•At•this time of year, it is very easy to get totslly wrapped up in preparing for what can be a wonderful hua hin
family occasion, especially for those of us lucky enough to have children, or a celebration with friends as we see out another year. Without wanting to sound like the perennial Band Aid song though, there is a world outside your window that does not always get the happiness, love and gifts that most of us do, and this week we are asking you all to think of such unfortunates, and if you are able, to take part in an event that has been organised to help just a few of those in that situation. On Saturday 23rd December, a charity event is being held at the Mucky Duck bar near Baan Khun Por Food Market in soi 88, with all proceeds going to the Mercy House Children’s Orphanage in Pranburi. Prizes have been donated by people and businesses across the area, and there is both a raffle and a charity auction to raise money. Alongside this, the orphanage children are going to perform Christmas Carols from 6pm to 7pm, so even if you are not bidding in the auction, come along and get into the Christmas spirit if you can. There will also be a pool challenge against some of the best pool players in the area, where you can try to beat them in a one frame shootout for a 100 baht donation which will run throughout the evening. The prizes that can be won in the raffle, or bid for in the auction include golf and accommodation at Black Mountain,and Banyan, free meals, home appliances, bottles of wine and spirits and a whole variety of other fantastic items generously donated. Tickets for the raffle are on sale now from the Mucky Duck, and more details of the event can be found on page 17 of this issue, and on Facebook by searching for Robin Kirkby, who is the man behind this whole thing. Big thanks to him, and also the Mucky Duck for generously hosting the event - please make it special!

It’s simply that here in the UK their prices can be inflated for the purpose of fleecing our National Health Service. So any male expats who are thinking about repatriating, but worry about the cost of their favourite ‘high’, back home, might want to consider living in Ringaskiddy, County Cork. The menfolk there say that fumes from the local Pfizer viagra factory affect them in a way that can sometimes be a bit of a nuisance. Not only that - the dogs are affected as well, but they never complain. Better make your move quickly though, because Ringaskiddy is attracting a lot of new residents. In a vaguely similar vein the trend for revealing all about sexual harassment in the work place continues to grow. Many of those cases date back to the 70’s, a bygone age before the invention of political correctness, when police hadn’t even grasped the importance of dealing with rape cases in a sensitive unbiased way. Times have certainly changed, and now a major concern is how to police the online grooming of children. By it’s very nature online grooming is a far greater threat than workplace harassment ever was. It is covert, anonymous, and a paedophiles’ paradise. Very often parents have no idea that their daughters’ - or sons - are being targeted. But in the UK at least a growing number of ‘paedophile hunter’ groups have formed, with the sole aim of flushing out the adults who prey on children via social media. Members of the groups pose as children aged from 11 to 15 on the sites, wait until a suspect
makes the first move, then agree to meet. With recordings of the whole process and meetings as evidence, including a citizens’ arrest, it is claimed that ‘paedophile groups’ are becoming increasingly successful. In 2016 44% of prosecutions for the crime of meeting a child following sexual grooming, used evidence gathered by paedophile hunters, an increase from 11 per cent in 2011. Despite those figures the methods used by paedophile hunters can be controversial. Some groups have live streamed their ‘sting’ operations, all of them are taking risks, and some police forces see them as undermining official procedures. But there are also police forces which recognise they are under resourced, and are prepared to work more closely with them, while group members maintain that they have more time to devote to what they believe to be essential work. Who is right? Is there in fact a right way at all to deal with the growing threat to children. Even more worrying perhaps is how to keep one step ahead of similar potential risks in a rapidly developing age of social media and what might lie beyond.

Back here in Hull, on December 17th 1965, the first passenger ferry set off across the North Sea to Rotterdam. The plan for a ferry terminal hadn’t been well received, just as today plans for a cruise ship terminal are being opposed, but what was then North Sea Ferries, now P & O, flourished. By 1974 the worlds’ two largest ferries were put into service on the route to meet demand, and in 1994 they were replaced by two even bigger vessels. Unfortunately someone miscalculated. The latest ferries wouldn’t fit through the entrance to the dock, so berths had to be built on the river. Some blunders aren’t confined to the Land of Smiles.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... For good measure As an additional extra. ‘Good measure’ has been part of the language since the first English-speaking ‘purveyor of fyne goodes’ set up shop, and it just means ‘an ample or generous quantity of that which is sold by measure’. The first instance of the expression in print is found where many other first coinages originated, in John Wyclif ’s Middle English translation of the Bible, circa 1384, in Luke 6:38: Thei schulen yyue in to youre bosum a good mesure, and wel fillid, and schakun togidir, and ouerflowynge; for bi the same mesure, bi whiche ye meeten, it schal be metun ayen to you. [They shall give into your bosom a good measure, and wellfilled, and shaken together, and overflowing; for by the same measure, by which ye mete, it shall be meted again to you.] We might expect the extended term ‘in good measure’ to refer to an abundance of something. In fact, its rather the reverse. ‘Measured’ also means ‘moderate; restrained’ and if a person acts ‘in good measure’ they are being especially temperate in their actions. As it happens, Wyclif was also one of the first to put that meaning of ‘good measure’ into print, in a collection of sermons known as Controversial Tracks, circa 1400, which was directed at the clergy: Ye shulden lyue on ye puple in good mesure as Paul biddin. [You be sustained by the people in moderation, as St. Paul bids you.] It wasn’t until much later that the use of the phrase ‘good
measure’ returned to its original ‘ample’ meaning. In the 19th century people began to express the idea of things being ‘thrown in for good measure’, that is, added as a complimentary extra portion. In 1811, the British mathematician Patrick Kelly wrote The Universal Cambist, which was an exhaustive study of the weights and measures in use in different parts of the world and a method of converting from one to another. In the notes on Swedish measurement he included: Corn, and other dry commodities, are measured by Tunnor. The Tunne is divided into 32 Kappar. But to every Tunna of wheat 4 Kappar are allowed for good measure. Before long, the expression ‘for good measure’ began to be used figuratively, that is, in circumstances where no actual measurement was taking place. An example appears in the May 1850 edition of the American magazine Littell’s Living Age, in a report of a public flogging in California: ‘Give him another for good measure’ - ‘Hit him again’ - were the sounds which greeted his ears. ‘For good measure’ might appear to be linked to the ‘Baker’s dozen’, as both phrases express the notion of a little extra being added above the absolute requirement. In fact, the two phrases aren’t connected, ‘Baker’s dozen’ being much older. While the extra that was added ‘for good measure’ was added willingly, the extra that made up a Baker’s dozen was added under threat of severe punishment. In medieval England, being light in the loaves was as risky as being ‘light in the loafers’ was prior to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the 1967 Sexual Offences Act..

This year’s competition took place last weekend at True Arena, and congratulations go to the winners, France. Some photos of the winners and other activities can be found on the Facebook page (Red Mountain Hua Hin World Cup 2016). The final was played between France and Thailand, and despite their efforts, the score at full time was 0-0, so the final was decided on a penalty shootout, with France eventually triumphing 5 - 4. There was a lso a separate penalty shootout contest between the teams, with the final of that being contested between Spain and England ; this was decided with the last spot kick and the winners were Spain (yet another penalty shootout loss for Engerland!) . Well done to all who took part, and hopefully we will be able to bring you the total raised for Jungle Aid at some future date.

DOPING PANEL AWARD 1977 TOUR DE FRANCE WIN TO THE GOODIES

uK Officials at the UCI, cycling’s world governing body, have handed the winner’s medal for the 1977 Tour de France to The Goodies. Whilst Francois Pedalo admitted that the trio of comedians hadn’t officially entered the event, they were at least relatively drug-free and had owned a bike. “This is quite a surprise” said Graeme Garden, who still has his pair of bicycle clips. “Whilst we didn’t inject cortisone in that particular year or inhale bagfuls of amphetamines, it’s also true that we didn’t visit France. But it turns out that isn’t illegal.” Tim Brooke-Taylor was also taken aback but after checking the rules, agreed that he hasn’t brought the sport into disrepute. “This is lovely, albeit somewhat belated. It just goes to show that if you keep your nose clean, you’ll eventually be rewarded. I could get a tennis grand slam at this rate.”

Bill Oddie, the third Goodie, was sitting in a bush when officials broke the news. Startled, he bit two time keepers before his handler sedated him. Pedalo said that it was tough to choose between The Goodies and Frank Spencer, both of whom had ridden bicycles prominently during 1977, but that the

Michael Crawford, who played Spencer, was said to be ‘deeply upset’ at the decision.
