air asia to fly from hua hin to kuala lumpur from may

•After • some doubts as to whether it would ever happen, Air Asia announced last Wednesday that flights hua hin

between Hua Hin and Kuala Lumpur would begin in May this year, some five months later than originally reported last year. Unfortunately the press release was too late for us to include last week. There will initially be four flights a week in both directions, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, with flights departing Hua Hin at 11:30am and arriving in Kuala Lumpur at 2:35pm local time, a flight time of just over two hours. Flights from Malaysia will depart at 10:00am, and arriving at 11:00am in Hua Hin. There was a promotional offer price of 990 baht one way for flights booked before 4th March for travel between the launch date of 18th May and 26th October this year, but there are a variety of still low prices available via the Air Asia website, ranging from around 1100 to 1500 baht, although certain periods are commanding fares up to the 3000 baht mark. Many of the flights originating in Malaysia appear to be virtually sold out. The flights are expected to use Airbus A320 aircraft which can carry up to 180 passengers. There will be no free checked baggage, and a limit of 7kg plus dimension restrictions for carry on baggage, but you will be able to purchase additional baggage allowance. Rumours abound that the airline will add further routes, with Hong Kong being touted as a strong possibility, but no doubt this will at least partially depend on how successful the inaugural route is, but the Air Asia website actually has Bangkok’s Don Muang airport listed as a route from Hua Hin, although no flights can be booked to that destination, so this may be just an error. While few people will want to see the town and its attractions swamped by mass tourism, most will want to see the town become more prosperous, and additional routes would aid this.

IS HIRING!

We are the only weekly newspaper in this area and we are looking for two motivated and engaging people to work in the key areas of sales and distribution. Requirements: • Thai Nationals • Good understanding of spoken and written English • Well presented • Previous experience in a sales environment useful but not a necessity • Ability to work to deadlines • Own transport (not essential but preferred) The positions will involve selling advertising space in the newspaper and online as the major task, as well as maintaining relations with existing customers and dealing with renewals of ads, and coordinating and monitoring the efficient distribution of the paper every week. Conditions: The positions are full time jobs but the hours and days worked are very flexible; this is not a normal 9 to 5 Monday to Friday office job as many existing and potential customers work irregular hours. The initial salary offered to the successful candidates will vary depending on previous experience and abilities, but will be in the range of 10000 to 15000 baht a month, plus any extra commission earned through performance. There will be sales targets which if achieved will generate this extra income. We anticipate this could result in an income averaging at least 20000 baht a month, with exceptional candidates capable of earning much more. Application: Please send an email to info@awolonline.net with the subject line “Employment Application” and include your reasons for wanting to work for AWOL, your previous work history, your personal details including phone number and address, and any other information you believe is relevant to your application.

new driver Martin had just received his brand new driver license. The family troops out to the driveway, and climbs in the car, where he is going to take them for a ride for the first time. Dad immediately heads for the back seat, directly behind the newly minted driver. “I’ll bet you’re back there to get a change of scenery after all those months of sitting in the front passenger seat teaching me how to drive,” says the beaming boy to his father. “Nope,” comes dad’s reply, “I’m gonna sit here and kick the back of your seat as you drive, just like you’ve been doing to me all these years.”

tom An explosion last week killed a wild-living navy boiler man and he found himself in hell. Being used to stoking fires and extremely hot temperatures, he found hell actually quite comfortable. When Satan went to check out the new arrival, he found him sitting in his room smiling. “You like this?” Satan asked. “Yes, sir,” said the sailor, “this feels like a spring day to me.” Not wanting the new guy to be too comfortable, Satan turned up the heat a bit. When he went back the next day to see how his new arrival was doing, the sailor was still happy; he hadn’t even broken a sweat. “I like this kind of weather,” he told Satan. For the next few days, Satan turned up the heat more and more, but each day the Sailor looked as comfortable as ever. By Sunday, Satan decided to try something different. Rather than turn up the heat even more, he turned it off and turned on the air conditioning. Icicles formed in the sailor’s room! When he checked on the guy, the room was icy and he was shivering, but he had a grin from ear to ear, bigger than ever. Satan was exasperated! “Why are YOU so happy?” he demanded from the sailor. “It’s FREEZING in here!” “Well, I’m from North London,” said the sailor, “and evidently Arsene Wenger has just been sacked!”

The next time I see you, you will have lost at least 5 pounds.” When the blonde returned, she shocked the doctor by losing nearly 20 pounds. “Why, that’s amazing!” the doctor said, “Did you follow my instructions?” The blonde nodded. “I’ll tell you though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day.” “From hunger, you mean?” “No, from skipping.”

so cool One record in particular got a lot of airplay last week in the UK. Unsurprisingly it was Foreigners’ ‘Cold as Ice’. We also became the butt of jokes from Scandinavia and Canada, where people can’t understand why the UK grinds to a halt when anything more than a light dusting of the white stuff falls. So for any Scandinavian and Canadian readers out there I will let you into a secret - neither can we. There was of course the added problem of high winds when the Beast from the East struck, but when even a road gritting lorry slides into a ditch you have to wonder what is going on. On the plus side we weren’t feeling as cold as a Japanese Mongee banana. This delicacy is created by freezing the banana to minus 60 degrees centigrade, which makes the skin edible, as well as helping to reduce the number of banana skin related accidents. And the snow did help Yorkshires’ finest bust a cannabis farm in Keighley, when they noticed that the building it occupied was the only one with no snow on its’ roof. On a lighter note it’s Happy Birthday to Barbie, who made her debut on March 9th 1959 and doesn’t look a day older, and is always prepared for any kind of weather. Exactly 3 years earlier, in 1956, the first UK telephone weather service began in London, and despite 24 hour TV, radio and internet access to weather reports there is still a demand for that type of service in some parts of the world. Back in this part of the world again, with no apologies to the Sisterhood, is a short story about skirts. One of my early jobs in my teens was in the engineering department of a large pharmaceutical and household manufacturer. You will all be familiar with it’s products. Being an engineering department back then it was, apart from me, populated by men, with the only female job in it being the maintenance of all things office. This involved frequent trips up a steep open metalwork staircase to where the typists lived. The engineers of course took great delight in standing at the bottom of the staircase whenever they could, but they were a good crowd. It was just a bit of fun as far as we were all concerned - nothing that a thick pair of tights or a longer skirt couldn’t overcome in the days when trousers were not appropriate wear for women in offices. Unfortunately last week a similar issue involving a female presenter on the BBCs Newsnight programme caused her a bit of a problem when the presenters desk was removed. Emily Maitliss was left feeling so exposed that she is reported to have asked cameramen (or should that be camerapersons?) not to

zoom in on her knickers. Get a grip Emily - last time I looked women are now allowed to wear trousers in the work place.

On This Day

Finally a general knowledge question. Which came first, the Beatles or the Ford Mustang? If, like me, you thought the Mustang must be older, you would be wrong. The Beatles began their first British tour on March 9th 1963, as the support act for Tommy Roe and Chris Montez. It wasn’t until a year later that the first Mustang was produced, on the same date in 1964. Next week we take a look at who will be invited to THAT wedding, and the worst memorabilia of the event.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... Get the upper hand Take a dominant position. Various suggestions have been made as to the origin of ‘get the upper hand’ (or ‘take the upper hand’). Prominent amongst those is that the phrase originated in American playgrounds, in the way that children select sides for impromptu baseball games. The method is for one team captain to grab the bat at the bottom, then the other captain takes hold above the first’s hand and they progress hand over hand along the bat until the top is reached - the one left holding the bat having the ‘upper hand’ and getting first choice of player for their team. A second theory is that the person whose hand is uppermost when a couple hold hands literally ‘takes the upper hand’ and is the dominant partner. Thomas Macaulay’s History of England, 1848, contains this text: Then several meetings were spent in settling how many carriages, how many horses, how many lacqueys, how many pages, each minister should be titled to bring to Ryswick; whether the serving men should carry canes; whether they should wear swords; whether they should have pistols in their holsters; who should take the upper hand in the public walks, and whose carriage should break the way in the streets.”

which predate the above by some centuries, put the emphasis on ‘upper’ rather than ‘hand’ and they indicate that ‘upper hand’ simply meant ‘above’, either higher in social status or physically above. ‘Hand’ was a synonym for possession, as in ‘in hand’, ‘hand over’ etc. The Romans used the Latin word ‘manus’, which translates into English as ‘hand’ to denote the power a husband had over his wife. The first example of ‘upper hand’ that is found in print supports that interpretation of the phrase. This is from The English And Scottish Popular Ballads, collected by Francis Child and published by him in 1882. The ballad in question is Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard, which Child believed to have originated around 1600: “A grave, a grave,” Lord Barnard cryd, “ ‘To put these lovers in; But lay my lady on the upper hand, For she came of the better kin.””

Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Email it to us on submissions@awolonline.net

It would be incorrect to assume that ‘upper hand’ was coined as a direct and literal reference to hands, and that isn’t what Macaulay was referring to. The earliest citations of the phrase,

australia World’s oldest message in a bottle found on coast of western Australia More than 131 years after being thrown overboard, the world’s oldest message in a bottle has washed up on a beach in western Australia. The bottle was found by Tonya Illman and Grace Ricciardo in the dunes near Wedge Island in January. Weeks of research and correspondence crafted a Sherlock-style web of clues that traced the historic note back to 19th century Germany. The survival of the document has been heralded as a miracle, as the bottle was found wedged in the sand and without a lid after heavy rain and strong winds on the island, some 112 miles north of Perth. Mrs Illman and her husband Kym placed the note in an oven to dry it out before unravelling it to reveal a set of coordinates and a date of 12 June 1886. Mr Illman’s German was not quite good enough to deduce much more of the text, other than the letters “aula” in a naming field, which he guessed might mean the ship was called Paula. From there the real investigative work began, and three days later the couple received confirmation from a curator of maritime archaeology at the Western Australian Museum that a boat named Paula was listed in an 1883 Lloyds Register, with a home port of Marseille. It was a 320-ton German barque ship, later found to be on a voyage from Cardiff to what is now known as Indonesia. But the French port listed in the register appeared to contradict the port written on the note, which started with an “E”. It was suggested that the vessel could have been sold to new owners after 1883 and moved to a new home, and that theory was given merit by German maritime historian Christine Porr. She advised the Illmans that one of her contacts had found mentions of Paula, along with a captain “O Diekmann”, in an 1887 journal of German Marine Meteorology. Another reference to Paula was found in an 1886 Registrar Veritas, which listed “Haverkamp” as captain, and confirmed the home port as Elsfleth in Germany. Further evidence was provided by the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, who confirmed the wording and printing were identical to messages held in their archives for the year 1886. With the Australian museum having determined that the note was “consistent with cheaply made 19th century paper”, the German agency concluded that it was genuine. As luck would have it, the note turned out to have originated

from the agency itself, which back in 1886 was known as Deutsche Seewarte. The bottle - thought to have originally held gin - was thrown overboard alongside many others during a decades-long research programme to produce drift maps. According to agency archives, the last one to have been found was picked up in Denmark in January 1934 - and it was a match for the format of the one found on the Australian coast. “This has been the most remarkable event of my life,” said Mrs Illman. “To think that this bottle has not been touched for nearly 132 years and is in perfect condition, despite the elements, beggars belief.” Her husband added: “It certainly consumed me for the first week. It was like solving a giant puzzle - and now that it’s been confirmed as legitimate, I can’t wait to share our excitement with others.” Once confirmed by Guinness World Records, it will beat the existing record for the world’s oldest message in bottle by 23 years. That was found at Amrum Island, Germany, in April 2015, more than 108 years after it was released into the North Sea by the Marine Biological Association in November 1906. A one shilling reward was offered for its return.

uk Someone tried to sell a homemade igloo online for £50,000 Someone tried to sell a homemade igloo on an online property website – for an ice cool £50,000. The cheeky builder made the most of the snow that fell for days in Burton and South Derbyshire last week. Found in Market Place, Burton, it was advertised for sale on RightMove. The sales blurb said: ‘Available for a limited period. A deceptively spacious home ideal for the outdoors type. ‘Buy now before the market hots up! Call Abode to book a viewing today before it’s gone.’ In a list of ‘key features’ it explains that the igloo has a built in fridge freezer, is fully air conditioned and even includes a modern, white interior. The small site comes complete with ‘parking for one sledge’ and the tenure, is ‘freezehold’. This expertly ‘hand built’ property has been described as a ‘very ice house’ in the description. The igloo first appeared on the property website on Thursday – but has since been removed – no doubt due to it melting as the weather became milder.

Featured Game

saturday 10th march 2018 PREMIER LEAGUE Manchester United v Liverpool 19:30 With the title all but mathematically decided, the race is on for second place, and this is a vital game in that race. Both sides have excellent attacks, but their defences have been letting them down more often, although more so for Klopp’s men. This should be an open attacking game, with both teams wanting the win while hoping that the teams below them slip up. However we think this will end in a draw, albeit a thrilling one, and the race for European positions will get tighter.

shape of wenger Celebrities wear ribbons to the Oscars to show their support for the #WengerOut movement

••

USA Actors and directors have lent their support to the #WengerOut movement by wearing red and white ribbons to last night’s Academy Awards. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood believed last night’s star-studded bash at The Dolby Theatre was the perfect platform to speak out about the injustices going on in North London. “We have to stand together and say enough is enough,” explained Mudbound star Mary J. Blige. “For too long Arsenal fans have been forced to suffer the indignity of finishing between second and fifth in the Premier League. “The warning signs were there when he signed Nelson Vivas and Amaury Bischoff, but too many people in the industry just turned a blind eye.” Gary Oldman, Willem Dafoe, Woody Harrelson and Frances McDormand were among the Tinseltown A-listers calling

Left: Guillermo Del Toro and J. Miles Dale dedicate their Oscars win to the long suffering Arsenal fans

for the Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to resign as they took to the red carpet. Best Director winner Guillermo Del Toro wore the ribbon as he accepted his Oscar for The Shape of Water, before telling the audience that it was time for Wenger to move on. He said, “I would like to thank the wonderful cast and crew I had the great privilege of working with on the movie – you did an Amazing job. Just like Arsene did for the first fifteen years of his Arsenal reign.

“But things change – well, everything except the Arsenal manager it seems.” Meryl Streep was also expected to give an impassioned speech if she had won the Best Actress award for her performance in The Post, however, she did not. “If one more Tottenham fan says ‘mind the gap’ I’m going to f***ing lose it,” the Bridges of Madison County star told friends. “It’s got to the point that I’m agreeing with Piers sodding Morgan.”
