that allow Legionella to multiply. The device effectively forces water into the expansion tank, ensuring fresh cold water is regularly flushed into the tank.

3) Improved System Hygiene

Installing a Flow Thru device also contributes to overall system hygiene. By keeping the water in motion and preventing stagnation, the device helps to reduce the build-up of biofilm – a slimy layer that can harbour bacteria and protect them from disinfection efforts. The reduction in biofilm not only lowers the risk of Legionella but also improves

the efficiency of the entire water system, leading to cleaner water and reduced maintenance costs.

4) Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

The Flow Thru device operates without requiring additional energy input, making it a cost-effective solution for Legionella prevention. It integrates seamlessly with existing water systems, providing a passive method to improve water quality. By reducing the risk of Legionella, the device helps avoid the costly and disruptive consequences of an outbreak, such as system shutdowns and extensive cleaning.

5) Compliance with Health Regulations

As regulations around water system safety become increasingly stringent, the Flow Thru device provides a straightforward method to help ensure compliance. In the UK, this compliance is recommended by HSG274pt2. By mitigating the risk of Legionella, this technology supports adherence to health and safety standards, particularly in hospitals, hotels, and other public facilities where water safety is paramount.

In conclusion, the Flow Thru device from Global Water Solutions represents a proactive approach to minimising Legionella risk. Its ability to enhance water circulation, prevent stagnation, and improve overall system hygiene makes it a valuable tool in the fight against this dangerous bacterium, ensuring safer water systems and peace of mind.

Meet DRLC: Your one-stop shop for Authorising Engineer Services at Healthcare Estates 2024

DRLC Ltd will be at the Healthcare Estates from the 8th-9th October 2024 at Manchester Central on Stand B40. Director Louise Webb will also be giving a fascinating talk on ‘Technology and Innovation in Healthcare Ventilation.’ Healthcare Estates is the UK’s largest healthcare engineering and estates management professional show, attracting over 3,500 visitors and over 200 exhibitors.

DRLC supplies Authorising Engineers to healthcare providers around the country. The Chartered Engineers and Fire Safety Consultants have extensive expertise in their specialist fields across ventilation, water safety, pressure systems, medical gases and fire safety.

DRLC was established in 2016 by Managing Director: David Livingstone who has previous expertise as a Building Service Engineer in the NHS spanning thirty years. After seeing the devastating

impact of hospital-associated infections such as MRSA and C. difficile first-hand, David wanted to make a difference and set up his own consultancy company to ensure Operating Theatres had access to healthcare standard compliant ventilation (HTM03-01 standard) to help prevent such infections. With the support of Director Louise Webb, also his partner of nearly 40 years and children Melissa and Hamish Livingstone, the company has gone from strength-to-strength in supporting critical ventilation for staff and patient safety.

The last three months has been particularly fantastic for the Sheffield-based company: David gave a captivating talk at the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM) and DRLC is now proud to hold both the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accreditations.

From a starting point of critical ventilation services, DRLC has steadily moved into other services such as water safety and medical gas services as Louise outlines,

“We provide a one-stop-shop now rather than separate consultancy, which is hugely beneficial for the NHS, where 90% of our healthcare services are already based. This ensures a more streamlined service and single point of access.”

“Our robot, affectionately known as ‘Dotty the Duct Inspector’ was a great hit at the recent IHEEM Conference in Epsom, ensuring NHS Trusts can investigate hidden systems and provide clean air across healthcare buildings. Air flowing through ducting to wards and other clinical areas usually slows down as it reaches its destination. When this happens, dust is deposited in the duct which can then build up significantly over time, partially blocking the duct.”

DRLC will be at Healthcare Estates: 8th-9th October 2024, Manchester Central on Stand B40.

A revolutionary non-toxic solution for water treatment of HVAC closed loop systems

Introducing a revolutionary, eco-friendly solution for HVAC closed loop water treatment – one that’s changing the way we maintain and protect our heating and cooling systems.

Originally developed in North America and now available in the UK, this innovative approach, brought to you by GLWC, offers a sustainable and highly effective alternative to conventional treatments for water-based systems like boilers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, and piping networks.

These systems typically face four major challenges: pipe corrosion (rust), scaling, fouling, and bio-growth (bacteria). Traditional water treatments often fall short, addressing only one or two of these issues at a time, and often involve the use of harsh, toxic chemicals. GLWC’s pioneering products, CT-01™ and CT-02™, are designed to tackle all these problems simultaneously, providing a comprehensive solution that’s both safe and environmentally friendly.

What sets CT-01™ apart is its non-toxic, foodgrade formulation. Unlike conventional treatments that rely on corrosive chemicals, CT-01™ uses a

unique blend of advanced techniques to eliminate fouling and scaling from your system. It doesn’t just clean; it optimises system performance by smoothing out the interior surfaces of pipes and improving heat transfer efficiency. This results in significant energy savings – a critical benefit as even a small amount of scale build-up can increase energy consumption by up to 12%.

Beyond cleaning, CT-01™ offers long-term protection against corrosion. It achieves this by forming a self-limiting protective layer inside the pipes using nano-silica particles. This barrier helps prevent further corrosion, while the product’s pH buffers work to control the system’s alkalinity, virtually eliminating the risk of corrosion altogether. The result is a more durable system that requires less frequent maintenance, reducing both downtime and costs.

Another standout feature of CT-01™ is its ability to control bacterial growth in the system. Instead of simply adding biocides to kill bacteria, CT-01™ removes the deposits where bacteria thrive, effectively eliminating the source of the problem. This holistic approach not only leads to a cleaner

system but also ensures it operates at peak efficiency.

GLWC’s CT-01™ and CT-02™ products represent a significant advancement in HVAC water treatment. They provide an effective, eco-friendly alternative to the toxic chemicals commonly used in the industry, allowing you to protect your system, reduce energy costs, and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

With GLWC, you’re not just choosing a product – you’re choosing the future of HVAC water treatment. Let the Closed Loop Doctor safeguard your system and the environment.

Reduced DNAs, improved outcomes, better resource utilisation and less stress. What’s not to like?

Healthcare environments can be scary for service users, especially when they can’t communicate readily, and for clinical providers in today’s multicultural multilingual context, it’s tough to ensure full communication. Barriers to effective appointments can seem impossibly high.

Poor communication can mean missed or misunderstood symptoms, and poor diagnosis, with much appointment time consumed simply trying to understand each other instead of providing essential healthcare and potentially saving lives. It’s also frustrating for the healthcare professional and potentially damaging for the Trust.

It isn’t just you

Poor communication is just as frustrating for the patient, lost confidence increasing the likelihood of future appointment Did Not Attend that wastes valuable professional’s time, and leaves expensive

diagnostic kit standing idle. Critically, the patient outcome will almost certainly be poorer.

While telephone interpreting helps, it’s an unfriendly and off-putting format for both parties. More significantly, both interpreter and clinician are deprived of visual cues from the patient. Are they holding something back? Are they under duress from family? Are they too scared or embarrassed to be honest? Video interpreting’s limited visual interaction can help to spark better dialogue, but anyone who’s experienced remote meetings will know just how limited the format is. Those limitations are intensified in inherently-stressful care environments.

There’s a common misconception that the far more effective face-to-face (F2F) interpreting is too expensive, and that the only way to make healthcare provision for these groups affordable is to use remote systems. However, that overlooks the potential cost – financially, and to patient wellbeing – of DNAs and missed diagnoses.

The best option is generally a blend of remote and F2F, minimising cost while optimising communication. Our integrated provision of both formats helps you tailor cost-effective solutions, with continuity of interpreter helping ensure the best patient outcome.
