dartboards confiscated in pattaya in licencing confusion

•The• bizarre news this week coming out of Pattaya that some bars there had their dartboards confiscated thailand

by the authorities has left most people scratching their heads in bemusement. The raids were apparently carried out last week by the Provincial authority with support from the police, with the bar owners being told that it was being done because the establishments did not have a licence to allow the playing of darts, despite the additional facts that darts is not listed in any legislation, that the bars had never been informed of any licence requirement, and that they were also told, when asking how they could get this licence, that there isn’t one! While this does appear to be a problem local to Pattaya, it is reminiscent of ‘raids’ carried out in Hua Hin some years ago regarding music licences, and also brings to mind the equally bizarre arrest of around sixty elderly expats playing bridge in Pattaya in 2016, where an apparently archaic law regarding how many playing cards are allowed to be in one place had been transgressed (or, depending on the report, cards were being used that did not have the proper stamp on them). Various sources are quoting the 1935 Gambling Act for this latest series of raids, despite the fact that darts is not specifically named , although possibly covered by the description “Tossing of coins or any object in any kind of container”. The Thailand Darts Association has referred to this Act, and announced the suspension of all Pattaya darts leagues until the situation is resolved, but it must be stressed that at press time, only Pattaya is affected. It has to be hoped that firstly a resolution is found, and secondly that this kind of unwarranted harrassment does not occur anywhere else, as it is not only ridiculous but also causing further damage to Thailand’s image in the world, with the subsequent inevitable knock-on effect to tourism.

Requirements: • Thai Nationals • Good understanding of spoken and written English • Well presented • Previous experience in a sales environment useful but not a necessity • Ability to work to deadlines • Own transport (not essential but preferred) The positions will involve selling advertising space in the newspaper and online as the major task, as well as maintaining relations with existing customers and dealing with renewals of ads, and coordinating and monitoring the efficient distribution of the paper every week. area 555 Got some great jokes? Send them to us on submissions@awolonline.net weighed John took his blind date to the carnival. “What would you like to do first, Kim?” asked the man. “I want to get weighed,” said the girl. They ambled over to the weight guesser. He guessed 120 pounds. She got on the scale; it read 117 and she won a prize. Next the couple went on the ferris wheel. When the ride was over, John again asked Kim what she would like to do. “I want to get weighed,” she said. Back to the weight guesser they went. Since they had been there before, he guessed her correct weight, and John lost his dollar. The couple walked around the carnival and again he asked where to next. “I want to get weighed,” she responded. By this time, John figured she was really weird and took her home early, dropping her off with a handshake. Her roommate, Laura, asked her about the blind date, “How’d it go?” Kim responded, “Oh, Waura, it was wousy.”

big people words A group of kindergartners were trying to become accustomed to the first grade. The biggest hurdle they faced was that the teacher insisted on no baby talk. “You need to use ‘big people’ words,” she’d always remind them. She asked Chris what he had done over the weekend. “I went to visit my Nana.” “No, you went to visit your GRANDMOTHER. Use big people words!” She then asked Mitchell what he had done. “I took a ride on a choo-choo.” She said, “No, you took a ride on a TRAIN. Use big people words.” She then asked Bobby what he had done. “I read a book,” he replied. “That’s WONDERFUL!” the teacher said. “What book did you read?” Bobby thought about it, then puffed out his little chest with great pride and said, “Winnie the Shit.”

The local guy in the line behind him immediately gives him the jab: “They don’t serve BEER here, you MORON!” The German fellow felt pretty stupid, but suddenly turns to the New Yorker with a surprised look, and begins to chuckle. “And what’s so funny?!?” the New Yorker demands. “Oh, nothing really, I just realized that you came here for the food.”

the ambassador cannot see you now Whatever your thoughts on the British Embassy in Bangkok it will be sad to see it go. Behind the crowded front of house waiting areas and often endless queues it is a very familiar piece of home, much like any other British government building. From the standard photos of the Queen to the Civil Service issue wall clocks and self service canteen, it’s like stepping back a few thousand miles into something approaching what used to be normality. Just for a short while you can escape the bustle of Bangkok, before realising how good it feels to be back out on Wireless Road again. The Embassy isn’t just an office either. As well as occupying its current traditional colonial style building since 1922 it has provided a social hub for expats over the years, holding regular garden parties. Most notably the first Ploenchit Fair was held there in 1957. Established to raise money for charity projects all over Thailand it continued in the Embassy grounds until 2000. The fair, now in its’ 61st year and located in another part of Bangkok, is held just before Christmas, and is based on the traditional British fair. Until 2006 the whole Embassy compound occupied more than 12 acres. But that year some of the site was sold to Central Group which developed the Central Embassy Shopping Mall on it. The remaining 9.1 acres - 23 rai - has made history for both Thailand and the British Foreign Office by being sold for 420 million pounds, (18 billion baht). A record property sale for the Foreign Office, and making it the most expensive piece of land ever bought in Thailand. It’s no surprise that one of the buyers involved is again Central Group, but the other - HongKong Land - has an interesting connection with Britain via it’s parent company Jardine Matheson Group, a big but low profile player in Asia. Jardines began life in Scotland in 1832, when traders William Jardine and James Matheson joined forces to form what would become the huge conglomerate that helped to found HongKong. With headquarters in Bermuda Jardines continues to be controlled by descendants of the founders, and has interests in the Mandarin Oriental hotel chain, supermarkets, construction and car dealerships amongst others. But while the income from the sale will benefit the Foreign Office in the short term, the longer term effect on Bangkok doesn’t look too rosy. Yes the British Embassy will no doubt carry on doing what it does in a rather more modern setting, but another large swathe of Bangkoks’ dwindling green space is

likely to be be lost forever beneath concrete. Back in Hua Hin the reputation of the resort has taken a bit of a battering. Along with a handful of other major Thai tourist destinations it has been named as a hot spot for foreign visa overstayers. It is thought that some 8,000 people countrywide are on overstay, although a figure of 10,000 has also been quoted, and most of them are said to be up to no good while hiding out. Well if they weren’t hiding already they certainly will be now, as the hunt is on to flush them out and confiscate their wealth. (Also known as ‘doing a Yingluck’.) What is puzzling is what makes the authorities so certain that overstayers are also the ones who are wealthy criminals. Surely wealthy foreign criminals are more likely to stay on the right side of their visas rather than risk being discovered during a routine passport check? Simplistic maybe, and there are bound to be some who turn to crime when they can no longer afford to stay visa legal. But consider where you would be hiding if you found yourselves on a lengthy overstay with no means of paying the fine. Hua Hin - or Udon Up There?

On This Day Finally, on February 9th 1895, a strangely named game called Mintonette was introduced to the world by American William G. Morgan; the name was derived from the game of Badminton, but was soon changed to ...Volleyball, one of the most popular sports in Thailand now.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... Once in a blue moon Very rarely. Ask the man on the Clapham omnibus the question ‘What is a blue moon exactly?’ and you are likely to get one of three answers: 1. Duh. 2. It’s the second full moon in a calendar month. 3. It’s when the moon looks blue. Let’s start with 3. Very occasionally, the moon actually does appear to be blue. This sometimes occurs after a volcanic eruption, like that of Krakatao in 1883. Dust particles in the atmosphere are normally of a size to diffract blue light, making the moon appear reddish at sunset. Larger volcanic dust particles diffract red light, making the moon appear bluish. Tempting as it is to suppose that something that happens very rarely, and which is mentioned by name in a phrase that means ‘very rarely’, is the source of the phrase, it probably isn’t. Actual examples of the moon appearing blue would in fact be the exception that proves the rule, as the ‘blue moon’ was originally something that was considered not rare but impossible. The two notions, ‘a blue moon’ and ‘the moon is made of green cheese’, were synonyms for absurdity, like ‘pigs might fly’. The ‘blue moon’ expression with the ‘impossibility’ meaning is old and dates back to medieval England; for example, a work by William Barlow, the Bishop of Chichester, the Treatyse of the Buryall of the Masse, 1528, included a sarcastic reference to a blue moon: Yf they saye the mone is belewe, We must beleve that it is true.

something that didn’t happen very often. The earliest example of it that I can find is in Pierce Egan’s Real Life in London, 1821: How’s Harry and Ben? - haven’t seen you this blue moon. Moving on to answer No. 2. To explain that one we have to follow a long trail of etymological research, leading back to an American amateur astronomer called James Pruett. Since 1819, The Maine Farmers’ Almanac has listed the dates of forthcoming blue moons. The compilers of the almanac had their own definition of what blue moons are. This derives from the fact that lunar and calendar months aren’t quite the same and that some years have 13 full moons. In a typical 12moon year, the moons all have names, like the familiar ‘Harvest Moon’, ‘Hunter’s Moon’ etc. In a 13-moon year the extra moon is, somewhat arbitrarily, deemed to be the third moon in the season that has four rather than the usual three, and is called the ‘Blue Moon’. The aforementioned James Pruett read an edition of the Maine Farmers’ Almanac, but misinterpreted the system and printed the ‘second full moon in a month’ version in a 1946 edition of the Sky & Telescope Magazine. For some reason, probably because it ended up being printed as an answer in an early version of Trivial Pursuit, Pruett’s version has gained currency. Two full moons in a month isn’t really all that rare an occurrence - it happens approximately every three years. Despite it being both inaccurate and coined by mistake, Pruett’s No. 2 answer is now widely accepted as a definition of ‘blue moon’.

In the following year, John Frith’s essay A pistle to the christen reader, 1529, included: “They wold make men beleue... that ye mone is made of grene chese.” Only after several centuries, and after the original usage had long since died out, did ‘once in a blue moon’ come to mean

china Sex robots ‘will soon be able to do the household chores as well’ If you go on 4Chan and other dark corners of the internet, there’s a worryingly large number of men who seem to believe that sex robots will soon actually replace women. And guess what? There’s companies trying to create sex droids which will do exactly that. Chinese sex doll firm ExDoll is designing robots which can ‘help with chores’. Wuy Xingliang, marketing director at Exdoll, said: “China has a shortage of women, and this is a factor in why there’s this demand, but they’re not just for sex. We’re designing them so they can have meaningful conversations with you and help with chores around the house. They could eventually even work as medical assistants or receptionists.’ At present, their abilities are likely to be limited to (fairly easy) tasks such as turning on dishwashers. China is facing a large gender gap – there’s 33.6 million more men than women, and thus rather a lot of lonely men.

uk Sheffield Man ‘Cuts Off Toe With Bolt Cutters And Eats It’ A man has been taken to hospital after reportedly cutting off his big toe with bolt cutters and eating it. Police attended the Wilko store, previously known as Wilkinson’s, in Sheffield city centre on Sunday morning. They were called following reports of concern for a man inside the premises, the Press Association reported. A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Upon officer arrival, the man was taken to hospital with injuries to his foot, where he remains. There are not believed to be any other parties involved and the incident is not being investigated as a crime.” An eyewitness told the Sheffield Star: “A man went into Wilkinson’s Haymarket, went upstairs to the electrical aisle, picked up some bolt cutters, chopped his big toe off and stood eating it. The aisle was taped off until police and forensics went.”

usa Hunter knocked out by dead goose falling from the sky A hunter was knocked out after a goose which had been shot and killed during a shoot fell from the sky onto his head. Robert Meilhammer was hunting in Maryland when he was severely injured after the bird plummeted towards the ground and hit him. The 51-year-old sustained injuries to his head and face and

was taken to hospital in Baltimore. Candy Thomson, from Maryland Natural Resources Police, said: ‘These birds weigh anywhere from 10 to probably 14 pounds. They can have a wingspan of up to six feet. So, if they’re 35 yards up in the air, and they’re falling 60 feet and they hit you on the head, it’s going to definitely cause severe damage.’ She added: ‘It doesn’t happen often, but you’re a hunter, you’re concentrating on what you’re shooting at, and you don’t see something until it’s too late.’ The incident happened near the Miles River where a group of people had leased private land to hunt a flock of geese. Mr Meilhammer is in a stable condition and is not believed to be in danger of losing his life.

uk ‘Help, I’m stuck in Stinky Bay’: Ordnance Survey collates database of local place nicknames Anyone stranded in Stinky Bay, Crazy Mary’s Hole or Nuncle Dicks could be forgiven for thinking twice before giving their location to a 999 operator. But anyone seeking help on the south coast of England will no longer have to worry about the emergency services not having a clue where they are, thanks to a database created by the Ordnance Survey. So far 6,000 local nicknames have been collated by coastguards and 999 operators in a bid to help save lives in situations where grid references, post codes and road names are not known. Built up over five years, the map of Britain includes a “vernacular geography” - place names used by locals, but up until now not included on official maps of the area. Created in partnership with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) the database - called FINTAN - has so far been restricted to the south coast of England. But now the Ordnance Survey team want to apply the same rigour to inland areas. Ordnance Survey chief scientist Jeremy Morley said: “This is just the start…the hard bit has been creating software algorithms and a web application which is up to the task. Now our ambition is to make the service, as part of our public duty, accessible across every part of Great Britain to support all our emergency services.” Chris Thomas, deputy director of maritime operations for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, said: “There is no doubt that having this information at our fingertips cuts down our response times and saves lives”.

tuesday 13th february 2018 PREMIER LEAGUE Chelsea v West Bromwich Albion 03:00 The home team are once again showing signs of falling apart but they couldn’t have picked a better game to try and shake them out of the doldrums than the visit of the bottom club, despite them showing some signs of improvenent under new manager Alan Pardew. We think this will be a cagey game, with West Brom defending deep and playing on the counter attack, and we think they will be happy to leave Stamford Bridge with a point. The longer they can prevent Chelsea scoring, the more restless the fans will become, and this will transfer to the team. If the away side can grab the first goal we suspect that they will be able to hang on and get the win, but this has draw written all over it.

golden ticket Liverpool’s Salah celebrates wonder goal by checking out property prices in Barcelona

••

england Liverpool’s latest scoring sensation Mohamed Salah is looking forward to following in the club’s time honoured tradition of moving on to better things by signing for Barcelona. Football pundits are already tipping Salah to join a long line of Liverpool greats such as Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho in excelling with spectacular displays on Merseyside for about 18 months before taking the golden ticket to Spain. The hugely gifted Egyptian mesmerised more than 50,000 fans at Anfield on Sunday with a man of the match display. The magnificent performance was topped off by netting his 21st goal in 25 games thanks to a wonder strike that left the usually stony-faced Tottenham defence open-mouthed in awe and admiration as the ball kissed the back of their net. After the match, Salah could barely

contain his excitement as he logged on to MassiveEuroMansions.com and ogled the Catalan property porn which will almost certainly be awaiting him through a big money move in the 2019/20 season. He told reporters, “Ever since I was eightyears-old it had been my dream to play for Liverpool, in the hope that would attract talent scouts from Barcelona.” Wirral resident Simon Williams, who has

been a Liverpool fan since 1992, spoke of his delight. “Our club has a long and richly deserved reputation for selling off its best players, so I’m incredibly pleased that Mohamed looks destined to keep that tradition alive,” Mr Williams enthused. “Good on you son, you’ll never walk alone.”
