local radio off air due to airport airwaves interference

•Several • local radio stations have been forced to turn off their transmitters in the last two weeks while hua hin

the Office of The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) investigate interference with the airports communications. Included in the stations affected has been Surf 102.5 FM, the favourite expat radio station, which is based in soi 23, and while they were informed fairly quickly that they were not at fault, as of Wednesday they had still not had permission to switch their transmitter back on. After speaking to their breakfast DJ, Steve Johnston, AWOL learned that their proximity to the airport was the reason they had to switch off, although they continue to broadcast via the internet, and readers can access the station via the TuneIn app available on mobile devices, and their new website at hotspotmediaasia.com. You can also listen when you visit the AWOL website at awolonline.net. Surf were unable to confirm as we went to print exactly when they would be back on the radio, but are obviously hoping that they will get the green light soon from the NBTC, and the station owner was due to meet them in Bangkok on Wednesday to find out more; they may well be back on by the time AWOL is published. The problem with the interference, or ‘bleeding’ as it is more commonly called, has been an intermittent one that sometimes blocks out other radio stations, and Surf has suffered from this in the past, and is often caused by illegal stations. Obviously when it impacts an airport this can be very serious, and some are speculating that this may be connected to the possible return of scheduled flights to and from Hua Hin airport, as recent reports have suggested that Air Asia will begin operations there in the near future. AWOL will obviously report on this as soon as concrete information is available.

IS HIRING!

We are the only weekly newspaper in this area and we are looking for two motivated and engaging people to work in the key areas of sales and distribution. Requirements: • Thai Nationals • Good understanding of spoken and written English • Well presented • Previous experience in a sales environment useful but not a necessity • Ability to work to deadlines • Own transport (not essential but preferred) The positions will involve selling advertising space in the newspaper and online as the major task, as well as maintaining relations with existing customers and dealing with renewals of ads, and coordinating and monitoring the efficient distribution of the paper every week. Conditions: The positions are full time jobs but the hours and days worked are very flexible; this is not a normal 9 to 5 Monday to Friday office job as many existing and potential customers work irregular hours. The initial salary offered to the successful candidates will vary depending on previous experience and abilities, but will be in the range of 10000 to 15000 baht a month, plus any extra commission earned through performance. There will be sales targets which if achieved will generate this extra income. We anticipate this could result in an income averaging at least 20000 baht a month, with exceptional candidates capable of earning much more. Application: Please send an email to info@awolonline.net with the subject line “Employment Application” and include your reasons for wanting to work for AWOL, your previous work history, your personal details including phone number and address, and any other information you believe is relevant to your application.

rabbit A pub landlord is clearing empty glasses from his beer garden one afternoon when a voice says, “Got any food?” He turns round and is shocked to see a rabbit talking to him. “You want some rabbit food?” he asks. “No, proper food, like steak and chips,” says the rabbit. “My cook’s gone home for the afternoon,” says the landlord. “I could do you a sandwich.” “Haven’t you got anything hot?” “How about a toastie?” says the landlord. “I’ve got cheese, jam and ham.” “OK, I’ll have a ham toastie and a pint of bitter - take it out of that,” says the rabbit, taking a £20 note out of his fur. The bewildered landlord takes the money and returns with the order. Half an hour later, he finds the rabbit somewhat the worse for wear. “Ah, lanlorth,” he says, “I’ll have a sheese toashtie and another bint of pitter.” “Don’t you think you’ve had enough to drink?” says the landlord. “No, donth worry about me. I can take my thrink.” So the landlord brings him what he’s asked for. Half an hour later, the rabbit is paralytic. “Lanlorsh,” he says. “I’ll have a zham toashtie and another pinth of butter.” “Now look,” says the landlord, “you’re only a little rabbit. All this alcohol could kill you.” The rabbit pleads that it isn’t often he has the money for a good session, so the landlord gives in and serves him. Half an hour later, he returns to find the rabbit dead. At closing time that night, he’s retrieving the last of the glasses from the beer garden when the ghost of the rabbit appears. “I know, I know, you’ve come back to haunt me,” says the landlord. “I shouldn’t have let you have all that drink.” “No, I’ve come back to reassure you,” says the rabbit. “It wasn’t the booze that killed me.” “Oh no? So what was it, then?” “Mixing my toasties.”

days of empire Last week we speculated that Boris Johnson - Britains’ bumbling Foreign Secretary - must have dined on Thailands finest cuisine during his recent whistle stop visit to Bangkok. Now we know that he can’t have had much time for dining at all. Judging by a speech he gave in Westminster following his return home, it seems that he must have spent his spare time carrying out research in Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy into what attracts his fellow Brits to the Land of Smiles. Then a quick dash to Wireless Road, where a chat with Embassy staff over a burger confirmed everything he had read in the Sun. In his resulting speech Boris was able to pass on what he had discovered in Bangkok. That over 1 million UK tourists go to Thailand every year, where our superb consular services deal with some of the things they get up to there. Despite a bit of toning down before the speech was delivered it still didn’t go down too well, and Boris landed himself in it yet again. But let’s be generous. Maybe he was simply referring to the antics of that Robinson Crusoe wannabe Mikel Smith, who paddled a canoe to a remote island off Chumphon. You can’t really blame Mr Smith for seeking a quiet life on a deserted island, and the happy camper was well prepared with spare clothes and waterproof bags. Was he one of Thailands’ 8,000 plus illegal over stayers? Or was he simply trying to escape what is rapidly coming to resemble a house of cards. Either way there must be many like Mr Smith who would love to escape Britain right now. Not only is it still a largely pre metric nation, (the only firm pre Brexit arrangement we have in place,) but its’ charities, politicians, big businesses, footballers et al are getting into trouble as a result of ongoing revelations about cases of sexual harrassment and abuse. Not a week goes by without new allegations being made, and while some show a truly shocking abuse of power, others result in people admitting what they claim to have been inappropriate behaviour years ago, and simply resigning from their jobs. But last week Oxfam topped the lot. It’s not so much the allegations themselves, or even whether they are credible. The damage has been done to a huge charity which has spent years gathering donations from ordinary trusting people, many of whom could barely afford it, but who have been moved to donate by those pictures of malnourished and dying children around the world. The number of Oxfam aid workers who are ultimately found guilty may be a tiny proportion, but British people had already been moving

towards a ‘charity begins at home’ culture, and Oxfam have shown them to be right. Which brings us to North Lanarkshire, in Scotland, where the Council is proposing to provide school meals all year round. It has been found that many children from low income families in the area suffer from ‘holiday hunger’, with demand on food banks doubling during school holidays. If approved the North Lanarkshire ‘Food 365’ scheme will feed school children in need every day of the year. Poverty in the UK is no laughing matter, unlike the culinary skills of parents, but it’s a world away from the time when we would do anything to avoid school dinners.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... Rise and shine Get out of bed and prepare for work. The earliest use of ‘rise and shine’ in print allude to a biblical reference, in Isaiah 60:1. King James Version, 1611, gives that as: Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. The earliest examples of the actual phrase ‘rise and shine’ don’t come from the bible itself but are clearly directly influenced by it; for example, The Testimony of William Erbery, 1658, a book of religious observations directed “To the Christian Reader”: They [the Christian saints] shall so rise and shine, that the glory shall rise upon them.

Courage, child of Washington, Though thy fate disastrous stems, We have seen the setting sun Rise and shine with brighter beams. The use of ‘rise and shine’ as a wake up call for soldiers is what has given us the expression in everyday use. In that context ‘rise’ just means ‘rouse yourself ’ and ‘shine’ derives from the shining of boots that soldiers were expected to do each morning. It is difficult to know if it was coined independently of the biblical source or whether it was also a jokey reference which compared the bleary-eyed rough soldiery to the radiant Christian venerables - most likely the latter, I would have thought. When used in the British Army ‘rise and shine’ was, and still is, preceded by ‘wakey-wakey’. The naval wake up call is ‘shake (or show) a leg’. The term may not have originated in the British Army though - the first citation of its use that I can find is from America. That’s in the 1916 U.S. Marine Corps Recruiters’ Bulletin:

The link to Isaiah 60:1 is even clearer in the use of the phrase ‘arise, and shine’, which is found in several Christian texts of the mid 17th century - for instance Robert Gell’s An Essay “He rapped at the door and in stentorian tones cried,’‘Rise and toward the Amendment of the last English-Translation of the shine... Wiggle a toe.’” Bible, 1659 and Thomas Douglas’s Jerubbaal: or, A Vindication of the Sober Testimony against Sinful Complyance, 1664. The first non-religious uses, albeit those probably still referring Is there an English phrase or saying that back to the biblical text, are references to the sun, as in this you would like to know more about? example from Maryland paper The Torch Light And Public Advertiser, February 1824: Email it to us on submissions@awolonline.net

germany Police in western Germany have freed two men who became entangled with a mannequin and a large, remote controlled car. Officers were called after cries were heard from an apartment in the city of Mainz in the early hours of Saturday. Police found the 58-year-old tenant and a 61-year-old visitor “hopelessly locked together” with the toy car and the mannequin — which was dressed in a knight’s costume. Officers were able to free the men, who were too drunk to explain how their unfortunate predicament had come about. According to a police statement, “the whole thing would have remained a funny episode” but the younger man was “more than impolite” and now faces a charge of insulting officers.

scotland Police in Scotland were called by a farmer who thought a big cat had invaded his cow shed. They ended up in a 45-minute standoff with a large stuffed tiger. Police thought they had the tiger by the tail when they were deployed to a farm in Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, sending in a number of units, including an armed response team. The authorities eventually realized it was a toy. Peterhead Inspector George Cordiner says “until you know exactly what you are dealing with, every option has to be considered.” Police describe the incident as a “false call made with genuine good intent,” though they did allow that officers had a “roaring shift on Saturday night.” The Scottish edition of the Sun newspaper reported that the farmer, Bruce Grubb, went out to check on his cows while he was having a housewarming party and saw the ‘tiger” on a ramp. The paper quoted Grubb as saying: “I was stone cold sober, drink had nothing to do with me thinking it was real.”

uk Suspected drug dealer has now gone 34 days without taking a poo A suspected drug dealer on a record-breaking toilet strike has now gone 34 days without taking a poo. Lamarr Chambers, 24, is nearing his sixth week in custody after Essex Police arrested and detained him on January 17. His toilet strike made history on day 24 when Chambers broke the British record for spending the most days in police custody. Officers believe he swallowed some of the drugs before his arrest in Harlow, Essex, and they have been patiently waiting

for him to finally go ever since. But with this waiting game now in its second month, Essex Police had no choice but to request more time to detain him in court. Chambers appeared before magistrates yesterday, where police applied to keep him in custody for another five days. Ms Wilson said: ‘Mr Chambers has not properly been to the toilet for some 33 days.’ Essex Police started a hashtag – #PooWatch – to keep us all updated about any sudden movements. But after 24 days, the force stopped providing updates on the situation. Instead, a spokesperson said they will make one final announcement ‘when he does what he needs to do’.

uk Police tell chicken-lovers to stop calling them to report the KFC crisis London chicken-lovers have been calling the police asking them to sort out the KFC closure crisis. So many people contacted The Met about the chicken shortage officers had to use Twitter to tell them their favourite restaurant closing is not an emergency. Frustrated police officers in Tower Hamlets tweeted today: ‘Please do not contact us about the #KFCCrisis – it is not a police matter if your favourite eatery is not serving the menu that you desire.’ Over 2,700 people have shared the tweet to help spread the message so the boys in blue can concentrate fighting crime instead of dealing with poultry problems. The fear and loathing caused by KFC running out of chicken has caught everyone by surprise with even MPs getting calls asking them to help get everyone finger-licking again. Constituents of Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Neil Coyle contacted him about the ‘great chicken drought.’ He tweeted yesterday: ‘I’ve been contacted by disappointed #KFC customers on Borough High St #SE1 & Walworth Rd #SE17 today.’ Around 700 of the company’s 870 stores in the UK have shut after a huge failure at delivery firm DHL left restaurants without any chicken. It has been claimed the delivery chaos is costing the firm £1 million a day while it is feared staff on zero hour contacts will miss out on pay. KFC fans phoning the police about their culinary woes has highlighted the common problem of all different types of callers wasting police time. The Met said in a statement: ‘Call centres currently receive more than 14,500 calls every weekday. ‘The Met is continuing its drive – including the use of its social media channels – to reduce improper use of the 999 and 101 numbers.’

match report: Samut Songkhram 1 – 1 Hua Hin City Today was the return to League football for Samut Songkhram having suffered a bye last week. Last season they were

playing in T2, but due to Club Licensing issues have been forced to take a double relegation, and are now playing in T4(West). On paper, our hosts were runaway favourites today, but we knew Coach Sebastien would have other thoughts. There were a few changes to last week’s team due to what I can only assume to be squad rotation – keeping the players match fit has to be a big headache. Natchapon returned in goal after injury, big Dennis was in for Songkran. David and Arnon were strengthening the attack. This looked like a team wanting to take the game to today’s opponents. Hua Hin had the best of the chances in the first half, with Maraba, David and Haritsadee proving to be a constant threat down the left. When the breakthrough came, Maraba placed a pin point accurate pass to David’s boot near the edge of the penalty area, and David didn’t have to be asked twice to blast the ball past the stranded Samut Songkhram shot stopper. Maraba was very unlucky not to put the ball into the net twice himself in this half, but the keeper saved well both times. Big Dennis was very unlucky not to grab an opening goal early on as well. The Samut Songkhram equaliser came from a free kick on the left, beautifully floated onto an unmarked player, who glanced a header into the top right corner. Hua Hin were unlucky to go into the break with honours even. The 2nd half was a little different, and Samut Songkhram put a little more pressure on to the visitors, although having said that, Natchapon still had little to do. However, there was a scary moment when Natchapon was well beaten, and the ball rattled the underside of the crossbar, before bouncing out again. I am not a big fan of Thai referees, but this was a vital decision, which I believe he got right. At the other end, Hua Hin had several opportunities to score, which on another day would have won the game for us. Alas, it was not to be. The opposing keeping was earning his money today. We were very unlucky not to grab a freak winner, almost right on the final whistle. Maraba took a free kick on the left. He floated the ball into the penalty area, but too close to the keeper. The keeper grabbed the ball, but lost it again. The ball was travelling towards goal, when the keeper managed to save his blushes. This is the second consecutive draw for Hua Hin, and the second time they were the better team. It’s only a matter of time before they win 3 points. Once they start winning, I think they will continue. hash house harriers

friday 2nd march 2018 PREMIER LEAGUE Arsenal v Manchester City 02:45 Featured Game

sunday 25th february 2018 EFL CUP FINAL Arsenal v Manchester City 23:30 Following their shock exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Wigan, Guardiola’s men quickly have a chance to redeem themselves by claiming some silverware; however this game will not be easy, with this likely being the Gunners only chance of a trophy, and they are normally a good cup side. We can see this going the distance and beyond, and possibly being settled on penalties, but we are going for the shock winners being Arsenal, but for the league match that follows a few days later going to the virtually certain champions City.

pep talk Mighty Wigan Athletic praise plucky Manchester City for ‘having a go’

••

england Wigan Athletic have congratulated Manchester City for a heroic effort that ended in inevitable defeat in a classic FA Cup tie. The mighty League One side toppled the quaint little Premier League leaders in a surprisingly close game. “It’s the stuff Roy of the Rovers comics are made of,” confirmed football analyst, Simon Williams. “All credit to Manchester City, nobody expected them to hang on in the way that they did. “You can’t expect a team of some of the most expensive players in the world to stand a chance against eleven men who probably work part-time at Greggs to top up their earnings. “Will Grigg was truly ‘on fire’ last night as well, hence his routinely brilliant goal that we all knew was coming. “It’s a shame Manchester City grew so

Left: The quality in the Wigan side eventually wore Manchester City down as Will Grigg scored the winner

frustrated with the superior opposition that they ended up conceding a red card, but in many ways, it’s also entirely understandable. “Hopefully they managed to get a hot, nourishing meal before returning to Manchester.” Will Grigg, Wigan’s goalscorer, who has scored in every round of the cup this season, also congratulated the Citizens

for their performance, saying “We knew we were in for a tough match, but we were always confident on our own patch that we could get the result, but full credit to City for trying their best. Our manager was quite impressed with some of their players, so don’t be surprised if he makes a move for one or two of them in the summer.”
