once bitten...

rabid dog bites ten in downtown hua hin

•This• week saw rapid action in the centre of Hua Hin as a rabid dog was caught after having bitten or hua hin

scratched ten people in the Samor Rian community of Soi Phrae Phan behind Wat Hua Hin and in the market area of Chomsin Road. It is not known over what period of time these attacks had happened, but the normal time span between the onset of symptoms in dogs and death is ten days, and the disease can only be spread once the clinical signs have developed. The dog died on Monday after being captured and rabies was confirmed upon veterinarian examination. The area it had been seen was cordoned off after being identified by officials who took a photograph of the dog to show to people. Most of the victims of the dog had already been vaccinated, but one lady scratched by the dog was taken to hospital to be treated. Clearly the authorities now have two major tasks ahead; a short term job of spotting potentially rabid animals, and a long term plan to vaccinate and sterilise stray animals. It is almost inevitable that the dead dog will have passed the disease on to other animals, so everybody needs to be on the lookout for rabies symptoms, particularly in stray dogs and cats; the average time of incubation from exposure to brain involvement is between 3 to 8 weeks, and symptoms include eating unusual items (non-food), fever, seizures, paralysis, hydrophobia, slack jaw, inability to swallow, change in tone of bark, muscular lack of coordination, unusual shyness or aggression, excessive excitability, constant irritability/changes in attitude and behaviour, paralysis in the mandible and larynx and excessive salivation, or frothy saliva. Free vaccinations for dogs and cats are reportedly available at the Hua Hin Dog Centre at Wat Khao Ittisukhato (Tel: 032 532476). AWOL advises calling ahead as they are likely to be busy.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....Keep at bay Prevent, either a person or an event, from advancing nearer. ‘Keep at bay’ (sometimes used as ‘hold at bay’) is one of those expressions that we are likely to know the meaning of because we have picked it up from colloquial use in our youth and worked out the meaning from the context it was used in. The nature of how we learn language allows us to gain a knowledge of what an idiom means without necessarily knowing the meaning of the words contained in it - which I guess is why pages like this one get readers. Anyhow, back to the phrase itself. It seems plausible that ‘at bay’ is a nautical phrase and that the allusion is to a ship that is anchored in a bay and waiting to enter a port. ‘In the offing’ has pretty much the same meaning. As it turns out, we only need one expression in English for that circumstance and ‘keep at bay’ derives from a completely different place. The Old French words ‘abbay’ or ‘abai’ mean ‘barking’. These came into English, first as ‘abay’ and later as ‘at bay’. Hounds that were barking were said in the 14th century to be ‘at a bay’. This is recorded in the English romantic story Guy of Warwick, circa 1330:

(A fat boar went into a forest. He hid in a thick hedge. He [the hound] stood there barking.) To keep at bay meant then to be in a standoff with a baying dog that was intent on killing - a scenario which also gave us the expression ‘baying for blood’. In more placid moments hounds also ‘bay at the moon’. In recent times the phrase ‘keep at bay’ has taken on the more general meaning of ‘fend off ’. The earliest example that can be found of the modern ‘keep at bay’ (as opposed to ‘at a bay’) and which doesn’t refer directly to hunting with dogs is from The Derby Mercury, February 1759, in a report of England’s war with France: We have seen the French kept at bay for the whole campaign, and they are gone into their winter quarters.

making history Just as Neymars’ transfer from Barcelona to Paris St Germain was being fought over at the beginning of this month, a club close to Hull stepped in with a better offer. North Ferriby United tweeted that they were delighted to announce they had pipped the French club to the post, and to prove it Photoshopped Neymar onto their own kit. Their fans’ euphoria though was short lived when the next tweet arrived. ‘In other news, season passes are now 2,845,212 million’. Poor little North Ferriby, they live in hope. They also live just down the road from a newly listed heritage site which has cost far more than even the worlds most expensive football player. The Humber Bridge was given listed status by English Heritage because, apart from being a very pretty bridge, from opening in 1981 it held the record for the longest single span suspension bridge in the World for 16 years. Unfortunately the English Heritage award re-opened a centuries old rivalry between the folk on either side of the river Humber, which the bridge in question spans, because English Heritage thought the award was appropriate during Hulls’ year as City of Culture. In it’s defence Hull was forced to point out - quite rightly - that the bridge isn’t even within its’ boundaries. That it had no part in the construction or siting of the thing, and no influence at all over the decision makers of English Heritage. It was all just a happy coincidence. This didn’t appease the people on the south bank of the Humber one bit, but hasn’t stopped them using the bridge, and fortunately the hail of rocks catapulting back and forth over the river has died down. Which brings us to another pile of rocks, or rather medieval bricks, unearthed a few years ago in the centre of Hull, which are all that remains of a very important city entrance. The Beverley Gate as it is known was part of the 14th century fortress which once surrounded Hull, and it was the place where King Charles the First was denied entry to the town in 1642. An event which resulted in the English Civil War. Then, several years ago when the remains of the Beverley Gate were re-discovered, the resulting hole in the ground was made into a feature, with steps leading down to the remains, a fence around it, and the usual historical information displayed for the benefit of the occasional tourist. Over time the whole thing began to look sad and poorly maintained, which it was, until something had to be done to bring the site in line with plans for a newly paved and smart city centre. And so Hull City Council devised a plan which would have made Hua Hin’s Tessabahn

proud - to fill in the hole. Only to be faced with the threat of another civil war. Many hours of City Planning Committee time were spent deciding what to do, until finally a compromise plan was agreed. Smart new walls with recessed lighting now surround the historic remains, with equally smart (and of course safe) steps leading down to it. The result is clinical, but the safe steps are enabling people to take a closer look at their history. So close in fact that within a week of re-opening children were found to be climbing all over the ancient bricks. A horrified City Council asked parents to keep their children off what is part of their cultural heritage, a request which is falling on deaf ears. Well, it is the school holidays after all. Now back to the phenomenon of old bands releasing new albums. This year is proving to be a bumper one, with the Stones very pleasant offering ‘Blue and Lonesome’, and a welcome reunion album from old Fleetwood Mac members Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie. Even ZZ Top are threatening a new release. But last weeks’ announcement from Bucks Fizz, now known as The Fizz, one time Eurovision winning adult teeny boppers? Please - not them!

match report Hua Hin City FC 3 – 0 Pathum Thani Utd It was our first home fixture for a few weeks, during which recent results had not been going our way, despite some good performances. 3 points were an essential if our team is to fulfil its potential of a top 5 finish. We arrived to a very wet stadium, although the recent storm had thankfully passed over. Some key players were still missing, so the team was far from being at full strength. No.77, Poranarong was making his debut. The match kicked off with many in the crowd expecting a goal fest against a side who were conceding just under 3 goals per match, with very little in response. Pathum Thani actually had the ball in the net first, but the strike was disallowed. It was very unusual these days, but Hua Hin often seemed to be playing 5 up front and 5 in defence. We were quite weak in midfield. After recent matches where the team seemed to be working to a well-rehearsed script, something was missing. Fortunately, our opposition was no so good, so we absorbed any pressure well. Amos was his usual workhorse self, with great support from Arnon, Ali G and Wuttichai. The first goal came midway through the first half, when a Hua Hin corner was defended, but not cleared. The ball was steered back into the 6 yard box, where Arnon was waiting to nod the ball beyond the keeper’s grasp. The rest of the first half was a bit of a non-event, with Hua Hin comfortable at 1 – 0. The second half started with a bit of Pathum Thani pressure, but that was quelled when a Pathum Thani defender put the ball into his own net following a Hua Hin free kick from near to the touch line. That was the killer blow. Hua Hin had another disallowed before Amos grabbed his 4th goal for the club with a well-executed finish, giving the keeper no chance, and killing the game at 3 - 0. It was then just a case of seeing the game out. Natchapon made a couple of good saves to ensure the club achieved its 2nd clean sheet of the season. Not the prettiest game of football, but if you can win 3 – 0 when you aren’t playing as well as you can, just think what you could do with a fully functional team.

Featured Game

Saturday 12th August 2017 Premier League Brighton v Manchester City 23:30 The two teams who seem to be the most widely tipped for the title and relegation respectively, but we don’t think either is a foregone conclusion. The Falmer Stadium will be absolutely rocking for this fixture, and will be like the proverbial extra man, and some of the City players will be a little intimidated we think. Chris Hughton has the experience and know how to get a result from this game, while Guardiola sometimes only appears to have one plan, which is normally enough because of the players at his disposal. The last three or four seasons City have started like a train, winning their opening ten or so fixtures, but we think they may get derailed early here. Home win for the Seagulls.

who needs neymar?

Arsenal had £197,999,999 Neymar bid rejected, claims Arsene Wenger

••

uk Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed the club put in a bid for Barcelona striker Neymar, which was just £1 short of his £198 million release clause. Wenger said it was hugely disappointing when the Spaniards turned down the offer last week and he accused them of acting in a petty manner not worthy of their global status. Wenger dismissed claims that the attempt to land the Brazilian superstar’s signature had been a publicity stunt to fool supporters into thinking Arsenal was actively trying to attract the best talent in the world. “If you look at my record you will see I have never been interested in trying to gain favour with the fans,” the Frenchman said indignantly. “We made a genuine offer for Neymar. However, Barcelona decided they wanted to be childish and hold out for a mere pound more.”

Left: Neymar chooses Emirates sponsored PSG rather than Emirates sponsored Arsenal, after leaving Qatar Air sponsored Barcelona, who are the main rivals to Emirates sponsored Real Madrid. Anyone spotting a theme here? The Frenchman rejected suggestions that Arsenal could have gazumped PSG’s successful offer for Neymar by matching the offer and adding an extra 50 pence on top. “That would just be silly and make us look trivial, but we at Arsenal have a proud tradition in the transfer market and I do not want to jeopardise that,” he insisted. And Wenger added he did have good news regarding landing new signings. “I am delighted to announce that after protracted negotiations former Arsenal favourite Nicklas Bendtner has agreed to come back to our club,” he beamed.
