New modular retractable barrier system launched by Seton
A new retractable barrier system, named EasyExtend, has been launched into the market, offering unique features and benefits for use in industrial and outdoor spaces.
Developed by the health and safety solutions provider Seton, the new and rugged unit is designed to cordon off areas in warehouses, factories, distribution centres and construction sites.
It can span 10 metres – further than most other retractable barriers on the market – meaning a more efficient use of resources. It can be used with standard traffic cones, with its dedicated post and base system, or can be fixed directly onto walls or other surfaces.
The EasyExtend also uniquely stores all the components of the barrier inside the base, making it ideal for rapid and easy setup in the event of a hazard, as well as being possible to store in stacks with little space.
The barrier can be used in three different ways. The modular post and base system gives the choice of using single or duallevel tapes, allowing the user to create a more imposing boundary if they choose to.
Burg-Wächter renews its Secure Communities Scheme
Once erected, the base portion features an integrated weight for stability. For extra sturdiness in harsh weather or on uneven surfaces, the user can then fill the base with an extra 12 litres of water or sand.
An adapter can also fix the tape cassette, or clip tape ends, to the top of any standard traffic cone. This lets cones be used in place of posts, if needed, such as around large vehicles.
The same barrier can cordon between fixed objects or walls, rather than needing the posts. Special EasyExtend brackets hold the tape cassette, while a separate receiver clip holds the tape end. Both can be fixed permanently or magnetically to walls, racking, store checkouts or even vans.
For more details about the Seton EasyExtend retractable barrier, visit: www.seton.co.uk/easyextend
Security specialist Burg-Wächter UK is re-launching its ‘Secure Communities Scheme’, which gives regional community leaders and volunteers the chance to win a security kit worth up to £200 for their organisation. Any regional initiative that is run by or supports the local community can apply.
Burg-Wächter launched the scheme in recognition of the fact that people around the country who are doing their bit for their community should not have to worry about the security of their premises, equipment or storage areas. The company’s Secure Communities Scheme is its way of saying thank you to community leaders for supporting people in their area.
The type of project or organisation that the scheme is open to is very wide-ranging. It could be a scouts group, a local sports group like a cycling or football club, a school afterhours club, a hospital or healthcare
community programme, a provider of events for children or OAPs, a facilitator of village activity, or a town/ village charity. As long as the initiative is run by or supports the local community, and it has a specific security need Burg-Wächter would like to hear about it. Successful applicants will each receive a tailored security kit to help secure property, premises, equipment or storage areas to the value of £150£200 at retail price.
The Secure Communities Scheme is an ongoing initiative, which has already helped 97 regional causes through the provision of over 2,000 pieces of security equipment.

Thermal Inkjet: The low-maintenance, high
resolution printing solution
Thermal inkjet (TIJ) printers are the perfect solution for those looking to dispense with the high maintenance demands of continuous inkjet printers. Offering a high-resolution mark suitable for the fine detail of barcodes and logos as well as the variable data of date, time and batch codes, TIJ printers offer a low maintenance printing option by having a printhead integrated into every ink cartridge. Any problems with the printhead can be solved by replacing the cartridge rather than calling out a specialist service engineer.
T-Mark, a subsidiary of Timbermark ID Systems, is a core distributor of TIJ printers from Chinese supplier, Sojet, and offers a range of low-cost, highresolution printers with from one to six printheads.
The Elfin E1S printer is the smallest in
the range, which uses a single remote printhead and is programmed via a touch-screen controller. It can be used to customise pre-printed labels with variable data. Using either solvent or aqueous-based inks, it can print date and batch code information onto metal, plastic and glass as well as wood and cardboard.
All the TIJ printers are available to purchase direct from the company’s e-commerce site at: www.t-mark.eu Timbermark also has a new distribution centre in Belgium so can supply landed, duty-paid stock from its UK or EU bases.

Leading edge technology for vehicle protection from mines and IEDs
In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are pleased to announce Advanced Blast & Ballistic Systems as our Mine Blast Technology Company of the Month.
ABBS is a world-leading company that produces novel, patented solutions to protect occupants of armoured vehicles from mine and IED blasts. What’s so unique about the ABBS protection systems is that it includes two active systems designed to counteract the threats to the occupants. These systems are Vehicle Global Acceleration Mitigation (VGAM™), a Vehicle Active Floor System (VAFS ), and a passive Composite Reinforced Belly Plate (CRBP).
ABBS originated from a single observation by Roger Sloman of a mine blast test on an armoured vehicle in 2008. The high-speed video showed that the vehicle did not move immediately when the mine exploded, it took 10ms for the lifting forces to overcome gravity and overturn the vehicle. Roger saw that this 10ms
delay was a time window of opportunity to stop the vehicle from being blown into the air.
Therefore, in December 2008 Roger defined the VGAM patent application, using rocket motors to push down on top of the vehicle, and in 2013 identified the concept of turning the rocket motors upside down and making them the skids of helicopters to stop them crashing. However, the development of eVTOL in 2016 then became another risk to the people in the vehicle and to the property over which they fly.
The initial development of the powerful, fast-acting Linear Rocket Motors for the armoured vehicle VGAM™ system translated easily to the eVTOL crash prevention system, resulting in two concurrent, huge market opportunities. The key aspect for both markets is that there is a severe risk to life for the occupants of the vehicles, and the drones and eVTOLs are clearly also a risk. Both the armoured vehicle VGAM™ technology and the eVTOL Safety System are highly sophisticated technology that are right for the job.
Let’s dive deeper into how ABBS’ protective systems
Aerospace Technology Company of the Month
provide safe solutions. The eVTOL and cargo drone system has three major elements, a Look-Down video/ AI system to continuously identify emergency landing sites under the aircraft, a parachute to control the landing speed, and for heavier aircraft a retrorocket addition similar to that used by the Russians to drop tanks with crew inside, as illustrated. Emergency landings may be caused by bird strikes, battery fires, and interference with, or failure of control or GPS navigation systems, so for operation over an urban environment the ability to instantly identify where to land will be critical for certification to operate.
For the armoured vehicles the VGAM™ system reacts within 4ms to provide massive downforce to the protected vehicle to keep it on the ground to prevent potentially fatal spinal compression injuries to the crew. The LRMs can be fired selectively, and the effective weight of the vehicle can be increased up to 1,000 tonnes.
Initially, the shockwave from an under-belly mine or IED blast can fracture legs and cause loose items on the floor to be accelerated rapidly into the cabin space, presenting a secondary threat. The ABBS
VAFS™ system uses energetic effectors connected to the floor which rapidly pull it down so any objects and the occupants’ feet are not in contact with the floor, preventing leg injuries and the secondary flying object threat.
Thirdly, the Carbon Fibre Reinforced Belly Plate design can be up to 30% lighter than a standard armoured steel belly plate for the same peak deformation level.
The extent of R&D that has gone into creating this technology is mind blowing. Roger has created a world first innovative solution that has the potential to save many lives, and there is now strong interest from both the US Army and a major European defence company. It’s clever, it’s powerful, and it works.
ABBS is currently raising funding to complete development of both the armoured vehicle and the eVTOL survivability solutions, see: www.crowdcube.com/companies/ advanced-blast-ballistic-systems-ltd/pitches/lz9Qgq

The Electric Heating Company (EHC) is an industry leading supplier of electric heating and hot water products in the UK. Since the company’s inception in 2005, EHC has expanded significantly and has developed and built upon its product knowledge, enabling the company with the ability to accommodate almost any Central Heating and Hot Water requirement. Maintaining its position at the forefront of the industry has been achieved through EHC’s extensive product knowledge and support, offering an unrivalled skillset for the heating and hot water industry.
In terms of its range, EHC offers a full range of quality electric heating products including Electric Boilers, Electric Radiators and Unvented Stainless Steel Hot Water Cylinders. Designed with meticulous attention to detail, EHC’s products have been specifically developed with both the installer and homeowner in mind and as such, all the controls used for its products are contemporary and user friendly. In fact, the entire range of Electric Radiators are Wi-Fi ready and can be operated remotely using its free Smart App.
From the first initial enquiry to receiving a completed order, EHC ensures that customer satisfaction is at the heart of its operations, and the company has gained a strong reputation for its customer focus, always putting the needs of the customer first. In recent developments, as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and new legislation restricting
gas boilers being sold in new build properties from 2025, EHC has purposely reviewed all of its market activities.
“Our marketing function was completely overhauled which resulted in increased digital marketing and online presence. We have seen a number of new customers attracted to our electric boiler offering which now also includes the Mercury Combi Electric Boiler.
“We are delighted with our results over the last two years across all our product ranges and despite aggressive sales forecast, we completed 2020/21 with a 19% growth rate against the corresponding forecast,” stated Bill Walters, Managing Director.
EHC has showcased its strength & seen impressive growth during unprecedented times. Some of the most popular items throughout the pandemic have been EHC’s Comet Electric Boiler and Slim Jim Electric Boiler cylinder packs. Bill expanded, “They have been extremely popular as we offer a one stop shop, which includes the required system controls. We have also witnessed an increase in demand for our combination boilers such as the Astro and Mercury Electric Boilers. Additionally, our Solaris
and Edge Heaters have been successfully specified within many new build development projects.”
Due to increases in its general activity, the company has responded to this new demand and increased its staffing levels across various departments of the business. EHC has also increased its focus on its marketing activities, consolidating the department with additional skills and experience.
A noteworthy flagship service for the company, EHC is offering a Total Care package, which is designed to support social landlord tenants. The package has proven to be a crucial, for any social housing projects that EHC has been involved with. “With the increased focus on energy reduction we have been successful in supporting tenants when they transition from aged storage heating products to our modern generation electric heating solutions,” said Bill.
EHC also operates an AHC Accredited Heating Installers program throughout the UK and with the swing towards electric heating products between now and 2025, EHC plans to develop initiatives designed to increase its coverage of the AHC scheme and to support gas engineers considering retraining and installing electric alternatives. The company’s plans will also include webinar training and access to EHC’s full suite of technical product videos.
Indeed, the future looks bright for EHC, and the company has showcased its wealth of industry leading expertise throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. A worthy recipient of our Company of the Year Award, EHC continues to
innovate and exceed industry expectations through its range of products and customer focused services and we look forward to seeing EHC’s future plans, come to fruition.
Bill added, “At EHC we have always endeavoured to promote electric heating solutions and create awareness for this growing market and as such, we are delighted to be recognised with this award. Our dedicated staff endeavour to provide accurate and meaningful advice with the many enquiries we receive on a daily basis. Their hard work throughout the pandemic allowed us to provide a continuity of business to our customers and installers during uncertain times.”

Farm Business Innovation 2021 Review
Dudley Peverill Associates
UK agriculture is changing. Rural businesses are having to adapt quicker than ever before, due to the loss of the Basic Payment Scheme, Brexit, increasingly volatile markets and social demographics. Farm financial margins are being squeezed further, with a fairly bleak outlook in some cases, leaving some farming businesses wondering how they will support the family and stay afloat. The very nature of farming reduces the ability to dedicate time and resources to creating new income streams, now vital to rural businesses.
Due to the seasonality, workload and time pressured nature of agriculture, it can be excruciatingly difficult for a rural business manager or owner to find adequate time and resource to complete a project. Often things are started and progressing well, only to be placed on hold due to existing workloads. This often leads to delays in project delivery, additional expenditure and poor performance. This becomes exponential when a diversification project is itself complex and has time constraints (planning applications, etc).
Dudley Peverill Associates is on hand to provide the complete diversification project solution. From estate strategy, evaluation of resources, selection of appropriate enterprises to the instruction of professionals and final implementation, we are here to help. Rural family businesses can focus on their passion, farming, secure in the knowledge that

Discover your love for Disc Golf!
Disc Golf is the fastest growing sport in the world. Already seeing impressive growth up to 2019 it exploded during the pandemic as a naturally socially distanced outdoor sport appealing to all demographics and especially family groups looking for outdoor fun.
Appealing to landowners looking for an additional activity on site, it’s a low cost to get started and with limited maintenance costs it drives a varied footfall to sites from Activity Centres to Forestry England and National Trust properties. Disc Golf can and does fit anywhere.
Disc Golf UK’s Co-owner, Richard Hatton, stumbled across the sport in 2007 and was immediately hooked. Within a year he became the Secretary of the British Disc Golf Association and later the UK’s Co-ordinator for the international Professional Disc Golf Association.
Frustrated by the slow growth in the UK compared to the US and Northern Europe he set up Disc Golf UK in 2015 to drive new course installations and raise the profile of the sport in

Enhancement of the All-Stainless range from SWEP with B222 largesize model
SWEP, world-leading supplier of brazed plate heat exchangers (BPHEs), is once again expanding its AllStainless range for the most demanding applications, introducing the B222 large-size model.
All-Stainless is a range of durable, compact, and efficient BPHEs for the most demanding applications that often use aggressive media such as ammonia, deionised water system, or fluids with high sulphur content, all of which can be corrosive to copper.
All-Stainless is therefore highly suitable for a wide range of industrial applications with high demands on corrosion resistance, low tolerance for contamination and/or high operating temperatures.
During the fall of 2021, the B221 was added as the first large size model to enhance a strong and diversified portfolio of existing small and medium size models. Introducing the B222 as the latest largesize addition, complements this highly robust and efficient range now with a total of six All-Stainless products to suit a wide range of needs for the
most demanding applications.
Whereas the signature features of the B221 was high efficiency and high-pressure approvals, the B222 complements its sibling large-size model with bigger ports and a higher fluid capacity.
Frida Cullin Persson, Segment Manager with SWEP, explains, “All-Stainless is the natural choice for all those demanding applications when copper needs to avoided. The range combines robustness and durability with high heat transfer efficiency offered in a small construction. With the two recent largesize additions of B221 and B222, each with unique features, we offer the market the most diversified and strong All-Stainless range of compact and efficient heat exchangers.”

Service with self-service lockers that loaned out tablets to frontline workers at the beginning of their shifts. “The self-service loan lockers sped up the access of devices for frontline personnel whilst keeping track on the assets. The brief stated that the equipment needed had to be ready to go, fully charged if required and easy for staff to ‘check-out’ devices and be on their way. Our loan lockers can be accessed 24 x 7 without staff interaction and the need to access IT equipment without staff interaction was highlighted throughout this experience so we were proud to play our part in helping stop the spread of viruses,” said Denise.
LapSafe® has a large range of products including Self-Service equipment, Diplomat Lockers, Diplomat™ UV-C, Flex – its personal storage and charging lockers, ClassBuddy™ – its cost-effective storage and charging range, and Mentor™ – its intelligent storage and charge range. All products are manufactured in the UK and sold by over 300 business partners locally and across the UK, Europe, Middle East, Australia and USA. They are fully and
independently tested to meet or exceed required British Safety Standards and HSE guidelines and covered by an extensive lifetime warranty.
After already achieving so much, we asked Denise what the company had planned for the future, she answered. “Our in-depth knowledge of the education and commercial sectors, coupled with extensive in-house IT skills, gives us an edge over the competition. We plan to continue designing and developing our range to stay abreast of the fast pace of change within the world of technology.”

Digital Edge Subsea
Digital Edge Subsea supplies the oil and gas industry with its digital video recording system.
The company, established more than 10 years ago, has nurtured strong customer relationships that has allowed for honest customer feedback, and this has been incorporated into the development of the Version 5 Edge DVR.
Conversations continue and now Digital Edge are pleased to be able to offer further software that will help their customers to serve their clients better.
Data Archive App
Digital Edge will soon release a data storage and back-up solution that uses an integral app within Edge architecture, to avoid needing a 3rd party app. Edge Archive handles the transfer
of data from the internal DVR drives to Client storage, either on a NAS, a Raid, or a phased delivery to multiple external hard drives.
Being a Native app, the data transfer ensures that the quality of Live recordings are not impacted by a 3rd party program trying to access the same file that the DVR app is currently using. Ensuring recorded data integrity and quality is of the highest importance.
Archive can act as a Simple data mirror of the correct internal drive data folders, or can be used to create multiple simultaneous backups of Client Deliverables. This can be done in continuous backup or a phased approach, ie. after each dive.
For more information or a demonstration of the system, contact: info@digitaledgesubsea.com or visit: www.digitaledgesubsea.com

TANA
Blaxtair is the solution for safety on recycling sites
After several years of partnership with Arcure, the recycling leaders in Europe and the USA (Suez, Veolia, Paprec…) have just surpassed the 1,500 Blaxtair systems installed on recycling sites in France for the protection of pedestrians around handling machines (loaders, excavators and forklifts). This makes it one of the largest Blaxtair fleets out of more than 12,000 units in operation worldwide. Franck Gayraud, CEO of Arcure explained, “Using Artificial Intelligence, Blaxtair is the only smart 3D camera able
Water Management
TANA Recycling Machinery UK has a mission to provide customers with simply more money on the bottom-line with cutting-edge technology in solid waste management. All TANA products aim to provide maximum efficiency and profit to make waste management businesses thrive. TANA machines are designed with skill and experience using the best components available. All products are manufactured from the TANA headquarters in Finland.
When using the right machine, waste can be transformed into valuable raw materials. Reducing, re-using and recovering waste to manage waste sustainably can be done profitably. Efficiently recycling waste by conventional means is notoriously difficult, and in most cases only a certain percentage of the waste ends up recycled. But what if there was an easier way that recycled waste from a variety of materials?
We are lucky enough to have the most versatile machine on the market, the TANA Shark Shredder. General waste, mattresses, tyres, wood, plastic, C&I, C&D the Shark can handle them all and more. Pair that with excellence in service and you have a winning formula.
There are many applications to which the TANA Shark shredder can be used. It can shred all kinds of end-of-life tyres. These could come from cars, trucks, aircrafts, and heavy-duty vehicles and can be difficult to recycle. The TANA Shark uses high-torque shredders to make it possible to shred tyres to an 80mm particle size in just one pass and separates most of the metal wires directly from the shredded material flow on the conveyor.
The steel wiring is removed in the shredding process by an over-band magnet in the unloading conveyor. Once separated, shredded tyres and metals can be sold and reused in many ways.
In support of the TANA shredders range, TANA ProTrack® offers the possibility to significantly improve the engagement of personnel to a company and their work. TANA ProTrack® allows users to track their operations in real time enabling them to see the numbers and understand the waypoints that in turn will increase work efficiency.
Customers of TANA Recycling Machinery UK operate in a variety of areas amongst the waste management industry. The team at TANA Recycling Machinery UK’s job is to help customers do their jobs as easily, costeffectively, and eco-friendly as possible. Their efforts and proficiency in achieving that goal has been recognised recently as they received the honour of accepting the Sales Team of the Year Award within the business.

EMEX: Reduce your energy use
Energy is a cost to most organisations that has grown as a proportion of overall expenditure in recent years. And yet, there is considerable potential within most organisations to make large energy cost and carbon emission savings through the installation of energy efficiency measures.
EMEX, held at London’s ExCeL from 24-25 November 2021, connects all industrial and commercial energy consumers with leading experts, policy makers and suppliers. EMEX is more than just an event. It’s a platform where practitioners and experts from various backgrounds and sectors are coming together to share their knowledge and experiences from successful implementations of energy efficiency strategies.
Whatever the size of your business there is an opportunity to find more efficiency in your energy use. Applying silo thinking to energy management rarely delivers the maximum savings possible. A far more effective approach is to focus on the whole operation and identify the interdependencies between each function.
With this broader view, it is possible to develop and implement solutions that deliver greater cost reductions by increasing energy efficiency across multiple facilities, reducing maintenance costs, reducing water consumption, decreasing production downtime, removing supply chain costs, delivering a return on investment, increasing business assets value and enhancing workplace productivity.
IC Synergy
IC Synergy is a leading energy management company saving clients money. We provide specialist services to businesses to help identify and reduce energy usage, energy costs, and comply with government legislation.
With an excellent range of energy services, icSynergy’s standout service is the energy management system. This SaaS platform enables businesses to monitor and measure their energy usage across the entire business at one or multiple sites.
This year’s EMEX takes place from 23-24 November 2022 at ExCeL, London. This is our pick of the best exhibitors from last year’s show, listed here in alphabetical order: Aceleron, B2B Energy & IC Synergy. Further details can be found on this page.

There are not enough ‘Energy Experts’
Ihave always known that there are not enough energy consultants in the UK. If the government announced tomorrow that we were to reduce our emissions immediately and all businesses had to appoint an expert, it simply wouldn’t happen.
It is not just the volume of experts, but the quality of the expert.
The world needs experts who have a clear understanding of all energy services with the experts needing to understand data, procurement, and energy management.
The key area however, is to deliver implementation which is one thing we all really have to embrace. If we do not embrace implementation, then the whole process will collapse and it all becomes a waste of time.

Honeywell Transmission Risk Air Monitor
Honeywell is introducing a new, costeffective monitor for use in schools, restaurants, offices, homes, and all other occupied spaces. The device alerts users when conditions are present that may increase the risk of exposure to airborne viral transmission in an indoor area.
The Honeywell Transmission Risk Air Monitor is an easy-to-deploy, portable device that measures carbon dioxide and features a proprietary risk alerting system based on different activity levels within a room. This allows end users to proactively improve indoor ventilation, which according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, can help reduce the spread of certain diseases and decrease the risk of exposure among building occupants.
Research conducted by scientists at the University of Colorado has shown that realtime monitoring of indoor ambient air can be an indicator of increased risk of airborne viral transmission, utilising different levels of riskbased factors such as CO2 concentration levels and the type of human activity in the area.
Using this guidance and Honeywell algorithms, Honeywell identified air quality conditions that are driven by common activities and variables such as average room size, number of people present, breathing rate, and duration. The device comes with three pre-programmed indoor activity settings: low activity (movie theatres, libraries, and classrooms), medium activity (restaurants, offices, small clinics), and high activity (gyms, indoor arenas, recreation centres) and is recommended for coverage of 800-1,000 square feet.
For each setting, the monitor provides indications using a traffic light pattern (green, yellow, or red) and a sound alarm so users can be aware of conditions that may increase the risk of airborne transmission based on detectable CO2 levels. www.solentgasconsultants.com

electrical generation, waste preparation and material recovery. The process can be operated between 600°C & 900°C depending on the Feedstock. This adds another layer of flexibility as the temperature can be adjusted to allow customers to run different waste streams at different times.
The key to the solution is that it empowers the customer with the control of their own waste streams by ensuring disposal method & cost, adding circularity, and freezing energy costs up to 2MWth.
PyroCore has consolidated its offices, commissioning and demonstration facilities to one location. The headquarters is home to a team of 25, including 17 engineers, who are focused on providing solutions for a better, cleaner future. This consolidation allows for a true end to end experience for visiting prospects and has created unity in the purpose of Pyrocore and its sustainable journey.
In this issue of Sustainability Today, we are pleased to announce PyroCore as our Waste Transformation Company of the Month.
In 2018, 3TFinance took over an existing pyrolysis technology and created PyroCore. Since 2018, 3T have invested over £25 million into the continuation and further development of this technology. This has led to the delivery and commissioning of four units onboard Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers and a commercial demonstration and research facility with a capacity to process throughputs from 5kg/h
up to 500kg/h. The three units are used to conduct detailed trials of their prospect’s waste, demonstrate the processing of similar wastes, and conduct research on other troublesome waste streams. Through testing, Pyrocore provides accurate real-world data on efficiency, energy outputs, and material recovery. This enables them to work with industry to improve circularity, carbon capture, and Corporate Social Responsibility.
For example, they successfully recovered glass & carbon fibres from wind turbine blades and aluminium from aluminium plastic blends such as crisp packets and coffee cups. The recovered materials are then further treated to increase their value and application possibilities.
At the core of the Pyrocore solution is the Phoenix. The Phoenix is a continuous and selfsustaining commercial unit that processes 500kg of waste an hour. The system has a modular design allowing it to be used for a variety of applications, offer a range of benefits, and ultimately make the technology future proof and flexible. These additional modules include
Alexander Van Heuverswyn, the commercial director of PyroCore, would like to add that it is not only material recovery that separates PyroCore’s technology from conventional thermal waste treatment as the Phoenix also captures 40 to 50% of the carbon in the char as opposed to being released. Moreover, he stressed that Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is an integral part of the industry’s move towards net-zero. Adding that, the Phoenix has the capability to trap carbon in solid form and produce biochars for use in agricultural remediation.
Based in their new Avonmouth headquarters,
Demonstrating and supporting a circular economy, we spoke to Alexander Van Heuverswyn, about the benefits PyroCore delivers to its customers. He answered, “Besides our elaborated waste testing capabilities, which make us unique, the fact we propose a flexible solution to a specific waste problem is what differentiates us from the rest. A solution which focuses on increasing the circularity and reaching the netzero carbon commitments of the customer.” These benefits are a great way to increase income whilst enabling companies to save time and money and improve their overall brand values.

With no two projects ever the same, Leachate Solutions have developed a versatile and flexible way of working that ensures every client requirement can be met to the highest standard and within the agreed deadline. A new recent development for the company sees them active in a brand-new sector of ‘contaminated water clean-up’ to which it has never entered before.
Carl explained, “We are currently developing a treatment plant for a demolition company. They are demolishing old gasometers on the South West Gas network. Some of them are over 100 years old and are full of contaminated water. This water, some 6.5million litres, has to be cleaned up prior to discharge into a public sewer. So we have made certain adaptations to our standard treatment plant in order to filter out Hydro-Carbons and suspended solids to meet the discharge consent. The first is due to be delivered to their site in Plymouth on March 31st.” Jane added, “It’s an additional service, an
add-on if you will to what we currently do that will feed into a number of other sectors and be a service that we can offer to many clients. This project has gone from a phone call concept to a design and delivery within six weeks. We worked closely with our client to deliver what they needed within their tight time frame.”
With the current state of the economic climate and delays to sourcing and delivery of specific equipment, this has been a fantastic achievement for Leachate Solutions and speaks volumes for its undeniable commitment to excellence, due in no small part to the excellent relationships held within their supplier network, including Pumping Solutions (UK) and their superb Service providers, JPR Engineering in Burscough.
Leachate Solutions delivers the highest standards that are both ethically and theoretically correct. They work alongside Dr Mike Fischer, Technical Director and Company Scientist at Biochemit Environmental Ltd, who advises on the chemistry that is involved in each project. From this, customers can be assured that everything Leachate Solutions delivers has a proven theory behind it and is according to industry standards. The flexibility of Leachate Solutions is undeniably one of its strengths, as the requirements of its clients are always changing. By utilising the latest technology where available and injecting their years of technical know-how and expertise, the process of stripping dissolved methane from water and leachate discharges through their treatment System, is now seen as Best Available Technology (BAT) as it creates a more efficient, safe and compliant discharge and
is a service that is completely unrivalled and unique within their field.
Going forward, we asked Jane what the company’s plans for the future entail, she responded, “We will continue to develop solutions that run-in line with our customers’ needs. We will continue growing organically and at a pace that is attainable, not rushing into anything. We will also be looking to expand our workforce over the next year to accommodate for our growth.”
Carl added, “It’s always a positive to receive such awards in the industry and to be recognised for all our hard work. As a company, we embrace new technologies and put into them what we already know, and that’s why we come highly recommended by all of our clients. Our solutions offer strong environmental benefits to the planet and to the customers business, and receiving this award gives us a great platform to talk about it.”

Contamination & Geotech Expo Review – Top Exhibitors
Contamination & Geotech Expo 2021
The organisers couldn’t be prouder with the result of the long-awaited 2021 edition of The Contamination & Geotech Expo. They would like to thank the visitors who came to support the event. The event took place on 22-23 September at the NEC, Birmingham, connecting the industry once again after a challenging 18+ months. Alongside this, the contamination, geotechnical and environmental industries already find themselves in an ever-changing environment, from government legislation to new projects and the increasing threat of climate change.
It was clear that the industry was revelling in the opportunity to reconnect and meet face-to-face once again to connect with industry peers and prospective business connections. The exhibitors, sponsors, speakers, partners, and of course the attendees at the Contamination & Geotech Expo are vital for the industry's continued development through innovation, collaboration and knowledge sharing –making it the most important 2 days in the calendar for contamination, geotechnical and environmental professionals.
Covering all aspects of land, water, and air
contamination, insight and learning were high on the agenda with the 7 specialised zones and a seminar programme full of expert-led CPD accredited sessions, panels, and demonstrations.

Acoem UK
Acoem UK’s core purpose is to help our customers find the right balance between progress and preservation – protecting businesses and assets, and maximising opportunities while respecting the planet’s resources. Human activity does not have to get in the way of protecting the environment, nor do sustainable practices have to get in the way of human activity. We offer products and services that prevent and control air, noise and vibration pollution, increase the productivity and reliability of industrial machinery & contribute to
the development of effective, robust & noiseless products.
According to the UN, net zero means we are not adding new emissions to the atmosphere. Emissions will continue but will be balanced by absorbing an equivalent amount from the atmosphere.
We signed the Pledge to Net Zero which means that we will set and commit to a science based carbon reduction target, publicly reporting our emissions
and progress against this target. The challenge is real and our hope is that by documenting our journey, we can help other businesses to begin.

Natural and biodegradable coir-based solutions for erosion control
At CoirProducts.co.uk (of Salike Limited), we provide a range of sustainable, coir-based solutions for soil erosion control. Our products are natural and biodegradable, and ethically produced and sourced, with minimal harm on the environment.
Made out of the natural fibres extracted from the husk of the coconut, our products include coir geotextiles, coir blankets, coir logs, coir pallets, and coir sheets. Coir geotextiles (coir netting) can be used in the form of a vegetated cover to help prevent soil erosion, and for soil stabilisation and
soil reinforcement. Coir logs or coir rolls can help prevent the disintegration of slopes, riverbanks, shorelines, and other such inclined territories.
Coir logs are made of coir that is trapped inside a biodegradable coir twine or PP netting to form a log shaped structure, while coir sheets consist of layers of fibre with a natural rubber latex layer added on to it to hold the fibre together. Our coir blankets can be used to help control wind erosion on slopes and in wetland environments. The products are durable, given
the strong tensile strength of coir fibre, while they are also useful for vegetation. Sizes can also be customised to meet individual requirements.

Company of the Year
Tusker, Sustainability Today’s Company of the Year
Following a year of exceptional results in its core business of the provision of environmentally conscious salary sacrifice car benefits schemes, and in recognition of its outstanding commitment to the environment, we are delighted to announce Tusker as our Company of the Year for 2022.
Specialising in the provision of salary sacrifice car schemes for companies of all sizes, Tusker continues to make a positive environmental impact both for the drivers and companies it serves, thanks to its stellar record in carbon neutrality since 2010.
Earlier this year, Tusker went further still, announcing it had become a net-positive contributor to the environment by offsetting more carbon than they were responsible for, and had surpassed the milestone of offsetting more than 250,000 tonnes of carbon via Verified Carbon Standard programmes.
Furthermore, from 2022 onwards, Tusker has expanded its carbon offsetting to include the emissions produced through the charging of its EVs, which are calculated using UK grid averages. By using the ‘worst case scenario’ emissions in these calculations, Tusker is ensuring that it offsets appropriately for all EV customers and not just those on green energy tariffs.
Paul Gilshan, Tusker’s CEO, was delighted to receive the award on behalf of the company.
“Ensuring the sustainability of our choices as a business has been a cornerstone of Tusker’s operations since 2009; it’s at the heart of everything we do. In championing the benefits of salary sacrifice as the most economical means of EV adoption right from the start, we are proud to have made a substantial difference to the employee benefits landscape, helping the UK’s drivers into new, affordable, and environmentally friendly vehicles. For many of our drivers it’s the first time they’ve driven a brand new car, let alone an EV, as the average age of the vehicle they move from is over 8 years old.
“This award comes in the same month in which we have announced that we are on course to achieve Net Zero by 2023, a full seven years ahead of the national target and that we have also surpassed the milestone of offsetting more than 250,000 tonnes of carbon emissions while doing so. To be awarded Company of the Year by Sustainability Today is a testament to our ongoing commitment to the environment and it’s an award of which we are very proud.
“Whether an employee salary sacrifice car
scheme or a more traditional company fleet, we offer a full range of leasing services to companies of all sizes, including contract hire and daily rental options. While we have always offered unrivalled individual benefits, Tusker is also the only company to offset tailpipe emissions AND all emissions produced by our EV drivers who may not have access to green tariffs for charging.
“We do this using the Verified Carbon Standard offsetting project, which ensures measurable carbon offsetting, recorded by internationally recognised bodies. We offer this offset as standard across our contracts, whether for EV, hybrid, or ICE vehicles. With Tusker, drivers can be confident that their carbon neutrality is guaranteed, and that it’s not just a case of corporate grandstanding.
“This recognition of Tusker’s sustainability profile marks a tremendous achievement for the company, it is one which we believe goes unrivalled within the leasing industry. As a proudly carbon positive contributor to the environment, a member of the EV100 group of companies and a founding partner of World EV Day in 2020, we are pleased to have helped some of the UK’s major fleet owners significantly
lower their emissions through our innovative schemes. We count large blue-chip companies such as EQUANS, British Airways, EDF and Astra Zeneca among our customers, as well as hundreds of other smaller businesses. There is no fleet too big or too small to gain from a car benefits package.
“While the EV revolution is underway amongst our customers, we are very aware that an electric car may not be the best possible solution for every driver. To ensure that no one is ever in a vehicle that is unsuitable for their needs, we have a team of independent, impartial experts on hand to review car choices with every single customer. We know that some people still aren’t ready or able to go electric, but as we still cover these motorists through our carbon offsetting program so everyone can be assured that they are motoring sustainably. On top of this, for those new to EVs, the same team is on hand to help customers better understand batteries, charging and range options, to take any possible stress or confusion out of their first foray into driving electric.
“When it comes to Salary Sacrifice schemes, the numbers don’t lie, we currently have a fleet of more than 20,000 cars, of which more than 95% are on salary sacrifice schemes. We work with more than 900 organisations across the UK, including NHS Trusts, local authorities, and corporations of all sizes. In the 14 years since
we launched the car scheme, we have replaced more than 60,000 older, more polluting vehicles with newer, cleaner and more environmentally sustainable vehicles and in the last two years, our fleet has been predominantly made up of EVs.
“Thanks to the innovative nature of salary sacrifice which means that every driver is able to benefit from monthly savings whatever their tax bracket, 70% of our fleet is made up of 20% tax payers. We are proud to be enabling those who might previously have been excluded from more traditional company car schemes, such as nurses and administrators, to access new and affordable vehicles. It’s helping to level up drivers into EVs. We now see more and more ‘cash for car’ drivers taking advantage of salary sacrifice too, because it offers them a fixed price, inclusive car, enabling motorists to take better control of their monthly costs with no surprises.
“We will use this award as a sign of our commitment, and to bolster our ongoing resolve to achieving our Net Zero targets, while we continue to help drivers enjoy a more affordable, safer and sustainable way of motoring.”

Paul Gilshan, CEO, Tusker
It's fair to say that a successful business is one that is always striving to be more efficient, therefore making the best efforts to improve their bottom line. Efficiency can be easily achieved in many forms, required personnel, transport and indeed the equipment to get the job done.
With costs at an all-time high and the introduction of tough new government fuel laws in 2022 the time has never been more right to make the switch to sustainable electric powered crushing.
Family-owned ROCO have put their 40 years of vast crushing experience to good use over the last 2 years and developed the very impressive RYDER 1000 Hybrid powered jaw crusher. This first in class 29t diesel electric super-sized permit free RYDER 1000 ticks all the boxes when it comes to size, performance and efficiency. Customers are offered the Dual-Powered build as standard. This means they have the option to power the crusher via fuel or 100% electric mains power.
The RYDER utilises an onboard CAT generator which is unbeatable in the 30t category when it
comes to fuel burn. Strenuous tests have been carried out over the last 2 years via Finnings-UK in hard rock quarries to various recycling centres and mixed material applications. The average fuel burn per working hour in Recycling was only 10 litres per hour and an average of just 15 litres per hour in natural virgin aggregates. This is on average a 40% fuel savings in comparison to typical diesel hydraulic driven crushers.
It doesn't end there; customers now have the option to plug the RYDER into their onsite mains electric power supply and no longer burn any fuel whatsoever as the RYDER is 100% electric driven. This in return offers the customer a crusher that not only can now work indoors in a recycling centre but also ideally suited to work on the end of a washing plant for crushing the oversize product with minimal running costs. While using
Crushing & Screening
onsite electric supply the business can cut out daily engine checks, re-fuelling, dust issues/air filters while not burning any fuel and creating a much safer environment for staff to work in that is free from carbon monoxide.
Using electric power also improves the residual value of your crusher dramatically as no hours are being clocked on your engine and with a separate hour meter installed to the crusher you are sure to monitor the plant with ease.
All Roco RYDER 1000 crushers are built with FULL spec as standard so no extra hidden costs or paying extra for the electric plug-in option. The crushing plant also boasts super advantages over its rivals with its 180-degree radial conveyor which has the option to install a pre-screen mesh to regulate a second product. Furthermore, it has a dual directional powerful
overband magnet combined with a very generous 1,000mm wide discharge conveyor meaning it is sure to maximise the recovery of steel ferrous metal from your crushed product. Roco's crushing experience can really be seen when it comes to maintenance and access to all service-related areas. There is a massive 600mm clearance underneath the crushing chamber combined with a deflector plate to cater for Recycled material. The discharge conveyor also lowers down via hydraulic cylinders for any visual or maintenance requirements. Fixed, trouble free hopper with wear liners and 5 cubic metre capacity also means the RYDER is the ideal size for wheel loader or excavator feed.
With a big global push to go Green the time is right to take advantage of the UK’s lucrative tax incentives while also avoiding rising fuel costs, more importantly invest in a sustainable crusher that will hold a much better residual valve over its less desired hydraulic driven rivals in the years ahead.

Debuting at the Cleaning Show back in 2021, BenchGuard® was pleased to offer an eco-friendly bamboo, fully biodegradable wet cleaning wipe & dry roll – making them the perfect greener alternative to the more commonly plastic based wet wipes.
Not only are they better for the planet, being made from bamboo, but are fully biodegradable, meaning 0% sitting in landfill. They are superb at cleaning over multiple areas and the dry rolls are even re-useable, after drying out like a cloth. Both are super absorbent, and you can literally ‘squeeze’ and start again. The wet wipes are 99.9% anti-bacterial, which reduces the use of other cleaning products, meaning they are fully sustainable, and last longer than usual rolls.

Top delivery handover tips for new EV car owners
Based on his own experiences, Nick Chadaway (pictured), managing director of DMN Logistics, provides his ‘delivery handover advice’ to first time EV buyers.
Here are a few tips I recommend new EV drivers keep in mind during the handover:
● Before the delivery of your new vehicle, write down any questions you have about the car to ask the delivery driver – they will most likely be able to answer your questions due to their familiarity with the vehicle.
● Ask about the basic differences in driving an ICE to an EV. The answer should help you feel more confident in driving it for the first time.
● Ask about charging. The driver can demonstrate the ‘handshake’ between the plug and the car so the customer is aware of the
correct technique to use to ensure efficient charging and no delays.
● Ask about any software included in the car to help with driving efficiency. Most cars will have these, and although prior to buying, the customer will have read about them, they may not have seen how they work in real-life. End users should ask for a demonstration to gain a better understanding.
● To help deter range anxiety, ask questions about range. The driver will be able to inform the end user of ‘typical’ mileage on a certain percentage of charge. It is also a good idea to ask about eco-mode and how this improves range.

Housing Safety and Wellbeing Taskforce launched
We are pleased to announce the official launch of the Housing Safety & Wellbeing Taskforce, which due to Covid-19 precautions, took place online on the 13th January 2022.
We were delighted to be joined by Sir Peter Bottomley MP, who introduced the initiative and paid tribute to the late Sir David Amess MP, who had lent us valued support during our original planning phase.
The Housing Safety & Wellbeing Taskforce will bring together partners from the public, private, and charitable sector across all nations of the UK to discuss the key issues involved in creating safer homes and making recommendations for action.
There will be six strands to the work of the Taskforce, each with their own ‘Ambassador’ to lead the discussions and co-ordinate activity: Health & Wellbeing, Net Zero & Decarbonisation, Resident Engagement, Housing Quality, Fire & Carbon Monoxide Safety, and Fuel Poverty. These ambassadors were announced at our launch event and are drawn from the housing, fire service, and academic sectors. They will be actively encouraging participation from
any interested parties. Please check our website to find out more and get in touch with us directly if you would like to be involved: www.hswtaskforce.org.uk
At our launch event, the Housing Safety & Wellbeing Taskforce has unveiled a study from CEBR (Centre for Economics & Business Research) which is a seminal piece of research, combining a statistical analysis of fire incidence across the UK, a summary of the relevant legislation, and a holistic examination of the human and economic impact of fire, based on official data and a specially commissioned YouGov survey.
The study delves into recent dwelling fires and demonstrates that the rate of reduction in fire incidents, running in tandem with new regulations, has slowed in recent years. With estimated annual costs of residential fires now exceeding £1billion, the research then goes on to examine in detail the potential impact and cost savings associated with tighter restrictions. www.hswtaskforce.org.uk

Lakeland ChemMax ‘Super-B’: The Ultimate in Chemical Hazmat Clothing
How comfortable is your chemical suit?
The critical factor influencing comfort is fabric breathability. Unfortunately, a quality suit that gives you effective protection against nasty chemicals uses a barrier fabric that keeps out dangerous substances but also keeps out air!
The good news? Design of a suit also has an important effect on comfort. And the even better news is Lakeland’s Super-B style chemical suits are designed with comfort –as well as protection – in mind.
Lakeland’s ChemMax chemical protective clothing uses our ‘Super-B’ style coverall. A unique combination of design elements and additional features that result in a better fitting, more durable and more comfortable
garment:
● 3-piece hood, crotch gusset and inset sleeves means a better fitting suit that creates less stress in critical areas
● Double zip and storm flap means a secure protection to the important front of the garment
● Cushioned knee-pads as standard mean a safer, tougher and more secure suit for more strenuous applications where kneeling, crawling or climbing is required.
ChemMax Super-B style is the ultimate in chemical protective workwear. To discover more read our blog at the address below (or use the QR code in the image) and request a free ChemMax sample.

role that products like ours play in helping medics reduce risk. In situations such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, infection can take hold and sweep through communities when they are at their most vulnerable. Providing refugees with basic essentials and arming the medical teams and volunteers with the necessary equipment to help keep people safe is crucial. The scenes from Ukraine are truly heart-breaking. In our line of work, we're fortunate to be able to directly help those in need. We hope these essential medical supplies will go some way to lessen their suffering during
their time of crisis.” The donation was arranged in coordination with the organisation Recycling Lives, whose social value programme is helping to tackle food poverty and reduce food waste. The appeal will see multiple lorry loads sent to Poland, where the donations will then be broken down to be distributed to the areas on the border to help the communities and refugees.

With rising energy costs, heating domestic and commercial properties is proving to be a major strain on the household purse and in business operations. The household purse is being strained to the point of eat or heat. Business owners are accruing greater costs impacting their services and products which is further having an adverse effect on all supply chains.
Given all this negativity, help is available in the form of an innovative patented technology. Hydro Genie is a retrofit solution that can be installed on any wet heating system; this includes electricity, gas, oil, LPG, and can be incorporated into existing heat pump or renewable thermal systems.
The Hydro Genie technology is based partly on Henry’s Law of Physics where it removes dissolved gases from the circulating heating fluid. Once the gasses are removed the fluid dynamics within the Hydro Genie technology provides compression and vacuum which lifts the exiting fluid in temperature by 2-3 degrees.
Auto-Pack: FFS Solutions
Auto-Pack has been supplying the widest range of FFS solutions available in the UK for over 10 years. We pride ourselves on the depth of knowledge we have across FFS sachet, stick pack, bag and pouch machines and the range of applications.
The sachet machine range includes both horizontal and vertical sachet machines from the budget MH110 through to the larger MH140 and MH170 all of which are available in single or duplex versions, additional options are available such as easy open tear notches, Euroslot, shaped sachets and reclosable zips. Traditionally the most common applications are for sauces, dressings and condiments, powder/granular seasonings, and spices however in the last few years there has been a growth in whey protein drinks & other powdered beverages.
This lift in temperature is then measured by the Energy Genie Controller which uses that enhanced heat to control the boiler and put it in to economising mode. This culminates in an enhanced heat modification, which results in reduced fuel consumption, and reduces the carbon being emitted from the building.

Across every industry, manufacturers are working to meet growing customer demand in a globally competitive market
Despite a widening skills gap, by organising advanced technology into highly optimised work cells, manufacturers are maximising productivity through automation.
Specialised equipment, like a deep-hole drilling system, often is challenging to integrate, which quickly can create production schedule bottlenecks. To eliminate the risk, shops that perform deep-hole drilling should seek out OEMs that understand the needs of high-production manufacturers and have the capabilities to bring technology into the factories and work cells of the future.
Deep-hole drilling systems, which can produce holes that exceed a 20-1 depth-to-diameter ratio, are a unique class of manufacturing equipment because of the focused tasks they conduct. An increasing number of machining centres boast deep-hole drilling capabilities, but these machines simply cannot operate at needed speeds, particularly for parts that require exceptionally high accuracy.
Manufacturers that must perform deep-hole drilling capable of rapid production and high throughput should instead select machines designed for the task.
Automating holemaking
These shops increasingly opt for deephole drilling systems that also work with automation. In a typical deep-hole drilling work cell configuration, such as one for producing rifle receivers or automotive shafts, the
equipment can use automation to time its cycle completion to mesh with other production processes. For straightforward automation, conveyors and pick-and-place robots move and position parts for deep-hole drilling with exacting repeatability and accuracy while automatic toolchangers, doors and inspection stations keep parts moving swiftly into, out of and around the cell.
Because deep-hole drilling tends to apply to long, cylindrically shaped parts, workpiece configuration eases or complicates some aspects of automating load-in and load-out cycles tied to drilling operations. Workholding axes, for example, can provide automatic part gripping with pneumatic or hydraulic chucks operated through advanced controls for deep-hole drilling systems. In this configuration, machines can pick up a part, drill it and set it back down on a conveyor or part collection area. In deep-hole drilling systems themselves, specialised designs also offer automatic chucking, while robottending systems can add further flexibility with end-of-arm tooling, workholding and measuring systems.
As the automation configuration grows more complicated, however, manufacturers require an OEM that can act as a collaborative partner to find available solutions or engineer individualised products for unique applications or production lines. Shops that depend on deep-hole drilling as part of a high-production environment should seek a partner that has a demonstrated record of working directly with manufacturers to modernise processes and create robust automated work cells.
Gundrilling application
UNISIG, for instance, worked with a manufacturer of rifle barrel receivers to help it accommodate growing demand and relieve production bottlenecks. The manufacturer’s older gundrilling machines were replaced by a multiplespindle machine, the UNI25HD. It had the power and controls necessary to apply indexable gundrilling tools, significantly improving feed rates.
To enable fast one-piece-flow manufacturing, UNISIG integrated the system via automation for in-feed, pickand-place, conveyor loading and automatic clamping, which fed two lathes that turned the parts. The result was an effective work cell that produced more than 100 parts an hour, a dramatic financial and process improvement.
The viability of automated deep-hole drilling production can depend on tool life and part length.
At extreme depths, for example, some parts require more than one set of inserts to produce a completed hole, and the high level of hardness of some workpiece materials causes rapid tool wear. To overcome this challenge, UNISIG programs its machines to detect wear and predict when a tool will reach its breaking point, allowing operators to prevent a failure that could stop the line.
For further process efficiency, deep-hole drilling machines should have either a CNC or programmable logic controller. Both can integrate with other control systems & interface with a controller in the work cell. Systems such as a fully automated barrel cell are capable of unmanned, lights-out production with efficient programming. Deep-hole drilling equipment’s application-specific configurations suit the production of parts that necessitate techniques and processes that go beyond the easy capabilities of general-purpose equipment. In years past, many manufacturers thought of this kind of specialized equipment as old-fashioned and a drag on production. But with the right equipment – and a partner with the right engineering and applications expertise – deep-hole drilling in work cells can keep up with the productive factory environment that manufacturers need to succeed.
Further information on all machines of the B Series and the complete UNISIG machine program is available at: www.unisig.de or follow the company on LinkedIn and Twitter (@UNISIG).

Component Manufacturing Company of the Year
Micrometric introduces a new comprehensive precision component manufacturing service to the market
In this issue of Business and Industry Today, we are proud to announce that we have selected Micrometric as the recipient of our Component Manufacturing Company of the Year.
Established by Dr Maurice Gates in 1981, Micrometric specialises in the laser material processing of metals providing contract and subcontract manufacturing services to produce highquality fast turn-around components that are used by international businesses from large blue-chip companies to local SMEs. You’ll find Micrometric active across industries such as aerospace, automotive energy, medical device manufacturing, oil and gas, engineering, and electronics industrial sectors.
Providing a wide range of equipment alongside a large network of sub-contractors, Micrometric is a one-stop-shop for all components ranging from laser cutting only to a multi-process that requires laser cutting, forming, precision grinding, forming and heat treatment, most of which its competitors cannot match.
Today, Micrometric has built a reputation for providing a reliable and friendly service which is why many of its customers stay with the company for many years. With the effects of COVID-19 very much still looming, we asked Chris Waters, Commercial Director at Micrometric, how the last 12 months have been for the company. Chris responded, “The past 12 months have been uncertain. We have sustained production, but it has taken a lot of hard work improving everything we do. We have seen a big change in our customers, I would say probably 50% of our top 20 customers have been replaced by new or smaller existing customers increasing their purchases. Because of this, sales have been better than our forecast.”
In terms of the company’s recent developments, COVID-19 has forced Micrometric to reconsider its services and look at how best they can be utilised
to help customers. As part of its current portfolio, Micrometric offer laser cutting, laser welding, laser drilling, laser etching, tube cutting, precision machining, reverse engineering, and multi-process services.
Lasers are the single most important aspect of the business at Micrometric as they enable it to cut, drill, etch and weld, to supply customers with precision parts that meet their needs. Micrometric has firmly established itself in the industry for having laser capabilities that fully meet the requirements of the customer whilst optimising the production process to achieve the best results.
Lasers are used in Micrometric’s engineering processes daily as they offer precision and accuracy that enables the company to create items for all industries to the highest quality.
To complement its already sterling portfolio of services, Micrometric now offer a comprehensive precision component, manufacturing service. “We are able to offer our customers a complete service that ensures our core competence is in precision parts. It also means they don't have to deal with multiple sub-contractors,” said Chris.
From this, Micrometric has significantly invested in precision lasers over the past few years that include Rofin Starcut which enables the user to cut tubes from 0.5mm diameter up to 30mm diameter to tolerances of ±0.025mm, a Trumpf Trulaser Station 2005 with a Trudisk 1000 laser source that
enables fast finer laser welding, and its most recent purchase, a IPG Lasercube for cutting of precision components with tolerances of ±0.025mm. Overall, these additions enable a faster service that allows Micrometric to be more competitive and effective within this specific field.
Chris went on to explain some of the benefits that this newly added service provides for its customers. “As a result of this we are able to offer our customers a single source of supply of competitively priced precision components. We are a supplier that likes to work with our customers especially in product development. Customers can call on our 40 years of experience in producing difficult parts that others would not attempt. We are recognised within our industry and get a lot of referrals for this reason.”
Going forward, Micrometric has developed some short-term and long-term plans to ensure its focus remains solely on the key factors that ensure the company’s success. “The pandemic forced us to look at ourselves and how we work. We were carried through the first year of the pandemic by a long tail of work and new opportunities. For us, the pandemic started to bite in 2021 so we sat down and came up with a plan,” Chris continued, “short term, we reorganised the business to give much more focus on the key success factors which are team development, team communication, quote turnaround time, delivery on time and development of our team. Medium term, we looked at strengthening our capabilities with identifying our next capital purchase. Short to long-term, we focused on increasing our marketing activities to attract new customers with a focus on the medical sector. We understand this is more of a long-term goal as we know it can take a long time to establish relationships within certain medical supply chains.”
In the future Micrometric is happy to keep on its current growth trajectory within the market by continuing to invest further in its people as they are deemed as essential to the company’s success. By further investing in its capabilities, this will help improve and broaden what it can offer while also putting a large emphasis on those customers who are looking for more from their current suppliers.
In closing, we asked Chris how the company felt receiving the award, he commented. “We are delighted to have received this award. It recognises the hard work that the team at Micrometric have put in to achieving this success. We could not have achieved this without the whole team working together.”
