REFLECTING ON A YEAR OF GROWTH AND GRATITUDE

As we conclude this academic year, I am reminded of the profound Jewish principle, “Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh,” which signifies the unbroken totality of Jewish existence and the intrinsic importance of every individual within our community. This concept underscores a fundamental truth – that each of us, simply by being part of the Jewish people, bears a responsibility for the well-being of one another.

This year presented significant challenges that tested our resilience and unity, notably the events of October 7th and the troubling rise in local antisemitism. These circumstances reinforced our need for vigilance and solidarity, yet it was our community’s strength that illuminated our path through these trials.

Reflecting on the year, my heart is full of immense gratitude and pride. It was a year of remarkable achievements and deepened connections within our community. Our students have not only excelled academically but have also shone in various arenas, earning top honors in moot court competitions, science fairs, and Bible contests, to name a few. They have actively volunteered within the Montreal Jewish community and beyond, showing unwavering support for Israel through various deeds and fundraising efforts. Their leadership and initiative have been outstanding.

These accomplishments are not solely a reflection of their hard work but also of the steadfast support of our staff. Our dedicated staff and administration have fostered an environment where students not only thrive academically but also embody our shared values of solidarity and community.

Similarly, our committed parents have played a crucial role in supporting this nurturing environment. Their ongoing involvement, encouragement, and partnership have been instrumental in ensuring that our students develop a strong sense of mutual respect and support.

I also wish to extend a special thank you to our Board of Directors, particularly to our President, Ouriel Soudry, for their visionary leadership and unwavering support throughout this challenging yet rewarding year.

Thank you for being an integral part of this enriching journey. Your involvement as parents, students, and donors has been essential in driving our numerous initiatives, helping us reach beyond our school walls to foster a spirit of responsibility and connection.

As we look ahead to the new academic year, let us continue to embrace our shared values of responsibility, resilience, and connection, confident that together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those around us.

Wishing you all a peaceful and restorative summer.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

As we conclude this academic year and my term as President, I am filled with enthusiasm reflecting on the significant strides we’ve made and the visionary path we’ve embarked upon with the initiation of our 3 to 5-year strategic plan. This plan is more than a blueprint for growth; it represents the embodiment of our collective aspirations and our unwavering commitment to achieving new heights of excellence. Every administrator and staff member is diligently focused on its implementation.

I am proud to highlight key strategic goals at the core of our plan:

Investment in People: Our top priority is to deepen our investment in our faculty, professional leaders, and lay leaders, ensuring they are equipped to serve our Azrieli Talmud Torah | Herzliah community with distinction. We recognize that the strength of our institution lies in the expertise and dedication of our people.

Culture of Engagement and Respect: We are dedicated to nurturing a school culture rooted in respect, engagement, and a strong sense of identity. This includes building robust relationships, fostering a shared commitment to celebrating our successes, and instilling school pride.

French Excellence: Recognizing the importance of multilingual proficiency in today’s global landscape, we aim to enhance our French language program. Our goal is to ensure that all students achieve excellence in French oral communication, reading, and writing, within our outstanding trilingual learning environment.

Judaic Studies, Jewish Life and Hebrew: Strengthen the quality and relevance of the Judaic studies, Jewish life, and Hebrew programs in order to cultivate engaged, knowledgeable graduates who are committed to Jewish values, traditions, and Israel.

Sustainability and Financial Viability: To ensure the long-term viability of our school, we are focusing on strengthening our financial position. This encompasses enhancing our fundraising efforts, exploring alternative revenue streams, and investing in our facilities. I am thrilled to report that our project for a new Talmud Torah facility at the YM YWHA has been approved by the City Council.

As we implement this strategic plan, we are guided by our core values and a vision that seeks to elevate every aspect of our institution. This plan is a commitment to creating a legacy of innovation, leadership, and excellence. Your support and dedication have been instrumental in the development of this plan, and I am confident that together, we will achieve remarkable success in the years to come. We are on a path to achieving great milestones and building an even stronger, more vibrant community.

It has been a true honor and privilege to lead our beloved institution over the past two years alongside a team of dedicated board members. I remain in awe of the commitment and tireless efforts of our remarkable Head of School, Michelle Toledano, her administrative team, and the exceptional teachers who impact the lives of our children every day.

With sincere appreciation and excitement for the future,

Ouriel Soudry ‘91 ‘96

TRI4KFARAZZA

the tragic events of October 7 . Embracing this idea, our school has pledged its support to Kfar Azza, a kibbutz that faced immense loss on that day.

While fully comprehending their pain may be beyond our grasp, we are committed to providing multifaceted support - in the immediate, medium, and long term. Our approach involves spreading our light: cultivating deep connections between our students and theirs, our professionals and theirs, and our families and theirs, with the aim of establishing enduring emotional bonds.

Spearheaded by our students, a unique “triathlon” encompassing swimming, biking, and running –all for the benefit of Kfar Azza was planned. On April 10th and 11th, student, parent and staff teams raised $44,000 to help fund the psychological and therapeutic needs of the children.

Our robust Israel Engagement program at Talmud Torah and Herzliah is a pillar of our education. Clearly, the students are internalizing the numerous Israel advocacy messages we are transmitting, putting into action their love and support of our homeland.

RAISED FOR KIBBUTZ KFAR AZZA $44,000

SONGS OF INCLUSION

In honour of Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month (JDAIM), the Talmud Torah Bnot Mitzvah, in collaboration with members of the Shira Choir, embarked on a journey to explore the true meaning of diversity and inclusion. During the course of the JDAIM month, the group worked together toward a common goal, performing in front of family and friends.

The month long initiative culminated in a compelling evening of music, art, and inclusivity. The group sang together with pride, painted together with purpose and learned from and with each other. The “Songs of Inclusion” event powerfully showcased Azrieli Talmud Torah’s vision for an inclusive world.

Every speech, performance, and collaborative art piece reinforced the message that every voice is significant, every story is valuable, and every individual mirrors the Divine. There was not a dry eye in the room. The event not only impacted the attendees profoundly but also set a new standard for future initiatives in building a more compassionate, understanding, and inclusive community.

We are immensely grateful to Federation CJA for your support and look forward to many more meaningful endeavors.

BLUE METROPOLIS: LOOKING BACK FOR A BETTER FUTURE

Herzliah was selected by the Literary Foundation, Blue Metropolis, as one of five schools to participate in a province-wide project titled, “Looking Back for a Better Future”. For this project, students were paired with senior groups to learn about resilience from elderly participants.

Herzliah’s Secondary IV students from Ms. Brown’s English class were paired with Holocaust Survivors at the Cummings Centre, who meet regularly on Tuesdays at “Cafe Europa”. The goal was for students to meet with the seniors, hear their stories, and write about them, focusing on resilience.

Over three visits, the students heard the survivors’ tales of growing up, survival, immigration, and family life, building meaningful connections through their conversations.

Before the first visit, author Monique Polak conducted an interviewing and journaling workshop with the students to prepare them. The initial meeting was cautious but went so well that additional visits were eagerly scheduled. This interaction provided students with invaluable living history lessons and came in the immediate wake of October 7th, drawing poignant parallels between the Holocaust and the recent surge in antisemitism. The survivors’ emotional stories deeply impacted the students, igniting their strength and pride in being Jewish.

The Blue Metropolis Foundation created a documentary about the project, featuring Herzliah students and other participants across Quebec, highlighting the touching relationships formed with the seniors at Cafe Europa.

SOWING THE FUTURE

We have been focused on actively strengthening the collaboration between our elementary school and our high school. To that end, we initiated the project, Sowing the Future

The project involves developing automated greenhouses containing tomato plants grown from seeds from the Tomatosphere project (Let’s Talk Science). The aim of the project is based on integrating STEM from preschool to Grade 10 in a multidisciplinary project. Courses in science, mathematics, French, English, Hebrew, and art are involved at various educational levels. Developed by Fanny Langin (Technology Integration Specialist in Education at TT and Herzliah), Robert Cardinal (kindergarten teacher at TT), and Bertin Sénéchal (Head of the Science Department at Herzliah), this project allows us to strengthen collaboration between our elementary school (TT) and our high school (Herzliah) and is part of the digital action plan in teaching and higher education (Ministry of Education 2018 to 2023).

The project started on February 6, 2024. Kindergarten and Grade 10 students were responsible for automating the greenhouse. The kindergarteners aimed to prepare the seedlings to be placed in the greenhouse before the high school students took over for the second part of the project. The kindergarteners built two robots using the Lego Robotics WeDo 2.0 kits:

one that pushes the soil into the pots, and the other that drops the seeds into each pot.

Once the seedlings were ready for the greenhouse, the Grade 10 students proposed systems capable of detecting soil moisture to trigger the automatic irrigation system when the seedlings needed it, and to program lights so that the seedlings were always in optimal conditions. Several systems were tested by the students to achieve these objectives. The system had to be operational before April 19, as the school would be closed for 10 days, and the seedlings would not survive without watering.

From the moment the seedlings were planted, all levels from preschool to high school were involved in observing the tomato plants in different academic subjects. Daily observations were made: photos and drawings in art class, bar charts and Cartesian plans in mathematics, descriptive and scientific texts in French, English, and Hebrew, and work on the scientific method in science. Each school level was involved in the project in at least one academic subject.

By mid-May, the seedlings were planted in the schools’ gardens by the kindergarteners and the high school environmental club, and daily observations continued. The results were finalized and sent to Let’s Talk Science. We will taste the tomatoes with the students in September 2024.

LEARNING FROM OUR ALUMNI

Recognizing the professional achievements and commitment to the community of our alumni not only highlights the success of our institution but also fuels our motivation to continuously provide the best for every student. It is crucial that our students have access to a diverse range of opportunities to learn from the experiences and expertise of our graduates. Many of our alumni are already deeply involved with the school as guest speakers, mentors, judges, and coaches, actively contributing to the rich educational environment we strive to maintain.

This past year, we launched a monthly career panel, showcasing various professions and providing practical insights into each field. Who better to lead these discussions than our own alumni, who include accomplished engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and professionals from other sectors? This initiative not only enhances

our curriculum but also strengthens the connection between our current students and our distinguished alumni network.

By bringing together current students and alumni, we create a dynamic learning environment that inspires and educates. The shared experiences and professional insights of our alumni provide students with valuable guidance and motivation, preparing them for their future careers and fostering a strong sense of community and continuity within our school.

MOOT COURT

Once again, the students of Herzliah High School demonstrated their exceptional intellectual prowess and commitment to Jewish values by participating in the Annual Maimonides International Moot Beit Din Competition. The competition commenced at Herzliah, where five teams showcased their extensive research and persuasive arguments before a distinguished judging council (Rabbi Claman (TBDJ), Rabbi Ellis (Spanish and Portuguese), Rabbi Bright (Shaare Zedek), and Rabba Cahana (Shaar HaShomayim)). This year’s case centered around the intricate ethical considerations surrounding the management of data collection in the context of the privacy of individuals. Drawing from a wide array of biblical sources, our students crafted compelling arguments rooted in Jewish values and law.

The quality of our students’ presentations was outstanding, earning three teams places at the international level of the competition in Baltimore.

1 STUDENT REPRESENTING CANADA IN ISRAEL AT INTERNATIONAL CHIDON HATANACH COMPETITION

Participating in the Shabbaton, where they engaged with peers from around the globe, was a particularly enriching experience for our students. Their hard work and dedication culminated in a sweeping victory, as Herzliah secured first, second, and third place.

We are immensely proud of our students’ accomplishments and their ability to delve deeply into relevant Torah discussions, offering unique perspectives and insightful analyses. Their outstanding performance and commitment to intellectual rigor exemplify the essence of our school’s mission in nurturing critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and a profound connection to Jewish tradition.

CONGRATULATIONS! GOLD, SILVER & BRONZE IN INTERNATIONAL MOOT COURT

YOUNG AUTHORS

Our Young Author’s event was built around the theme of Israel. Our entire school body took a virtual trip to Israel and explored diverse subjects and topics in all three languages. From packing lists for their suitcases, exploring famous Israeli inventors, creating Israeli menus, exploring the historical timeline of events that led to Israel’s creation, to exploring the tourist attractions around the Israelopoli game board It was an unforgettable trip!

Our major event, “Young Authors,” embodies the very essence of our commitment to promoting

literacy within our school. During this memorable evening, all students, from kindergarten to grade 6, had the opportunity to present their writing, oral communication, and art projects. Each student addressed a specific topic from different perspectives, demonstrating the richness of our diversity and creativity. This celebration perfectly illustrates our desire to cultivate in our students a love for languages while encouraging them to express their ideas and artistic talents.

SPORTS

Sports play a vital role in education, contributing to the physical, social, and emotional development of our students. This year has been remarkable for our sports programs at Herzliah, showcasing both growth and success. Our Bantam Boys Basketball team emerged as champions, while the Juvenile Boys team reached the semifinals in the top division. Impressively, five out of our six basketball teams made it to the playoffs. Additionally, we expanded our sports offerings by adding two more volleyball teams, a Juvenile Boys Baseball team, and a Cadet Girls Flag Football team.

A standout example of student initiative was the formation of the baseball team, led by Avrum Busgang and Noah Liebman. They recruited players and coaches, including Neesa Harroche, who has over 15 years of coaching experience. The team of 13 players competed fiercely, narrowly losing their final game 5-6 against the top team in their league. Our swimming program, highlighted by 12 weeks of professional lessons by Cindy Bassel at the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA, prepared students for the GMAA swim competitions, with one student achieving impressive 5th and 6th place finishes.

BANTAM BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS

We also reinstated our soccer team, which participated in Division 3 of the GMAA. Although they won one out of four games, the team showed great dedication and spirit. Our Juvenile Boys Volleyball team expanded from one team to three, adding cadet girls and juvenile girls teams.

We hosted a successful 3v3 basketball fundraiser, which not only supported our teams but also fostered community spirit. Additionally, we introduced developmental flag football sessions for Sec 1 boys and Proskills Volleyball training to enhance our athletes’ skills. Our running program, with outdoor and indoor practices from October to May, saw students compete in the Halo Road Race and the Cross Country Run, showcasing their dedication and progress.

Through these initiatives, we continue to emphasize the importance of sports in education, fostering a holistic environment where students can thrive academically, physically, and socially. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our sports programs this year. We look forward to continued growth and achievement in the future.
