•You• are reading the last ever AWOL. This is not an early April Fool’s joke. The company this week hua hin

learned that the work permit for it’s Managing Editor will not be renewed, so with that simple decision the newspaper comes to an end as his current permit expires on 3rd April. However we will not leave you without a more detailed description of the farce that has unfolded in this matter - the company is owned by the editor’s Thai wife, and having successfully obtained a work permit in 2010, has had one continuously to date. However in 2016, the Social Insurance department contacted AWOL to inform us that his social insurance payments could no longer be made through the company, because of who owned the company, and instead had to be paid directly by himself. At the time no more was thought of this, until this week when a visit to the Labour Department in Prachuap Kiri Khan revealed that without these social insurance payments being made through the company, the work permit could not be renewed. The Social Insurance office were spoken to, and confirmed that the payments could not be made through the company - Stalemate, and Game, Set and Match to bureaucracy. We are extremely sad to have to bring this news to you, as we have spent nearly ten years producing the only weekly publication in the area. We now have to wind up the company, and try our best to both collect monies owed to us, and refund monies given to us for adverts placed, and we will be in contact with all our advertisers. The last few years have been difficult for us - financially, as advertisers became harder to find, staff wise as we tried and failed to attract staff that could work for us, personally, as our editors’ parents have both passed away in the last 19 months, and finally bureaucratically, as ever changing demands from the authorities have finally buried us. We hope you have enjoyed AWOL, and thank you for reading. Goodbye to you all.

lemon At a local bar in downtown Wakefield.... The owner & bartender, was so sure that he was the strongest man around, that he offered a standing £1000 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and then hand the lemon to the patron. Anyone who could squeeze two more drops of juice out of it, would win the money. Many people had tried, over the years: weightlifters, longshoremen, etc., but nobody had ever been able to do it. One day, this scrawny little fellow came into the bar, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit. He sat down, ordered a glass of draft, and started looking around the bar. After reading the sign on the wall about the lemon challenge, he said in a small voice: “I was just reading your sign, and I’d like to try the bet.” After the laughter had died down, the bartender said: “Ok,...” He grabbed a lemon and squeezed the heck out of it...... Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little fellow. But the Crowd’s laughter turned to total silence....as the man clenched his little fist around the lemon....and six drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the guy his £1000, and then asked little man: “Do you mind if I ask what do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, a weight-lifter, or what?” The little fellow quietly replied: “I work for The Inland Revenue.”

Wife or Mistress An architect, an artist and an accountant were discussing whether it was better to spend time with a wife or a mistress. The architect said he enjoyed time with a wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring relationship. The artist said he enjoyed time with a mistress, because of the passion and mystery. The accountant said he liked both. “Both?” chorused the others. “Yes,” said the accountant. “If you have a wife and a mistress, they will each assume you are spending time with the other woman, which means you can go to the office and get some work done.”

tuppence for your thoughts? With Easter upon us it’s that time of year when Brits flock to the coast like lemmings. It is a long established tradition, like preparing gardens for the summer or putting the house on the market, which has no regard for the weather forecast. Sometimes day trippers are lucky and blessed with spring sunshine, but often they end up taking shelter in amusement arcades, where those ever popular ‘push penny’ machines attract all ages. Also known as coin cascades or penny falls, it is easy to pass an hour or two feeding them with coins before walking away with just a key ring as a prize. But it isn’t the prize that matters with those machines, it’s a bit of fun with a smattering of luck. Even an addict would have difficulty losing more than a fiver an hour on one, and they haven’t even taken proper penny coins since decimalisation, but two pence pieces. Yet they are still gambling machines which, like Thailands’ dart boards, require gaming licenses, and now Britains’ gambling industry could be facing one of it’s biggest crises ever with the demise of the two pence piece. Along with the one pence, two pence coins are rapidly falling out of favour with the British public. A recent survey by ‘Compare the Market’ (the company which made meerkats famous) found that almost a third of people no longer use them at all. They aren’t worth carrying around, particularly the two pence which is too bulky for it’s own good, and ends up stored in jars at home or even thrown away. To the government these low value coins have become too expensive to produce, which has re-opened the debate on whether they should be discontinued, and surely few people would miss them? Except for when we fancy a flutter on those push penny machines, which did manage to survive the change to decimal currency, but short of producing supplies of blank metal discs what could be done next to save them? True, there are some which take twenty pence coins, but that would be an increase too far and take the fun out of what has been a quite innocent pastime, which even young children can legally play. Some might say that fact in itself is enough to ban the ‘push penny’s’. That they will lead children into a lifetime of hard gambling and the crime that often goes along with it. Which brings us to the genuinely serious problem to be found on any High Street in Britain. The high stake fixed odds betting machines in every betting shop, which people can feed with up to 200 pounds sterling every 20 seconds.

Industry regulator the Gambling Commission has found that in Britain more than 2 million people are addicted to high stake machines, with over 430,000 of them having a serious habit. So serious that lives are destroyed, sometimes quite literally. In 2016 one of the UKs’ major betting shop chains, Ladbrokes Coral, took around 800 million pounds from their machines alone, and in January this year the government reported on plans to reduce minimum stakes from 100 to between 2 and 50 pounds. Those plans have been delayed to the end of this year, while the betting industry continues to grow. So despite Thailands’ draconian laws against gambling, which now include games of darts, is the country proving to be right after all?

On This Day

Finally, two cents in the States is about as useful now as the British two pence piece, but in 1867 it would buy an acre of land. On March 30th that year the US bought Alaska from Russia for just two cents an acre, which might help to explain a few things. Sadly there must now be another, and really final, ‘finally.’ For reasons beyond anyones’ control AWOL has to say goodbye, and along with it THAB HQ will close. My thanks to Steve for letting me share life with you for the last seven years. It has kept me off the streets and hopefully hasn’t been too mundane. So as we say in Hull, taraa for now. See ya. Mags. EDITOR’S NOTE: I would like to personally thank Mags for all the work she has put in writing this column every week, from her very first one in issue 225, almost exactly five years ago to this issue (29th March 2013) and just shy of 250 articles. Hua Hin misses you in person, and will miss your unique reflections on life here and there.

english corner

••

Our last English Corner is, perhaps appropriately, concerning a phrase that involves silence. This week it is.... Sent to Coventry To be ignored or ostracised. This behaviour often takes the form of pretending that the shunned person, although conspicuously present, can’t be seen or heard. The origins of this phrase aren’t known, although it is quite probable that events in Coventry in the English Civil War in the 1640s play a part. For those not familiar with the UK, Coventry is an industrial city in Warwickshire, England. It is well-known for its two cathedrals; the modern cathedral being built in 1962 to replace the old cathedral, which was destroyed during an intense German bombing raid in 1940. In the 17th century, when this phrase is supposed to have originated, Coventry was a small town. It has been suggested that the phrase, although we now use it in an allusory sense, originated from people being actually sent there. The story - and it is no more than that - is that Cromwell sent a group of Royalist soldiers to be imprisoned in Coventry, around 1648. The locals, who were parliamentary supporters, shunned them and refused to consort with them. The first known citation of the allusory meaning is from the Club Book of the Tarporley Hunt, 1765: “Mr. John Barry having sent the Fox Hounds to a different place to what was ordered ... was sent to Coventry, but return’d upon giving six bottles of Claret to the Hunt.” By 1811, the then understood meaning of the term was defined in Grose’s The Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue: To send one to Coventry; a punishment inflicted by officers of

the army on such of their brethren as are testy, or have been guilty of improper behaviour, not worthy the cognizance of a court martial. The person sent to Coventry is considered as absent; no one must speak to or answer any question he asks, except relative to duty, under penalty of being also sent to the same place. On a proper submission, the penitent is recalled, and welcomed by the mess, as just returned from a journey to Coventry. A well-known example of someone being sent to Coventry is Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), after his falling out with the Liddell family. Dodgson had developed a close relationship with the Liddell’s daughter Alice. In 1863, when Alice was 11, something happened to cause the family to ostracize him. Whatever it was we can’t now be sure as, although Dodgson recorded it in his diary at the time, the entry was later cut out by a Dodgson family member. This has led to widespread but unproven speculation that the relationship between Dodgson and Alice was inappropriate in some way - possibly what would now be called paedophilic. This phrase was common in industrial disputes in Britain in the mid-twentieth century. Anyone who was considered to be unsupportive of the workforce was in danger of finding that his/her workmates refused to acknowledge their existence. Co-incidentally this was centred on the highly unionized car industry and especially British Leyland, which was largely based in Coventry. That gave rise to people who had in fact lived and worked in Coventry all their life being sent there figuratively by their workmates..

brazil Teenager with ‘I am a thief ’ tattoo on his forehead is arrested for stealing A teenager who has ‘I am a thief and an idiot’ tattooed across his forehead has been arrested for – surprise, surprise – stealing. His unfortunate tattoo was not self-inflicted, but forced on him by two men who allegedly caught him stealing a bike. A year later, Ruan Rocha da Silva, 18, was caught again in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Military Police arrested him after he allegedly tried to steal five cans of deodorant from a supermarket. Silva’s torturers were caught by police after they filmed themselves tattooing his head and sent pictures to friends. Tattoo artist Maycon Wesley Carvalho, 27, and neighbour Ronildo Moreira de Aruajo, 29, were both found guilty of torture and jailed for more than three years. In the video, Carvalho is heard saying: ‘It is going to hurt, it is going to hurt.’ Silva is now awaiting trial after being released on bail for the most recent case. His cousin told local reporters that he was shoplifting because he had relapsed into drug addiction. At a trial for Silva’s torture case, it was heard that he was receiving treatment for crack cocaine and alcohol addiction.

uk Cat wanders into home days after family held a funeral for him When Willow the cat went missing during the Beast from the East snowstorms, his owners feared the worst. Jonny and Cat Robinson put up posters and searched the neighbourhood for ten days. The search was called off when they discovered the remains of a cat on a road near their Herefordshire home. Convinced from the similarity of the fur that it was Willow, they buried the animal in their garden and said their farewells. But a few days later the 18-month old tabby limped into their garden in Hope-under-Dinmore with a broken leg. The cat they buried was not him after all. ‘Jonny was absolutely distraught when he found the remains on the main road,’ Cat said. ‘He found a lump of fur which resembled a cat on the road and took it to the vet. It turned out to be definitely a cat and had similar markings to Willow, but it had been run over so many times it was difficult to make out.’ Their children, Josh, 7, and Buddy, 4, watched as their parents buried a cat beneath an olive tree in the garden. ‘We did our grieving,’ Cat said. ‘Though we kept hoping Willow was going to come back.’ Jonny continued to put out food just in case. Then his hopes were raised when he saw it had been eaten. ‘Then Jonny came in holding Willow who was a bag of bones,’ Cat explains. ‘We don’t know where Willow went and what stories he could tell.’ Now safely back at

home with his family, Willow is like the cat that got the cream. There is only one mystery – the identity of the animal buried in the Robinsons’ garden. ‘People have asked “So whose cat is in your garden?”‘ said Cat. ‘All we can say is that at least some animal has had a nice burial.’

uk Prankster convinces Bitcoin ‘scammer’ to dress up as a raccoon and go through some bins When Neil Murphy, from Belfast, was sent a message asking for a Bitcoin donation he decided to have a little fun with his new friend. Instead of telling Yousef, who said he was from Egypt, to leave him alone, he agreed to send him 0.15 Bitcoin (£851) if Yousef dressed up as a raccoon foraging through his neighbour’s bins. When Yousef asked for $100 (£70) worth of Bitcoin in a bid to secure the deal, Neil said: ‘I cannot trust you. I have been scammed before. ‘Last time I sent somebody the Bitcoin and he sent me a picture of him dressed as a badger instead of a racoon and he didn’t even scavenge in a bin.’ From there, it seems that Yousef was hooked. He replied: ‘I’ll wear the raccoon and send you a picture. I also love raccoons very much and we have a farm that has a lot of them.’ He also advised Neil that it would take him at least two days to source the outfit and take the pictures. But Neil said: ‘Ok maybe you don’t even need to buy a costume you could just put some white stripes on your face and you will look like an au natural raccoon. Plus some striped black and white clothing. But the bin scavenging picture is absolutely essential. I cannot begin to stress to you how important it is.’ But Yousef then begins to question why he is doing this. But Neil puts his foot down, and says that if the photos are not sent, then they the deal is off and Yousef will not be getting his Bitcoin. This makes him comply and Neil receives the photos that he has been waiting for. Yousef even sends Neil a selfie showing his racoon makeup in all of its glory and asks if there is anything that Neil would like to change. How considerate. But the prankster decides to take it even further and tells him that he needs a more authentic looking top, and for the photos to be taken at night. He also requested that Yousef snarl at the camera, to really make his experience as a raccoon authentic. Finally, the photos were sent. Yousef even went to the effort of tipping a bin on its side in the dead of night to send the hilarious photographs. After receiving the photos, Neil decided to end their correspondence and told Yousef that he would not be receiving any money from him. Yousef, unsurprisingly, blocked him.

Featured Game

saturday 31st march 2018 PREMIER LEAGUE West Ham United v Southampton 21:00 An absolutely vital game for both these teams, sitting in 17th and 18th plave respectively; a win for either will jump them several places up the table in a very congested relegation battle that covers half the teams in the league. West Ham’s last match featured angry supporters protesting and invading the pitch, and a team that were clearly distracted by the hostility. Southampton are a better team than their position suggests, but are also facing trouble on and off the pitch. This is likely to be a nervy and edgy game where the first goal will prove vital. As our last featured game, this writer is going with his heart rather than his head and predicting the Hammers to win this on their way to survival, and hopefully huge changes at season end.

balls to the wall Cricket reclassified as ‘cheaty sport’

••

australia CRICKET has been officially reclassified as one of the world’s ‘cheaty’ sports, along with cycling and sprinting. Following the confession of balltampering by Australia captain Steve Smith, the sport is now registered as one where results are likely to be dishonest but which you can still enjoy if you like. A spokesman for the International Cricket Council said: “It’s fine, it’s still the same old cricket. It’s just a bit cheaty. Especially if the Aussies and the Pakistanis are involved.” “There are some sports that are basically honest, like football and tennis, some that you have to keep an eye on, like Formula One and rugby, and some that are simply dishonest by nature like cycling, athletics and now cricket.” “It’s quite liberating, in a way. Now we don’t have to pretend to be an actual sport with regulations we can make it much more exciting, with unlikely twists
