Battery Safety | BAGMA’s Paperless Solution | SALTEX 2024

It’s a very busy time at BAGMA!

Dear members,

It’s somewhat hard to believe we are already into September and that thoughts are beginning to turn to autumn maintenance, forecasting for 2025 and speculating on what sort of winter we’re in for this year.

The summer months provided lots of great opportunities to network with county shows and numerous industry events taking place across the country. BAGMA were delighted to see so many members and friends at The Highland Show and Royal Welsh, and more recently, at GroundsFest.

The diary shows no sign of let up as we head to SALTEX, the Midlands Machinery Show and LAMMA over the next few months. We also greatly look forward to the next BAGMA Connect meeting, being hosted by Kubota (UK) on the 16th October. I would urge anybody who has not attended a Connect meeting to come along if you are able. We have some fantastic speakers and industry representatives in attendance, all there to help you and your business with any support you may need. Tickets are free

and are available via the BAGMA website. Behind the scenes I am pleased to say BAGMA have been working hard to secure more services to save your business time and money. This month we have welcomed Renticy on board as a new Service Provider. Renticy offer a flexible rental platform, opening the door to new revenue streams – you can read more about them on page 9.

We’re also delighted to bring you the details of BAGMA’s new paperless solution for handover & installation paperwork. In conjunction with Culverdocs, BAGMA members can now take advantage of digitised forms and systems to streamline machinery installations and transform many other areas of health and safety administration. More details on this can be found on page 8.

This edition also features a dive into the happenings at Argyll Engineers and the logistical challenges of supporting customers on the Western Isles of Scotland which I have no doubt you’ll find eye-opening.

As ever, if there’s anything we can do to help or support you, please get in touch.

BULLETIN BOARD

HSE CRACKDOWN ON CHILDREN IN THE WORKPLACE

A farm worker was recently given a 12-month community order after they were spotted with a child in the tractor cab when feeding cattle on a South Wales farm. Having already been issued with a Prohibition Notice by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in November 2020 for allowing a pre-teen grandchild to ride in their tractor, just two months later, footage emerged of a flagrant breach of the terms of that notice. Children under the age of 13 are specifically prohibited from driving or riding on any agricultural machinery. More guidance is freely available on the HSE website.

Secretary of State for Education endorses enhanced funding for Land-based Engineering Apprenticeships

In a significant development for the land-based engineering sector, the Secretary of State for Education has officially approved revised funding levels for the standalone level 2 and level 3 apprenticeships. This landmark decision underscores the commitment to fostering skilled professionals in a crucial industry.

The new apprenticeship standards, spearheaded by the Land-based Engineering Training & Education Committee (LE-TEC) Apprenticeship Working Group, have introduced a revised content and structure to the land-based engineering training programmes. Unlike the previous model which offered direct entry to either the level 2 apprenticeship, or the level 3, which incorporated the level 2, the revised standards offer a distinct pathway; a level 2 apprenticeship which is then followed by the level 3, if required. This approach not only enhances flexibility for employers, but also allows apprentices to advance according to their career aspirations by achieving a level 2 in the first instance and then moving onto the level 3.

A major breakthrough in this initiative is the enhanced level of funding now available. After extensive negotiations and detailed submissions by the LE-TEC Working Group and following further scrutiny of the group’s comprehensive documentation and calculations, the Secretary of State for Education has remarkably revised the funding bands upwards. Funding levels are now set at £16,000 for level 2 and £15,000 for

level 3. Previous levels recommended by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) were at £15,000 and £14,000, respectively.

David Kirschner, Independent Consultant to the Land-based Engineering Sector praised the decision as a critical step forward. “This increase in funding is not just a financial adjustment, it’s a recognition of the value and unique skills provided by the land-based engineering sector. It helps address the urgent need for skilled service technicians and engineers, ensuring the sustainability of apprenticeship programs vital to our industry’s future.”

The funding adjustment marks a 48% increase compared to the previous funding model, which was set at £21,000 for the level 3, which incorporated the level 2. This enhancement is expected to significantly bolster the industry’s ability to recruit, develop and retain talent, so urgently needed for the sector.

Also approved by IfATE is the funding of a progression pathway for students completing the new land-based engineering T-Level, who will be able to progress onto a fast-track apprenticeship should they wish to do so. The dovetailing of the qualifications

means that training providers will assess a student’s individual skills gap for those who wish to progress on to the level 3 apprenticeship straight from a T-Level. The training provider will put together a 12 month programme to cover the deficit skills and knowledge. Again, a huge achievement for the LE-TEC Working Group.

The success of this initiative highlights the power of industry commitment and collaborative efforts in achieving

meaningful outcomes. The revised funding structure promises to support a new generation of skilled professionals equipped to meet the evolving demands of the land-based engineering sector.

Together we are stronger

Ihope everyone managed to make the most of the summer sunshine while it lasted! Unfortunately, the ongoing uncertainty and negative news circulating within the industry and wider media sadly doesn’t paint a very sunny picture. I think we were all anticipating that the start of 2024 would be a challenging time businesswise, and for many, it has proven as such. We’ve seen an alarming number of dealerships going into liquidation which is incredibly difficult for us all to witness and, of course, for those caught up in the closures.

Through these turbulent times keeping in touch and networking with peers, colleagues and friends is more important than ever. It was great to see lots of you at GroundsFest recently. There was a definite buzz to the event and it was really great to see that the organisers had listened to feedback from last year and made significant improvements to

the shows layout. While the weather was a little blustery and showery across both days, this didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the thousands of visitors who flocked through the gates.

I’m also pleased to report that the BAGMA Golf Day & Dinner was another resounding success! You’ll be able to read more about this in the next edition of the Bulletin.

In other positive news, BAGMA are pleased to launch a brand new paperless solution for the way you store and access Handover & Installation documents. In conjunction with Culverdocs, leaders in paperless mobile forms and data capture, this new system promises to revolutionise the simplicity and efficiency of machinery installation records. You can read more about this on page 8. As ever, our phone lines and inboxes are open so please get in touch if there’s anything we can do to support you and your business.

John Deere joins BAGMA

John Deere has joined the British Agricultural and Garden Machinery Association (BAGMA) to support the wider turfcare dealer industry.

John Deere’s leading turfcare products are sold throughout the UK and Ireland through the company’s dealership network, which has a fantastic reputation for sales support and aftersales service.

“In joining BAGMA, John Deere continues to recognise the importance of the roles that dealers play in support of our customers,” says Chris Meacock, John Deere’s Division Sales Manager for Golf and Turf. “This support is crucial throughout the lifetime of the product, not just its initial sale.”

Not only is the dealership network important to customers, but service and maintenance depots are also great places to work. Amazing career opportunities are on offer within the network, from

John Deere’s prestigious apprenticeship programme to the military hiring programme.

“The future of dealerships is looking brighter than ever, especially with so much new technology coming enabling

customers to make their operations more efficient,” says Chris Meacock.

John Deere dealerships can be found across the UK and Ireland, and local dealers can be found at: dealerlocator.deere.com

Taking charge of battery safety

With our industry now evidently aware of its role in preserving the environment and promoting a socially responsible status, it is no surprise that we are seeing an ever-increasing demand for, and supply of, battery technology - with it emerging as a popular power source for many types of equipment in our sector.

Within the last decade, developments in battery technology have accelerated but our understanding of the various obligations regarding the life-cycle of battery powered equipment isn’t always clear. I recently delivered an update to members covering the key considerations.

Battery technology brings many benefits not just to perceptions, but to real performance and overall user experience. For this to be maximised, operators of battery-powered equipment must consider all aspects of its ownership – including transportation, storage and handling to servicing, maintenance and end-of-life disposal.

Currently, there are no independent or college-based courses tailored specifically to the agricultural or

groundcare industries, however some training courses have transposable units such as those offered on Marine electrical awareness and maintenance as well as various industrial electrical courses offered by most colleges. Those interested in obtaining more information or exploring EV and Health & Safety qualifications in more detail are encouraged to speak with their local college.

Rules regarding the transportation of batteries differs depending on whether the battery is lithium or non-lithium. In the case of non-lithium, general safe handling should be adhered to. Individual cells/batteries should be segregated and packaged separately to any metals or conducting devices. The transportation of lithium batteries is governed by the following regulations – UN3480, UN3841 and UN3490. Lithium cells ‘C’ size and above are categorised as ‘Dangerous Goods’ and should be packaged and labelled as such. Cells containing less than 2g of lithium are exempt from being classified as ‘Dangerous’ but still require special labelling.

With regard to storage, best practice is to store the batteries in cool, dry and well-ventilated areas - an ambient temperature of between 1ºC and 25ºC is ideal. Temperatures of over 30ºC, extreme humidity and areas of moisture or potential leaks should all be avoided. Batteries, lithium or non-lithium, should not be stored or mixed with conductors. They should also not be stored in hermetically sealed containers.

When handling batteries, following general Health & Safety guidelines will ensure safe working practices – the level of protection required will be determined

by the type and size of battery in question. The correct PPE should be worn – gloves, eye protection, boots and/or plastic aprons when required. Measures should be in place to avoid short-circuiting the cells by removing metal objects from pockets, hands and arms, and by using the appropriate tooling. Equally, steps should be taken to prevent fire by not smoking, removing any potential ignition sources and only handling/operating batteries in well ventilated areas.

Guidance on servicing and maintaining batteries is where things become a little more complex! Having risk assessments in place is a good starting point, together with obtaining the correct training from manufacturers or local colleges. Calculations are available online to provide guidance on charging and ventilation requirements which will vary depending on the number of cells in the battery, current and dilution factor.

A lot of good information can also be found online about waste batteries and end-of-life disposal. The first stage in working out what regulations you must follow is to define the type of battery you are trying to dispose of. A portable battery or battery pack is a battery which meets all of the following criteria:

• Sealed

• Weights 4kg or below

• Not an automotive or industrial battery

• Not designed for industrial or professional use

An industrial battery or battery pack is one of any size or weight, that meets one of the following characteristics:

• Designed for industrial or professional use

• Used as a power source for propulsion in an electric or hybrid vehicle

• Unsealed but not an automotive battery

• Sealed but not a portable battery

The answers to the above questions will determine the correct method of disposal. For portable batteries, organisations must ensure they are registered with the correct battery compliance scheme or environmental regulator, who can then coordinate collections using approved and licensed waster transporters. Additional information must be provided by those looking to dispose of industrial batteries before waste is sent to an approved battery treatment operative (ABTO) or approved battery exporter (ABE) for treatment and recycling.

More information on waste batteries, and battery safety in general, can be found by visiting the gov.uk website.

Top tips for deterring and stopping theft

Sadly, BAGMA members will be all too aware of how desirable handheld garden machinery has become recently for criminals. Theft is not limited to smaller items of equipment, with reports of stolen heavy machinery also a considerable problem and sometimes the result of larger-scale organised crime.

Thefts from dealerships, hire centres, workshops and storage facilities range from smaller handheld power tools, through to ride-on mowers and quad bikes, all the way up to large agricultural tractors and implements.

Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do to make your facility more secure, deterring thieves and preventing property being taken. Common and wellused deterrents include:

• Intruder Alarms

• CCTV

• Trackers and Property Marking

• Immobilisers

• Physical Security

Criminals typically have a time window of opportunity to target theft before a response arrives. Therefore measures to slow down or impede the theft could be as simple as shackling items together or chaining machinery to a hitch secured to the ground or the fabric of a building. Just making items more difficult to remove can effectively deter theft.

Security fogging has historically helped deter and stop crime in a range of environments, protecting assets across many different sectors including banking, retail, warehousing and domestic property. However, when one sector sees a decrease in crime this often just means activity is displaced to another.

High speed security fog, like that employed in the Fog Bandit system, eliminates the time and opportunity for criminals to target desirable items or physical security. Ultimately, what can’t be seen can’t be stolen!

When sensors detect an intruder, Fog Bandit’s patented high-pressure system instantly delivers a dense, visually impenetrable yet harmless fog, obscuring stock, equipment and other contents from sight and maintaining zero visibility for 30+ minutes. Considerable cost, time and effort can be saved, disruption to business is reduced to a minimum and normal trading can be quickly resumed.

As exclusive distributors of Fog Bandit in the UK and Ireland, Bandit UK are on hand to assist BAGMA members who are interested in protecting their business with free site surveys and, where appropriate, a live demonstration of the Fog Bandit system.

Employment Law ChangesAre you prepared?

With the new Labour government committed to supporting working people, employers can expect significant changes to their policies and practices in the coming months and years ahead.

From banning zero-hour contracts and expanding day one rights, to the end of fire and rehire and introducing enhanced family-friendly rights, there are lots of proposed changes to come. While the Labour manifesto doesn’t provide a great amount of detail around the new government’s plans for employment law, what it does refer to is its commitment to implement the ‘New Deal’.

To further assist you and to help you get up-to-date with Labour’s proposed reforms, our team at WorkNest have developed a comprehensive guide that outlines the 10 key employment legislation proposals from the new government and their potential impact on employers. These are:

1) Introduce a ‘single worker’ status

When Opportunity Beckons

Argyll Engineers Ltd is a big success story for a small organisation. We spoke to Cameron MacFarlane about his origins, the firm’s history and their direction for the future.

Tell us about the history of the business and how you, personally, became involved.

I was brought up on the family’s small farm/croft on an Island just off Oban but always had a love for tractors and machinery and an interest in how they worked. I was lucky enough to be offered an apprenticeship in agricultural engineering with Jack Olding’s, the then Massey Ferguson dealer in Perth which of course meant I had to move away from home to the mainland. During this time, I went to Elmwood Agricultural & Technical College in Cupar, Fife, where I gained my City & Guilds in Agricultural Engineering and the City & Guilds Bronze Award in Advanced Tractor Mechanics. I progressed as an engineer with Jack

Olding to eventually become their Service Manager. Jack Olding was in time taken over by Edward’s Engineering where I continued as their Service Manager. It was, however, just after this take over in 1989 that the time seemed right for me to realise my long-term dream to move back to Oban where I could also see that there was a huge opening for someone with my engineering skills and experience. Fortunately, my business plan was also supported by the Highlands & Islands Development Board who awarded me a £2,700 interest free loan to finance my first service van and kit it out with some specialist tools and, as they say, the rest is history!

In 2022 Argyll Engineers underwent significant expansion, adding a new

second building onto our site, to house a showroom for Polaris, Takeuchi, clothing and accessories along with a rehoused parts department and two purpose built offices.

What are the major changes you’ve seen in the industry over your career?

Without question, communication and technology. So much fault finding now comes from the use of electronic diagnostics where we can dial in to systems and get live information from a machine, while it’s working in the field. We can then use this information to see potential faults while deciding what parts and equipment we are likely to need and, of course geographically for us, we can pinpoint the machine’s exact location. Equally, the manufacturer is now able to access the machine system for diagnostics and is able to make necessary updates direct from the factory, even if it’s overseas! Of course,

all of this technology comes at a cost with not only the purchase of laptops and specialist electronic diagnostic equipment, but the manufacturers licence fees for their use.

You provide support to customers in a number of different sectors – what is the current company split?

The Western Highlands & Islands have very little arable land and as such we don’t see demand for combine harvesters and/or related arable agricultural machinery. We do, however, have the Krone franchise which suits what little arable land we do have –mainly utilised for growing grass for silage and hay for animal feed.

40% of our business now centres around the Polaris Side by Side vehicles which are invaluable on farms and estates. In fact, lots of diverse businesses find these machines invaluable bearing in mind the terrain in our part of the country.

30% of our business relates to tractors which are still a farming necessity despite not being a big arable area.

to builders, contractors, fish farms, local councils and more.

Your location on the West Coast of Scotland sees you work with customers on the Western Isles. What challenges or opportunities does this present?

We service the mainland of the Western Highlands to approximately a 100 mile radius from Oban, but the bulk of our business is in the Oban and Fort William areas where there are absolutely no dual carriageways and many of the roads are single tracks with passing places. With the roads making their way around the hills, lochs and rivers making travelling a bit of a nightmare from a practical perspective, driving in the Highlands is made only slightly better by the absolutely stunning scenery!

We also service the Western Isles including: Mull, Skye, Tiree, Colonsay and occasionally as far as Harris and Uist in the Outer Hebrides. Tiree is about a four hour trip each way on the ferry.

Clearly logistics can be very challenging, in particular working on the Islands where we need to book

The remaining 30% is mini excavators. Takeuchi mini excavators are now used almost daily on many farms and estates and our offering of machines from 1 tonne right up to 15 tonne machines enable us to cater for all markets including small digger retail and service

s Cameron MacFarlane has taken advantage of every career and business opportunity that has come his way.

ferry spaces in advance. We don’t get any preferential treatment or bookings, so service and repair work needs to be

programmed and finished within a time slot or we miss the ferry home, and there’s no guarantees to get on the next one either! Bad weather and an aging Caledonian MacBrayne ferry fleet can

compound the problem and of course the tourist season makes travelling anywhere very challenging whether by road or ferry.

BAGMA has talked a lot about manufacturer warranty reimbursement rates for dealers. Add this to the discussion, the fact we don’t get any reimbursement from the manufacturer for the ferry charges, for the van or the driver and we don’t get compensated for the time that they spend on the ferry. As already mentioned, for us, that could easily be two to four hours each way. What brands have proven to be key in the development of Argyll Engineers?

How have these relationships, or consumer demands, changed over the years?

When I started the business in 1989 my background was in agricultural engineering but I was always happy to turn my hand and expertise to any area where there was a need for my engineering skills. Naturally things evolve and as time moves on, we all see opportunities in other areas. Sometimes, we also very quickly weed out the areas that aren’t really in the long-term plan.

In 2005 I was offered the opportunity to sell Landini tractors in our area which lead me to opening the premises, that we still work from today, in Oban. Over the period that followed, we took on McCormack tractors, both of course are part of the ARGO organisation and for us now equates to our market share in the area.

Polaris ATV & Side by Side came to us in 2011 and has now become a major part of our business with a considerable share of the market in our area. In addition, and as already mentioned, the Takeuchi 1-15 tonne excavators has proved to be a very successful franchise that fits very well into our area and

“Our apprentice recruitment generally comes through customer recommendations from young people with a keen interest in the industry”

suits a vast and varied customer base.

We also offer a unique hydraulic hose repair service in the Western Highlands and Islands. With our FINN power swager, we probably hold the largest stock of hoses and hose ends around, uniquely up to 2” in diameter. We have since expanded this area of our business and now also offer a mobile hydraulic hose repair service with a specially kitted-out service van for all onsite repairs. This has proven invaluable for quickly rectifying leaking and burst hydraulic hoses on a variety of machines in construction, marine and fishing industries as well as agriculture. What do you do to attract and retain staff? Do you have opportunities for apprentices?

recommendations from young people with a keen interest in the industry, although we do make use of social media. All our apprentices will attend SRUC Oatridge College near Edinburgh. The company now being family-run surely puts you in good stead for a positive future?

As with all other the companies in this industry, recruitment and retention is very challenging. We do bring through our own apprentices to service our business going forward, but nothing stands still and the experience gained in our industry does offer opportunities for other industries to attract our engineers away.

Our apprentice recruitment generally comes through customer

Yes, we remain a very proud family business. My wife Sine looks after the office, all the associated administration as well as the financial side of the business. She is supported and assisted by Caitlin, the partner of my son, Cameron.

We currently have four technicians, all with kitted out service vans, including Cameron who - like myself - has multiple roles in the business. Although Cameron is also a qualified engineer, he runs the business in my absence, looks after the

parts department and even drives the lorry when needed. I believe we have a sound business succession plan and I’m sure Argyll Engineers Ltd will be around for a long time to come, especially when I see the interest shown by our four lovely grandchildren.

Thank you for being longstanding BAGMA members! What’s the importance of this for you?

We have been BAGMA members for almost as long as we’ve been trading and I do try to attend some of the Scottish Regional meetings when I can. It’s a five hour round trip to Central Scotland but some of the topics of the agenda are incredibly important to me.

The main thing about BAGMA is that it keeps us in touch with everything happening in our industry. We find the monthly e-briefing particularly informative, with its direct links to lots of up to date news and relevant information.

We also use the services available from Safety Aide. Bearing in mind we spend a lot of time lone working, we’ve had some great tips and legal advice from them which has proved invaluable. I’m also currently looking at the training services available, with particular attention to Handover & Installation and LOLER training.

With increasing pressure by manufacturers to stock more higher value machines, we may also need to consider short-term financing some of

this stock going forward so this will be another service we can get assistance with via our BAGMA membership. www.argyllengineers.com

Community Sport Zone expands at SALTEX 2024

The Grounds Management Association has announced the expansion of the much-loved Community Sport Zone at SALTEX 2024.

Dedicated to the unsung heroes of community and volunteer sports grounds, this year’s zone promises to be the place to be for all things turf maintenance for grassroots and community sports clubs.

Following its triumphant debut in 2023, we’ve pulled out all the stops to make this years’ experience even more spectacular. More space, more machinery, and yes, its very own Learning LIVE stage!

This year on the brand-new Community Sports Stage, ten engaging sessions will take place over two days, with hot topics such as Facility Funding, Essential Planning for Pitch Improvement Projects, Quality Surfaces on a Shoestring Budget, Understanding Your PitchPower Report

and How to Attract and Manage Club Volunteers. Many visitors cite Learning LIVE as a key reason for attending the show and it’s no wonder with it being the largest live educational event in the grounds management sector.

Meanwhile, the machinery on display will be perfectly suited to the needs of community and grassroots sports clubs, with leading exhibitors like ISEKI, Dennis and SISIS, Campey Turf Care Systems, and Trimax Mowing Systems showcasing their top products. It’s not just about top-tier recommendations, but about providing practical solutions that work on the ground for clubs with limited resources.

Trimax Mowing Systems will present their ‘Trimax Striker’, a multi-spindled rotary mower designed with a unique baffle system to enhance grass distribution and minimise clumping while requiring minimal maintenance. Built for tough conditions, the Striker offers variable height adjustment for year-round use and features an enclosed cutting chamber for enhanced safety.

ISEKI will introduce the latest additions to their lineup: the TM4 series 25hp tractor and the 40hp TLE3410 tractor, both popular choices among sports facility customers. These tractors will be equipped with specialised attachments for sports ground maintenance.

Jason Booth, Chief Operating Officer at the Grounds Management Association, said: “The Community Sport Zone is now a vital part of SALTEX, particularly for the grassroots volunteers who play such a crucial role in maintaining community sports facilities. We’ve designed this space to provide information, advice and guidance, from funding through to grass pitch maintenance, tailored learning opportunities and hands-on access to equipment that directly benefit those who give their time and energy to support their local clubs.”

Trio of wider models added to KUHN Prolander range

KUHN Farm Machinery has expanded its versatile Prolander cultivator range with three wider models suited to farmer and contractors requiring a high output machine for a variety of soil conditions.

The three models – 9000, 12000 and 14000 – offer working widths of 9.2m, 12.2m and 14.2m respectively, which will suit users operating controlled traffic systems. The new models take the Prolander range to eight, offering a versatile stubble cultivator capable of working a range of seedbeds, including ploughed, cultivated or stubble.

Edd Fanshawe, KUHN’s arable and connected services product specialist, says the new models allow larger growers to benefit from the Prolander.

“The Prolander has grown in popularity over recent seasons due to its versatility and ease of use. The wider models increase the appeal for growers requiring a tine cultivator capable of a wide range of operations together with a modest power requirement of 25-35hp/m.”

Working depths of 3-12cm are possible across the Prolander range and a new

90x13mm S-tooth is ideal for ‘tearing’ stubbles to guarantee a complete mix of surface material. Existing tine options are available, including the 70x12mm S shaped tine and 60mm or 200mm goose foot tines. Double U or Double Tube rollers can be specified to suit user requirements.

The five smaller Prolander models, from 4m to 7.5m, are now available with the SH 600 - a 600-litre hopper designed to sow cover crops and small seeds in a one-pass system. Seeding options for the new larger models include KUHN’s TF 1512 front tank.

Starting price for the 9m Prolander 9000 is £83,000.

s The three new Prolander models are aimed at users requiring a high-output versatile cultivator.

David Hart, Managing Director of Kubota UK & ROI

discussing the past, present and future of one of the industry’s most recognisable brands as they prepare to mark a major European milestone!

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule. Firstly, please introduce yourself.

I’m David Hart, and I’ve been the Managing Director of Kubota UK & ROI for the last six years – that includes the agriculture and groundcare businesses, construction, engines, parts and services. I am also an Executive Board Member and VP for Business Transformation of Kubota Holdings Europe, based in The Netherlands. The Business Transformation role is primarily focused on aligning business processes and structure across the units and sales companies throughout Europe. Where did it all start for you? How have you seen the industry evolve over that time?

My career began in the 80’s, with an industrial year placement at Ben Burgess. After qualifying, I went back as a salesman for five years. I then joined John Deere in their aftersales department,

before jumping back into a sales roles which saw me travelling around the UK. From here I progressed to head office, specifically product-line management before taking control of the turf division. My final role covering Europe, near Middle East and CIS managing the strategic and key account business involved a lot of international travel. After a total of 28 years with John Deere, I left to join Kubota in 2018.

The biggest change I’ve witnessed over that time is the way we communicate with customers and dealers. When I started out in sales, your day would be structured around phone calls made from home/ office/telephone boxes and physical face-toface meetings. Today we have mobile and virtual calls, emails, WhatsApp, social media…. A whole array of communication options which do bring certain efficiencies but also create an impersonal environment for doing business. I hope we don’t lose those interpersonal skills which form such a beautiful part of life’s tapestry.

With equipment, the changes haven’t been so revolutionary. A tractor still looks like a tractor and the majority of machines still have a diesel engine. Moving forwards, things may change at a faster pace, however I don’t see diesel engines disappearing for a few years yet. One of Kubota’s key global focuses is on sustainable and environmentallyconscious practice – Talk us through some of the initiatives in place in this area.

In order to achieve our Global Major Brand 2030 long-term vision, as a group we’re working hard on a number of environmental, social and governance objectives. We aim to be an ‘Essentials Innovator for Supporting Life’ and are committed to conducting our business activities in a way that contributes to a

prosperous society and cycle of nature.

This means thinking about solutions for today and tomorrow. We must continue to provide products that are fit for purpose, and that means exploring all propulsion options, be those hydrogen, electric, petrol and/or diesel including hybrid.

October 2024 marks 50 Years of Kubota in Europe. How is this exciting milestone being celebrated?

The Kubota Corporation was founded in Osaka in 1890, primarily producing castings for daily commodities, before focusing on powered equipment in the early 1900’s. 1974 saw the foundation of the first sales company in Europe and the rest, as they say, is history!

We’re looking forward to celebrating this 50-year milestone alongside our agricultural and groundcare dealers from across Europe this October, as we come together in Barcelona to toast past successes and share new concepts and strategies for the future.

We’re proud to have you as part of the AEA Board of Directors. What is the importance of this and what role do BAGMA and the AEA have in supporting you and the industry?

I’ve worked in both the dealer and manufacturer channels plus over the years I’ve been a member of Grassland & Livestock equipment group, on the Outdoor Power Equipment Council and ATV & Quad Vehicle Group. Today, I am fortunate enough to be on the Farm Equipment Council and joined the AEA Board in March 2024. I feel it is important to bring my experiences across agriculture and groundcare to the initiatives with the AEA and wider industry.

The AEA does a fantastic job of representing the manufacturers and BAGMA, likewise, for the dealer channel. Having one unified voice representing the industry is very important, particularly now we are out of the EU, where greater engagement is needed with the UK government in the formation of industry legislation.

Kubota recognise we are nothing without our dealer network and it is important to us that they are strong. The AEA/BAGMA are working hard to improve recruitment, especially at the dealer level, and support all of those we need in a healthy network – from independent dealers, through to multi-depot brands.
