Dear members, prospective members and industry colleagues.
Three months into 2024 already, where has that gone?! I’d love to say that time flies when we’re having fun but with ongoing uncertainty in the market and wider economy, all I am hearing about is depressed sales. On the brighter side, spring is now upon us and the grass is shooting which always kicks off sales –particularly for mowers and tractors. Sales from stock are good for cash flow, so let’s hope we all have the right kit in stock!
Hamilton Park in Scotland. There will be a full report on this in the next edition. This was the first of many BAGMA events this year, including the return of our golf day at Nailcote Hall in September. Watch out for more details on this, and information on how to book very soon.

Bandit UK Ltd join BAGMA
Bandit UK have recently joined BAGMA to help garden and agricultural machinery dealers protect their businesses.
As we are all too aware, hand-held garden machinery has become very desirable for criminals recently. Bandit UK is an accredited supplier of security fogging solutions, providing valuable protection for stock, employees and the business premises.
Bandit UK Ltd was established in 2004 and are the exclusive distributor for Fog Bandit security fogging systems in the UK and Ireland. Manufactured and assembled in Europe, the Fog Bandit security system was designed and launched in 1998 and is now established as the market leader. Fog Bandit systems are widely used 24/7 to protect a large spectrum of assets across financial institutions, bullion and cash processing, retail, warehouse distribution, agricultural, leisure and public sectors.
What can’t be seen can’t be stolen!
Backed up with clear deterrent warning signs, high speed security fog by Fog Bandit provides a deterrent against out of hours burglary risk, and where applicable daytime robbery or ‘smash and grab’ threat at garden machinery stores, agricultural storage facilities and machinery workshops.
When sensors detect an intruder (overnight protection) the Fog Bandit’s patented high-pressure system instantly delivers a dense, visually impenetrable yet harmless fog at a rate of 30 cubic metres per second, projecting it 6 metres in the first 2 seconds alone. An average sized store, workshop, or showroom of 280 cubic metres takes under 10 seconds to fill.
Protection is achieved by filling the entire area with impenetrable fog where valuable stock, equipment and other contents can be obscured from sight, protecting them from the possibility of theft or damage, until the authorities arrive. Considerable cost, time and effort can be saved, disruption to business is reduced to a minimum and normal trading can be quickly resumed.
The benefits of installing a Fog Bandit
• The FASTEST way to help protect business assets from theft
• Dual function 24/7 protection
• Protects against the possibility of internal damage to property
• Helps keep insurance loss claims to a minimum
• Deters intruders from further attempts
• Fog is harmless and leaves no residue, safe to use in any environment
We are able to assist BAGMA members who are interested in protecting their business with free site surveys and where appropriate, a live demonstration of the Fog Bandit.

Agricultural trailers on the public highway: Is it time for trailer tests and licensing?
This was the very direct question posed by a seminar held at the 2024 LAMMA Show on 17th January.
Dr Andy Scarlett - BAGMA ATTS trainer - was in the audience.
by Toby Whatley (Farmer’s Guardian machinery editor), the discussion panel included Andy Newbold (Newmac Ltd – machinery safety consultants), Mike Sumner (agricultural vehicle road legislation specialist), Mark Longmore (BPW Ltd – trailer axle and suspension manufacturer) and
Wilkinson (mixed farmer and Farmer’s Guardian contributor). Current practice vs current road vehicle legislation?
Delegates agreed that current GB agricultural vehicle road regulations are out-dated and don’t accommodate modern tractors and trailers or typical operating practices. Tractors can now travel faster on-road and the trailers towed are larger and heavier. On-road usage is also often more intense. Many of the trailers displayed at LAMMA cannot be operated legally at their rated capacities within current GB regulations. Similarly, modern (50 km/h – 30 mph) tractors cannot be driven legally at their maximum design speed. The world has moved on, but agricultural vehicle legislation has not. It was agreed that this problem needs to be addressed in a responsible and professional way. The design and safety of the equipment has improved, but the industry requires options for regulated operation and heavier and/or faster equipment. Regular roadworthiness testing and enhanced (vehicle and/or driver) licensing may be necessary to permit this.
Agricultural trailer type-approval
Most countries in Europe require new agricultural trailers to be typeapproved prior to sale, to demonstrate their braking systems satisfy relevant performance requirements. There is no such requirement in the UK. Mark Longmore (BPW) considered that new agricultural trailers should clearly show they can satisfy UK road regulations for their intended speed of operation, when first sold to the customer: thereafter responsibility for maintenance and roadworthiness compliance passes to the customer.
Maintaining and demonstrating agricultural vehicle roadworthiness
Some believed that the general public would be shocked to learn that agricultural vehicles do not require MOT (roadworthiness) inspections and that, unlike tractors, agricultural trailer braking systems are not tested/approved prior to sale. Delegates agreed that ensuring vehicle roadworthiness was important and a statutory requirement. However, it was considered that MOTtype testing for agricultural trailers would only be appropriate for larger/ heavier vehicles and/or those used more intensively on-road. Delegates agreed that roadworthiness testing of trailers in isolation would be insufficient. The tractors which tow them must also be inspected/
tested, given that the tractor controls the trailer’s braking system.
It was explained that an AEA/BAGMA/ NFU/NAAC consortium had previously developed a proposal with government, by which heavier tractor-trailer combinations could be operated if subjected to voluntary, annual roadworthiness inspection and brake testing - based on HGV test criteria. Vehicles operated within the existing speed and weight limits would not have required testing. Unfortunately whilst this was not implemented, it has since formed the basis of the BAGMA Agricultural Tractor Trailer Scheme (ATTS).
Driver competence: Training and licensing
The availability of suitably-skilled staff and, perhaps more importantly, the absence of appropriate training/ development pathways for young drivers to gain the competence to operate modern, large agricultural machinery, were seen as major issues. It was felt that agricultural colleges generally do not provide students with the necessary training to operate such equipment.
The current Category F (tractor) driving test was widely regarded as not fit-forpurpose. Concern was expressed that a Category B (car) driving test did not satisfy the practical requirements to operate modern, large tractor-trailer combinations.

6 BAGMA BULLETIN - MARCH-APRIL 2024
Fast tractor? Heavy trailer? - How many are ‘pushing’ the (legal) limits?
However, it was widely accepted that HGV (truck) driver licensing requirements and HGV operating hours restrictions would be inappropriate for agriculture. Rather that some form of middle ground is perhaps required.
Some countries have two levels of driver licensing for agricultural vehicles. The size and/or max speed of vehicle which may be driven is limited until a more demanding test is passed: often for vehicles above 40 km/h (25 mph). Many considered a different test / licensing for drivers of faster tractors had merit and would enable the agricultural sector to demonstrate professionalism and driver competence to other road users.
Some others thought this would be an unnecessary headache and that responsibility for provision of adequate training and ensuring driver competence should remain with the employer and need not be enforced by licensing. However, it was agreed that many, particularly arable farms, simply don’t have less demanding tasks and/or smaller equipment on which novice operators can gain experience.
Suitable on-farm training pathways frequently no longer exist. A gap exists in the industry to provide appropriate training. A regulated requirement to complete such driver training, either to demonstrate competence or to pass an enhanced (faster) agricultural vehicle driving test, may perhaps provide a solution to this problem?
Conclusions
• Current GB agricultural vehicle road regulations are out-dated: they don’t permit the legal use of modern tractors and trailers or typical agricultural operating practices
• The agricultural sector does not want to operate outside of the law
• To achieve regulatory change, to permit legal operation of larger/heavier and faster vehicles, the agricultural sector must demonstrate professionalism in:-
- the design and roadworthiness of the vehicles they operate on-road
- the level of competence of vehicle drivers
BAGMA Agricultural Tractor Trailer Scheme (ATTS)
• Vehicle roadworthiness inspection and brake testing in a single package
• Specifically developed for agricultural vehicles
- Based on DVSA HGV test criteria

An Introduction to BAGMA Installation training
Ian Mitchell runs High Five Training, a dedicated machinery operator and sales skills training business based in Ipswich, Suffolk and has delivered the BAGMA Installation Training Course to dealers, manufacturers and end users across the UK for over 20 years. Here Ian reviews the course and the benefits it delivers to dealer staff and their customers.
Every course begins with asking the antendees what benefits they believe good machinery installation will bring, with their answers then reviewed within the group.
Typically, the following key points come up in every session.
Performance: Operators who understand how to use the machinery will get more out of it.
Safety: Operators who know how to set the machinery up correctly should have fewer incidents and accidents.
Maintenance: Operators who know how to maintain the machinery correctly are more likely to look after it better.
Reliability: Machines that are well maintained should also be more reliable.
Relationships: Spending some time installing new machinery with the customer should enhance the existing relationship with the dealer. It also, often, provides the opportunity to meet other people within the organisation, who might be useful contacts in the future.
Repeat business: Reliability and good performance are key factors in winning repeat business with any customer. It is also essential for retaining the business
of existing customers.
These are all very positive reasons and reaffirm the importance of correctly installing machinery with any customer. There are also reasons to have this training in place in the event of something going wrong.
Legislation and Litigation: In the event of an accident, it is important to be able to prove that systematic instruction was carried out, using an approved system, with suitable records kept by qualified staff. That’s why the BAGMA scheme is an approved code of practice (ACOP). It’s very important to keep all customer facing staff up to date and recertified as required.
How it works
The course is made up of a simple 20-point process, covering all the key areas that can be applied to all types of machinery – from a hand-held hedge cutter through to a combine harvester.
BAGMA TRAINING
8 BAGMA BULLETIN - MARCH-APRIL 2024
You just have to pull the right information out of the operator’s handbook and either explain or show it to the customer.
It is important that those attending the course make sure they have read the operators instruction book and fully understand what all the controls do, and how to use them. You will also need to be aware of all the daily checks, basic adjustments & maintenance procedures.
includes role play sessions, which give participants an opportunity to put what they’ve learned into practice and see how others handle the same situation.
With such a varied list of training objectives, this course will impart many key skills to people of all levels within your organisation – a salesperson, demonstrator or a delivery driver. The ability to talk about the product with confidence should become second nature and this course will get everyone focused on how to do just that.
Knowing this information is one thing, but being able to present this to the customer is a key skill. Our training The

Key employment law changes for 2024
by Mark O’Donnell WorkNest
There are several employment law changes on the horizon this year that BAGMA members should be aware of.
Holiday pay
From 1st January, employers will be able to legally use the 12.07% holiday pay calculation again for part-year staff and irregular hours workers. Those same atypical workers can also be paid rolledup holiday pay, meaning employers can just add those workers’ holiday pay entitlement to their normal wages.
Record-keeping will also become less exacting, as employers will no longer be required to maintain an account of each of their staff members’ daily working and rest hours. Adequate records must still be kept to demonstrate compliance with regulations.
Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006 (TUPE)
Employers with fewer than 50 staff or any employer involved in a transfer of fewer than 10 employees will no longer be automatically required to elect representatives for TUPE transfers. Employers should, however, still adhere to any contractual obligations they have in this area.
Enhanced employee rights
BAGMA members should also be alert to forthcoming enhanced rights for employees:
• Flexible working laws is to be broadened to allow staff to make two requests a year
• Discrimination law will be refined to give staff greater protection against harassment and forms of unfavourable treatment
• Other expected new laws include the right to request a predictable working pattern and one unpaid week off a year to care for a dependant

The importance of workplace housekeeping
In the fast-paced environment of a dealership, where precision and safety are paramount, the significance of workplace housekeeping cannot be overstated. Maintaining a clean and organized workspace is not merely a matter of aesthetics; it is a critical component of operational excellence.
Efficiency and productivity
A clutter-free workspace is conducive to productivity. Imagine an engineer searching for a specific tool amidst a pile of equipment or navigating through cluttered aisles to access machinery. Such scenarios not only waste valuable time but also increase the likelihood of errors and accidents.
Robust housekeeping practices – such as organised workstations, labelled storage areas and clear pathwaysstreamline operations and optimise productivity.
Safety first
In the engineering sector, safety is nonnegotiable. From heavy machinery to hazardous chemicals, workplaces are rife with potential risks.
Cluttered floors increase the likelihood of slips, trips, and falls, posing significant hazards to staff. Moreover, improperly stored materials and equipment can lead to accidents such as fires, chemical spills, or equipment malfunctions. Maintaining a clean and organised workspace mitigates these risks and fosters a safe working environment.
Regulatory compliance
Failure to adhere to regulatory standards can result in hefty fines, legal liabilities and reputational damage. By prioritising workplace housekeeping,
you demonstrate your commitment to compliance and responsible business practices. Regular inspections, audits, and training programs ensure that employees are aware of regulatory requirements and equipped to uphold them effectively.
Building a culture of excellence
Workplace housekeeping is not solely the responsibility of your cleaning staff; it is a collective effort that requires commitment from all levels of the organisation. By fostering a culture of excellence, accountability and open communication channels, you can instil a sense of pride and ownership in maintaining orderliness and encourage suggestions for continuous improvement.

Building a brand based on good service and good product!
Established in 1986 by Peter Crewe, Euromec began distributing the Italian RCM range of sweepers and scrubber dryers throughout the UK. Building a positive reputation for sales and servicing provided a good foundation for the business to grow into what it is today.
The company moved to the Welland Business Park, Market Harborough in 1990, where they remain today, conducting sales and service for RCM products as well as a range of groundcare franchises including: Iseki, Corvus, Honda, Stiga and Mountfield. Nearly 40 years on, we spoke with Directors Nikki Heighton and Graham Hill about the business.
How has the business has evolved over the last 38 years?
Graham: RCM Italy have been designing and manufacturing machines since 1970 and it’s the distribution of this range of sweepers and scrubber dryer products that Euromec was first known for. To this day, we proudly remain the sole UK distributor for the RCM range, working hard to cover the growing network in the UK and building a strong service reputation. With the market everchanging, we were approached by a groundcare company in the late 80’s and decided to venture into this market. Since then, we have constantly been driving forward in this area of the business and pride ourselves on now offering leading
solutions for both cleansing machines and groundcare products.
You have a great location and great premises, has it always been like this?
Graham: In short no! In the late 1990’s we felt we had outgrown the building here and that it required some extensive modernisation. When you are inviting customers from large London councils the premises didn’t look professional in the state it was. So, we embarked on a large renovation - taking the building down to the concrete portals, investing in more floor space and completely refurbishing the place into what you see today.
When did you first venture into the groundcare business and how has it developed?
Graham and Nikki: We were approached in the late 80’s by Gianni Ferrari to see if we would be interested in becoming an importer and distributor for their mower range, sparked by their knowledge of us already being an importer of Italian product with RCM. We reached an agreement with them but, following a successful few years, Gianni Ferrari
decided to begin building their dealer network directly, resulting in us taking a short break from the groundcare. While we weren’t selling groundcare equipment, we had established a good reputation for service and maintenance which kept this side of the business busy.
After the building renovation in 2004, we had an impressive showroom to utilise and a prime shop window for groundcare products. We ended up taking on the Kubota franchise in 2007, and found that our prime location provided a platform to properly showcase our range and welcome passing traffic. We have since parted ways with Kubota and welcomed Iseki as our core brand along with Corvus, Stiga, Mountfield and Honda. These appointments have been incredibly positive for the business.
Graham: The groundcare side of the business gives us stability; allowing us to offer something different, but remain in machinery. When one side of the business is a bit quieter, the other sides are busy and vice versa. Peter was always saying that a three-legged stool is better than two!
MEMBER PROFILE
12 BAGMA BULLETIN - MARCH-APRIL 2024
Where has your product range taken you in terms of the type of customer you deal with?
Graham: Across our whole offering we find we get a good cross-section of customers. We have worked with the Ministry of Defence, hospitals, schools, retail and large warehousing companies with the RCM equipment across the UK. The groundcare range sees us deal with domestic customers and people with small holdings through to larger grounds maintenance contractors with sports fields. We have had some instances where there has been an overlap in our customers from the cleaning products to the groundcare range we offer. Despite the overlap, we do segment our team. We currently have six sales people on the road who are looking after the different customer bases and when the two sides of the business overlap, the team will work together on the sale. You have a range of electric sweepers and cleaners, is electric something you want to delve deeper into in the future?
Graham and Nikki: Yes I think so. It is very topical and is something people are increasingly conscious of. We have a lot of experience in the electric range, with many of the warehouses and manufacturing companies we deal with seeking battery-powered solutions. The groundcare side still has some work to do. Some of the options available can’t compete on price, though this will hopefully change. The electric Corvus has had a lot of interest, customers are asking for it as an option so in these instances we will consider expanding our range.
How has the management of the business changed over the years?
Graham: Peter was still involved in the business up until the end of 2020 when he decided to ease off with the general day-to-day and that resulted in me taking on the role of Managing Director. Nikki, Peter’s daughter, came in as a Director and completing the management team is Maria our Financial Director. In 2021 the three of us officially took over the running of Euromec. Unfortunately, Peter passed away in October 2022 which was a shock for all of us. We are extremely fortunate that, as the new management team, we had a year of receiving his support and expertise and it is great to have Nikki involved in the business to continue Peter’s legacy.
Are there any plans for the family to enter the business in the future?
Graham: We have always said that we want our children to gain experience outside of the industry first instead of coming straight into the business. We want them to get involved with the business because they want to, not because they feel like it’s the natural thing to do. My sons are off doing their own thing for now. One of them worked in the service department for a year, helping the other engineers but, again, I want them to have their own experience before committing to the business.
Nikki: Despite it being dad’s business, I went and worked in the motor trade for 5-6 years before coming here and I think that helped with bringing in fresh ideas. It also meant I came in wanting to be a part of it. My daughter is six years old, so a bit
young yet to be thinking about her career, but you never know in the future! We want to recognise individual talent in the business and see people progress, just like we did. We don’t prioritise family over the natural talent of the team when it comes to opportunities. We’re lucky to have a large number of long-standing employees, with decades of experience of working for Euromec under their belts and that’s something we’re proud of and we want to celebrate and cultivate that passion.
How did you both start your careers in the business?
Graham: I came into the business about 18 months after I began as an engineer. I moved from a mobile service engineer role to a demonstrator role before progressing into sales. I slowly moved my way through the company to Sales Director and most recently Managing Director. It is great to have experience in the different departments and be able to see the company grow and adapt over the years.
Nikki: I joined and went straight into the service department which gave me a good grounding to build upon. I still oversee the workshop today and am heavily involved with aftersales day-to-day.
Graham: With us both starting in the workshop and progressing within the company, we have a good grip on what the business is about. It gives us a good working relationship with the team - they know we have been in their shoes, so we aren’t just walking into a director role and calling the shots. We love going back into

the workshop and getting involved with a job that’s a bit of a head-scratcher! I still love getting out and seeing customers, some that I have known for 30 years.
With Iseki taking centre stage for you since 2022, how has it been received by your customers and team?
Graham: We feel positive about the decision to move forward with Iseki. The company has been fantastic, very approachable and hands-on which is what we are all about. The support they have given us over the last 12 months in particular has been great and has given us the confidence we need to now grow our sales team and push forward. The whole team have been given a boost and are excited about the future with Iseki. Regarding our customers, we were very open with them about the change and what has been the biggest compliment is that they trust our direction and have remained loyal to us as a dealer whatever the brand. We still do very well with the servicing of various machinery brands including Kubota, and we know our strong reputation for service has helped with the change.
Nikki: The Iseki product has complemented our existing ranges very well which means we no longer have a crossover now, they all hold their
own space in the market. It has been great with Corvus because they have also brought out the electric model which arrived at the end of last year. It is something our customers have been asking for and so to be able to deliver new technology is great!
Aftersales is very important to you, how do you maintain a good reputation?
Nikki and Graham: It is incredibly important to us. We know that good service is just as important as good products. We ensure that our service team have the most up-to-date manufacturer training and that is why we are very careful to ensure that we have good core brands. We don’t want lots of different ones, otherwise, it will spread the engineers too thin. We want to be sure that they have the right training and expertise to give the best service to our customers. When it comes to the RCM range, we have a network of remote engineers across the country who will ensure those customers are well looked after. It takes a lot of management but it’s a hugely important cog in the business to get right.
You have a team of 25 people, how do you maintain a good working environment?
Graham: We have been fortunate with

the people we have here at Euromec, including some very long-standing members of the team. Everyone understands that it is a team effort, everyone gets stuck in and works together wherever necessary. There isn’t a feeling of ‘this is my job, so I don’t do anything else’, we all help each other out. Even in the height of the season when the workshop is really busy, all our sales team are very hands-on, so they won’t think twice about helping to build up a machine and get it delivered.
Do you struggle to find staff locally?
Graham: Like a lot of businesses at the moment, it is a struggle. Gone are the years when you could put an advert in the paper and lots of keen engineers would turn up ready to work. We have found that we are pulling people in from further afield with our furthest travelling 40 miles to come into work, but I think everyone is in the same boat.
Nikki: We would like to place more focus in the future on bringing in apprentices. There seems to be a shortage of young people out there wanting to come into the workshop and we need to reinvigorate this as a viable career path. An apprenticeship is a great route into work and can provide opportunities for young people wanting to get into the industry, especially considering the price of university currently.
Do you have any big plans to celebrate 40 years in business in 2026?
Nikki: Not yet but it would be great to celebrate somehow! The last few years have thrown challenges at us but, also, this last year was extremely busy with some big decisions being made within the business. 2023 was a ‘serious year’ so we want to get back to having a bit of fun with the business and the team. We may look at having an open day for the 40 years as it is a milestone, and that would be a lovely opportunity to thank our loyal customers and the Euromec team.
You became a BAGMA member last year, what attracted you to join?
Nikki: It is great to be associated with an industry body such as BAGMA. A huge draw for us is the support they offer which is specific to our industry, as well as the great industry-recognised training. We are currently in the process of organising our first training course with the BAGMA team, so we are looking forward to that and utilising more of the benefits available to members in the future.

LAMMA and BTME back with a bang in 2024!
The BAGMA team had a busy start to 2024, with landmark events in both the agricultural and groundcare calendar returning to their regular January slots.
LAMMA 2024 held at the NEC ignited a fresh wave of excitement – with 95 new exhibitors and day one witnessing a record breaking surge in visitors! More than 22,000 attendees from all corners of the country gathered to enjoy the latest launches and experience first-class equipment demonstrations. This year,
LAMMA also introduced a number of new features including the highly anticipated Farming Simulator League and the engaging ‘Jobs in Agriculture Career Zone’, creating a dynamic platform for industry professionals to connect and explore new opportunities.
Together with visiting members, the BAGMA team enjoyed attending a number of seminars. One of particular interest was ‘Agricultural trailers on the public highway: Is it time for trailer tests and licensing?’ which linked with many of the objectives of BAGMA’s Agricultural Tractor Trailer Scheme (ATTS) and wider tractor-trailer safety initiatives.
across Europe took part in the exhibition and trade show, which runs alongside one of the industry’s leading education programmes in the shape of ‘Continue to Learn’.
by Nick Darking BAGMA General Manager
The following week the team descended on North Yorkshire for the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) which took place at the Harrogate Convention Centre from 23rd to 25th January. Thousands of turf professionals from
BIGGA reported a 10% increase in overall exhibitor space and a small rise in the number of visitors through the door from 2023. The event undoubtedly provides a great opportunity to catch up with friends, industry supporters and current/ prospective BAGMA members both inside the halls and outside in the many bars and restaurants that the town has to offer! However, this year the buzz of day one quickly subsided which led me to wonder whether we could see this become a two day event in the future?
LAMMA will be back at The NEC on 15th and 16th January 2025, and BTME returns on 21st to 23rd January preceded by ‘Continue to Learn’ running from 19th to 22nd January 2025.
West Country Farming and Machinery Show
Held in February at Westpoint Arena Exeter, and in its second year, The West Country Farming & Machinery Show has established a growing reputation as the premium one-day farming event in the South West.
BAGMA’s Business Development Manager Richard Jenkins spent the day catching up with numerous BAGMA members exhibiting at the show.
Agricultural companies large and small were all under one roof at the prestigious Exeter Westpoint Arena. The show, with free entry and free parking, gave all attendees a fantastic one-day opportunity to sample and keep up to date with all things farming and farm-related. Visitors were able to explore new products, services, the latest farm machinery from national manufacturers as well as connect with the region’s top dealers.
Despite the rain, by mid-morning the indoor and outdoor aisles were extremely busy and there was a great buzz around the Arena. All members reported interest from customers old and new, with most commenting on the number of quality enquiries. It was clear that exhibitors had put alot of time and money into their stands so it’s good to be rewarded with interest from customers.
BAGMA Member Ball & Ball, located in the indoor area, were promoting their braking and air conditioning systems. Sam Ball commented that they were pleasantly surprised at the quality leads secured on the day and the distance some had travelled to visit.
Richard spoke with the show organisers, who were pleased with the overall turnout. Attendance numbers were up on year one and they had 30 more exhibitors than in 2023. It was noted that the onsite auction was also well attended, with many looking for a bargain during these uncertain times.
Congratulations to the show organisers and to all the dealers for a successful
show. It was great to see that the show had grown significantly, adding further appeal to both exhibitors and visitors. Rumour is that next year’s exhibitor fees will remain the same as 2024 for those of our readership are thinking about attending in 2025.

New guide for E-Bike and Scooter Safety
The British Safety Council has published an introductory guide for employers to manage risks posed by storing and charging lithium-powered e-bikes and scooters in the workplace.
Most e-bikes are powered by Lithium Ion (Li-on) batteries, with a recent e-bike survey finding that 40% of current users commuted to and from a place of work
on them, and 20% having used them for business travel.
Questions arise around how we use, charge, and store e-bikes in the workplace – leading the British Safety Council to publish an introductory guide.
Over recent months batteries have regularly made headlines, with tragic stories of fires and explosions, resulting
in injury and loss of life. Many of these were traced back to the charging of Li-on e-scooters and e-bikes.
Phil Pinnington, Head of Audit and Consultancy, British Safety Council, said: “As with all new and developing technologies, the increasing use of e-bikes and scooters has prompted a wave of new questions, considerations, and challenges – not least for employers, as e-bikes and scooters have entered the workplace and are routinely charged at our desks. British Safety Council’s ‘Introductory Guide’ to Li-on batteries in the workplace offers a series of tips to help employers identify and assess the risks posed, how to put control measures in place, and shows some of the solutions being used around the world.”

Campey embark on UK Tour!
Campey Turf Care Systems is planning an exciting UK Road Tour in 2024, kicking off in the South East on the 11 th April and followed by six further dates around the country throughout April and early May.
The key to the success of all the events is working with turf professionals to solve issues specific to their sport, facility and conditions. Campey Director Lee Morgado explains, “Giving people detailed advice on issues specific to them is priceless, and the impact of it really can’t be overestimated. The challenges sports turf managers face in the UK can vary considerably, so to have the opportunity to talk through those issues can make a difference for them and us because we can learn and adapt from it.”
FOLEY LAUNCH FIRST EVER ROLL-ON ROLL-OFF GRINDER
Unveiled at BTME 2024, and defined as a ‘game changer’, the Foley 642 Quick Spin Reel Grinder brings a whole new meaning to quick spin. It is designed to accommodate the widest of mower cylinders and is a simple roll-on roll-off solution to grinding, with the machine sitting at floor level. The wheel in and wheel out action removes all need for heavy lifting facilities, revolutionising the way grounds professionals and greenkeepers view touch-up spin grinding. Offering a fast, easy operated option for a quick touch-up spin between regular relief grinding, it is also the perfect solution to sharpening the extra wide, heavy mowers used on sports pitches, which can be cumbersome to load into the standard grinder.
Paul Rauker, CEO and President of Foley Company made the trip to Harrogate to support the launch. “The 642 Quick Spin Reel Grinder is the first of its kind and I’m delighted to be here to acknowledge the significance of our latest development. It is a machine that will appeal to all grounds professionals who are looking to improve the performance and efficiency of their grinding programmes. As the leading manufacturer of grinding equipment, Foley Company is once again leading

East 30th April Edinburgh 2nd May Worcestershire 25th April Lincolnshire 23rd Apri
Shaun Groom, General Manager of Merlo UK, discusses current challenges and how – as leaders in agricultural and construction telehandlers – they’re embracing sustainable practices.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule, please introduce yourself.
I’m Shaun Groom and I’m General Manager of Merlo UK, a position I have held for just over three years. Prior to this role I worked for Austrian agricultural machinery manufacturer Pottinger. I am also on the AEA board of Directors, and proudly held the role of AEA President between April 2021 and April 2022.
Where did it all start for you? How have you seen the industry evolve over that time?
Despite spending my free time on a neighboring farm and working with my father in his heavy plant repair business, I officially started my working career as an apprentice technician in the car industry, working for the local BMW dealer in Norwich.
Shaking off my teenage fascination with fast cars (ok, that has never left me!) I entered the world of machinery sales in the mid 90’s at Ernest Doe’s Wymondham depot. Having cut my teeth in retail, I was fortunate to get a start in the wholesale side of the business thanks to Jeremy Colclough at Opico, which set me on the path to where I am today.
Despite the best efforts of technology, this industry is and will remain a ‘people’ industry. Some lifelong relationships and friendships have been forged which have transcended the decades for me. Given the wide range of choice, complexity and cost of product on the market today, the personal relationship has never been more important.
What do you think are the biggest challenges and opportunities within the industry currently?
One of the industry’s biggest challenges is recruitment - we need to attract a wider range of people to our industry. It can be a wonderful career and present many opportunities. I, myself, spent time working in New Zealand and benefitted from experiencing a different working culture and opened my eyes to new ways of working.
We must accept that the next generation will work differently to us and accept that change is good – I look for evolution, not revolution. As our generation have moved from fax machines and landlines to emails and mobiles, the next generation will embrace AI and autonomy to improve
productivity and enhance efficiency.
Seeing younger staff enter a business, develop and mature into roles with increased responsibility is immensely satisfying.
How have you integrated sustainable practices and where do you see these evolving?
Merlo Group have taken significant steps to be more sustainable, including the introduction of the emissions-free Merlo Generation Zero electric range of products in late 2021.
Here in the UK, all parts packaging has become 100% recyclable including the packing tape which is adhered with a water-based gum.
A significant investment in on-site energy generation at our New Forest based offices has seen 128 solar panels commissioned in the last 12 months. This has almost satisfied our electricity needs and has allowed for 12 EV chargers to be installed. Merlo UK offers free on-site EV charging for visitors and staff meaning we can share the benefit with our team, who can travel in an electric vehicle and re-fuel for free!
When it comes to shipping products from our Italian factory, we have started
to switch from using exclusively road freight to electric trains to transport our products across mainland Europe and completing their journey to the UK aboard low emission LNG/Electric hybrid powered ships. These steps have resulted in a 90% reduction in fossil fuel consumption compared to a route using exclusively road freight.
As a family-owned business, Merlo Group values sustainability, ensuring we leave a positive legacy for the next generation and means our handlers are more than just green in colour!
Lastly, what is the importance of BAGMA and other associations in supporting you and the wider industry?
In my opinion, trade associations such as the AEA and BAGMA have a greater role to play than ever in 2024 and beyond. We have lived through some significant events from BSE, Foot and Mouth, Avian Bird Flu to the Covid pandemic and BREXIT. Our generation may not have lived through a war, but we’ve faced some major events that significantly impact on the way we work. Our trade associations are critical in sharing news and providing support and advice to help guide us through these challenges.
