Eco Clipper FM4 Sport for sporting grounds

Eco Clipper offers large area mowers that help field managers minimise mowing costs while producing a professional cut.The Eco Clipper mowing system was originally developed to replace the cylinder mower in turfgrass production. The aim was to retain the cutting performance of a well-tuned cylinder mower, but not the high maintenance requirements and sensitivity to mowing conditions, such as wet grass and weeds.

The system

The smooth cutting decks with fast spinning small blades ensure a high quality of cut and a good distribution of clippings. Even in wet grass, the clippings are well distributed. This makes it possible to schedule this mower almost independently of the weather.

Thanks to the electrically driven blades, the mower is very economical and quiet. The large wheels and smart mower deck linking system ensure good contour following and enable high mowing speeds.

Municipalities and sports field and

park managers have also discovered the advantages of the Eco Clipper mowing system. For them, Eco Clipper offers the EC-FM4 Sport. This 4.11 m wide mower has four independent mowing decks. Its position in front of the tractor provides excellent visibility and comfort for the tractor driver.

The Benefits Users report high productivity gains, a factor two compared to 5-gang self-propelled cylinder mowers, and appreciate the low maintenance need and the ability to schedule the mowing even in less favourable mowing conditions, such as early morning dew and wet autumn.

The first company in the UK to have provided a King & Queen of England with crowd barriers

From Crowd Barriers to Police Met Barriers, Red Herring Event Services Ltd (Red Herring) provide a range of fencing solutions for any local to large-scale event or festival. With previous customers being MSV Donington Park, Leicester City Council, LPH Concerts & Events, Live Nation (Music) UK Ltd, The X Factor, Formula E Operations Ltd and many more, Red Herring is well-known in its field and is trusted as one of the best and most reliable fencing companies in the UK.

The company was established in December 2006 by Charles Herring who whilst working for a scaffold company during the years of 1985-2006, started doing events for Leicester City Council. He put on his first major event in 1989 for the council and because of this, his outstanding work did not go unnoticed.

Following a redundancy from the scaffold company (21 years’ service), Charles was offered to buy the fencing and barriers from the scaffold company to start his own venture. Taking them up on the offer, Charles took it upon himself to start his own business and in 2006 Red Herring Event Services Ltd was born.

The company has focused mainly on fencing and barriers, building a portfolio of products tailored to the customers requirements that guaranteed the short term, safe, efficient and cost-effective perimeter solutions they required. The company now stock a number of fencing solutions including Crowd Control Barriers 2.3m, Steel Shield Hoarding 2.1m, Temporary Fencing 3.5m, and Police Met Barriers 1.5m.

For large scale, prestigious events Police Met Barriers are the ideal solution to ensure all safety procedures are met. The galvanised steel barriers ensure the safety of the public as well as being a useful tool to guide them to their designated areas. Even though they are large and bulky, the Red Herring team are trained to carry out a fast and efficient assemble and disassemble of the barriers whilst keeping safety as the number one priority.

Of course, there is always people who try to climb the fences particularly at festivals. So to combat this issue, Red Herring can provide 3.5m x 2m Anti Climb Temporary Fencing that is made up of anti-climb modular mesh and has proven very popular at such events. Manufactured to the latest state-of-the-art technology, customers also have the choice of a number of different stabilisers to ensure the reliability and quality that they need.

Red Herring is based at Charles’ home office in Lincolnshire but the company operates all across the UK, “distance is no object. What we can offer over our competitors is that we provide a full service from the initial quote to the disassembling of the equipment after the event. We have a team of trained experts who will deliver, assemble and disassemble all equipment and are available as the client’s single point of contact throughout. We are able to offer a competitive price as our overheads are very minimal and one of the main benefits of our services is that unlike other companies who will need to hire the equipment they loan out, we own all of our equipment so this negates any waiting times and means we can deliver, assemble and disassemble everything for you in a quick, efficient and safe manner. We only use our own moffetts to load and unload artic lorries, and use them on site locations instead of using telehandlers. We are available 7 days a week, the event industry isn’t a 9 to

5 job anymore, work long hours and can handle multiple jobs a day,” stated Charles.

It is clear to see that Red Herring is a trusted company within the event sector and can be relied upon even for a last-minute job. In the future, the company will be looking to capitalise on the good weather and remain active across the events sector throughout the British Summer. There is scope to bring in 10.5km of fencing and 3.5km of crowd control barriers, that will also be very useful for large scale events.

If you’re looking for any fencing and barriers for your large- or small-scale event, please get in touch below for immediate service. We will go where the job needs to go, no job is too small.

Commitment To Excellence

Energy renewable company stays ahead of the curve for UK holiday sector solutions

specifically. We provide tailored services, such as solar panel installation, heat pump installation, and energy efficiency advice, that are designed to benefit park owners.”

Solar power is more affordable than ever for holiday park owners, with many advantages such as massively reducing carbon footprint and capping low energy prices, during the current energy price inflations. Solar panels operate silently, with no moving parts and can provide up to a phenomenal renewable energy source. The solar panels harness sunlight, not sunshine and can supplier energy for many years

With research from ABTA now showing that British holidaymakers prefer to holiday in the UK, over going abroad, this further demonstrates that the Lockdown staycation effect has remained.

Many families and couples choose to stay in holiday parks, with many on-site entertainment services keeping the kids happy, alongside proximity to nearby beaches and beautiful scenery. Not only are Brits holidaying more at home, they are also choosing to drive more electric cars.

Motoring Experts: DriveElecric are predicting a steep rise in electric car sales this year, after a supply issue in 2022. Latest estimates are looking at 448,000 BEV registrations during 2023. It is imperative then that holiday and residential park companies provide on-site EV charging station for guests. Holidaymakers are becoming more discerning about choosing locations and companies for holidays and those providing solar-powered sustainable energy solutions alongside EV charging stations, will be popular with those conscious of ethical, greener decisions.

Park Home Renewables has lots of exciting plans for 2023 as Paul shares,

“In 2023, our plans for Park Home Renewables are to continue expanding renewable energy systems on both park homes and holiday home sites, such as solar PV, battery storage, and air source heating, as well as energy efficient appliances. We will also look to develop energy

storage solutions to further maximise the use of renewable energy and reduce energy bills for our customers. In addition, we are in the process of developing a Park Home Renewables Network, which will provide information, resources, and support for park homes seeking to install renewable energy systems. Beyond 2023, we plan to continue to expand the availability of renewable energy systems and energy efficiency measures to park home and holiday sites, as well as provide more resources, support, and financing options.”

The dedicated team were delighted to be recognised for their Commitment to Excellence by Building & Construction Review as Paul commented,

carrying full accreditations with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), Renewable Energy Code of Conduct (RECC), Renewable Energy Code of Conduct (RECC), and The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS.), offering quality-assurance installation compliance.

From initial enquiry, consultation, quote, to full installation, Park Home Renewables looks after its customers across the UK from its dedicated sales office but what puts this company ahead of the competition is its specialist knowledge, as Paul outlines,

“Park Home Renewables services are unique because we specialise in renewable energy solutions for parks

“At Park Home Renewables, Commitment to Excellence means providing our customers with the highest quality products and services that are delivered in a timely, professional, and cost-effective manner. We strive to always exceed customer expectations and continually improve our processes and products to ensure we are providing the best possible service.”

Bluerun Ltd is a prime example of how adversity makes you stronger

Here at Building and Construction Review we are incredibly proud to present Bluerun Ltd with our Commitment to Timber Building Services Award for its incredible strength and resilience to endure the setbacks of the pandemic and continue its success over misfortune.

Joinery experts, Bluerun Ltd, was originally established in 1991 and is now run by the former Managing Directors daughter Dee Newman who took over the reins in December 2019.

When faced with the COVID-19 crisis, Bluerun Ltd had to undergo some changes and temporarily closed its doors to adhere to the Government guidelines and restrictions. It was a difficult time for the company, however, the mark of a resilient company - and the people behind it, is the belief that amongst adversity and to persevere in the face of current stress can only make you stronger.

Bluerun Ltd has done exactly that, and upon reopening its doors in May 2020 the company has gone from strength to strength. Work flow has increased, and its reliable, successful and trusted brand is now known as one of the best in the joinery industry. So much so, this triumphant comeback has attracted big name brands such as Starbucks and Waitrose who are current clients of the company.

2022 was a great year for the company in terms of revenue and new business. It has managed to maintain a strong conversion rate despite the current economic crisis and has found that enquiries for larger jobs as opposed to ‘single window’ types of jobs has been more popular

especially from domestic clients which mimics that of its regular commercial clients.

Based in Wimbish, near Saffron Walden in Essex, Bluerun manufactures quality, bespoke joinery items and everything is made to order, nothing is ‘off the shelf.’ Dee commented, “We manufacture items for the commercial market from door and window packers, to shopfronts, reception desks, mainframes, pub doors, and years ago we even made a trebuchet for Stansted Mountfitchet castle!”

Of course, the company has the capabilities to manufacture most things from timber, hardwood, softwood, panels and sheet material. Some common items Bluerun Ltd manufacture for the domestic building market include windows, doors (exterior and interior), bi-folding doors, staircases, bespoke storage units and wardrobes, all of which come with the option of being sprayed in primer or to a finish.

If you’re looking for items made from both hard and softwood or even veneered and painted panels, Bluerun can reproduce an array of items including replacement sashes, where it can manufacture a brand new one on a like for like basis, so the mouldings will match. “Similarly, if a domestic client has found an image of a door, for example, that they would like us to reproduce, we can usually do that. Recently we have started using a glass supplier that can supply us with stained glass effect units, complete with leading that has been aged and soldered, which looks absolutely breath-taking,” added Dee.

Bluerun only produce purpose made joinery to client's drawings and specifications. Its unrivalled

level of customer services means that free quotations are normally provided within 2-3 days or less, and the company can usually deliver a quick turnaround of any manufactured items required. And, because it has an experienced spray operative in charge of a modern spray paint and lacquer facility, articles can leave the factory in a fully finished state, ready for installation on site.

What really sets Bluerun apart is that since its establishment it has never used computer aided machinery for any designs. Crafted to perfection, all items are finished by hand, drawings are prepared with pencil and paper, and everything that is manufactured by the team has been done so with the utmost attention to detail. It also has the ability to obtain colour matches of any paint colours for clients that would prefer something sprayed to a finish.

Apart from needing the item to fit out its workshop doors upon completion, there is no limit to any project that Bluerun will endeavour to take on. Inspired by a challenge, Bluerun will

do its upmost to cater to all enquiries. “We can always find a solution. Staircases for example, would be made in a kit format, for ease of delivery and installation, and we use couriers for deliveries who have access to all sizes of vans and lorries,” said Dee.

Commitment To Excellence

Flagship residential surveying qualifications

In this issue of Building & Construction Review, we are proud to announce Sava as the recipient of our Commitment to Excellence Award for outstanding vocational qualifications across the residential housing market.

‘Home is where one starts from,’ the iconic writer T.S. Eliot once poignantly observed. It conjures up warm, fuzzy feelings of our foremost years- homemade baking, family dinners and conversations through to perhaps married life, children and hopefully, a blessed retirement. Home symbolises security, belonging, family; wrapped up in cosy bricks and mortar.

There are 29 million residential properties across the UK, with a staggering combined worth valued at over £7.4 trillion.

Homeowners face daily housing challenges, from logistical mortgage affordability and rising energy bills, to increasing flood/storm damage from climate change. Sava is in the business of making buildings better through education, technology and professional services to building owners, surveyors and the wider property markets.

Established in 1983, this dynamic company originally focussed on energy assessments and home condition surveying. Now with a diverse team of dedicated building engineers and physicists, software design developers, residential surveyors, statisticians, and business management specialists, the company is concerned with creating innovative products such as the Sava surveying diplomas.

We spoke to Hilary Grayson, Director of Surveying Services, to find out more about these pioneering qualifications:

“Unlike the traditional university degree route into the residential surveying profession, the creation of both the Sava Diploma in Residential Surveying and the Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation were driven by employer needs. Newly-qualified surveyors need particular skills and expertise to fulfil surveyor and valuer roles in established organisations. “These vocational qualifications are skills and competency-based,

providing learners with an engaging and flexible learning experience that tests their knowledge and, most importantly, how this can be applied to a real-life scenario.

“Our Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation in particular addresses the skills shortage within residential surveying and offers a new vocational way into the profession.”

The Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation allows Sava graduates to provide surveying and valuation services as soon as qualified, either independently or through a reputable surveying firm. Sava offers the only vocational route into the residential surveying profession that provides direct entry into the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), making it an unprecedented, flagship qualification. It offers learners, including those making a mid-life career change from the armed forces, teaching or estate agent backgrounds, a non-academic, vocational progression into a much-respected profession, as Hilary outlines further:

“Over the years, we have built close partnerships with employers, awarding bodies and professional bodies such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE), tailoring our products and services to the needs of the industry.

“For those who do not want or need the valuation aspect of the qualification, we also deliver a Diploma in Residential Surveying that maps against competencies for Associate membership with the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE). These learners can expect a future undertaking surveys that adhere to the Home Survey Standard, meaning that they can either work through an employer or work independently.”

Sava had the fortuitous foresight to introduce an online learning tool, Sava Learn, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, allowing for an easier transition towards remote learning. The Moodle cloud-based platform hosts a central hub, providing learners with online access to virtual classroom and learning resources, as Hilary elaborates:

“Today, our diplomas are delivered through blended face-to-face and virtual learning, providing learners with a level of flexibility while they study.

“Learners will be able to offer specialist advice on issues such as technical defects, low energy retrofit, and legal disputes, helping to ensure properties are safe and fit for habitation.

“Sava learners can qualify in as little as 24 months, graduating with an unparalleled breadth of knowledge and skills sought after by employers.

“We’ve received incredible buy-in from employers who value the calibre of graduates emerging from our programmes every year, and this is evidenced by the number of surveying firms who now exhibit at our annual careers fair.”

Hilary was delighted to receive our Commitment to Excellence Award:

“Commitment to Excellence is at the heart of everything we do – we are about going beyond to make our learner experience better and more engaging, improving outcomes and make them better surveyors at the end of the process.

“We believe education is a key solution for the property sector, ensuring the industry is armed with professionals who are experts in their field. Our residential surveyor training and online CPD modules are industry recognised, enabling our learners to provide specialist advice. This expertise is crucial to keeping the housing market safe and moving.”

Sava run regular briefing events across the country where you can find out more about life as a residential surveyor and the training options available.

Commitment To Excellence

From Grade I listed buildings to blue plaques: Unique architectural metalwork!

Building & Construction Review wants to showcase Leander Architectural; who have demonstrated Commitment to Excellence through its’ bespoke, expertly designed, architectural metalwork.

If you’ve ever glanced up at one of the many blue heritage plaques around the country, citing the fascinating relationship between famous writers, war poets or singers and buildings, there’s a high chance it was manufactured by skilled artisan: Leander Architectural. From Victorian bandstand refurbishments, topographical maps with braille to rural fingerpost signage, these first-class manufacturing standards are all hallmarks of Leander Architectural.

Leander Architectural are design & manufacturer extraordinaries of tailor-made structures, signage, bandstands, railway columns, gazebos, street furniture, wayfinding signs with a heritage restoration consultancy. The niche services offered are an eclectic mix, of blacksmithing, iron restoration, clay sculpting, decorative and structural iron, steel and non-ferrous fabrication, metal casting - for commercial trade and private customers alike.

The Royal Label Factory was established in 1874. Originally commissioned to manufacture labels for the gardens of Queen Victoria, it ultimately evolved into one of Great Britain’s foremost street signage manufacturers. Leander Architectural was established in 1986 and in 1998 the two businesses merged, bringing together a wealth of technical and historical expertise. From its foundry and workshops in Dove Holes, near Buxton, Derbyshire, the Company continues to offer outstanding contemporary and heritage metalwork solutions, using its trademark aluminium, steel, bronze and iron materials.

Though modern innovation has brought in waterjet cutting and computerised graphics, many of the traditional artisan crafts such as clay hand-carving are still skilfully utilised, adding timeless decorative finishing touches to both new build and restorative heritage work. We chatted to Managing Director, Gareth Roberts to find out more about this unique company,

“We specialise in bespoke metal work throughout the UK and further afield, having also completed projects across Europe and even the Caribbean. We are proud to say that all of our raw materials are 100% British, supporting our local and national economy. Our foundry uses recycled aluminium to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible.

Although we have an extensive portfolio of casting patterns and designs for bandstands, structures, columns and many other products, we are always happy to offer our expert, personalised consultation services for new ventures too.

We recently assisted with the repair of a busy Victorian era mainline railway station. The rivetted iron roof structure was still in tremendously good condition, but several of the cast iron columns were cracked and needed replacement, due to ground subsidence. Working with the primary rail civil engineering contractor, we were able to provide a “black box” design solution. The damaged cast iron columns were removed and the new ones installed

without removing the roof, whilst also complying with stringent construction standards. If you were to look up, you wouldn’t notice or detect the repairs: a sign of true architectural metalwork craftmanship, with modern and traditional materials blending seamlessly together. We were able to carry out the installation work, smoothly and efficiently, allowing the busy commuter station to carry-on ferrying passengers to work without significant disruption.”

One recent high-profile project that the Leander team undertook was the installation of new canopies at the luxury five-star Savill Court Hotel in Windsor. The work was carried out proceeding the prestigious meeting between the Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP and the EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen at the hotel, and is a source of great pride to the business

The artisan architectural metalwork is of such exceptional high-quality, that Leander Architectural often receive repeat custom from all over the country. The Derbyshirebased experts have been making cast signs for several prestigious organisations for many decades, demonstrating trusted, valued, skilled workmanship.

In 2020, Leander Architectural carried out the fine intricate metalwork and artefact restoration for the stunning Georgian-period Buxton Crescent Luxury Spa Hotel: a beautiful Grade I listed building. The extensive work included: replicating and rebuilding of the staircase balustrading in 8 stairwells, and delicate sympathetic adaption of handrails to modern standards. Restoration work always has to tread the fine line between restoring historical buildings to their former glory, whilst complying with current building regulations! For Leander Architectural there is no paradox: just the perfect opportunity for the skilled engineers to demonstrate their expertise.

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, the company did some quick-thinking as Gareth explains, “Lockdown was difficult for us, as it was for many manufacturing companies around the UK. Luckily, the team had access to laptops, so many staff were able to work remotely. Although most Civic Trusts and the like paused ordering blue plaques, we received orders from new, previously unexplored sectors. Many hospitality businesses took the opportunity to focus on refitting and refurbishment, which is where we came in. High-end bars, hotels and exclusive restaurants wanted bespoke interior decorative fittings or exterior gazebos and canopies.

We are steadily, organically growing, as many of our projects are technically challenging orders, requiring time and meticulous attention to detail. One recent high profile commission was for the manufacture and installation of decorative metalwork within the new ‘Sprague Terrace’

between the Sondheim and Gielgud Theatres in London’s West-End. Not only did this project need to look fantastic, but we also had to overcome significant design challenges to enable the metalwork to be transported through an operational luxury theatre.”

Leander Architectural has been investing in recruitment, safeguarding the future of the company through trainee apprentices and graduate employment. The company has recently taken on foundry apprentice and engineering graduates and is looking to take on more; helping to safeguard essential manufacturing skills.

Gareth was delighted to be acknowledged by Building & Facilities News for its steadfast Commitment to Excellence, “We want to exceed our customers’ expectations. For 99% of customers, appearance is everything: if it looks right, it is right. We have the historical pedigree to offer unparalleled expertise on a full-range of bespoke metalwork across contemporary architecture and heritage designs.”

Commitment To Health & Safety Award

Health and Safety company of the year

The high-flying construction hoist sales and hire specialist, Direct Hoist, has added to its success with the Building and Construction Review Commitment to Health and Safety Award.

Safety is top priority when working at heights. No matter how short the project or how few storeys are climbed, it’s vital to afford maximum protection for workers.

As modern building techniques call for more specialised products, health-and-safety regulations mean construction hoists have become essential for almost any site.

“Companies gain credibility for using the right safety equipment,” says Rob Wilson, founder of ever-expanding hoist hire and sales specialist Direct Hoist. Based in the Midlands and serving industry throughout Britain, Direct Hoist benefits from Rob’s 30-plus years’ experience of safety on site.

The award stems from a constant commitment to staff development and unrivalled attitude towards impeccable safety standards. And now Direct Hoist has rocketed to the top of the class, with its newly-launched programme of training courses already in high demand.

Direct Hoist, a midlands-based construction hoist sales and hire specialist, recently expanded its Lincolnshire site to include a bespoke teaching centre. And now, as a further step towards being a one-stop shop for its customers, Direct Hoist is offering tuition to help boost health and safety standards even further.

Rob Wilson, Direct Hoist’s managing director, is known for pre-empting a client’s requirements, thanks to 30-plus years in the hoist hire industry. He says, “We intuitively know what our customers need, so we’ve started running courses to ensure the highest levels of safety for our clients staff”

Direct Hoist’s training facility includes a 10m training tower, capable of transporting a two-tonne platform hoist to full height and all training is industry-specific with up-to-the-

minute knowledge of equipment, working practices and regulations.

Courses can be fully accredited to NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) Level 2 in hoist installation. Experienced students are offered a two-day session in the theory and practical elements of assembly and disassembly of various lifts. A week-long course is available for a more comprehensive understanding of erecting and dismantling different types of hoist.

At the end of each course, students are examined by an external assessor before they can receive a certificate, which will be recognised on most building sites.

Direct Hoist has more programmes on the horizon, including electrical safety and working at heights. So if your firm has any training goals, especially with health and safety at the forefront, Direct Hoist can certainly show you the ropes.

It’s not just training that’s keeping Direct Hoist ahead of competitors – and to ensure customers receive the best choice – Direct Hoist last year became UK distributor for Electroelsa, an Italian manufacturer of mast-climbing work platforms (MCWPs), transport platforms, material hoists and construction hoists.

Rob says, “Electroelsa is implementing a wide range of technological innovations, which we’re excited to introduce to the British construction industry.

“We’re currently supplying an Electroelsa 3x1.2m platform for a large development in Lincoln. We’re adapting the entire Electroelsa range for the rigours of the British rental market, where we’re enhancing components for longevity during intense usage – it’s vital to minimise downtime on-site, while maintaining efficiency, cost and ease of use.”

Direct Hoist and Electroelsa are perfect partners with them

also being a market-leader in safety, boasting an independent overspeed device (OSD) that intervenes by locking the platform if it descends at an excessive speed, along with an automatic safety system to protect the machine from being overloaded.

Electroelsa machines also benefit from high-tech computer control, including SIM technology with data-logging; it features a self-diagnostic function to remotely relate to Direct Hoist any problems, wherever it is in the world.

Dispelling common decking and cladding misconceptions

As a technical advisory service, the TDCA receives enquiries daily. But too often we get asked the same questions that are fundamental to both timber decking and cladding. We’re working hard to address them and provide resolution to common misconceptions by providing free resources on our website as well as on-hand guidance.

As well as our popular Timber Decking and Cladding Handbooks, the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section of our

website has a host of solutions to common issues – and if you can’t find the answers there then you can get in touch. Whenever we receive and deal with a new enquiry, if the subject is not already covered on our site, we create a new FAQ.

If you're after a particular fixing, coating or timber component look no further than our Supplier database of DeckMark and CladMark approved products and suppliers. Similarly, we have a growing number of approved installers too. In

addition to our bespoke sourcing service, we offer inspection and expert witness services if things have gone wrong with your decking or cladding project.

The Timber Decking and Cladding Association is a not-for-profit company and the money generated from membership fees and inspection services goes towards its work to raise awareness of fit-for-purpose materials and installation good practice.

Retrofitting windows and doors - warts and all!

George Barnsdale has announced the latest in its series of CPD webinars - "Retrofitting windows and doors - warts and all" which launches online on 17th November 2022 at 1pm.

Whilst we all recognise that retrofit is one of the keys to our drive for zero carbon in construction, it's not an easy option. Aside from the issue of VAT on such projects compared with zero on new buildings, there are often a few hidden nasties hidden away in the building's envelope.

The session will cover:

S Why there's never been a better time for Retrofit

S The principles of ESG - how large social landlords are leading the way

S A fresh look at the opportunities retrofit can create for us all

S A Developer's perspective - Julia WebbBuilding Surveying Director at Dorrington PLC talks about her own personal commitment to

retrofit in her role

S A warts and all look at the potential problems you can face when installing new windows and doors into old buildings with Stephen Wright, George Barnsdale

The UK’s leading wastewater monitoring and treatment experts

Initially developed by Smart Storm for the Thames Tideway project, The NeutraliZer™ is a unique, mobile, in-line treatment plant that uses only CO2 to continuously neutralise concrete washout water.

The concrete wash water issue

The pH of concrete wash water from construction and building sites is highly caustic (pH 12-14) and very damaging to the environment if untreated. It is illegal to discharge without an acceptable pH level (usually 6-9).

Equally, this applies to concrete wagon washouts to sewer and surface drains, where usually illegal to discharge below pH 6 and above pH 10.

This high alkaline wastewater is customarily treated with hazardous chemicals on a batch basis.

NeutraliZer™ CO2 concrete washout treatment

The NeutraliZer™ works by monitoring the caustic washout with Smart Storm’s USM pH meter and based on the readings, carbon dioxide (CO2) is automatically dissolved into the wash water flow to reduce the pH to a safe level for discharge; this happens on a continuous flow basis.

Smart Storm’s USI, a multiple water parameter meter, provides a 7” touch screen interface for user-friendly operation. A Magflow flow meter

monitors the effluent leaving the unit, which can treat up to 25m3 of wastewater per hour.

CO2 dissolved in water is slightly acidic so is ideal for neutralising concrete wash water and CO2 selfbuffers so cannot overdose no matter how much is injected.

Key features:

S Continuous processing system with advanced in-line mixer

S Skid-mounted and highly mobile – small footprint

S No need for hazardous chemicals or batch treatment

S Fully automated with alarm beacons (pH/out of gas)

S Rugged construction

S Plug and Go

S In-built storage for 8 gas bottles

S Integral flowmeter

S Remote Cloud-based monitoring.

Big moves ahead states Kelly Tanks

Kelly Tanks supplies innovative and cost-effective concrete washout and water treatment solutions to treat and recycle wet waste from construction. With a strong focus on simplicity and ease-of-use, Kelly Tanks is committed to developing solutions that solve real-life on-site problems.

Its well-established CWS Concrete Washout is the product of choice for washing off concrete wagons and equipment. Kelly Tanks also offers a range of Water Treatment tanks and systems for filtration and separation. Following the success and increased demand of its equipment, Kelly Tanks consistently releases new products each year to help ensure safe and compliant waste treatment on building sites across the UK and overseas.

This year has been an exciting year for Kelly Tanks, becoming the UK’s distributor for the most efficient drum washout system, DrumBlaster. Kelly Tanks Product Co-ordinator, Georgia explains, “DrumBlaster cleans the insides of your mixer drum on a daily basis, eliminating the need for you to climb inside and chip away at hardened concrete. By using several water jets located on the end of an extendable boom, the system reduces hardened build up”.

As the world makes its slow return to normality, post the COVID-19 pandemic, the reopening of trade shows is taking centre stage for many companies. Excited to see this return, Kelly Tanks will be exhibiting at the Contamination Expo on the 22nd and 23rd of September at the NEC, Birmingham, stand number 4-M20. Director, Kelly explained, “This year we are proud to be sponsors of the show and are looking forward to the opportunity to once again showcase our Concrete Washout and Water Treatment systems as well as our latest innovations in remote monitoring and renewable energy”.

The team at Kelly Tanks can’t wait to get back into the show environment and with big plans for this year’s show as the 2021 entrance and registration sponsors, you can expect to see their name at the door!

In terms of future plans, Kelly Tanks shows no signs of slowing down and is looking forward to continuing to grow their team, fleet and product range. Director, Mark confirms, “We only plan on expanding further. Look out because we are making big moves! We cannot wait to get stuck in and we hope that everyone has a fabulous first show back!”

New fixings added to the SWIFIX range

SWIFIX are delighted to announce the addition of a new fixing to their range, for securing cabling and trunking for satellite dish installation and small pipework, back to external wall insulation systems.

Sky originally approached Swifix after they had seen the newly developed Sky bracket fixing a few years previously. Since then, Sky’s engineering department (TPAS) and Swifix have worked in partnership to develop a fixing for securing cabling as they were dissatisfied with the existing solution. Two years in development, both the bracket and cable fixing have been rigorously

tested by Sky, with samples produced prior to full production. The new spiral cable connector is an innovative way of securing cabling back through EWI without affecting the integrity of the EWI system and protects guarantees and warranties.

As with all Swifix fixings, the spiral cable connector is suitable for all system finishes from textured and rough-cast/dashing and through all types of insulation types and thicknesses of 50 mm to 300 mm. As well as the bracket and cable connectors being approved by Sky, other fixings have NHBC approval, as well as being recommended

Products are manufactured in the UK using recycled materials and are available in black and white as standard; however bespoke colours are available to compliment the finished render if required.

The new spiral cable connector is available direct from Swifix.
