CAPE Coaching & Development

Would you like to know the secret to having more time and less stress as a people manager? CAPE Coaching & Development can help you.

As people managers, we are our own worst enemy when it comes to having time to do our job! Our teams become overdependant on us because we often believe that the best way to help others is to fix their problems, provide solutions and give people the answer.

And the result – we become overwhelmed, spend our time ‘firefighting’ and we don’t have the time to focus on the work we really need to do.

Do you or someone in your team want to:

● Challenge yourself to be a better manager?

● Learn more about yourself and your impact on others?

● Feel more confident in your approach?

● Enjoy managing others more?

Swegon strengthens Waterloo range with enhanced product choice & digital tools

● Have the opportunity to develop your own style of management?

Swegon is bringing together all the group’s room unit brands of Waterloo, NACO and Air Diffusion under one brand identity ’Waterloo by Swegon’ to reflect its position as the UK’s largest manufacturer of air terminal devices.

Since the acquisition of Waterloo in 2020, the HVAC group have been working on full integration and settling the combined business into the new ‘Vantage Point’ factory in Kent. This is consistent with the Swegon group’s philosophy of investing in local manufacturing to service its key markets and strengthening well-known brands under the group umbrella while also bringing in expertise and innovations from across global operations.

Local product choice

The Waterloo by Swegon range will provide the product width, flexibility and choice that meets the specific needs of the UK market. To support this, there will be further investment in

technical innovation, sustainability, and digitalisation initiatives.

Daniel Jones, UK&I Room Unit Product Manager, said, “Our customers will have access to more great products, but with added benefits like Environmental Product Declarations, BIM and cloud selection tools designed to make their lives easier.”

Andrew Collard, UK&I Business Unit Director, added, “The new brand is an opportunity for our customers to benefit from our extensive technical expertise and the product selection flexibility afforded by such a wide range. The consolidation of Swegon’s room unit product portfolio is a natural fit and creates exciting opportunities for the business and our customers.”

Specialist Hygiene Company achieves Zero Waste to Landfill as sustainable initiatives take hold

Christeyns

Food Hygiene has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill for the last two years as it puts sustainability at the heart of company policy.

By working in partnership with ACM Environmental, the firm has achieved exceptional environmental performance with Zero Waste to Landfill in 2020, 2021 and on target for 2022.

Christeyns Food Hygiene, as part of Christeyns UK, has been working on a strategy for reducing waste and emissions and is part of a group initiative, Project Terra, focusing on the firm’s business in relation to sustainability and the environment.

Considerable budget has been invested in equipment and training to ensure facilities are as modern and efficient as possible. Installing low energy LED lighting across the whole site has reduced usage by up to 75%. Other initiatives include EV charging points, the recycling of all toner cartridges, improving biodiversity on-site, and monitoring resource usage to establish targets for reductions.

Raw materials are purchased from carefully selected suppliers, sustainability being a key requirement when choosing ingredients. The introduction of concentrated formulations has reduced the number of deliveries and hence carbon footprint.

Containers are washed and reused and washout water from both customer sites and the firm’s facilities is recovered and reused, reducing the amount of effluent being deposited into the environment.

The cost-of-living crisis is having a catastrophic effect on the financial and personal wellbeing for people across the country. The cost of living is spiralling out of control, to such an extent that people are having to choose between heating or eating, which is a devastating thought.

This is also having a severe impact on employers, who are already facing huge challenges in retaining and engaging people. A full, highly engaged workforce is critical to business success, yet with around 1.3 million job vacancies, many companies are understaffed, and morale is low. The impact of financial insecurity is creating pressure on employers to match pay rises with inflation, which isn’t sustainable, leaving companies in the perilous position of risking losing their people or stressing out their workforce.

Terryberry is providing an answer by offering a scheme whereby employers can help support their employees during these times. Its cost-effective benefits solution means you can give employees access to an easy-to-use discount platform, with average savings of £3,000. These deals are designed to reduce costs at checkout, help provide entertainment, and ensure access to necessary services for families, as well as supporting physical, mental and financial health.

Fast-tracking customs procedures with digital management solutions

Business and Industry Today acknowledges the importance of software solutions and Conex is our celebrated Company of the Month.

Conex was the first company to fully digitise customs declarations back in Lille, France in 1985 and since then this independent SME has grown to include two subsidiaries in both Belgium and the UK. Historically customs data entry inputting has been a laborious task and the inspiration behind Conex was that it wanted to offer registered customs representatives (RCR), freight forwarders and customs intermediaries an innovative fast-track digital solution.

After the full adoption of the Import Control System (ICS1) in 2021 for movements into the EU, ICS2 will now be implemented in a phased approach for movements into EU member states as an overhaul of the pre-arrival customs security system to mitigate against safety and security risk. The Customs Declaration Service (CDS) has also made its transition from CHIEF and Conex has been at the forefront of digital solutions to assist customers with these HMRC regulatory changes. With a full range of management software solutions covering CFSP, bonded warehouse, full and simplified imports and exports, intrastat and EMCS, Conex is well versed in customs procedures and regulations.

Paul Grobler Head of International Development explains how Conex has been at the forefront of digital innovation, “We wanted to save inputters valuable time so we designed an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system using artificial intelligence. This smart technology recognises data elements in any document from invoices to packing lists. After analysing and digitising, the system formats directly into the customs clearance system. This revolutionises the whole process by speeding up the inputting section with automatic extraction with secure entry and minimal error risk.”

The system was trialled and tested in France to delighted customers before becoming available on the UK market.

The mastery at Conex headquarters didn’t stop there with the Blockchainbased Zen solution providing customers with a ground-breaking, collaborative ‘single window,’ software model. The archiving model allows users along the supply chain to upload relevant documentation showing traceability on the journey to customs declaration.

The system allows for documentary, declarative and an information exchange flow seamlessly throughout the process. Input can be generated manually, by email or an electronic data interchange (EDI) from a system analysis program development. (SAP) Once the documents have been inputted electronically, there is a cluster formation in the customs procedure management. The data is collected in a dataset, amalgamated customs via Conex before pre-typing customs declaration. Once the declaration has been determined, the categories the documents into the Zen pouch.

Paul Grobler explains how this solution will improve the flow of information, “The data pipeline has become fully digitised through an easy connection of collaborative data sharing. An immutable ledger provides an anchor for timestamping, for ease and convenience of full commercial and legal compliance and audit trails.”

Bolloré Transport & Logistics was one of the first customers to use the Blockchain Zen system. As a major company operating in 109 countries, they chose the system based on Conex’s vast experience and reputation in the customs procedure management software industry. Jean-François Ledun from Bolloré explains how successful the system was, “We know, file by file, where we are at any given moment, thanks to a condensed overview; if data is missing to clear an entry, we see it immediately and can take care of it as a priority. As a registered customs representative and therefore a service provider, we must periodically provide reports to our customers. In some cases, it could take days to compile the information and present the renderings to the customer; with ZEN, creating reports is made easy, with preformatted templates.”

The Conex team will be exhibiting at the Multimodal Trade Show in June 2023 at the Birmingham NEC. To find out more about this innovative digital solution see the details below.

Battery Specialists Company of the Month

Any battery. Anywhere

In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are pleased to announce Ecobat Battery as our Battery Specialists Company of the Month.

Ecobat Battery came into existence in 2009 when parent company Ecobat, which has its headquarters in Texas, USA, comprises 27 companies and has 4,000 employees worldwide, acquired UK battery specialist, Manbat. The company is now the leading distributor of reliable energy storage solutions and accessories across the UK and Europe and strives to ensure its customers receive the most appropriate battery, or related support product, for their needs safely and efficiently, wherever and whenever they require it.

Ecobat Battery is not simply a ‘box shifter’ with its eye solely on volume distribution, rather its many in house battery experts use their decades of experience across a wide range of applications, from ‘simple’ car battery replacement to complex off-grid energy storage solutions, to ensure it delivers products that are fit for purpose and perform to the highest level.

Alongside its distribution abilities and applicable across all technologies from wet lead acid to lithium, another of Ecobat Battery’s attributes is the ability to provide a sustainable supply chain through sister companies within the Ecobat group, that specialise in the collection and recycling of these products.

Ecobat Battery’s European footprint, considerable

stockholding and wide range of products, including many prominent original equipment manufacturer brands, in unison with its logistics expertise, quite literally means delivery ‘anywhere’ of any size, from a complete container, to a packaged delivery of a single unit.

Via its 25 distribution centres, Ecobat Battery now annually distributes more than three million batteries and associated accessories from the world’s leading battery manufacturers, across many market sectors, including automotive, commercial, marine, industrial and specialist.

As battery technology has developed and prices have declined, in recent years energy storage projects within the UK and Europe have soared, with battery energy storage becoming part of smarter electricity grids for residential, commercial and industrial markets.

As the segment is experiencing such high demand, Ecobat Battery has responded by focusing considerable time and investment on the battery energy storage system (BESS) sector, and in 2022, became an authorised UK and European distributor for Pylontech, a dedicated battery energy storage system manufacturer, with all its production capacities concentrated on lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) technology.

Demonstrating its position as a proven BESS manufacturer, since 2013 Pylontech has delivered more than one million units and installed them in 80+ countries, and according to IHS Markit, based on capacity delivered to the market, is recognised as one of the two top residential battery brands in the UK and Europe.

Offering a high level of integration, Pylontech has its own cells and BMS, which is very important to ensure the highest product quality control. Features include unlimited capacity expansion, a wide working temperature range and a modular 19” rack system for various demands.

Pylontech products cover voltages from 12V to 1,500V, which enables partners such as Ecobat Battery to cater for many different sectors and respond quickly to market trends.

Now available across the entire business, this Pylontech

stockholding commitment, along with full technical back-up and support, provides Ecobat Battery customers with a complete service package, which enables them the scope to develop and grow within the BESS market.

In supporting future energy and material lifecycle needs for emerging battery systems, sister company Ecobat Solutions, has been highly active in the development of advanced technologies and processes for recycling and resource recovery for lithium-ion and other battery chemistries. It is the only European provider of fully integrated Stage 1-3 lithium battery recycling services and management services for Stage 4. I think we came out of it stronger than we could have reasonably expected.”

In terms of recent developments, Tony continued, “We’ve taken some time to review our business model, how we operate on a day-to-day basis. Being responsive to our customer’s needs and being able to offer a high-quality product with strong product knowledge at a competitive price with the best possible

The British Damage Management Association (BDMA) is a not-forprofit organisation offering individual and corporate memberships. The organisation was formed in 1999 and currently has over 2,700 members. The BDMA is the certifying body for damage management professionals, setting standards and providing training and accreditation for practitioners and others across the wider insurance sector. The organisation is committed to members and member companies promoting best practice and uniform service delivered in relation to restoration and repair, after damage occurring to residential and commercial properties.

The BDMA hosts a bi-annual conference to showcase the most up-to-date developments within the wider industry sector. The conference event welcomes a wide variety of manufacturers, insurers, and technicians from across the industry. The most recent BDMA Conference was held in June 2022 at the East Midlands

Conference Centre. The theme of the Conference, ‘The Roadmap to Sustainable Resilience’ remains highly topical – both in terms of geographical climate change but also in relation to personal mental health resilience.

Our headline speaker, Simon Reeve, excellently covered both aspects in his informative, interesting, and motivational opening keynote speech.

As we return to a ‘new normal’ after the pandemic, we are reminded once again of the equally significant issue of climate change. Ours is an industry that tackles two sides of the coin – we are the ones who respond to the damaging outcomes of extreme weather events caused

by environmental change, and we are the ones who must choose damage limitation and stabilisation methods that will allow us to protect our natural resources and environment into the future.

The BDMA has seen a change in attitude towards the way services are delivered – from remote monitoring, resilience, reduction of strip out, to a return to restoration – the market is moving towards more sustainable solutions. The BDMA will continue to focus on resilience, sustainable best practice, and in particular ‘build back better’ emphasised by the continued delivery of our accreditation training modules. Our industry is likely to grow in significance as extreme weather forces more flooding, more heatwaves and fires, and more extreme rainfall events. Kadant PAAL: High-performance, high quality channel balers

After a few years of absence, Kadant PAAL Limited had a successful return to the 2022 RWM and Let’s Recycle Live Exhibition at Birmingham NEC.

The RWM and Lets Recycle Live exhibitions, the UK’s leading event for waste, resource and sustainability professionals, was held at the NEC Birmingham in September. With over 12,000 visitors, 200 speakers and over 550 exhibitors, the event was bustling with activity and bursting with technologies aimed at creating more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions for industry.

After a few years of absence, Kadant PAAL, leading specialists in the design and manufacture of highperformance balers and ancillary

MODIFICATION & GROUND

equipment, returned to the RWM exhibition and had a productive two days on the show floor.

At the exhibition, Kadant Paal introduced its new technology: BALEiD by Paal.

‘Cradle to grave’ material traceability is a good thing. But, until now, bale identification and traceability has relied upon an inefficient, unreliable, manual process. The new, patented BALEiD by PAAL is set to revolutionise the industry.

A process that automatically and 100% securely attaches a label containing a unique RFID chip to each bale, BALEiD by PAAL suddenly opens up a world of opportunities. Watch this space for more information, as BALEiD is available for customers soon.

Polytag statement

following Government’s response to DRS consultation

Following the Government’s response to its second consultation ‘Introducing a Deposit Return Scheme in England, Wales and Northern Ireland’ on 20th January, Alice Rackley, CEO of Digital Deposit Return Scheme (DDRS) pioneers Polytag, issued the following statement:

“We are encouraged that the government is willing to consider a DDRS that can work in tandem with reverse vending machines (RVMs), but disappointed at some of the perceived shortcomings.

“Firstly, in response to support from both brands and consumers, it is pleasing the government is open to pursuing a different path from Scotland.

“That said, it is disappointing it suggests the technology

required to change the labelling of containers to facilitate a DDRS is not currently possible. Our partnership with Ocado Retail, in which we printed over 1.6 million unique-every-time QR codes onto the retailers’ milk bottles, proved the opposite.

“We were equally frustrated that

concerns over a digital model were raised regarding set-up and ongoing costs pertaining to increased fraud. Uniqueevery-time QR codes are in fact proven to reduce fraud and theft by preventing the multiple redemption of deposits by individual actors.

“In spite of this, we are confident that a DDRS will be included in the October 2025 roll out. It is clear consumers want to do the right thing when it comes to recycling, and a convenient digital model, that enables them to build on their current recycling habits and understanding of QR codes and smartphones is best placed to support them with their intentions.”

Common sense prevails for PyroCore’s medical waste solutions

Aplanning permission has been granted at Simonswood Industrial Park in West Lancashire for Culzean W2e Limited, despite an objection from 1,400 local residents. A dirty tactic campaign was carried out unsuccessfully to sway the planning committee, but ultimately the common sense prevailed with PyroCore and Culzean W2e limited presenting their state-ofthe-art facility, that will see infectious waste firmly destroyed in 1,100 degrees Celsius process, centred on pyrolysis.

The highly developed technology will allow energy generation and carbon to be captured in a safe efficient manner. The self-sustaining process achieves IED compliance in a relatively small footprint. This is a huge achievement, which will stop local hazardous waste to be transported across the UK. Building will begin in early 2024.

The PyroCore solution offers the end user a flexible waste to energy plant, that can be future proofed against any regulation changes. From

Japanese Knotweed Ltd launch new arm to their business

Last year, Japanese Knotweed Ltd launched a new arm to their business at the Contamination & Geotech Expo. This new brand – Environment Controls proved to be of great interest to a varied audience looking for information on how to control or completely eradicate Native and Non-Native invasive species and removal of asbestos contaminated soils. Some talked to us for over an hour and have since become clients or business partners.

Problematic invasions of land and aquatic weeds don’t just affect the construction industry but commercial businesses, utilities companies and private landowners too, and we know that amenity weed management is always an issue for Local Authorities.

Our specialist services that control or eradicate these issues were of particular interest because of our focus on biosecurity – the hot topic of 2022 and will continue to be this year. Invasive species are the biggest threat to biodiversity – bigger than climate change even, as controlling the spread is paramount to protecting the environment.

Machinery Attachments Company of the Month

Attachment experts bulldoze with extensive range of precision products APRD

Sustainability Today is delighted to award APRD Machinery Ltd with our Company of the Month award for leading attachments.

APRD Machinery Ltd is the only distributor for quality Wolf Technik attachments across Ireland and the UK and the only Irish distributor of OilQuick quick coupler systems. This family-ran business is based in County Kildare Ireland and supplies to landscaping, civil engineering, recycling, quarry and demolition companies, with its precise engineered attachment solutions. Managing Director, Gary O’ Shaughnessy, has over 20 years machinery and experience and we caught up with him recently.

“Our family have a farm, so since a young age, I have been taught how to repair agricultural and plant machinery. As Managing Director, I have thorough industrial knowledge of machinery, born out of previous work experience. I handle all the sales enquiries but companies know that I understand all the intricate workings of our attachments. APRD Machinery attends all the leading trade shows; we were at Hillhead

Water Management

and Bauma last year. Customers enjoy seeing live demonstrations of our products.”

At Hillhead 2022, APRD demonstrated its TSP 154 model to interested trade delegates, resulting in a huge demand for sales. The TerraStar® Screening Bucket line is hugely popular in Ireland and is growing in demand across the UK, as he explains further, “APRD Machinery was at a trade show last April and a sawmill business was interested in one of our screening buckets, after a 20-minute demonstration, we had completed the sale. The director was so desperate to start using the screening bucket, that we lent him our demonstration model until his order arrived! We want to help businesses flourish with productivity!”

The TerraStar® Screening Bucket range is hugely popular across construction sites and recycling settings, consisting of the TerraStar® Ecoline, TerraStar® Greenline, TerraStar® Compactline and TerraStar® Powerline. The full range has patented interchangeable

shaft couplings, to suit different materials. These models are perfect for screening topsoil, demolition waste, site won materials and also mixing soil for soil stabilization, these are suitable for excavators from 1.6t up to 70t and wheeled loaders from 1.8t up.

The TerraStar® Powerline is for heavy usage where productivity is a priority. It is a supreme powerhouse and can process a bucket of material in an incredible 30 seconds!

This model is suited to excavators from 20t upwards and wheel loaders from 9t up.

We asked Gary what made APRD Machinery attachments superior to their competitors, “The interchanging shafts allow for flexible working conditions across variable industries, giving companies greater productivity and more options than the competitors.

“The TerraStar® bucker Line is maintenance-free, with sealed lubricated bearings, no maintenance is required. “I haven’t had to repair one screening bucket so far; they essentially look after themselves.”

“We will be at the next Hillhead 2024 Expo at Hillhead Quarry in Buxton and all the leading 2023 trade shows, if companies want to see live demonstrations!”

With the continued drive towards recycling and a more sustainable future, APRD Machinery can offer attachments that will quickly enable industrial recycling, saving on expensive and unnecessary landfill costs and material costs.

With regards to OilQuick, Gary explains how companies benefit from their investment, drivers changing attachments in seconds without leaving the cab, means a machine driver is more productive, less down time, having a safer working environment while also minimising oil leaks. Also with investing in OilQuick, less machines are needed on-site as the machines with OilQuick always get more done.

New sustainable packaging from Bell for 2023

Following the successful introduction of presentation packaging made using polymers recovered from beaches and riverbanks, Bell are delighted to announce a new grade of PET presentation packaging, which contains 100% postconsumer waste.

The standard recycled content for our Retran® product is 70%. The move to 100% has been a challenge and by being more selective about the consumer waste and using good grade discarded bottles, sandwich and food containers we have achieved an excellent clarity solution.

The new polymer can be used to produce formings, presentation folding boxes as well as the world famous Retran® tubing, which is widely used to present hardware, DIY and sporting products.

Commenting on the development, Managing Director Peter Lennie stated, “Our design team have worked tirelessly through recent months to achieve a 100% recycled product. Rigorous testing has been carried out to ensure the product performs well in the market and we are delighted with the results. To differentiate the 100% from our standard product we have introduced a slight grey tint to the film which adds an attractive feature to the final presentation.”

STADLER shares its vision of the recycling industry and strategic priorities

As we continue to showcase companies who are leading the field in their industry, we are proud in this issue of Sustainability Today to have selected STADLER as the recipient of our Industry Excellence Award.

STADLER, the globally active German company specialised in the planning, production and assembly of turnkey recycling and sorting plants, begins the New Year ready to address the fast-growing demands of the recycling industry, which is evolving at an accelerating pace. The company’s strategic objectives for 2023 remain focused on anticipating the changing needs, developing solutions to address new requirements as they arise, consistently delivering added value for its customers.

“In 2022, the sense of urgency in addressing Climate Change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions has intensified to a new level,” explains Willi Stadler, CEO of the STADLER Group. “Greater environmental awareness is generating unprecedented pressure to reduce waste, recycle more, and move towards a closed-loop circular economy. We, at STADLER, believe we have the know-how and experience to support the recycling industry in addressing this challenge change with effective solutions.”

Meeting the changing demands of a growing recycling industry

A variety of factors, from public awareness about environmental issues to legislation such as the EU Green Deal, are driving the changes in the recycling industry. The European Commission has submitted a proposal for new regulations aiming at achieving three key objectives: preventing packaging waste, establishing high-quality recycling loops, and creating a wellfunctioning market for secondary raw materials through the requirement of a minimum recycled content for some types of plastic packaging. Another factor of change is China’s ban on imports of polluted plastics, which is contributing to the soaring demand for sorting and recycling plants in Europe – in particular plants capable of sorting plastics into the different polymers.

The recycling industry is consequently growing fast and requiring an increasing degree of specialisation. STADLER is at the forefront of this evolution, detecting new requirements and providing solutions. Two

projects completed in 2022 are a perfect illustration of how the company is constantly breaking new ground: the first and most advanced fully automatic light packaging sorting plant in Eitting, Germany, and Europe’s first fully automatic textile sorting plant in Malmö, Sweden.

The pursuit of minimising waste by recycling as much as possible has also put the spotlight on chemical recycling. In 2022, it capitalised the attention of the chemical and mineral oil industries looking for effective solutions for plastics that are difficult to recycle. “At STADLER, we detected this emerging demand early on, and today we offer upstream equipment that sorts and prepares the plastics for the chemical process,” says Willi Stadler. “This is an important step forward, as chemical recycling companies break down the plastic into gas, convert it into oil, which is then transformed into virgin plastic. This means closing the loop of a circular economy for materials that until recently would have been discarded as waste.”

STADLER is constantly searching for new ways of supporting the recycling industry in its evolution. This includes participation in research initiatives such as the EnEWA project, which aims to unlock the untapped potential of obtaining recyclable paper from residual, commercial and plastic waste, for which it received the European Paper Recycling Council Award 2021/22 in the ‘Innovative Technologies and Research & Development’ category. Digitalization plays an increasingly significant role and STADLER is fully on board, as Willi Stadler explains, “This is a priority for STADLER, in all areas of our business – in our operations and, most importantly, in the sorting plants,

we design with data collection of incoming and outgoing recyclables and predictive maintenance. We will continue to invest significantly in this area.”

Meet an increasingly global demand for recycling plants

The demand for recycling is spreading across the world, and STADLER has expanded its activities in Latin America and in the United States to meet this need. In 2022, it completed the latest in a series of MSW sorting facilities in Brazil. The company also opened a new sales and service office in Mexico City, where it has already built a number of plants, including two large-scale facilities. Its subsidiary in the United States had a breakthrough in 2022 and is now supplying systems across the country. STADLER is investing in increasing its capacity at its production facilities in Germany and Slovenia in order to meet the growing demands of its historical and new markets.

Sustainability is in STADLER’s DNA

“STADLER is all about sustainability, starting from our very business model: as a specialist in waste sorting systems for the waste disposal and recycling industry, we provide an important infrastructure for the development of a circular economy. Effective waste sorting is the basic prerequisite for efficient recycling,” says Willi Stadler. “What’s more, with every recyclable material sorting plant we build, thousands of tons of CO2 are saved. Just to give an example, a household waste sorting plant that treats 100,000 tons of input material per year saves about 100,000 tons of CO2 equivalents.” In 2022, STADLER’s achievements in sustainability have been recognised with the Sustainability Today Industry Excellence Award.

STADLER is also focused on sustainability in its operations: “We are a mediumsized family business with 230 years of history, and we have been acting sustainably on our own initiative. As a member of the UN Global Compact, we are committed to sustainability and to the ten principles of sustainable business for the benefit of all people, today and in the future.” The company has adopted a modern energy management concept and is currently focusing on energy saving and self-sufficiency. For example, in 2023 it plans to extend its 88kWp photovoltaic system with an additional 750kWp.

The company’s sustainability extends to corporate governance and financial sustainability. It reinvests annual surpluses and ensures a high equity ratio, so that it is able to overcome economically unfavorable situations and protect its partnerships with customers, employees, suppliers and the local community. “Through our sustainable approach, we create an environment that fosters a high sense of purpose in our employees, who feel invested in the company,” says Willi Stadler. “At the same time, we are able to support our business partners in difficult times such as we are experiencing.”

Air Quality Services Company of the Month

Sustainability Today would like to award Air Spectrum Environmental with our Company of the Month Award for expertise in the air quality related services.

This UK family-based company was founded over 25 years ago and has continued to offer expert air quality services around the UK and abroad. Air Spectrum Environmental supplies to a wide variety of sectors from construction and demolition, mining, wastewater to agriculture. We caught up with Charlotte Walters, Marketing Manager to find out more, “We provide air quality products and services: dust management, odour control, air quality monitoring and consultancy, are all within our remit. We continue to strive to provide cost-effective, green air quality solutions to industry sectors. Our priorities include carbon neutrality and being a green supplier.”

The company is the first in the industry to offer innovative battery-powered mobile dust suppression, with the application of misted water to control clouding dust. Whilst mobile dust suppression is nothing new, the equipment is usually diesel powered. Air Spectrum created ‘ecotech’- their range of battery-powered equipment to fulfil requirements on-site for a loweremission alternative.

The ‘ecotech Rotary Atomiser,’ was proudly exhibited at Hillhead Expo 2022 and RWM & Letsrecycle Live: demonstrating its prowess to interested trade delegates. The atomiser can be battery operated for eight hours, following one charge, offering optimal energy efficiency. The rear vortex fan can channel mist from 15m to 20m, for misting purposes and can be used for odour control, dust suppression, cooling and disinfection control. The Rotary Atomiser range can be hired or purchased and can be operated as a mobile unit or fixed installation, and powered by mains supply, ecotech battery or a diesel generator. With zero emissions in the ecotech range, this exemplifies Air Spectrum Environmental’s commitment to superior sustainable solutions.

Dust is a burgeoning risk across the construction and demolition industry in particular and products like the Rotary Atomiser, Dust Cannons and Jetstreams are ideal for dust suppression, as Charlotte elaborates, “The importance of maintaining good air quality can't be understated, we’d like to highlight the importance of protecting those working and visiting site by taking

action to firstly monitor the air both indoors and outdoors and put measures in place to prevent harm if levels of damaging elements such as dust, are too high. We are further expanding our dust suppression range over the coming year.”

The dust cannons can project water up to 50m, ideal for larger exterior applications, whereas the mini mister range is the perfect choice for interior applications up to 10m.

Air Spectrum Environmental is based in Worcester, West Midlands with engineered precision-capacity to supply all over the UK. The company can offer tailor-made solutions to all major industries, from initial assessment to expert monitoring of the bespoke solution. Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning

Every commercial organisation requires hot water and for many, it is a business-critical service.

From hospitals to hotels, schools, universities, restaurants, leisure centres, shops, and offices, the range of property types and usage means the demands for hot water are many and varied. As such, the provision of hot water is complex, potentially more expensive and can be extremely energy intensive - accounting for as much as 30% of a building’s daily energy demands – which makes addressing its sustainability both important and challenging.

Most existing commercial facilities will typically run successfully on a system based around gas-fired water heaters, which, despite being highly efficient and cost-effective are not sustainable. This is why for more recent construction projects the preference has been to move to electric water heating to take advantage of increasingly less ‘dirty’ grid energy. For those wanting to achieve net zero in existing buildings there are two options, electrify all equipment on the basis that the electricity grid will become zero carbon, or change natural gas to a carbon-free gas such as Hydrogen.

The application of hydrogen still has a large question mark over it. At Adveco, we accept it has an important

role to play and is likely the easiest and most costeffective way to quickly bring sustainability to existing gas-grid-connected commercial sites that have high demands for energy or hot water. If you have a gas connection, the advice is not to remove it as it leaves an alternative path for future-proofing some or all of an organisation’s energy demands.

Today, electrifying all equipment is the most likely option, but it does have implications for running costs, as electric tariffs are on average 3.8 times more costly than gas. For example, a 150-bed hotel changing from gas to direct electric will reduce carbon emissions by 42% but the yearly hot water running costs could increase from an average of £6,500 to £25,000.

Unlike space heating, which is influenced greatly by the building fabric and especially insulation, water-heating applications are year-round systems that can immediately benefit from the addition of renewables and are one of the best ways of making active carbon savings today, and if planned properly can help offset the costs of direct electric water heating.

Deploying either heat pumps or solar thermal as a renewable to provision the hot water system’s initial preheat is the most logical approach. This allows for either reducing or eventually removing the need for gas afterheat in older properties reducing energy demand and emissions. Those sites on grid electricity also gain further carbon savings, reduced running costs and, if system demand is great, can help pass Part L during building works for new projects or large scale refurbishments.

Both heat pumps and solar thermal technologies offer a low maintenance way of achieving reduced emissions

targets, with solar thermal, which is essentially free to operate, also helping to control operational costs by offsetting the need for electrical top-up water heating. This variety of options for domestic hot water (DHW) systems in commercial properties is also increasing their complexity. That leads to more chances of systems becoming oversized due to a poor understanding of needs and concerns over ensuring system redundancy. We see this when gas is switched to like-for-like sized electric alternatives. This would result in higher, unnecessary capital expenditure and operational costs for the life of the system, potentially counteracting the efforts to introduce sustainability. To avoid issues of poor sizing, and incumbent costs, a thorough understanding of a property’s daily hot water peak and general demands is a necessary starting point for any sustainability project that is going to address hot water emissions.

WWEM offers a technical program aimed at keeping you up to date with the latest trends, regulations, methods, techniques and technologies and

environmental managers, control and instrument users and planners from across all industries who test, analyse, monitor or treat water and wastewater.

TBM and THT are the most commonly used odorants to make odourless natural gas smell, so that people realise there is a gas leak. However, control of these odorants is necessary to maintain their effectiveness. Sensorix offers electrochemical (EC) gas sensors for mercaptan and THT detection –Sensorix TBM 50 and Sensorix THT 100 low H2.

Due to various power to gas initiatives, more and more H2 will be added to natural gas. For this reason, a gas measurement device with high-performance gas sensors and no H2 interference is required. We are very pleased to confirm that the Sensorix TBM 50 is already suited for this application. To complete our respective range of sensors, we have developed the Sensorix THT 100 low

H2, so we now offer a perfect solution for the detection of mercaptans and THT in natural gas with added H2.

The Sensorix TBM 50 detects mercaptans with zero cross sensitivity towards H2, CO, H2S, THT and is ready for use in H2 containing natural gas (‘power to gas’). Its performance is demonstrated by the following characteristics:

W The Sensorix TBM 50 gas sensor has excellent repeatability (standard deviation of sensitivity

= 0.5% for 10 consecutive measurements at 10mg/m³ TBM);

W It shows excellent baseline stability from -10 to 40°C and in changing humidity (<0.1mg/m³);

W Finally, its unbiased operation will increase battery life in your portable instrument.

Environmentally friendly underwater equipment to enhance inspection capabilities

In this issue of Sustainability Today, we are pleased to announce Atlantas Marine as our Underwater Inspection Equipment and Services Company of the Month.

“‘Clarity at Depth’ neatly sums up our aim to deliver clear and unambiguous images of the client’s subsea assets,” stated Charlie Foll, Founder of Atlantas Marine. It has been a tremendous journey of growth for the company Atlantas Marine that was started by Charlie Foll in November 2000 from his home. “I started working from a spare bedroom at home with the help of an old-style mobile phone and a fax machine. The original business idea was to resell marine products and I was fortunate to make contact with US manufacturer VideoRay, who had just started the year before,” he said.

“As well as providing ROV’s globally, we also provide sales and rental services, excellent technical support and training courses for new users, and we also develop and manufacture our own brand of underwater equipment to enhance inspection capabilities,” added Charlie. Offering some of the world’s most comprehensive and sought-after subsea offshore inspection services and equipment, its current portfolio includes VideoRay ROV Systems, Subsea Positioning equipment, Sonars, Manipulators, CP Measurement (Cyclone CP), Cameras, and Ocean Modules ROV Systems. These particular products are specialised towards those involved in the Offshore Wind, Offshore Oil and Gas, Defence and Nuclear sectors, however, Atlantas Marine also cater to other markets and applications too.

environmental responsibility seriously. Whilst maintaining an Environmental Management System (EMS) as part of its business management systems in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14001, considerations of all environment issues will be taken into account when carrying out any work. From conducting regular management reviews of its environmental performances to providing continual training, and involving all employees in its environmental improvement programs, Atlantas Marine is proud of its sustainable work practice.

company has outgrown its current offices where it has been based since 2015, and will be moving into brand new purpose-built offices in February 2023. The new offices will still be based in Yeovil, Somerset but will offer larger storage and workshop facilities to support future growth. “As well as the exciting news of moving into a larger premises, we have recently recruited new sales and engineering staff too. We have welcomed Chris to the sales team, Jimmy to engineering and Scott to the operations team. We are excited for the future and will continue to develop our markets and build our team,” said Charlie.

Today, VideoRay continues to lead the worldwide market in producing small electric ROV’s, and during January 2023, Atlantas will have sold their 330th VideoRay ROV. As specialists in underwater inspection using unmanned submersibles, these underwater vehicles known as ROV’s can be transported anywhere around the world on most standard airlines. They have become incredibly useful in carrying out underwater inspections without the need for human divers, and are used by a range of world-renowned key organisations such as The Royal Navy, Chevron and EDF Energy. In fact, because Atlantas Marine operates on a worldwide scale, all of its subsea inspection equipment can also easily be delivered by standard airfreight.

“During 2022, we were working on five continents simultaneously. We use very high-quality cameras, sonars, inspection techniques and ROV’s to deliver excellent survey reports,” said Charlie. Atlantas Marine has been working in offshore renewables since 2014 enabling it to experience and take on valuable learnings of sound working knowledge of inspecting offshore windfarm assets. With notable clients including Siemens, Centrica, and The Royal Navy, Atlantas Marine is also experienced in other inspection projects for a variety of markets including CVIs (close visual inspections) of boat landings, subsea cable inspections, underwater seal inspections, scour surveys using SONAR and a HD camera to measure seabed scour, anode surveys using general visual inspection (GVI) and CVI, rock dumping, CP (cathodic protection) measurement, and much more. As an independent company, Atlantas Marine take its

Alongside its comprehensive range of equipment, Atlantas Marine offer a number of courses that cover the operation and maintenance of its Ocean Modules or VideoRay ROVS. There are three VideoRay training courses; Basic Operator Course, Advanced Maintenance Course, and Mission Specialist Course. Taking place over one or two days on-site at either Vobster Quay, Somerset or at the company HQ in Yeovil, Somerset, each course will help you to learn in-depth all things ROV, its capabilities, maintenance and tips. These courses are designed to suit all levels of both new and existing users. The Mission specialist course is a fantastic course for anyone who is already a VideoRay Mission Specialist DEFENDER and Pro 5 customer. Leading the way in recyclable pump technology

The first Quantex pump was invented by Quantex Founder, Dr Paul Pankhurst, to create a less expensive, more accurate alternative to a peristaltic pump. Several years of R&D and customer collaborations, led to the successful development of several off-the-shelf, recyclable pumps with varying flow-rate ranges. In June 2021, Quantex was acquired by PSG, an operating company of Dover Corporation and now sits alongside 13 other pump and flow measurement brands.

Since the acquisition, Quantex has moved its headquarters to Duisburg, Germany where it benefits from the established resources and clean room facilities already in place for other PSG brands: Quattroflow, Almatec, and Hydro. Quantex’s London office and dedicated manufacturing plant in High Wycombe are still in operation.

“Quantex is the leading provider of recyclable pump technology, where, instead of the pump being a part

of the fixed equipment, it is attached directly to the liquid packaging –similar to the way a tap is already connected to a bag in box of wine. But instead of pressing the tap and allowing liquid to dribble out using gravity, the pump is clipped into a motor drive in the fixed equipment, and the product is dispensed accurately, at a range of precision flow rates suitable for all kinds of liquids. When the product supply is finished, you simply replace the bag and pump with a new bag and pump,” stated Gillian Harding-Moore, Director – Marketing.

Quantex’s system is extremely hygienic and requires no costly cleaning or maintenance. The Quantex pumps also maintain vacuum capability which equips them with the ability to handle high viscosities such as mayonnaise, hair conditioner, or glue, and can evacuate the bag by 98%.

“The pumps can also reverse cycle which is widely used for cleaning the nozzle at the end of each dispense by sucking the product back into the pump. Another very exciting capability is its in-pump dilution option, where it can pump high-ratio concentrates, and accurately mix them with water at the point of dispense. This takes water out of the distribution channel, saving the customer both money and carbon emissions from shipping their products around the world,” added Gillian.

With the drive to save single-use plastic waste, the wealth of benefits of using Quantex pumps has been recognised by UK and European supermarkets, who have been attempting to trial refill stations, where consumers bring their reusable bottles to refill in stores instead of using single use pre-packaged goods. Dispensing liquids has been proving to be too expensive and labour intensive for shop-floor staff.

“Quantex technology provides the key enabler for scaling up refill in supermarkets, with a low maintenance, low cost and flexible solution that can be standardised for dispensing virtually any fluid. Quantex is working with several refill equipment manufacturers, who are

designing their next generation of dispensers around the Quantex system.” Gillian continued, “Several global brands and retailers are excited by the early prototypes that allows product replenishment to be 75% faster, with no cleaning or maintenance, and no drips that cause dangerous slip hazards in supermarket isles. The aim is to provide a better refill experience for consumers and therefore, encourage more refill adoption. The first machines are planned to be in European supermarket trials in 2023. It is an exciting market to be in, as it is just the beginning of a big change to the way we shop, and Quantex is sitting at the heart of the movement.”

As the company looks ahead, in addition to Refill, Quantex is moving into the Biopharma market, and aligning with other Dover brands; Quattroflow®, em-tec, Malema®, and CPC®. Gillian added, “The alignment will strengthen our PSG offering, providing pumps, flow measurement solutions and connectors that serve cell and gene therapy and bioprocessing needs from early process development through to upstream and downstream applications.”

One-stop shop for collaborative applications

The Challenge

As a high-mix low-volume manufacturer, SANMATSU, quick to perceive the public’s growing need for HMLV production, came up with an original business model of small-lot contract manufacturing. The company is serious about an approach that’s ‘completely build to order, one item at a time.’

‘Completely build to order, one item at a time,’ is an effective way to create a ‘strong SME’ without sacrificing cost competitiveness.

But fulfilling customer needs one product at a time, each with a different size, shape, and function, means the production setup has to be swapped more often. Streamlining production and cutting manufacturing costs thus requires big moves.

To streamline cutting processes, SANMATSU switched out two machine tools for one advanced machining center (MC).

The MC takes 5 to 10 minutes to fabricate one part. That means every 5 to 10 minutes, parts are switched out by extracting the fabricated part and setting a new one. While the MC operates, a person must remain on hand just to switch out parts.

Business

Mr. Tanabe thought, “We need to innovate to take advantage of the MC's high performance while cutting labor hours. Let’s use automated machine tending with collaborative applications that supply and extracts parts at the MC and machine tools.”

Could a collaborative gripper and collaborative application automate an HMLV setting?

Solution: RG6 Dual Gripper

The solution is the use of the OnRobot’s collaborative applications solution with their RG6 Dual Gripper that works smoothly with a cobot. This allows safe movement around humans, and it also lowers initial investment because it does not require a safety fence.

With a 160mm max stroke and 6kg load capacity, the OnRobot RG6 Dual Gripper can handle diverse parts of different sizes and weights. And since it can extract and set parts simultaneously with its two grippers, the RG6 makes a big impact by swapping out parts faster and lowering MC wait times.

Using OnRobot’s collaborative applications and grippers on the end of a robotic arm offers a production site great flexibility and adaptability, thereby making a major contribution to automated HMLV production.

The benefits of using RG6 Dual gripper

Mr. Tanabe said, “We didn’t have to keep somebody at the MC all the time anymore. It also reduced production site stress and vastly cut overtime. And on the cost front, automation allows for more unmanned MC fabrication hours, lowering production costs about 10%.”

Instead of just installing an MC, SANMATSU automated the process with a collaborative application using a cobot and OnRobot gripper, making the innovation a success.

Mr. Tanabe said emphatically, “Installing collaborative robots and applications can have a big impact, especially at small and medium-sized factories pursuing advanced HMLV production.”

The field of automation has grown tremendously over the last decades. Although many manufacturers have embraced automation, high barriers to implementation remain, especially among small and medium-sized companies. Deploying robotic applications on the manufacturing floor is still far too complex, timeconsuming, and inflexible. All of this drives up costs and the minimum number of parts produced, making automation an unviable option for many.

D:PLOY breaks down these automation barriers by finally removing complexity associated with robotic application deployments and redeployments, offering staggering time and cost-savings.

Business rates – are there secret increases hiding in your rates bill?

UK business rates are calculated by multiplying the RV (Rateable Value) of a commercial property by the multiplier. Freezing the multipliers certainly appears as a proactive solution, they have been frozen at their highest level since they were introduced in 1990.

At the Autumn Statement, the Chancellor announced that the average overall RV for England and Wales would rise by no more than 1%. Less than two months later, the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) have upped that to over 7%.

“This increase is not reflective of

individual industries or local authority areas at all.” Anthony Hughes, Managing Director of RVA Surveyors (pictured right), commented. “Taking into account the artificially inflated multipliers, commercial property occupants are

Freezing the multipliers was one of the policies announced to help businesses. Another ‘proactive’ action the government have paraded around is the support package – worth £13.6 billion. Roughly, two-thirds of the support package announced at the Autumn Statement was already in place and simply extended. Meaning that from November 2022, businesses will only receive roughly £4.5 billion in additional support.

Supporting the dream of green energy, with the help of Industry 4.0

The 2015 Paris Agreement has forced many countries to present longterm strategies and nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to reduce emissions. One strategy is to transform waste into usable fuels and Raven SR is a clean fuels company dedicated to achieving this. However, the company uses a process that requires high temperatures and precise control to maintain efficiency and cost-effectiveness. To streamline Raven SR’s energy transformation process, industrial heating technology company, Watlow provided extensive expertise in thermal system design, as well as Industry 4.0 control.

Raven SR is a clean fuels company that transforms municipal solid waste, organic waste and methane into high-quality, clean hydrogen and synthetic fuels. These synthetic fuels are Fischer-Tropsch synthetic fuels, meaning that they are produced from a gas-to-liquid polymerization technique that converts carbon monoxide and hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbon fuels that can act as substitutes for petroleum products.

At the heart of Raven SR’s processes is a CO2 reforming process that changes mixed feedstock and organic waste into products in an environmentally friendly way, without the need for combustion. As a result, no emissions are produced — only clean hydrogen and fuels as output.

The work done by Raven SR is a crucial step in achieving clean energy and greater energy independence. Not only does their process create fuel from waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill, but its products can also be created locally and delivered directly to gas stations in the region without the need for long-distance transportation or pipelines.

For more information about Watlow, Industry 4.0 or environmental applications of thermal systems, visit: www.watlow.com or, to find out more about Raven SR and its projects, please visit: www.ravensr.com

Digital Edge Subsea

Digital Edge Subsea supplies the oil and gas industry with its digital video recording system. The company, established more than 10 years ago, has nurtured strong customer relationships that has allowed for honest customer feedback, and this has been incorporated into the development of the Version 5 Edge DVR.

Conversations continue and now Digital Edge are pleased to be able to offer further software that will help their customers to serve their clients better.

Data Archive App Digital Edge will soon release a data storage and back-up solution that uses an integral app within Edge architecture, to avoid needing a 3rd party app. Edge

Archive handles the transfer of data from the internal DVR drives to Client storage, either on a NAS, a Raid, or a phased delivery to multiple external hard drives. Being a Native app, the data transfer ensures that the quality of Live recordings are not impacted by a 3rd party program trying to access the same file that the DVR app is currently using. Ensuring recorded data integrity and quality is of the highest importance.

Archive can act as a Simple data mirror of the correct internal drive data folders, or can be used to create multiple simultaneous backups of Client Deliverables. This can be done in continuous backup or a phased approach, i.e. after each dive.

Secondary printing (over-printing) onto linerless labels is now possible

Half the cost of adhesive labels is in the cost of the backing paper. Labels are offered ‘linerless,’ i.e. without backing paper, but instead there is a requirement for a release lacquer on the surface of the label.

This does not prevent a pre-printed label from being readable, but it will prevent it from being overprinted. Silmark Ltd offers a solution.

Silmark manufactures special inks. Many of these inks change colour if they are heated, or are exposed to other sources of energy. Accordingly, secondary printing can be carried out using a direct Thermal printer to activate a pre-coated patch of Silmark’s ‘Thermoprint’ ink. The thermoprint can change from white to black, or to one of several other colours.

Silmark also offers a similar system which uses a laser beam. This is non-contact & uses the light beam from a laser to produce a black (or other colour) image in a patch of special ‘Silmark’ ink. This system is capable of very high speeds.

Digital cloud system offers full vehicle compliance

Here at Business and Industry Today we are thrilled to reward CheckedSafe with the Company of the Month Award for outstanding service in the transport fleet compliance sector.

CheckedSafe offers a complete digital cloud solutions package to fleet management in commercial fleet transport, emergency services allowing them to monitor vehicle compliance across every vehicle in the UK and even whilst abroad. It costs only £1 per vehicle per week offering a cost-effective paperless reporting system.

Bus, HGV, Van and any other commercial vehicle drivers can download a handy app onto their mobile devices to create tailor-made vehicle checklists. The app even functions whilst in remote areas with no phone signals to enable checks to be completed on the move. This flexible, handy app is so easy to use: just check and go! The main office then receives each report allowing for a complete audit trail across the company. This seamless system makes sure that vehicles are Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVSA) compliant and automatically generates scheduling slots for vehicle ad-hoc repair as well as routine MOT’s and servicing.

what the industry needed from a handy digital system and it has been appreciated by fleet managers in the business. PMW Quarries knew immediately that the device had been designed by experts and commented, “Unlike traditional software providers, their knowledge of the industry from a legal and transport operator’s point of view is evident in the solution they have created.”

One of the huge advantages to the device is the insurance aspect courtesy of Darran’s specialist knowledge. When road accidents occur, it is essential that an insurance report is generated within the ‘golden hour’ immediately following the collision. A rapid report to the client and/ or broker can remedy the situation quickly and potentially save the transport company money.

Darran and Gary established the company in 2014 from its Burnley office base. The company has won multiple awards more recently including the 2022 Supply Chain Excellence Award for Fleet Innovation of the Year. Gary is a Fellow of the Society of Operational Engineers (SOE), both Darran and Gary both Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Logistics in Transport which is the prominent professional body for engineers in the UK. Gary is also a qualified Transport Manager in both HGV and PCV operations. With digital templates covering DVSA, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and The UK Border Force. It’s because of these great accolades that companies can be reassured that every aspect of CheckedSafe’s services covers up-to-date legal and health and safety frameworks.

The digital cloud system has grown from strength to strength providing fleet transport companies with this indispensable system. Gary explains the current trajectory of the company, “We have almost 100,000k assets in our system and close to 1 billion data points now recorded across all our clients, which total around 7000 individual depot. These clients include the RAC, Kier, Amey Northgate and hundreds of others from one man and his van up to fleets of over 10,000.”

Companies are often understandably nervous at first to use a fully-digitised system after years of paper-based vehicle checklists. Sometimes it’s difficult to make the transition from paper reporting.

“The objective was to introduce a system that reduced the administration burden, improved compliance and repair time.”

The system allows for daily walkaround checks on all vehicles, in fact ANY asset can be check so think outside of the box! If it needs checking we can probably create a digital process.

Founders Darran Harris and Gary Hawthorne had vast prior experience in transport operator and road traffic litigation, which allowed them to feed this knowledge into the design of the system. Darran and Gary knew exactly

The industry has noticed the impact of CheckedSafe and the company was awarded Transport Supplier of the Year 2019 in The National Transport Awards followed by The Innovator of the Year (non-contractor) finalist in the 2021 Specialist Award.

The team is always looking to enhance the cloud system and now provide a Lone Worker App for enhanced protection with direct links to the main office portal. For many companies having the lone worker app provides peace of mind to the driver and the rest of the team especially when working in remote locations and driving abroad. Swans Travel are luxury coach tour operators that offer trips in the UK and on the continent. For Peter Weston one of Swan’s fleet engineers, having the GPS built-in tags means he can track all the coaches, “I now know that all our drivers either home or abroad have done the daily check and can trace exactly the lime/ location and the movement taken around the vehicle to carry out the check.”

Darran and Gary have worked painstakingly hard to ensure that the cloud system is secure and tamper-proof for extra cyber security. Gary explained the protocols, “All our software belongs to us and we do not need to licence parts of it from others. Several of our competitors bolt their software onto other people’s which introduces a vulnerability.”

With added cyber protection, (CyberSmart Essentials Plus and ISO27001) companies are more than happy to use bespoke templates covering a multitude of vehicle paperwork. With unlimited cloud storage, fleet managers have access to maintenance reminders for all machinery and plant equipment such as obligatory LOLER checks and brake roller tests. Once uploaded the test sheets become completely paperless in the system. Pre-programmed to-do lists and calendar appointments can remind companies of MOT’s, servicing and even toolbox talks through an inservice messaging app. Checkedsafe has just launched its driver licence checking service (they were going to partner with other supplier but decided to build their own.

One of the biggest benefits to companies is the reduced carbon footprint through using a fully electronic digitised system. With no unnecessary paper printing the transport fleet industry can go greener with every click. At Building and Industry Today, we recognise innovation when we see it and CheckedSafe is the leading vehicle compliance system for all transport fleets.
