Doors, Windows & Joinery

Putting the craft in craftsmanship

In this issue, we’ve chosen to recommend Bluerun not only for its unbeatable capabilities of quality craftsmanship but also for its ability to manufacture bespoke joinery with unbelievable levels of quality and care without the use or aid of CAD or CNC.

For over three decades, Bluerun has been at the forefront of construction industry manufacturing quality, bespoke joinery to the domestic and commercial markets. The company was initially established by John Jones, who is the current MD and Peter Clayden, but when Peter resigned in 2008 John, his wife Doreen and son Jeremy took over as sole owners. As a family they each bring their own expertise to the team, and to enable John to semi-retire in December 2019 his daughter, Dee Newman joined the team as Finance Director to help oversee the day-to-day running of the company as well as manage the accounts, payroll, quotations and managerial duties.

Overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic showed the true mark of how resilient the company and the people behind it really is. Finding the strength to battle against the odds and to persevere in the face of current stress only made Bluerun stronger.

Today, Bluerun is thriving in the current market. Upon reopening its doors in May 2020 the company has gone from strength to strength. Work flow has increased, and its reliable, successful and trusted brand is now known as one of the best in the joinery industry. So much so, this triumphant comeback has attracted big name brands such as Starbucks and Waitrose who are current clients of the company.

2022 was a great year for the company in terms of revenue and new business. It has managed to maintain a strong conversion rate despite the current economic crisis and has found that enquiries for larger jobs as opposed to ‘single window’ types of jobs has been more popular especially from domestic clients mimicking that of its regular commercial clients.

Bluerun has the capabilities to manufacture most things from timber, hardwood, softwood, panels and sheet material. Some common items the company can manufacture for the domestic building market include windows, doors (exterior and interior), bi-folding doors, staircases, bespoke storage units and wardrobes, all of which come with the option of being sprayed in primer or to a finish.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for items made from both hard and softwood or even veneered and painted panels, Bluerun can reproduce an array of items including replacement sashes, where it can manufacture a brand new one on a like for like basis, so the mouldings will match.

“Similarly, if a domestic client has found an image of a door, for example, that they would like us to

reproduce, we can usually do that. Recently we have started using a glass supplier that can supply us with stained glass effect units, complete with leading that has been aged and soldered, which looks absolutely breath-taking,” added Dee.

As mentioned above, Bluerun is unique in its approach to manufacturing as it has never used computer aided machinery for any designs. Dee mentioned, “All our products are crafted to perfection and finished by hand. Drawings are prepared with pencil and paper and everything that is manufactured by our team has been done so with the utmost attention to detail. We also have the ability to obtain colour matches of any paint colours for clients that would prefer something sprayed to a finish.”

Only producing purpose made joinery to clients’ drawings and specifications, Bluerun’s unrivalled level of customer service means that free quotations are normally provided within 2-3 days or less enabling the company to usually deliver a quick turnaround of any manufactured items required. Furthermore, because it has an

experienced spray operative in charge of a modern spray paint and lacquer facility, articles can leave the factory in a fully finished state, ready for installation on site.

Aside from needing the item to fit out its workshop doors upon completion, there is no limit to any project that Bluerun will endeavour to take on. Inspired by a challenge, Bluerun will do its upmost to cater to all enquiries. “We can always find a solution. Staircases for example, would be made in a kit format, for ease of delivery and installation, and we use couriers for deliveries who have access to all sizes of vans and lorries,” said Dee.

Solutions for offsite: Passive & inter-module fire protection

For the offsite sector, the focus is not just on building efficiently, but also manufacturing safe and complaint buildings. To achieve this, it is important that offsite manufacturers and their suppliers collaborate at the earliest opportunity.

CPG Offsite Solutions, which encompasses seven brands – Nullifire, Illbruck, Tremco, Flowcrete, Dryvit, Nudura and Vandex – is an excellent example of how collaboration in practise has allowed us to develop specialist products for the offsite market. CPG Offsite Solutions offer a range of passive fire protection products for both service penetrations, and inter-module junctions.

Penetration Seals – In the event of a fire, the penetrations caused by services can undermine the integrity of a buildings fire safety precautions.

Nullifire’s FP220 Service Sleeve and Nullifire FP170 Intucollar Intumescent Pipe Collar are service penetration seals that expand when exposed to fire to maintain the fire resistance of a wall of floor.

Module Junctions – Offsite manufacturing inherently creates joints between modules or panels. Ensuring that adequate protection is installed within these areas is critical to the fire strategy of the building. Our tested and certified passive fire protection products for module junctions include Nullifire FJ203 Fire Resistant Rope, as well as Nullifire FJ400 Intuspan Intumescent Joint Filler.

We chatted to Managing Director, Gareth Roberts, to find out more about this unique company,

“We work throughout the UK as well as in Europe and the Caribbean. All of our raw materials are 100% British, supporting our local and national economy. Our foundry uses recycled aluminium to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible.

“Our extensive portfolio includes casting patterns and designs for bandstands, structures, columns and many other products, and we are always happy to offer our expert, personalised consultation services for new ventures too.

“We recently assisted with the repair of a busy Victorian era mainline railway station. The riveted iron roof structure was still in tremendously good condition, but several of the cast iron columns were cracked and needed replacement, due to ground subsidence. Working with the primary rail civil engineering contractor, we were able to provide a ‘black box’ design solution. The damaged cast iron columns were removed and

Another recent high-profile project that the Leander team undertook was the installation of new canopies at the luxury five-star Savill Court Hotel in Windsor. The work was carried out proceeding the prestigious meeting between the Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP and the EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen at the hotel, and is a source of great pride to the business.

In 2020, Leander Architectural carried out the fine intricate metalwork and artefact restoration for the stunning Georgian-period Buxton Crescent Luxury Spa Hotel: a beautiful Grade I listed building. The extensive work included: replicating and rebuilding of the staircase balustrading in 8 stairwells, and delicate sympathetic adaption of handrails to modern standards. Restoration work always has to tread the fine line between restoring historical buildings to their former glory, while complying with current building regulations! Ecobag launches coreless eco-friendly

One of the core values at the heart of the management team at Ecobag is to not follow, but instead to lead, and constantly strive to be at the forefront of industry and their latest product is no exception.

This month Ecobag are proud to launch their new coreless Eco TPS (temporary protective sheeting) range.

In isolation it could seem somewhat of an over-reaction to get excited over what is predominantly a basic LDPE general purpose sheeting, possessing modest aesthetic qualities yet totally fit for purpose, but the optimism comes from the sustainable attributes that has been introduced to the manufacturing process of the new product.

TPS

Through a rigorous sampling and inspection process at source, the highest quality post-consumer LDPE material is selected for manufacture. This gives Ecobag the ability to produce a product of great quality whilst maintaining it’s 100% recycled content.

Not being content with just producing a 100% recycled product, Ecobag looked to make this product even more sustainable by completely removing the cardboard core. They achieved this by investing in bespoke machinery at the manufacturing plant, allowing the product to be produced without the need of a cardboard inner. This will have a hugely positive environmental impact, reducing the cardboard content

of shipping container full of TPS from 2.64 metric tonnes to zero. Over a 12 month period based on current sales figures, this would save 158 metric tonnes of cardboard.

We now find ourselves in a world of constant excess and waste, so it must be acknowledged and applauded, that Ecobag are doing their bit to make a positive impact.

Centiel: Quality and innovation

Centiel was launched as a brand in the UK five years ago when the Swiss-based UPS manufacturer Centiel SA established Centiel UK in 2017. Passionate about innovation and quality, Centiel’s team of trusted advisors design, manufacture and deliver industryleading critical power protection solutions and Centiel UK has now successfully grown and become established as one of the UK’s leading UPS brands.

Centiel’s team are well known as pioneers within the UPS industry, originally developing and bringing to market the first three-phase transformerless UPS. Since then, the team have led the industry also developing the first true modular hot-swappable UPS configuration.

Centiel offers a full range of class-leading, energy efficient, power protection solutions. Its three-phase true modular UPS, CumulusPower known for its 99.9999999% (nine nines) availability has now been installed in data centres and comms rooms in over 100 countries across five continents.

More than 100MW of critical power loads are now protected with CumulusPower in locations across the world including throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.

However, what also sets the Centiel UK apart is the team’s reputation as highly experienced power protection specialists who act as ‘trusted advisors’ to a variety of customers in the data centre, medical, government and corporate sectors. Clients rely on the advice and expertise of Centiel’s team to design and provide solutions to maximise power availability, lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and future-proof the protection of critical loads.

Centiel doesn’t ‘sell’ UPS, it works with customers to identify critical power protection needs and then advises them on the best way to meet these needs. Louis McGarry, sales and marketing director, Centiel, explains, “When it comes to purchasing a UPS, it’s almost impossible to make a good decision based on a brochure or a website. It’s essential to engage and talk with the manufacturer to ensure the right needs are identified and met. Getting the correct advice and information means that

informed decisions can be made and that’s the focus of our team of trusted advisors – helping customers achieve the optimal power protection solution for their needs, whatever their situation.”

For this reason, Centiel’s team are located throughout the UK so customers can benefit from their expertise. “It costs nothing to have a full review of existing technology and to make the appropriate calculations to see where improvements can be made in terms of running costs or reducing expenditure on maintenance contracts or remedials for example. Our team offers clients access to the data and assists them to understand it so they can make objective and informed decisions to, for example, reduce TCO,” confirms McGarry.

“Because of our industry leading technology, backed by the unparalleled experience of our team, Centiel now occupies a unique position in the market. We are completely focused on providing outstanding support and service to our customers, and our UPS products made in Switzerland, stand out for their exceptional quality and reliability.

“The past five years have been exceptionally successful for us, despite the challenges of COVID and a war in Europe, and over the next five years we are looking forward to continuing this success and working with even more

customers across even more sectors, to supply bespoke solutions to help them reduce TCO and ensure their power protection needs are fully met both now and in the long term.”

As well as the company’s UK success, Centiel continues to expand globally. Centiel now has over 90 channel partners and nine subsidiaries across the world. Most recently, Centiel opened new offices in Dubai, the UAE, Qatar, and Egypt to support its expansion strategy in the Middle East.

www.centiel.co.uk

Achieving the highest possible level of power availability with Centiel’s CumulusPower™

Ensuring a continuous supply of clean power is vital in critical environments such as hospitals, data centres and commercial institutions. Even the shortest interruption could cause significant damage to equipment, financial losses or even endanger lives. An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system is used to provide power when the main source is interrupted or even fails, it also ensures a high level of power quality. Therefore, installing a UPS that offers the highest level of availability is of paramount importance.

Over the years, technological advances in architecture have increased the levels of availability that UPS systems offer.

The 4th Generation of true modular UPS CumulusPower designed and manufactured by CENTIEL now provides the highest level of availability on the market (9 nines). This means that the risk of downtime is reduced significantly. To put this into perspective, the 3rd generation of modular UPS and most commonly used architectures offer only 6 nines availability which represents seconds of downtime per year. CumulusPower has now reduced this to milliseconds.

CENTIEL’s true modular UPS CumulusPower also offers increased levels of flexibility enabling organisations to adopt a pay as you go approach and ensuring continuous rightsizing to minimise energy usage and running costs, reducing overall Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Uniquely, CumulusPower also offers safe-hotswap capability. This means a module being added to a system can be fully isolated and tested within a running frame before it accepts any load. It also mitigates the risk of human error to ensure the module exchange is completed safely. CumulusPower’s Distributed Active Redundant Architecture (DARA) makes the safe-hot-swap possible. Without it, any issue with a module going into a live system could have catastrophic consequences and the load could be lost.

CumulusPower also reduces TCO through high double conversion efficiency of >97.1%. As a result, CumulusPower provides the highest level of availability possible and is currently the safest, most reliable and flexible UPS available for critical power protection.

Recently, Centiel has confirmed the launch of its new single phase modular UPS solution. CumulusPower 11 is now set to revolutionise the single-phase modular UPS space by bringing all the functionality of Centiel’s three phase Distributed Active Redundant Architecture (DARA) into a single-phase modular UPS solution for the convenience of customers.

Facilities with single phase critical loads can now take advantage of the same high quality, high availability power protection previously only achieved with three phase UPS. Please see: www.centiel.co.uk for further information about our full range of Swiss quality UPS systems and maintenance options.

David Bond, Chairman

in UPS manufacture & supply Case Study Education is key: How Centiel can reduce total cost of UPS ownership

A typical example of a Centiel installation is the recent replacement of a legacy UPS system at an important educational establishment in London. The original UPS had been supplied around 20 years ago by another manufacturer and Centiel was brought in to replace the whole system with a more efficient, modern solution to support the IT infrastructure for students at the client’s campus. The old system also needed to be fully removed and the new three phase modular UPS installed during normal working hours with no disruption.

The legacy system, located in the campus building basement plant

room, was set up with two power streams. The A and B supplies were connected to two 250kVA standalone, monolithic UPS units in an N+N configuration. “However, the UPS was only running at around 43kW on each stream and therefore was inefficient due to the very low load. This, in combination with the age of the end of life equipment, meant the system was running with 25% losses,” explains Andrew Skelton, Operations Director, Centiel UK.

“Given the recent and dramatic increase in electricity costs, once the client was made aware of the issue, they were keen to address it. In addition to saving money, they also wanted to reduce their carbon footprint,” he confirms.

The facilities management group at the client’s campus had a long-standing relationship with the Centiel team, having successfully worked together on other sites on numerous previous occasions. They introduced Centiel as trusted advisors to come up with the right option to support the IT infrastructure and reduce running costs, particularly related to electricity usage.

Centiel’s CumulusPower was selected as it ensures ‘nine nines’ (99.9999999%) availability to effectively eliminate system downtime; it provides class leading 97.1% on-line efficiency to minimise running costs, in addition to true ‘hot swap’ modules for ease of maintenance and to eliminate human error in operation plus high-quality, long-life components to reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Centiel supplied two 100kVA modular UPS, one for each feed in an N+1 redundant configuration, within a 300kW frame for ease of future scalability if required. (N = the quantity of UPS required to support the load and ‘+1’ = the value associated to redundancy).

With the new system more correctly sized for the load, Centiel ran some calculations on cost savings for the client. Andrew Skelton confirms, “We took into consideration the cost of investment in the new UPS and the savings on original running costs which came in at just under £50k per annum and calculated the new system would ‘pay for itself’ in 1.63 years. Over five years, the total cost of ownership saving was just under £330K. CO2 reduction after five years would be 442 tonnes which equates to 727 trees.”

However, by selecting Centiel, the client did not just gain increased peace of mind by having a modern, reliable UPS solution in place which offered vastly improved efficiency, they also gained more space within their plant room. Also, Centiel was able to reuse existing site installation infrastructure, including cabling and battery racks, DC isolation and a battery monitoring system, to give the client further cost savings and minimise any unnecessary waste. The end-of-life batteries, however, needed to be replaced and were removed from site and recycled in accordance with the Hazardous Waste regulations.

Andrew Skelton continues, “The legacy UPS were huge! They were transformer-based monolithic units; each three metres wide. One of the challenges of the installation was fitting them in the lift so we could remove them! In comparison, the whole new CumulusPower UPS installed is only 850mm wide.

“At the start of the project, we worked to isolate the A system and fully remove this first. The load for that feed was put on bypass (raw mains) while the new A unit was fully tested & commissioned. This was left running in situ for two weeks to ensure it was working optimally and was happily supporting the load. Then, we returned and removed the UPS to the B feed while the new UPS on the A stream supported the load. The entire project took just under four weeks to complete, despite the two week gap, without any system downtime or disruption to the client.”

The new CumulusPower UPS now offers 100kW N+1 with 27 minutes battery autonomy which is more than enough time for the client to switch to its generators if there is a major power outage. Furthermore, if the client’s load ever increases beyond the existing 100kW N+1 capability of the UPS, the UPS capability can be quickly and easily increased in 50kW increments to 250kW N+1 meaning that the client will never outgrow their new UPS. To further increase the client’s power security, the UPS is supported by Centiel’s experienced team and a maintenance contract which offers two preventative maintenance visits per year and 24 hour

call out with a six hour response time.

“The client’s drive to utilise a more modern efficient UPS system, correctly sized for their load, has now been realised. They now have a highly reliable system which provides them with a near perfect ‘nine nines’ availability and is easy to maintain, effectively eliminating the risk of downtime. They will also make dramatic savings on running costs and will significantly reduce their carbon footprint,” adds Andrew Skelton.

Designer Contracts beat the clock

When Designer Contracts, the UK’s largest flooring contractor, embarked on a project which is helping transform a former Liverpool children’s home into a bustling urban village, supply issues threatened to de-rail the tight deadline for fitting hundreds of square metres of carpet tiles and safety flooring. But thanks to a lot of chasing, some lucky deliveries and a dedicated team of just two floor layers, the entire project – which included screeding of the ground floor tile areas and fitting 96 stair nosings – was completed in two-and-a-half weeks and came in bang on deadline.

From initial inspection to final sign off, the project at the former Fazakerley Cottage Homes, built in 1888, took Designer Contracts around five months after being commissioned to undertake the work by building contractor, Next Big Thing. The work was carried out between 31 October 2022, and 18 November 2022.

Now known as The Clocktower offices, it is part of a wider redevelopment scheme by Urban Splash to bring new life to an old site, transforming the historic building into one fit for commercial use.

From a development that once consisted of 24 cottages that were used as homes for children, The Clocktower now houses the NHS, Liverpool City Council, Fazakerley Special Needs and a private nursery the Clocktower. Redevelopment at the site is ongoing.

Bradite One Can’s Sister Act

It has already proved it can tackle almost any industrial surface, but now Bradite One Can has conquered the art world too, thanks to the skills of two awardwinning designers and muralists from Hampshire.

2SistersUK is run by Lauren and Chloe Piper, who burst onto the design scene several years ago with their vibrant brand of painted artwork and hand lettering. Based in Waterlooville, their client portfolio now includes clothing company Fat Face, Hilton Hotels, Dior and Boots.

The latest of these, a Mexican styled eatery called ‘Bonitas’ at Southsea, Portsmouth, wanted something wonderfully bright to add impact to their outdoor seating area. “They are a very trendy, ‘Instagrammable’ restaurant, so they wanted something for people to take selfies in front of and post online,” says Chloe.

The sisters were recommended Bradite One Can while searching for something that would work

on all surfaces and prove highly durable.

“We were blown away by the quality of Bradite paints and are really excited to find such a good quality paint that can be mixed to so many different colours,” Chloe explains.

“We paint artwork and murals for clients on so many different surfaces and in so many different colours, and we always have the headache of finding suitable paints that come in the correct colours. With Bradite we no longer have that problem! It’s super easy to use, flows nicely, and doesn't smell as strong as most exterior paints.” www.bradite.com

Eco Clipper FM4 for sporting grounds

Eco Clipper offers large area mowers that help field managers minimise mowing costs while producing a professional cut.

The Eco Clipper mowing system was originally developed to replace the cylinder mower in turfgrass production. The aim was to retain the cutting performance of a well-tuned cylinder mower, but not the high maintenance requirements and sensitivity to mowing conditions, such as wet grass and weeds.

The system

The smooth cutting decks with fast spinning small blades ensure a high quality of cut and a good distribution of clippings. Thanks to the electrically driven blades, the mower is very economical and quiet. The large wheels and smart mower deck linking system ensure good contour following and enable high mowing speeds.

Municipalities and sports field and park managers have also discovered the advantages of the Eco Clipper mowing system.
