history & Distribution History AWOL is the free weekly local paper for Hua Hin and the surrounding areas that was launched as part of the Observer Group in October 2008, and in January 2009 was taken over by the staff and since then run as a completely separate business. It is designed to be an easy to read, fun paper with a mixture of local and international, real (and possibly not) stories and sports, as well as the features you would expect in an English tabloid. It is aimed to have a broad appeal much like a tabloid, and this is reflected in our tag line, ‘For the expat in all of us’. In December 2009 AWOL launched its own website, to offer an even more enticing package for both readers and advertisers alike, giving advertisers access to thousands more readers online and the opportunity to extend their message beyond Hua Hin to the rest of the world. In 2010 the website was expanded to include a discussion forum and a variety of other entertaining pages with different content to the print version. In 2011 we launched our own Property section to accommodate requests from both readers and local agents for a platform to buy and sell property. There is also an online classifieds section which complements our printed classified adverts. Further sections have been introduced over time and the website now comprises the following; AWOLonline, Property, Classifieds, Forum, Directory, Business, Motoring, Travel and our recently launched Design section. Advertisers in the printed AWOL can be included on the website as part of their deal on request but please read the section on online advertising towards the back of this guide. In October 2016 the paper passed two significant milestones, as it published the 400th issue of the paper and passed eight years of operation. This coincided with a major redesign of the paper.
Distribution AWOL is distributed every Friday afternoon and evening in hard copy, and is also available to download or read online via our website, Facebook, Issuu, and MediaFire. Online copies account for a significant extra readership on top of the printed version, and our estimated total readership is between 4,000 and 5,000 every week. The normal print run is between 800 and 1000 copies per week and it is produced in black and white only. AWOL normally has between 24 and 40 pages depending on advertising demand and time of year. AWOL is distributed to bars, cafes, hotels, restaurants and other outlets (around 200 as of November 2016) across the Hua Hin and surrounding areas, and is the only weekly publication currently available in English, which gives it unrivalled flexibility and immediacy compared to other competing publications. We are constantly adjusting our distribution to account for new advertisers and perceived gaps in the market to ensure the greatest exposure for our advertisers and convenient availability for readers.
Advert sizes and prices The next few pages show what standard sizes of advert are available in AWOL. Each box shows the dimensions, and prices for set numbers of issues. All prices are applicable from 1st October 2015 and are only available with payment in advance. Should an advertiser want less than a four week run the charge will be significantly higher per week due to the time required to alter the layout, and negotiated on a per advert basis. Advert design, if necessary, is included in these prices. Advert content can be altered at any time for no extra charge, and requests for page position and number will be accommodated whenever possible. Premiums are applicable to adverts on the front and back pages as well as page three, as follows: Front page - additional 20%; Back page and page 3 - additional 10%.

display ads awol bazaar Introduced in 2016, the AWOL Bazaar is a page or more in the newspaper split into a number of identical size boxes, each 45 mm wide by 31 mm high. A full page contains 32 boxes. These can be used individually or in blocks to give every business the opportunity to get seen in AWOL. We encourage groups of small businesses to club together to get the best deal, or for entrepreneurs to buy up blocks of space and sell them on at a profit, within our own price guide below. awol noticeboard Introduced in 2013, the AWOL Noticeboard is a section in the printed newspaper which has four basic ‘note’ style adverts as if pinned to a cork board, at the following rates: Small - 100 baht per week Medium - 150 baht per week Big - 300 baht per week Large - 500 baht per week All ads are a minimum of 4 weeks.
leaflets and brochures AWOL can also arrange both printing and distribution of colour or black and white leaflets or brochures; if you have your own already printed and want them inserted and distributed with the paper, we will charge 1.2 baht per leaflet per week, with a minimum charge equivalent to the print run at that time; if you want the leaflet/brochure designed and printed by us they can be distributed free inside the paper – price for design and printing is dependent on size, paper and other variables, so please contact us with your specifications so we can give you a quote.
other ads Classified adverts AWOL has a Classifieds section, which has a basic standard price for individuals or businesses to place small ads. For those wishing to place multiple ads over time, we also offer special packages, and we also offer Featured ads which appear at the top of each section with a box around them, optionally shaded. Prices are as follows: 1. Single advert (25 words or less) for 13 issues 300 baht
2. Basic Subscription allowing up to 12 Single ads for 13 issues each. 1200 baht 3. Extra Subscription allowing up to 36 Single ads for 13 issues each. 2700 baht 4. Extra Plus Subscription allowing up to 72 Single ads of 13 issues each. 3600 baht Adverts of longer than 25 words will either require purchasing further Single ads in the case of option 1, or using more of the ads in the subscription pack. The same applies to wishing to run an advert for longer than 13 weeks/issues, and this is where the subscription packs work out as great value, as the Basic pack would allow for three ads to run for one year, or six ads to run for six months, for example. Any advert can be made a Featured ad by either paying an additional fee, in the case of Single ads, of two additional ads, or by using up two additional ads in a subscription pack. So for a Single ad that costs 300 baht, to make this Featured will cost an additional 600 baht, making a total of 900 baht. This additional fee or use of pack ads remains the same regardless of the number of words in the ad.
Telephone numbers, email addresses and web addresses will all be counted as one word each. Details of how to place a classified ad can be found in AWOL. Online classifieds are included in the above prices but must be placed by the customer. Any ads placed online will be included in the next available printed issue as long as the ads are acceptable and paid for when required.
website advertising All long term advertisers in the printed AWOL are entitled to free advertising on our website as part of their package. Long term is defined as anyone who continually advertises, or books an advert for longer than 26 issues. The free advert is limited to the small rectangle detailed below. The AWOL sites receive over 200 unique visitors a day (266 daily average in 2015), with over 7,500 daily page views (average from January to July 2016), so placing an advert on our pages can be highly effective. Adverts can be placed on any of our sub-sites – AWOLonline, Forum, Classifieds, Property, Directory, Travel, Motoring, Business or Design – or all of them if you choose the appropriate package. We offer three basic sizes – a small rectangle (160 x 160 pixels), a banner (728 x 90 pixels) or a skyscraper (160 x 600 pixels). AWOL is only printed in black and white so please bear that in mind when supplying any logos or images - we can alter colour images for you but some may not look as you planned if they were created in colour. Images need to be at least 150 dots per inch in resolution for print purposes but again we can help to source or alter images. Any images, text or alterations for adverts need to be sent by close of business on the Tuesday prior to that Friday’s issue to be certain of being included, and earlier if the advertiser wants to be able to see an example of the advert before it goes to print. other information & collaborations Over the years AWOL has established connections with a number of other local concerns, and we are always open to working with anyone to both help customers have great promotional possibilities available, and to improve our own and any partners prospects. Currently we are working with the local radio station, Surf 102.5 FM and Lucky Real Estate. Examples of the collaborations we have engaged in in the past have been with property agents and developers, other media concerns, charities and local event organisers. Please contact us if you would like to negotiate a long term partnership with AWOL. Examples of the type of deals possible are reciprocal promotion (e.g. free coverage of an event in return for promotion of AWOL), vouchers from a business as part payment for advertising, joint advertising packages with other media offering better value for advertisers, and free advert in AWOL in return for distribution of the printed paper (e.g. on a regular transport service such as a bus or flight). We believe that AWOL will work in places other than Hua Hin, in and beyond Thailand, and our readers tell us that their friends and colleagues love it when they take some ‘home’. So if you would like to expand the AWOL name to another place and run it as either a franchise or partnership, we would love to hear from you. The benefits of expanding the brand would be manifold, but in particular it would offer an advertising platform of more interest to larger companies, as well as offering an even better platform for local concerns who wish to be known further afield, such as small hotels and guesthouses, and the business as a whole would benefit from economies of scale, such as printing, accounting and other similar costs. However a location outside of Thailand may incur some additional charges, such as licensing, and printing would probably need to be carried out locally, depending on the location. A franchisee or partner does not necessarily need to be located in the area they wish to produce AWOL, but they would require local staff for local stories, sales and distribution, which would enable a foreign business partner to avoid the necessity of a work permit for themself, as the newspaper itself could be compiled at the existing AWOL offices from information provided by the local staff. Approximately one third of the paper could remain the same, with two thirds requiring local adverts and content. However these proportions would change with larger companies choosing to advertise in all localities. The aim is to have a 50/50 split between content and advertising; currently (2nd December 2016) this is approximately 58/42 but changes weekly. Our pricing would remain the same for advertising in only one location, but extra fees would be due to feature in all versions produced.
