healthy dogs rounded up and sent to ‘inhumane’ shelters
•As•we have reported many times before, the issue of dogs in both our local area, and Thailand as a whole, pranburi
is a difficult one, with on the one side those concerned about how stray dogs interact with humans in a negative way (road accidents, health and safety concerns), while on the other side those who wish to see dogs treated with care, compassion and in a way that benefits all of us. One of the latter is a Thai Nun in Pranburi, who is well known for taking care of hundreds of dogs and cats, with the assistance of donations and sponsors, at a temple in the area. The animals in her care are checked, treated and vaccinated, and many have been successfully adopted, but last weekend the majority of her dogs were removed from the temple and were to be placed in shelters that some have described as ‘dog hell’. It has also been reported that the accommodation they had at the temple has also been taken down. The reason for this has not been made entirely clear, although some reports have suggested the risk of rabies as the excuse, although this seems odd as these dogs were vaccinated. The Nun, Khun Nid Sirimara, is devastated, after years of dedicating herself to looking after these animals, and is now trying to both retrieve the dogs, and find a new home for them. Friends have offered some land, but much work needs to be done there to provide a home for both the Nun and the animals, so we are appealing on her behalf to our readers to assist in any way you can. Friends and organisations are rallying round to help, but more funds are needed, and should you wish to donate you can do so via Paypal to Sue_j_r@hotmail.com (Indicate: Personal so no charge for sender or receiver, and add a note: For Nun and her dogs). cracking the code Yes it fooled me as well. The announcement that the TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) plan to encourage more Hi End women to visit Pattaya didn’t turn out to be quite what it first seemed did it? They actually meant Hi End women tourists who will spend their Hi End earnings on golf, spa treatments and plenty of posh food. Good thinking, but back to the real world ...... Alan Turing, computer scientist, mathematician and code breaker amongst other things, is often credited as the father of modern computing and artificial intelligence. It could be argued that Charles Babbage got there first in 1830 when he came up with the idea for the first programmable computer, but Babbages concept was never built. Turing had a similar problem with his own Automatic Computing Engine (ACE) in the late 1940’s, which was considered too difficult to engineer and build, but did succeed with a smaller version in 1950. Turing had a brilliant but short career. Born in 1912 he progressed through private schools to Cambridge University, then accepted a place at Princeton University where he studied for his Ph.D in mathematical logic. It was at Princeton that he developed the Turing machine, a computing machine which brought together the fundamental logical principles of the digital computer, but it would be his code breaking work during World War 2 which would earn him huge acclaim. In September 1939 he was recruited to Bletchley Park, the centre of UK intelligence gathering, where he spent the whole of the war, and in 1945 was recruited to another UK government post with the National Physical Laboratory, where he designed the (then un-buildable) ACE and its’ smaller successor. Turings’ final years were spent as Deputy Director of the computing laboratory at Manchester University, where little was known of the person behind the academic. Hardly surprising back then, because Turing was homosexual in a time when it was still illegal. In fact during his time at Manchester his relationship with another man resulted in a conviction for gross indecency, for which he accepted a course of chemical castration as an alternative to a prison sentence. Then last year a stash of Turings’ documents, including letters, discovered in a filing cabinet at the University, revealed much more about what he might have gone on to achieve. Among other things they show that Turing had an interest in developing computers which could play games and compete against each other, but that ‘there always seems to be something more
important to be done.’ They also reveal that he was conducting his own research into radical new areas of computing, and was being asked to lecture at the worlds most prestigious universities. But the documents also pose some questions. Turing had been turning down requests to lecture at American colleges, and in 1953 wrote to a colleague about a cybernetics conference in the US which he had declined to attend, saying that ‘I would not like the journey, and I detest America’. Strange words from someone who had gained his Doctorate and developed his ground breaking Turing Machine in the States. On June 7th 1954 Turing died from cyanide poisoning at the age of 41, but although the verdict on his death was suicide some doubt still remains. This was a man who had gained first hand knowledge of WW2 intelligence while at Bletchley Park, who for some reason had developed a dislike of America, and who had suffered mentally and physically because of his sexuality. The truth may never be known, but we do know that one of Turings’ most prophetic quotes was ‘I propose to consider the question - “can machines think?” ‘

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....A rum do An event that is disreputable or strange. The ‘rum’ in ‘rum do’ is an adjective meaning ‘odd’ or ‘strange’, and nothing to do with the drink rum. The rum has reached us by a tortuous route. In the 16th century the adjectival meaning was almost precisely the opposite of the current sense - it then meant ‘excellent’ or ‘great’. In A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, Eric Partridge lists no fewer than 93 ‘rum’ phrases, many using this earlier meaning; for example: rum buffer - an excellent dog rum chant - a good song rum clout - a fine handkerchief rum doxy - a handsome whore rum kicks - breeches of gold brocade
There must be many more than those on Partridge’s list as ‘rum’ could be used to precede almost anything, but the only ones to survive have the ‘odd, perplexing’ meaning; for example, ‘rum do’ and ‘rum customer’. Why the meaning of ‘rum’ altered isn’t clear. It may be that many of the phrases that employed the earlier ‘good’ meaning applied to people that were good at lawbreaking or disreputable behaviour; for example: rum bubber - a person skilled at stealing silver tankards from inns rum fun - a clever swindle rum diver - a skilled pickpocket rum mizzler - a thief, adapt at escaping rum padder - an upper-class highwayman

He successfully lobbied to have his bong and marijuana returned by police, after standing outside court in his boxers for a month. ‘RETURN MY BONG,’ one of his signs read in large letters, while another read ‘RETURN MY MARIJUANA.’ The 31-year-old also had a T-shirt made which said ‘Return my weed and bong,’ for days when he felt like wearing clothes. It all began when he was arrested for possession of weed, with police seizing his drugs and paraphernalia. Police were called initially when Jeffrey caused a disturbance near vending machines at a hospital where he was being treated for a panic attack. He was charged with possession of marijuana, which has now been dropped. ‘The action of the Crown on this marijuana case has been completely unreasonable,’ Jeffrey told The Record. ‘There should have been no need to continue (protesting) for such a long time.’ He should be getting his bong and weed back soon – but now has another problem to deal with. Police have charged him with public nudity over his protest in a thong outside Kitchener court in Ontario, Canada.

Toilets in Geneva have been blocked by €100,000 (£88,000) in high-denomination euro banknotes - prompting prosecutors to seek the money’s origin. Swiss media said the first blockage occurred in the vault at UBS bank in Geneva’s financial district. A few days later, back in May, three nearby bistros were found with 500-euro notes stuffed down the pan. Vincent Derouand, from the Geneva prosecutor’s office, said that throwing money away is not a crime - and nor is blocking a toilet. There was no immediate reason to think it was dirty money, he said. Mr Derouand explained: “We are not so interested in the motive but we want to be sure of the origin of the money.” It has reportedly cost many thousands of pounds to unblock the pipes. Mr Derouand added that two people had agreed to compensate the restaurants, which have withdrawn an earlier complaint. It is unclear who will get the cash - which was confiscated during the investigation - if it is found to be lawful. Last year, the European Central Bank said it was discontinuing the 500-euro note over concerns it was being used for illicit activities including money laundering.

This year’s competition is provisonally booked for the weekend of 9th and 10th December, but full details are yet to be announced. The organisers want to raise awareness and get people involved either as players or support as soon as possible so to find out more and be kept in the loop, please email huahinworldcup@gmail.com. Last year’s Facebook page (Red Mountain Hua Hin World Cup 2016) is currently the only other place to get information, but a new page will be set up soon for this year’s competition. There is always a charity element to the competiton, with last year Jungle Aid being the beneficiaries, but this has not been announced yet for this year. There are also sponsorship opportunities, so please contact the organisers on the email address above if you are interested in this as well. Last year’s winners were Thailand, following up their win the previous year, with Sweden and Finland the other winners since the tournament started in 2013.

uK Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton has told his Mercedes team he will only continue to drive for them if they develop an engine that runs on vegetables, after turning vegan in order to save the planet. Hamilton issued the ultimatum just hours after his victory in Singapore put him 28 points clear at the top of the Formula One championship. “It’s time to do something to save the planet, and that something is for me to go vegan,” explained the enthusiastic new vegan who just couldn’t wait to tell you about it. “Of course, some people will say it’s my private jet flights and gas-guzzling cars that are destroying the planet, and that might be doing some harm, but really, it’s that steak you had last night that is killing us all. “Cutting out meat is the one thing we can all do to help the environment, though I

Experts have said that an engine that runs purely on broccoli could have a significant detrimental effect on performance, and therefore Hamilton’s chances of winning this year’s Formula One championship.
