ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF COUNTRY We acknowledge the traditional country of the Kabi Kabi Gubbi Gubbi peoples and the Jinibara peoples of the coastal plains and the hinterlands of the Sunshine Coast. We recognise that these beautiful places have always been places of cultural, spiritual, social and economic significance to Australia’s first people. Badderam pays respect to Indigenous elders – past, present and emerging – and we acknowledge the important role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have played and continue to play within Buderim and the Sunshine Coast community.

BADDERAM: INDIGENOUS WORD F O R T H E N AT I V E H O N E Y S U C K L E BANKSIA FROM WHICH THE NAME B U D E R I M WA S D E R I V E D
ANCIENT BUDERIM A P L AC E W H E R E N AT U R E WA S W O R S H I P P E D Once upon a time in sub-tropical Queensland not far inland from the sea, there stood an ancient volcanic mountain where large redwoods grew and berries fell to the forest floor. The mountain was a paradise filled with rainforests and waterfalls, colourful birds and rare butterflies, where fauna frolicked and ocean vistas stretched as far as the eye could see. This was a sacred spiritual place for the region's first inhabitants, the local Aboriginal Kabi Kabi Gubbi Gubbi peoples, who named the mountain Badderam in reference to the native honeysuckle banksia which grew in the sandy flats at the base of the mountain. Regular pilgrimage was made to the mountain to forage for food, to rest and retreat. Badderam was a special place where ritual and ceremony were held, where celebration was enjoyed and nature was worshipped.

Crops such as ginger, coffee and bananas were soon planted in the rich volcanic soils. In 1914, a small gauge railway was built to transport Buderim’s fine produce from the top of the mountain to the region’s markets and wharfs. Buderim’s remnant forests, alluring flora and fauna, and exquisite ocean vistas could no longer be kept a secret as sightseers and day trippers began to ride the produce train. By the early 1920s, Buderim was widely regarded as a resort destination. Guest houses and spa lodges had opened and tourists flocked to the mountain for rejuvenation and retreat, to bathe under crystal waterfalls and drink from natural mountain springs. A new tourism destination was born.

T H E W H Y– C R E AT I N G A L E G AC Y WH E RE LUXU RY M E E TS ECO LO GY AND CU LTU RAL AN D C UL I NA RY STO R IE S A RE TO LD When Badderam development applicants and landowners Heidi Meyer and husband Kim Carroll returned to live on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in 2013 after years of travelling and living abroad, they were mesmerised once more by the coastal region’s scenic beauty and vast array of natural assets. They were surprised to discover, however, that in such a thriving and tourism-rich region, there were so few 5-Star luxury resorts with international-standard facilities they could enjoy. As owners of a large, tightly-held and very rare land parcel on Buderim, Heidi and Kim dreamed of telling Buderim's cultural and culinary stories. They decided they would like to leave a legacy for Buderim and the Sunshine Coast as they set their sights on building an internationally-branded luxury resort on their land. But this was no small vision. A pair of epicurean conservationists, they insisted the proposed resort would be highly innovative, zero waste, integrate the latest sustainable technologies, lead the world in its ecological standards, and completely redefine luxury tourism. An expert team was assembled and the Badderam vision was created. This vision has achieved remarkable levels of community and council support and is now a DA approved construction ready project. Such is the local excitement for the Badderam development that multiple adjoining land sites have been offered to Heidi and Kim for purchase, with some containing existing residence and villa approvals.

Humans are rarely motivated by guilt and almost always motivated by pleasure. Through subtle education, indulgence and reward, guests and staff will be inspired to participate in Badderam's zero waste approach. Our resource management plan of zero waste will be achieved by implementing the following initiatives: • E ducation programs that inspire resort guests, staff, suppliers and the local community to collaborate in Badderam's zero waste strategy, making this adventure pleasurable and fun – for everyone • A ll recyclable material collected through a co-mingled recycling system • C areful purchasing decisions to minimise resource extraction – if materials cannot be reused, recycled or composted they will not be allowed into the resort • A ll organic waste composted using an onsite high-tech, automatic, aerobic, odourless and silent composting unit, known as an OSCA. The OSCA is made locally on the Sunshine Coast and exported around the world. This extraordinary industrial composter is capable of processing around 2 tonnes of waste material per week. The unit processes waste streams including food waste, agricultural waste, compostable packaging, paper and cardboard, manure and green waste – ideal for the resort's extensive gardens
