Childcare & Education Expo Review – Top Exhibitors
Making a difference
For the final live show of 2022, held at Coventry Building Society Arena from 23-24 September 2022, it was only right that Childcare & Education Expo returned to the place where it all began 12 years ago – the Midlands!
There was great excitement as guests Sid Sloane, Actor and Former CBeebies Presenter, and Alistair BryceClegg, Co-Founder of My First Five Years Ltd, opened day one of the show to a sea of smiling faces from across the childcare sector. Day two of the expo began with a bang, as special guest Ben Faulks AKA Mr Bloom from CBeebies opened the show with a great cheer from the visitors as they entered through the doors. It was a great joy to see visitors from far and wide exploring the show floor and discovering their unique interests.
Visitors took centre stage on Friday during Sid Sloane’s two-part interactive workshops. Stepping out of our comfort zones, we performed our way to success and left with new confidence & communication skills. Later that day, we sang our way through phase 1 phonics led by Stephanie Hammond. Stephanie taught the importance of securing the foundations of pre-phonics skills before children start their schooling career.
We provide a range of resources based on trees, introducing Oscar the Oak & Friends, for:
● Teachers, including those responsible for Science, Afterschool events, Holiday Clubs and Homework Clubs
● Nursery school teachers
● Reception schools
● Child minders
● Home-schooling
● Parents seeking additional support
There is something for everyone from ages 2-12
The resources, which are linked to the National Curriculum, range from webinars for both pupils and parents and teachers, printed and on-line materials and teacher-led activities including for forest schools and nature walks.
Pre-school
Parents and carers can use The Teacher’s Tree Manual to identify trees during walks. The Oscar the Oak Activity book can be used to guide crafting times and children can enjoy learning The Tree Song.
Childcare & Education Expo returns to Coventry Building Society Arena next year from 22-23 September 2023. Additional shows in the North and Midlands precede this event. This is our pick of the best exhibitors from this year’s Coventry event, listed here in alphabetical order: Child Paths & The Tree Academy. Further details can be found on this page.

Resources for home study, nurseries and forest schools
For early years. Children can explore the wonders of trees, collecting leaves and seeds, using the activity book for crafting as required. The Teacher’s Tree Manual enables informed adult-led nature walks and exploring times. Materials can be used flexibly. Teachers, carers and others can use resources for child-centred teaching with, or without printed materials.
KS 1, Years 1 & 2
We provide a range of resources from whole class activities to flexible teaching for individual students. We have a programme exploring trees which covers two years and explores identifying trees, where they come from and how to grow them. We are at the ‘wow’ stage. Our focus is on science, but we explore maths, measuring trees as they grow. History, English, Geography, Art and Biology are also explored in a range of activities. For PSHE, we explore team work. These resources enable the teacher to deliver on a cross-syllabus basis.
KS 2, Years 3 & 4
Tom Kitcher, Community Lead at Southampton City Farm, comments, “We’re very grateful for this help with our security
from Burg-Wächter. The farm is situated on an old site, and many of our padlocks, cabinets, and windows are outdated. The new padlocks will help to keep the animals in our enclosures secure, and the new safe will be used for important documents.
“Applying for the Burg-Wächter equipment was very easy. We went onto the company’s website and followed the link to its Secure Communities Scheme. Then all that was needed was to direct some details to an email address given there. I’m over the moon we did!”

At this age, children are keen to learn more about ‘how’. Building on the work of earlier years, but in a flexible way that enables those who have not covered this material to quickly learn, we explore more of how trees grow and function. Our focus is still on science, but we further explore maths, measuring trees as they grow. History, English, Geography, Art and Biology are also explored in a range of activities. For PHSE, we explore the impact of trees on health, and pupils can demonstrate team work. These resource enables the teacher to deliver on a cross-syllabus basis.
After School Clubs and Home Study
Our resources can be used across a range of scenarios. We run regular webinars for teachers, parents and pupils, so that they can engage with our team and be more informed.

CleanEx 2022: Your photo finish
So that’s a wrap for CleanEx 2022 and the comments and pictures just sum up what a successful show it was for all involved. Thanks to the sponsors and everyone who attended, exhibited and helped put the show together. After so many stops and starts to industry gatherings in recent times, it was much needed and very much appreciated as an opportunity to get together and show the strength and resilience that the industry has to get things back on track and move forward.
Around 1,600 visitors came through the doors of the stunning Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire over the two day event from 24-25 April 2022. While lower numbers than previous events, this was a great turnout considering it was Easter holidays, and also Ramadan for many. Understandably people are also still nervous about attending large scale events.
Exhibitor numbers were up 15% from the last event held in 2018 with 74+39 of
MiRiCal Emblems
Thanks to our participation in the CleanEx show earlier in the year, MiRiCal has been able to identify an emerging sector within the linen rental market that has come about as a direct result of the market conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
MiRiCal’s Managing Director, Mr Jonathan Dul, explains, “The almost wholesale closure of hotels and restaurants during the first lockdown forced most linen rental providers to pause their operations until restrictions were lifted; but not all venues closed down and a small demand for linen rental continued to exist.
“We met several small launderette and dry-cleaning operators at CleanEx who had moved into linen rental to satisfy a demand in their local area that existed while the bigger laundries
were not operating.
“These smaller firms have often retained the business even after lockdown & in many cases are continuing to add clients – all of the ones that we met at CleanEx were interested to understand how a supplier like MiRiCal could help them protect their investment by providing linen marking &
the industry’s leading businesses taking stands at CleanEx to showcase their latest innovations to a well targeted audience. Overwhelming feedback was that while the number of visitors were lower than CleanEx 2018, the quality of the people attending was extremely good, leading to meaningful conversations for both exhibitors and businesses that created relationships and solutions for the future. The exhibition hall was full of industry specialists excited to tell all about their latest developments, some for the very

Mark Evans, marine account manager at Freightcover, says, “Our new look website enables clients – whether Freight Forwarders or general shippers – to secure insurance for general items online, as well as download all documentation and make a claim. However, if cargo falls outside our extensive list of ‘standard’ items, we always advise contacting a member of the Freightcover team. Transition to CDS with CNS
CNS is now providing Customs Declaration Management Software to support declarants as they transition to CDS
The transition from CHIEF to CDS for submitting UK customs declarations is a major shift for importers, exporters and their supply chain partners in the UK.
Submitting import declarations via HMRC’s CDS system became mandatory from the 30th September 2022, with the switch to exports in Q1 2023.
UK declarants need to have compliant software suitable to fulfil these requirements.
Our simple, intuitive, and easy to use Cloud-based platform to submit CDS, CHIEF and UK transit declarations. Submit declarations for CNS and MCP ports, with CCS-UK integration on the roadmap. Other features include a configurable dashboard, MUCR processing, party directory and document storage. The platform has a range of APIs available.
Intuitive dashboards and tool tips will help remove the complexity of creating declarations in CDS.
Cloud-based means no delays and cost for on premise installation with a straightforward registration process. The platform can be accessed from multiple locations via multiple users.
The ability to store all your supporting documents in one location along with the declarations allows greater visibility and a compliant audit trail. APIs facilitate the smooth flow of data, removing manual input and reduces the risk of errors.

Commercial Vehicle Show Review – Top Exhibitors
2022 Commercial Vehicle Show hailed a resounding success
The 2022 Commercial Vehicle Show has closed its doors following three days of extensive business at Birmingham’s NEC from 24-26 May 2022. Strong visitor numbers, combined with a huge array of exhibitors spanning the road transport sector and compelling speaker sessions generating packed audiences, created a fantastic atmosphere throughout the show.
Demonstrating the confidence companies have in the event, numerous exhibitors chose the Show as the place to launch their new product lines, including Harris Maxus LCVs, TruTac fleet compliance and Locks4Vans next-generation security.
This helped to deliver a larger event in 2022 with strong visitor numbers making it an unmissable show for everyone involved in the commercial vehicle industry.
Expert speakers on the show’s two
Theatres tackled some of the most challenging topics currently facing the industry. The Road Ahead Theatre in Hall 5 and the Workshop Theatre in Hall 4, delivered in association with Commercial Vehicle Workshop magazine, provided a professional forum to address topics such as: ‘Driver facilities; a right, not a privilege’, ‘What to consider when electrifying your fleet’ and ‘Using DVSA data to improve compliance’, among others.
These presentation and panel discussions proved a resounding

success with greater audience attendance and participation than ever before. Many presentations were standing-room only as visitors gathered to find out more.
Visitor numbers of over 11,100 reinforced the Commercial Vehicle Show’s position as the UK’s biggest and best road transport event, providing a unique combination of innovations, services and solutions across the industry.
The 2023 Commercial Vehicle Show dates have been confirmed. Next year’s Show will take place at the NEC, Birmingham from 18-20 April 2023.
This is our pick of the best exhibitors from this year’s event, listed here in alphabetical order: CheckedSafe, Ecobat Battery, HJS Emission Technology, HOPE & Power-2GO. Further details can be found on this page and the next.

HOPE technical developments, protect your vehicles, protect your people
Established over 60 years HOPE was first to launch a Type Approved Reg 58, rear underrun bar to help prevent HGV rear underrun accidents. Following this success, 1990 saw the launch of safe-T-bars and later safe-Tsteps for LCV’s including Type Approved towing options to Regulation 55, tested in house and VCA approved.
One of the most vital considerations for operators having made an initial vehicle purchase is how to enhance or maintain their investment. Protection against rear vehicle damage from just one low impact knock is enough to recoup the cost of a safe-T-bar, so for many it is a must to have this product fitted.
Another time saving and cost-efficient innovation is HOPE ‘Sensor Connect’ which is compatible with all HOPE products including towing. It’s a simple plug and play harness, that allows full integration of the vehicles’ OEM reverse sensors, to be relocated from the factory bumper into the safe-T-bar or safe-T-step, without cutting into the vehicles’ wiring.
First launched at the CV Show, this product has been a huge success; and was this years’ winner of WHATVAN? After market Accessories Industry award. safe-T-bar is the only straight protection bar on the market that can offer

HJS Emission Technology GmbH have developed a range of retrofit SCR exhaust systems that enable the operators of Euro 5 diesel vans to upgrade to Euro 6 emission standards.
When retrofitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Technology, the emissions from diesel vehicles are vastly reduced. Once the retrofit is complete, vehicle owners benefit from charge free access into the numerous Clean Air Zones (CAZs) throughout the UK and the Ultra Low Emission Zone in London.
The HJS SCR system for Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV)/Van applications has been tested and approved in compliance with the Energy Saving Trust’s Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS) and approvals
are already in place for the following Euro 5 LCV/Van applications:
● Volkswagen Transporter
T5 including campervan & shuttle variants
● Renault Master
● Vauxhall Movano
● Nissan NV400
● Mercedes Benz Vito & Viano
● Mercedes Benz Sprinter
● Peugeot E7 taxi
● Citroen Dispatch Combi
● Fiat Scudo Combi
● Toyota Proace
● LTI Taxi TX4
● Land Rover Defender
● Ford Transit
● Volkswagon Crafter
Specifically developed for these LCV applications, the SCR exhaust system and Adblue dosing system is supplied as an add-on to the vehicle’s original factory fitted Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The system operates independently from the vehicle’s original electronic systems and is normally installed within one day.

How to avoid premature battery failure
Battery failure has long been the number one cause of CV breakdowns, but with the fact that many companies are now operating on double, or even triple, driver shift patterns, it is not difficult to see why even original equipment fitment conventional starting, lighting and ignition (SLI) batteries are struggling to cope with the demands of continuous use.
Thankfully, pan-European distributor Ecobat Battery can provide a solution that’s both affordable and provides an extended battery service life: the ODYSSEY AGM battery!
Engineered with specialist thin plate pure lead technology, which was first used in aerospace and the military, the ODYSSEY AGM can be discharged to 80% of its capacity, but crucially, will still start the engine and with an inherent fast-charging capability, it means that with this option, battery related breakdowns become a very rare occurrence. In addition, providing twice the power and three
times the life of conventional SLI batteries, they are typically lasting for four years plus, and come with a four year warranty.
Too good to be true, there must be a catch, is what many operators may be thinking and yes, this advanced technology obviously comes with a cost. However, despite being twice the price of a conventional SLI battery, the ODYSSEY AGM battery alternative becomes by far the cheapest option when they consider the savings they’ll make in terms of call out costs and unprofitable downtime, as well as providing them with a minimum four year service life, during which time it’s likely they would have had to replace their conventional SLI batteries three times. Hillhead 2022: Back with a bang
Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Hillhead 2022 – the quarrying industry extravaganza – welcomed almost 18,500 trade visitors and an unprecedented 604 exhibitors across three show days.
With an impressive total of just under 18,500 unique visitors in attendance and more than 600 of the world’s leading equipment manufacturers, suppliers and service providers taking part, this year’s Hillhead exhibition – held from 21-23 June 2022 at Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, Derbyshire – once again cemented its status as the world’s biggest working quarry event for the mineral products, construction, & recycling sectors. Cutting-edge company gives the energy sector digital backbone
Sustainability
Today is awarding the Company of the Month Award to Jules Energy for digital innovation in the energy retail sector.
Jos den Broeder realised he was onto something special when he was able to combine knowledge of the wholesale energy market with enterprising IT skills.
In 2019 he formed the company Jules Energy providing IT infrastructure to the energy sector. Now with bases in the UK, the Netherlands and the United States and with 100% positive customer feedback this company is a leading global comprehensive IT solution package.
With the current energy crisis and fluctuating energy prices causing havoc across the retail energy sector companies need a reliable IT backbone moving forward.
Jules Energy provides the perfect digital solution where all online transactions, administrative, operational functionalities are stored in one place.
Countries such as the United Kingdom have a privatised energy sector and this liberalisation of the energy market creates opportunities for customer growth portfolios. In the near future Jules Energy is hoping to expand through more western European countries. Jos den Broeder, CEO, explains the future chef-d’œuvre, “The Australian economic model follows the UK one, so if something works well there, the Australians are not far behind.”
In deregulated energy markets companies need to stand out and having robust digital solutions gives companies an edge over their competitors. The energy crisis is the perfect storm for disenchantment across the energy sector but having a digital tool to manage risk helps set energy transactions on a short and longterm basis. Markets are starting the shift from commodity to service and outcome focus and
smart energy companies are focussing on energy bills, not energy tariffs.
Jos den Broeder and the team had an exhibition stall at Utility Week Live the UK at the NEC in Birmingham. It is the UK’s largest trade show for utility industries across the energy and water sectors. Jules Energy successfully demonstrated its specialist software to the energy sector and showed how its digital tools can help manage risk.
Jules Energy sees a green future as the energy sector moves towards renewable energy sources. Wind, water and solar energy are green assets and the move to a greener sustainable future is driving market forces. Targeted software can help companies with distributed energy resources (DERs) towards complete decarbonisation.
Green Combined Power started working with Jules Energy in 2010. Working in the combined heat and power (CHP) and commercial horticulture sector the company found the IT Cloud platform allowed for a smoother more efficient operational time.
“Before Jules Energy came along I had to download data from one provider, analyse it and then
email energy suppliers half-hourly import/export forecasts almost on a daily basis.
The Jules Energy system lets me do all this in one place and it only takes minutes (often just seconds) to review, adjust and optimise the operating hours. The Jules Energy system lets me do a better job for my clients in much less time.”
The specialist software is user-friendly allowing for speedy data retrieval at a moment’s notice. The digital platform updates any changes within the day so all retrieval is up-to-date and accurate. Customers can participate in the day-ahead and intraday auctions staying on top of their transactions.
Flexitricity has been a valued UK customer of Jules Energy since 2018. Trading as a demandresponse service it wanted to sell flexible energy priced products and offer wholesale products. Using the Jules Energy platform they were able to add a full comprehensive range of energy supply products. This enabled Flexitricity to increase its customer base by 60%. Flexitricity appreciate the advanced risk strategy that Jules Energy employs – “Jules is our hedging backbone.”

Heating Technology Company of the Month
Sustainable comfort for everyone
In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are pleased to announce ELCO Heating Solutions as our Heating Technology Company of the Month.
ELCO is a worldwide pioneer in heating technology and has proven experience in the UK of delivering the highest standards in the commercial heating market. ELCO has the capabilities to provide intelligent, energysaving technology that is designed to meet the individual requirements of any project.
“We are the market leader in Switzerland and a long-established brand across Europe. Since 2001, ELCO has been an integral part for the Ariston Group which has a history spanning over 90 years. Our UK base is in Basildon, Essex but we have offices across Europe and beyond. We are confident of our strong presence here in the UK as we continue to set the highest standards in the commercial heating market with our heating technology and our latest renewable technology,” stated Anthony Byrne, Marketing Manager.
ELCO’s products are routinely specified for use in both public and private sector buildings. These products include renewable systems with heat pump only or hybrid solutions, highly efficient
wall-hung and floor-standing condensing boilers, heat interface units, CHP and pressure jet units, all of which are supported by a dedicated fieldbased sales team that offers free site surveys and an experienced technical department. “Our specification managers also travel the length and breadth of the country delivering free in-house CIBSE approved CPD modules for our customers,” added Anthony.
As specialists in commercial heating and hot water, ELCO prides itself on its close relationship with consultants and contractors. “We have been installing heat pumps in the UK for over 10 years so we’re well placed to provide assistance on this type of project or indeed any project where low emissions or decarbonisation is of prime importance,” said Anthony.
ELCO has a wealth of experience working on decarbonisation projects, particularly in the healthcare and education sectors, where it uses sustainable technologies such as heat pumps and hybrid systems to support green upgrades to UK buildings. ELCO’s R&D department is constantly investing in new product development and is hopeful to bring more heat pump options and hydrogen ready products to market within the next five years.
One particular product worth noting is the recent launch of ELCO’s New Hybrid System Selector Tool
which is a free software available to customers. It was designed to help reduce emissions, manage costs and save time. Anthony expanded, “The tool uses an extensive range of parameters to calculate the most suitable and sustainable heating product for a commercial project. For building services consultants working on heat pump only or hybrid system projects, ELCO’s tool can help identify the best combination of products to match requirements in minutes. The Selector Tool is suitable for planning stages 1 and 2, as it provides detailed ‘lowest yearly CO2’ and ‘lowest yearly cost’ comparisons between a heat pump only system, hybrid system and a new or existing boiler-only setup.
“The user-friendly Tool is also capable of calculating system parameters at any external temperature, as well as the Seasonal Performance Factor (SPF) as per CIBSE AM17. These calculations can be repeated across multiple system designs and flow temperatures, allowing consultants to make informed decisions on the benefits of different approaches. The Tool also offers the flexibility to select the switch point for heat sources, while providing analysis and an explanation of the selected option. It also successfully factors in weather fluctuations by referencing the hourly temperature variations
from the past three years which then allows it to create accurate temperature distribution for five key regions of the UK.”
If you would like to know how much energy will be used and the CO2 emissions produced in a new system compared to an old system, you can now book a free demo of the new Hybrid System Selector Tool with an ELCO specification manager so you can witness the usefulness first hand. This can be done at www.elco.co.uk/ selector-tool-demo/ or by scanning the QR code.

Another reason why Tecman is such a keyasset to its industry is its in-field support and training that can be offered anywhere in the world to build bespoke machinery rather than off-the-shelf products. 100% of its products are made through its in-house manufacturing facilities only using steel that is purchased from renowned European traders and manufacturers.
Using Robot Welding to build the rotary frames, Tecman understands that every customer has demanding applications, and because safety is paramount, each machine is built with a safety factor of 7. Another benefit to Tecman’s machinery is that because it manufactures its own cylinders, components and parts, it can easily trace stock and keep constant check on their quantity and availability. To ensure each Rockbreaker is made to perfection, each Rockbreaker is fully assembled and tested before shipment. Taking only two days to fully install, ease of assembly and commissioning is a priority to Tecman through all its designs.
In closing, we asked Brian how he felt receiving our award, he answered, “It’s always nice to receive an award.”

Good indoor air quality continues to be essential for our well-being. Ineffective ventilation contributes to mould growth; dank, musty smells; condensation on windows and walls; and a general deterioration of the fabric of the building. It is known that mould growth is a particular health hazard. An increase in the incidence of house dust mites – leading to allergy problems and poor respiratory health – is another consequence of inadequate ventilation. Thus, mechanical ventilation is even more of a necessity for the 21st Century home. A well-thought out, professionally designed, efficient, quiet and
economic ventilation system is vital. Vectaire’s whole house heat recovery products are aimed at controlling all the above problems. They can be installed in all types of dwellings, and are designed to ensure that ventilation is always delivered at the optimum (and most economic and energy efficient rate) for the comfort of residents. They provide continuous ventilation by extracting pollutants and humidity and maintain a constant intake of fresh, filtered air while meeting the latest requirements for energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and economy.

Kurage & Sateco: Jointly breaking new ground for prostheses
French startup Kurage is an industry leader in combining innovative medical technology and top-class sports in a more inclusive world. It uses intelligent products to help people with limited mobility move their paralysed limbs. One key element of their neuroprosthesis is the silicone force sensor SXTSC1 from Sateco.
The sensor is integrated into the sole of a shoe and provides data on walking behaviour. This information is evaluated by an AI-based algorithm that powers a system of neuromuscular electrostimulation electrodes. As a result, the system is able to reproduce functional movements in a personalised and secure manner to offset flaws in the sensomotoric performance of the movement apparatus.
“We have tested many different sensors
for this application,” explains Rudi Gombault, CEO of Kurage. “Only the silicone force sensor delivers the signal quality that the algorithm requires to function optimally.” The key is the soft structure of the sensor, which enables ideal sensor integration in the shoe, and the force distribution on the foot can be measured across a large area. As a result, an exceptionally clear signal is created. The signal is created in conjunction with the sensor’s silicone material and the appropriate evaluation electronics.
Sateco has already delivered several hundred silicone sensors and several electronic evaluation units to Kurage.

A little bit more about our toolmaking services
Dudley Associates Limited was originally created to be a centre of excellence for the design and manufacture of plastic injection mould tools on very short lead times; but soon expanded to include Plastic Injection Moulding and many other secondary services.
We are regularly involved with cutting edge development projects, the majority of which are confidential, and require high specification innovative tool making on very short lead times. Clients also ask us to refurbish, modify or run any existing tooling that they may have.
We manufacture high grade aluminium tooling (for which
we are specialists) and the more common steel production tooling, or a mixture of the two depending on the number of components required and the polymer type.
Mould tools can be manufactured for single or multicavity production, and to operate fully automated, semi automated, or to incorporate inserts which are hand loaded by an Operator – all engineered and designed according to your requirements and the complexity of the part.
We have manufactured tooling for surgical equipment, optical lenses, engine cowlings, air sensors, RF components, overmoulded electronics, fuel connectors, aircraft seating, casings, trim and marine components, to name but a small selection – from one-off manual tooling to fully automatic mass production.
Aluminium mould tooling?
Typically we are asked to design and manufacture aluminium tooling for representative prototypes, ‘new’ preproduction parts, or low/medium volume products.
There is a common misconception that aluminium tooling is limited to very low volumes (c. 5,000 shots), however we are specialists in this field and, while the tools remain under our care and handling, we have historically been able to produce 100,000+ parts from aluminium tools in engineering polymers. Many clients who have ordered our aluminium tools for prototype development use have then been able to use the same tool for production supply.
Our aluminium tooling is used with a very wide range of high end technical and engineering polymers including Ultem, PEEK, Nanotube fill, PTFE fill, Electro-conductive, glass filled PBT and Nylons, as well as the more common commercial plastics. The alloys we use are high-grade and sourced from some of the biggest UK stockholders. We are provided with Certificates of Conformity in order to underwrite a quality tool, built to last.
Steel mould tooling?
Typically we are asked to design and manufacture steel tooling for medium/high volume production (1,000,000+).
We offer the full range of high-end traditional tool making with the benefit of using the same quality, speed of manufacture and operational systems developed by us for First Tier rapid development tooling manufacture.
If you have a new tooling project or existing product where:
● Delivery is critical
● Exemplary technical input, flexibility, and quality are required
● In house UK design, manufacture, sampling, inspection and production is important
● Confidentiality is required
● You need an approved, experienced, and established
Supplier
…then we are the tool making & moulding partner for you.

Digital Edge Subsea
Digital Edge Subsea supplies the oil and gas industry with its digital video recording system.
The company, established more than 10 years ago, has nurtured strong customer relationships that has allowed for honest customer feedback, and this has been incorporated into the development of the Version 5 Edge DVR.
Conversations continue and now Digital Edge are pleased to be able to offer further software that will help their customers to serve their clients better.
Data Archive App
Digital Edge will soon release a data storage and back-up solution that uses an integral app within Edge architecture, to avoid needing a 3rd party app. Edge Archive handles the transfer of data from the internal DVR drives to Client storage, either on a NAS, a Raid, or a phased delivery to multiple external hard drives.
Being a Native app, the data transfer ensures that the quality of Live recordings are not impacted by a 3rd party program trying to access the same file that the DVR app is currently using. Ensuring recorded data integrity and quality is of the highest importance.
Archive can act as a Simple data mirror of the correct internal drive data folders, or can be used to create multiple simultaneous backups of Client Deliverables. This can be done in continuous backup or a phased approach, ie. after each dive.
For more information or a demonstration of the system, contact: info@digitaledgesubsea.com or visit: www.digitaledgesubsea.com

UNISIG Deep Hole Drilling Systems:
Perfection is never an accident
UNISIG produces deep hole drilling machines that are used around the world by nearly every industry imaginable – and at UNISIG, striving for perfection has never been an accident. To secure long-term success, the company decided to further invest in machining its own precision parts rather than subcontracting components, as some of the most
critical parts they produced have tolerances and complexity that cannot be made by most machine shops.
To machine their own parts while continuing to grow and develop new products, UNISIG embarked on a new approach to machining which would allow for
industry-leading CNC machine tool accuracy and performance to be coupled with new technology that would ultimately eliminate manual intervention in machining that prevails in many shops.
“The deliberate connection between engineering, design, and machining improves our product. Our
ability to rely on very high accuracy and productivity from our internal machining capacity allows UNISIG to provide more advanced solutions and value to its customers,” said Anthony Fettig, CEO of UNISIG. Automated machining was the goal, which required a change in thinking by the team’s engineers, programmers, and machinists. To harness this new direction, UNISIG put in the time and energy to secure the best manufacturing resources available, including several Okuma machine tools.
To begin, UNISIG devised a plan to combine modular fixturing, offline tool setup, and full simulation of the machine, workpiece, and tools to provide a platform of innovation within their machine shop. The team’s intent was to radically improve spindle uptime and exploit the full potential of automated CNC machining, even when the batch size would be only one part.
The first step of the UNISIG strategy was to move away from classic CNC boring mills and adopt the higher productivity potential of CNC horizontal machining centres with twin pallets. After consulting with credible industry sources and leveraging their internal team’s knowledge, the MB-10000H horizontal machining centre from Okuma was selected for medium-sized, highaccuracy part machining.
One of the most important factors in this capital investment was the need to trust the machine accuracy enough to program from its centre of rotation and let the machine run without stopping and manually verifying the machining process many times during the cycle. The Okuma MB10000H installation was a success and reinforced UNISIG’s wisdom to focus on automated machining – and the benefits were so extraordinary that UNISIG continued to look to additional Okuma solutions to bring its strategic vision to life.
UNISIG’s next target was large-part machining. Previously, to hold the finished machine tolerances, extensive hand scraping was necessary which added a lot of time and expense to produce these machines. UNISIG established a set of machining accuracy parameters that would eliminate much of this handwork to achieve tolerances.
Working directly with the local distributor, Morris Midwest, UNISIG was able to engage with Okuma America and Okuma Corporation’s technical leadership to tailor the specification of an Okuma MCR-A5CII 35x10 double column machine for the exacting geometry and overall volumetric accuracy needed.
The collective Okuma team ensured the MCR-A5CII machine tool specifications were defined and perfect for UNISIG’s application. A quick-change fixture system was developed by UNISIG to allow two parts up to 3m (10ft) long to be machined simultaneously and removed for setup offline. The results after installation were very impressive, allowing lights-out automatic machining of parts previously not possible for UNISIG to manufacture.
With two machines from Okuma running and performing to expectations, one more opportunity identified for upgrade resulted in the new MA12500 machine. The OSP Control common to these three Okuma machines was a big value to the programming and simulation group at UNISIG. “This baseline trust in Okuma is what allows UNISIG to excel at advanced manufacturing,” said Mr Fetting.

Vehicle hire specialists, Fiveways Group, supplies customers with a wide range of waste collection vehicles, including RCVs, hook lifts, ejection trailers, rear-end and front-end loaders, skip lorries and tippers. Founded in 1998, the family-owned business boasts an impressive customers’ list including Biffa, Veolia, Kier, Serco and several local authorities.
The current economic climate means that for many organisations the benefits of contract hire are even more appealing. These include the opportunity to significantly reduce capital outlay and preserve cash in the bank; fix monthly payments to provide stability and confidence; and removing the worry associated with estimating a vehicle’s residual value. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, contract finance ensures that all vehicles are constantly wellmaintained improving safety, cutting downtime, and lowering
additional costs.
Fiveways is also acutely aware of its role in society and earlier this year announced it would be donating all the revenue generated from the hire of a brand-new Dennis vehicle to its chosen charity – Alzheimer’s Society. It is expected that this will raise over £60,000 for the charity over the course of the year. The vehicle is also fitted with Fiveways’ patented LED digital advertising screens designed to engage, captivate and convey marketing messages to a target audience in real time.

Bridgestone’s commercial tyre portfolio continues to work in tandem with its best-in-class mobility systems to save time, add value and reduce cost of ownership for commercial fleets.
For Bridgestone, its commercial support has always represented more than its premium products alone, with its new tyre and fleet management solution, ‘Fleetcare’, a perfect example of this.
Fleetcare combines Bridgestone’s best-in-class tyre range and tyre management solutions with fleet management solutions from Webfleet, offering both tyre and fleet management solutions with integrated and connected data – all delivered by one single partner. Thanks to the use of combined tyre and vehicle data, Fleetcare provides smarter and more predictive maintenance solutions, resulting in optimised performance and increased convenience. And for the first time, it is now available for small and medium sized fleets in ‘Fleetcare Go Plan’ version.
Meanwhile, its ground-breaking products such as the Duravis All Season, Duravis R002 and
its range of fuel-efficient Ecopia tyres offer significant savings and environmental benefits.
In terms of the environment, Bridgestone also prides itself on being a flag-bearer for decarbonisation, with the company firmly believing that it has a responsibility to support the realisation of a sustainable society. The foundations are already being laid to become a business that future generations of children can rely on.
In its commitment to the realisation of a sustainable society, Bridgestone recently unveiled its E8 company framework.
The ‘Bridgestone E8 Commitment’ consists of 8 values starting with the letter ‘E’ (Energy, Ecology, Efficiency, Extension, Economy, Emotion, Ease and Empowerment), which the company will commit to creating, together with employees, society, its partners and customers.

Christeyns Food Hygiene: Inspiring a world without waste across the food and beverage industry
In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are pleased to announce Christeyns Food Hygiene as our Hygiene Solutions Company of the Year.
Christeyns Food Hygiene is well known in the industry for its specialised, premium chemicals, reliable equipment, and flexible, customised service. Based in Warrington, the firm offers a wide variety of engineering and hygiene solutions to the food and beverage industry, from central and decentral cleaning and disinfection systems to dosing systems, ultrasonic cleaning installations and access control equipment. Specialities such as dry lubrication and fogging systems, foam generators and washers for moulds complete the range.
We spoke to Graham Hunneman, New Business and Corporate Accounts Director for Christeyns Food Hygiene, who commented, “We are delighted to receive this award, even more of an achievement following an extremely challenging 12 months, not just for CFH but for everyone in the food industry.
“Despite our robust strategies following the year of lockdown, the geopolitical situation has led to an increase in the cost of raw materials and new challenges to conquer, hitting both us and our customers hard. We are however working
to mitigate these increases with our customers by improving efficiency and offering a top-notch customer service with advice on best practice. Working in partnership provides the best outcome for all parties.”
CFH operates as part of Christeyns UK, whose headquarters are in Bradford. Christeyns UK’s business interests cover food hygiene, laundry and professional hygiene with markets across the UK and Ireland. The parent company, Christeyns NV, set up in 1947 in Gent, Belgium, has grown from a familyowned business into a big international player, rooted in local communities to really understand the needs and expectations of its client base.
Keeping a close eye on the global market, and foreseeing some of the potential issues, CFH invested almost a million pounds into additional storage facilities for the caustic soda that is crucial to their food and beverage customers. This ensured a continuous supply for its customers and the continuation of the crucial food manufacturing sector.
During COVID, CFH was able to explore other opportunities and supplied the industry with the first BSI quality assured hand gel. By staying flexible during this period, the company has managed to keep its profits healthy to fuel future growth and investments.
As part of an international group, CFH is able to continue its focus on innovation, and build partnerships with small to medium-sized customers. Graham continued, “We have recently entered into a partnership with an equipment manufacturer called HMD which enables us to offer better engineering solutions and service packages to our customers, as well as funding some of HMD’s bigger projects to support expansion.”
Christeyns Food Hygiene has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill for the last two years as it puts sustainability at the heart of company policy. By working in partnership with ACM Environmental, the company achieved exceptional environmental performance with Zero Waste to Landfill in 2020, 2021 and is on target for 2022.
Christeyns Food Hygiene are proud to have been awarded the EcoVadis silver medal which is an evidenced-based online platform that enables companies to evaluate the sustainability performance of themselves and their customers.
In the midst of the current economic climate leading to a shortage of raw materials and price increases across the industry, CFH recognises the struggles that its customers are facing, and the company is working harder and harder to drive efficiencies. With this relentless struggle for cost savings, the food industry’s primary role is to produce safe quality food and to ensure that the products leaving the plants are safe. Graham continued, “Our main priority now is to ensure the supply of products to our customers, in spite of a chemical industry supply chains difficulties which is being driven by the Ukraine crisis, drought and floods, COVID pandemic, economic stability, energy and fuel, and labour shortages.”
These struggles represent an opportunity to look more closely at cleaning and disinfection processes and will lead to better monitoring and control of all processes in the long run. This is the only valid method to define potential savings while maintaining a safe food production environment, and the high level of professionalism of the food industry workers and suppliers must be paramount in the interests of food safety.
Regarding competition, Graham had this to say, “While our products are similar to those produced by others, we offer unparalleled technical expertise for customers. As the largest family-owned chemical business in the world, we have relatively little red tape which means decisions can be pushed through faster. We encourage employees to be creative in order that as a company, we are always moving
forwards and staff enjoy working for the company.”
Looking forward, the company has ambitions to expand into larger international groups, an important part of the growth strategy for CFH. A recent partnership with the global company Mondelez, owner of brands such as Cadbury, Toblerone, Philadelphia, was a step in the right direction, and the firm is looking to cement more of these partnerships.
CFH recognises that the next year or so is likely to be very uncertain for all these reasons already discussed, and Graham remarked that, “Normally we can horizon scan the near future, but now everyone is working blind with so much unpredictability. However, as a debt-free, profitable business, we continue to make great progress in data management to manage our costs, and this helps us to make quick decisions based on facts, rather than hope or belief.”
The company projects its UK operation as a centre of excellence throughout the world, being proactive and working closely and encouraging small starter businesses. At the other end of the spectrum, they also work together with partners and retailers to work towards a cleaner tomorrow and develop best practices across the food industry.
Graham concluded, “CFH is honoured to be our Hygiene Solutions Company of the Year, we all have measurable KPIs but any award is a recognition of our entire team who work so hard, we are very proud of them, and this award validates all of our hard work.”
