MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

It is my pleasure to present the Impact Report for the 2022-2023 academic year. This report highlights some of the remarkable accomplishments and milestones that our school community has achieved over the past year.

One of the most significant highlights of the year was our successful return to a relatively normal school year after two years of virtual and hybrid learning. Our students, faculty, and staff all showed tremendous resilience, adaptability, and determination in navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing our students actively participating in activities, engaging with one another, and immersing themselves in their studies has been truly inspiring.

Academically, our students achieved remarkable success, with many demonstrating significant growth and achieving impressive results. Our faculty and staff have continued to provide innovative and engaging learning opportunities, ensuring that our students receive a high-quality education that is grounded in Jewish values and traditions.

Beyond academic achievement, our students have also made a significant impact in the broader community. They have engaged in projects that embody the Jewish values of chesed and

Tikkun Olam, making a real and positive difference in the lives of others. Whether through community service, social justice initiatives, or environmental sustainability projects, our students have demonstrated a deep commitment to making the world a better place.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our entire Talmud Torah | Herzliah community. From our faculty and staff to our students and families, everyone has played a critical role in achieving these impressive results. I am grateful for the support and partnership of each and every one of you.

As we look ahead to the next school year, I am confident that we will continue to build on this success and make an even greater impact in our Montreal Jewish community and beyond.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our school and our shared values.

4

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As President of the Board of Directors, I am proud to report that our school has made significant strides in achieving our goals and fulfilling our mission of providing an exceptional education that fosters both academic and personal growth for our students.

Our commitment to Jewish values is at the heart of everything we do at our school. Our students not only receive a world-class education but also develop a deep understanding and appreciation of their Jewish heritage and traditions. We are proud to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment that embraces the diversity of our Jewish community.

One of the highlights of the past year was the engagement of our Board Members in propelling our school forward. Our Board Members have been actively involved in shaping our school’s strategic direction, identifying key priorities, and working collaboratively to ensure our school’s continued success. After a year-long process of self reflection, we are near the completion of a rigorous accreditation process with Prizmah, which has helped us to identify areas for improvement and enhancement. In parallel, the Board of Directors together with administrators has worked tirelessly to develop a new strategic plan for the next 3-5 years, which provides a roadmap for our school’s future growth and success.

We are also proud to report progress in advancing plans to build a new facility for Talmud Torah within the Sylvan Adams YM YWHA. This new facility will provide our students with state-of-the-art learning spaces and support our school’s continued growth and development.

Finally, our school is in a healthy financial position, thanks to the generous support of our donors and community partners. We are committed to using these resources wisely and to continuing to invest in our students’ education and well-being.

In closing, I would like to leave you with a quote from Pirkei Avot, which reads: “You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it (2:21).” This quote embodies the spirit of our school’s mission and the commitment of our Board Members to continue striving towards our goals. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our Board Members for their tireless efforts, dedication, and unwavering support. Your hard work has been instrumental in driving our school’s progress and ensuring our continued success. Thank you for all that you do, and we look forward to the great things that we will achieve together in the future.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our school, and for your commitment to our mission of providing an exceptional education to our students. We look forward to sharing more updates with you in the years ahead.

STUDENTS GIVING BACK

TIKKUN OLAM TIYUL

As part of our commitment to the core value of Tikkun Olam, a cohort of Secondary IV students, together with two staff members, traveled to Holon, Israel to take part in an immersive and authentic learning experience. Over the course of ten days students worked together with other volunteers and health care professionals at Save a Child’s Heart (SACH). They witnessed and took part in the very best of Israel. This inaugural experiential program allowed the participants to actively promote other’s well being through acts of loving kindness.

Herzliah students made a tremendous impact on the lives of children who were facing monumental health challenges. They spent time with the children in the Legacy Heritage Children’s Home as well as in the

hospital, helping keep spirits high while entertaining and supporting the young patients. They learned about the complex logistics of fundraising and the intricacies of pediatric healthcare. The trip enabled our students to make a meaningful difference while at the same time build character and become empathetic to the plight of others, all while establishing a strong connection to Israel.

Thanks to incredibly generous donors who sponsored the trip, we were able to reduce the cost for the students and their families.

This trip taught me how special Israel truly is. Besides the incredibly impressive advanced medical system Israel has compared to the rest of the world, I was able to see Israel’s willingness to do good, Tikkun olam.

Every Tuesday, Israel brings sick kids from Gaza, to provide them medical care. To me, this encapsulates Israel. They are able to put all conflict and rivalry aside to do a mitzvah.

WEEK DEDICATED TO ACTS OF LOVING KINDNESS

TIKKUN OLAM IN THE COMMUNITY

Our students spent a week volunteering in the community during Tikkun Olam week. Our senior students went to Moisson Montreal, Canada’s largest food bank, and The Welcome Hall Mission, to help their volunteer teams prepare food packages which are delivered to the needy every day. Our junior students prepared cards to share their respect and gratitude for various members of our community and for the staff and patients/families at Save a Child’s Heart in Israel. Our youngest students

CROSSING THE CURRICULUM PARSHAT HASHAVUAH

At Talmud Torah, Parashat Hashavua learning is not limited to brief, isolated instruction every Friday. The ideas of the weekly Torah portion are infused into other areas of the curriculum so that students create more connections and appreciation between the world of Torah text and the rest of the world around them. Students experience the centrality and connectedness of Torah though diverse experiences and exposures.

Students engage in activities related to Parashat Hashavua with other teachers in addition to the Kodesh teacher. Parasha posters and challenge questions are posted each week in the hallways and in the parent newsletter. Pre-planned activities allow General Studies teachers to reinforce the content and concepts of the Parasha. The students see that Torah surrounds them in their everyday lives breaking down walls between Limudei Kodesh and General Studies.

Students created learning products using seven predetermined connections to seven parashiot between Bereshit and Pekudei creating an extraordinary exhibit showcasing their cross curricular learning. The exhibition led visitors through the journey of the Jewish People’s development as seen in the narratives of Breishit and Shmot, and the growth of the students’ learning.

Overall, this event provided an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the moon and its role in both scientific and Jewish contexts. It also allowed them to connect their knowledge of the natural world with their religious and cultural traditions.

SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS PRESENTED AT LOCAL SCIENCE FAIR 150

INSPIRATION FOR TOMORROW SCIENCE FAIR

At Talmud Torah | Herzliah we believe that students learn best by doing. This learning approach is most evident in our highly anticipated and extremely successful annual science fair. Students in all levels spend a year researching and exploring a myriad of topics in an effort to understand, analyze and question real life scientific dilemmas. Herzliah showcased over 100 innovative and forwardthinking projects at the school science fair which were judged by experts in various scientific fields of study. Ten projects went on to the Super ExpoSciences Hydro-Quebec Québécoise (Provincial) 2023, which were all recognized with prestigious awards.

Two of these projects went on to the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF).

GOLD MEDAL WINNER AT MRSTF

The elementary school science fair, all in French, was an exciting event where young students displayed their scientific projects to friends, family, and the wider community. From building simple machines to exploring the effects of different liquids on plant growth, the students demonstrated their enthusiasm for science and their dedication to learning.

The audience was impressed by the level of creativity and the depth of knowledge shown by the young scientists, and many were inspired by the potential for future innovation. The science fair was a great opportunity for the students to showcase their skills and interests, and for the community to see the importance of science education in nurturing young minds. It was a joyful celebration of curiosity and learning, and a proud moment for all involved.

COMPETITIVE SPORTS TEAMS

ATHLETICS

TEAM, RESPECT AND PRIDE

At Les écoles Azrieli we are committed to educating the Leaders of Tomorrow. Participation in athletics provides opportunities outside of the classroom for natural leaders to expand their skills and for developing leaders to gain confidence. Our Athletics program is based on two overarching perspectives. The first is the physical development and the honing of motor skills. The second is athletics as a vehicle for Jewish values, Jewish expression and Jewish leadership.

Athletics is about developing as a whole human being, as a member of a team, and as a learner who is coachable, committed and willing to challenge himself (or herself) and who is ready and willing to take risks. The important Jewish values of Respect (Kavod), Pride (Ga’avah), Joy (Rinah), Compassion (Lev Tov) and Jewish Peoplehood (Amiut Yehudit) are cultivated throughout the programs. We see the playing field as a forum for exploring Jewish behaviours in an authentic space. There are few endeavours in life that require and develop critical life skills more than competitive sports. Teamwork on the court mirrors the Chevruta approach of learning which encourages friendship, shared responsibility and shared achievement--authentic opportunities for social and emotional learning.

In 2023, Herzliah Athletics experienced impressive growth. With 25 highly competitive teams, the school embraced the value of inclusivity in sports by launching the innovative Pro Skills program. This unique offering provided high-level coaching sessions for both novice and advanced athletes, reinforcing the importance of skill development in sports. To further foster a sense of community involvement, Herzliah Athletics introduced several new events, such as the father-son and motherdaughter basketball evenings, the Women in Sports panel, and the end-of-year 3x3 basketball tournament. In addition to promoting teamwork and camaraderie, the intramural leagues offered a fun and exciting way for all to engage in daily exercise, complete with real-life budgets, drafts, trades, statistics, and rankings.

12

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT TALMUD TORAH

Movement and healthy habits plays a vital role in promoting the overall development of young students. At Talmud Torah we focus on improving physical fitness, motor skills, and cultivating a healthy lifestyle through a variety of activities and sports such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, dancing, and team sports. Our kindergarten classes have recently incorporated yoga into their curriculum, and the outcomes have been exceptional. Experienced educators lead these programs with an emphasis on not only enhancing physical abilities but also fostering social, emotional, and cognitive growth. Our students benefit from collaborative work, learning sportsmanship and fair play, and gaining self-confidence through participation in these programs. This year, we are proud to announce the addition of a grade 5 basketball team that participated in a Jewish Day School tournament. We are excited and eager to expand our sports offerings each year.

for Seniors to plant, tend and harvest Herzliah’s rooftop Green Thumb Garden. The primary goal of this multigenerational initiative is for students to see the garden as a metaphor for their ability to repair the world. The project has provided a hands-on learning opportunity for our students in areas of horticulture, environmental sciences, scientific innovations, mathematics and community responsibility, all in the context of the fragility of our world. In a world that puts great value on speed and the wonder of technology, our seniors have inspire our students with a more balanced approach, by underscoring the satisfaction and beauty inherent in working with one’s hands and seeing the fruits of one’s labours.

Our garden has become a source of fresh produce which is sold in farmer’s market type sales, the proceeds of which goes to local food banks.

If ever we could think of ways of breaking down stereotypes the generations have of one another, it would be to offer more opportunities for them to share meaningful projects such as the Green Thumb Garden Project! All is brought back to the essence of giving, sharing and enjoying each other’s company! Of course, getting your hands dirty helps as well!

As a retired school nurse I always looked forward to Thursday morning. I would be at Herzliah High School with an extremely friendly staff along with very eager students on the rooftop garden. Planting, watering, weeding was on the schedule. It was a huge success and yielded a large crop of vegetables.

They were sold at a market at Herzliah and the money was given to community groups. We all are hoping to be able to carry this intergenerational project forward for the next year. It gave both seniors and teenagers the opportunity to connect with one another in a concrete and meaningful way.

THE MUFFIN BOUTIQUE

MITZVAH MADIM

The Muffin Boutique is a bakery in Jerusalem which offers home-made muffins, bagels and coffee. For the past few years, we have partnered with this wonderful shop to raise funds to distribute free muffins and coffee to Israeli soldiers. In honour of Yom HaZikaron, Talmud Torah families raised $1,000 and wrote 300 personal cards to soldiers. These heartfelt cards are given to each soldier along with their free muffin and coffee.

If you find yourselves on Ben Yehudah Street in Jerusalem, please drop in to the Muffin Boutique to say hello to former Montrealers and owners of the bakery, Shmarya and Lainie Richler. https://www. muffinboutique.com/

My name is Max Miller. I am currently an active soldier in the IDF. A few days ago, I walked into a bakery on Ben Yehudah Street in Jerusalem to buy some food on my way back to base. Upon noticing my uniform, I was given a free muffin and coffee; but more importantly, I received a note from Ben Fhima in Class 5A. The note now sits proudly on my desk on base, and I have the privilege of seeing it every time I sit down to work and am reminded of what I’m doing here in Israel and who I’m doing it for.

So to Ben, Class 5A, and all of Talmud Torah, thank you for encouraging us to keep working hard in the Israeli army. What we do here would be impossible without your cheerleading and love from afar.

2000

I am awed by our incredibly generous donors who transform lives each and every day. It is they who enable quality innovative programming, support tuition assistance, fund extra-curricular student opportunities, sponsor school events and ensure the sustainability of our beloved schools through endowments. It is our donors who allow us to dream the dreams and ensure that we realize them and it is our students who are the beneficiaries.

Our annual campaign was a resounding success, with the support of our community allowing us to continue to provide exceptional learning opportunities for our students. The inaugural Day of Giving was a highlight of the year, with a record-breaking amount of funds raised in just 24 hours. These funds will be used to support critical programs and initiatives that directly benefit our students and teachers.

We are also grateful for the grants that we received from various foundations, which allowed us to expand our programs and enhance the learning experience for our students. These grants enable us to offer additional resources, opportunities, and experiences that would not have been possible otherwise.

While we continue our efforts for successful annual campaigns, our fundraising strategies now include important considerations for tomorrow - for the future generations of Talmud Torah | Herzliah students.

For over one hundred and twenty five years, Talmud Torah | Herzliah has proudly been inspiring academic excellence, encouraging personal growth and developing strong Jewish identity in our students. Through conversations with our loyal donors, we have come to realize that they too want to see a bright Jewish future for generations of Talmud Torah | Herzliah students. They too are eager to ensure that the school continues to thrive for years to come, supporting generations of Jewish youth on their journeys to becoming the creative and innovative Jewish leaders of tomorrow. While we always understood our responsibility to ensure the continuity of this tradition, which has served the Montreal Jewish community so well, we now have a new and effective tool to help us achieve our goalsEndowment and Legacy giving.

In short, your investment in our school has a transformative impact on the lives of our students and the wider community. Your support helps us to turn dreams into reality and empowers our students to achieve their full potential.
