•AWOL • has commented on the changing face of Hua Hin before, but the current low season has brought hua hin

some of these changes into stark contrast, with very noticable numbers of businesses in many areas both closing and relocating, with a smaller number of new businesses starting up. The centre of the town, though, has seen the most significant change in recent years, and in particular the number of nightlife venues closing and relocating, with two streets in particular becoming new night time destinations for locals and tourists alike, namely sois 80 and 94. The reasons behind some of these moves will be unrelated to how the businesses are performing, but many will be because of the clear drop in trade that has been steadily occurring for some time now. This also presents problems for AWOL, not least in terms of maintaining and attracting advertisers, but more specifically with regard to where to deliver copies of the paper every week; to this end we are currently trying to find out both where readers are getting their copies, as well as which businesses are and are not receiving them. We are running a survey on Facebook to help us determine any alterations that need to be made, aimed at both readers and business owners, and we would like to encourage all readers and business owners to complete the survey so that we can deliver the paper where it is needed most. We are also looking for businesses that would be interested in assisting in the distribution of the paper, in return for discounted or possibly free advertising, depending on the amount of assistance. The survey is called ‘Finding AWOL’ and can be found at https://survey.fbapp.io/finding-awol and we hope you will take the short time to answer the questions; businesses interested in assisting distribution, or simply receiving copies can enter their details in the survey or email info@awolonline.net.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....Jobs for the boys Favouritism where jobs or other benefits are given to friends and acquaintances. ‘The boys’ in this phrase means any group of men who share a common interest or background. It has been suggested that the phrase derives from the class system in England, which used to - and to an extent still does - maintain an ‘old boys network’. This confines power and patronage to a closed upper class group, that is, the ‘old boys’ of English public schools. However, there’s no record of ‘jobs for the boys’ being used in a UK context until well into the 20th century. It had previously been used widely in the USA; for example, this item from the New York newspaper The Syracuse Herald, October 1913:

“Dispel pessimism - create trade, confidence and brightness in the period of reconstruction. We will aid in creating new jobs for the boys in the Service when they return without crowding out those who have taken their place.” The company wasn’t shy of exploiting a marketing opportunity and added to the above that it was the readers’ “New Patriotic Duty to Use Electric Signs”.

Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Email it to us on submissions@awolonline.net

“Party government isn’t organized for efficiency, nor to serve the people. It is organized to provide jobs for the boys.” ‘Jobs For The Boys’ had a different meaning when it was used as a slogan following both WWI and WWII. This was an expression of public gratitude for the demobbed soldiers who were returning home. A 1918 advert for the American United Illuminating Co. promised to:

mr churchill During a visit to America, Winston Churchill was invited to a buffet luncheon at which cold fried chicken was served. Returning for a second helping, he asked politely, “May I have some breast?” “Mr. Churchill,” replied the hostess, “in this country we ask for white meat or dark meat.” Churchill apologized profusely. The following morning, the lady received a magnificent orchid from her guest of honour. The accompanying card read: “I would be most obliged if you would pin this on your white meat.”

this is real life On August 4th 1862 the US government collected its’ first income tax. Trump should be grateful for that far sighted move which now enables him to run (sic) the country, even though tax is likely to be the least of his personal worries. It was also the date - in 1916 - when Denmark handed over the Danish West Indies to the States for 25 million dollars. A tidy little sum back then. I wonder how much Gibraltar would fetch now? More importantly, at least for Hull and mathematics, it was the date in 1834 when John Venn was born. Earlier this year THAB reported that work on decorating a local bridge, close to where he was born, with Venn diagrams had been suspended due to bad weather. The rain was interfering with the paint. The job has since been completed, but it has to be said that crossing the bridge by bus doesn’t allow the effect to really be appreciated. (Note to self - take a walk there when it stops raining.) What is interesting about John Venn is the sheer range of his interests and talents. At the time of his birth Johns’ father Henry was rector of a parish in Hull, and his grandfather - another John - had also been a rector. John junior was expected to follow in their footsteps. At that time of course being born into a wealthy family opened a lot of doors, and having a mother who came from one of the wealthiest families in Hull no doubt helped. Like his father and grandfather he attended Cambridge University before joining the ministry, and in 1858 he was ordained as Deacon at Ely before going back to Cambridge as a lecturer in moral sciences. Eventually though his interests in maths and logic took over, along with a passion for building machinery. Among other

things he invented a machine for bowling cricket balls, which it is said clean bowled one of the Australian cricket teams’ top stars four times when that team visited Cambridge. Johns’ grandfather was another multi talented man of his time who had a lot in common with Hull born William Wilberforce. Both fought for the abolition of the slave trade and cruel sports, and for prison reform. As well as leading the anti-slavery movement Wilberforce was one of the founders of the RSPCA - the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Surely it is no coincidence that both also attended Cambridge University. While Venns’ father and grandfather had been contemporaries of Wilberforce, and had shared his philanthropic ideals, the younger John lived through a time when the industrial revolution was already well underway. Among his contemporaries were Brunel and Babbage, Faraday and Morse, Singer and Otis. There is little wonder that he himself was drawn towards the development of machinery in such a rapidly developing world. But he remains best remembered for that diagram, such a brilliantly simple concept which has stood the test of time. Finally, your thought for the week. With Pattaya now being referred to as ‘quote’ - short for Queen of the Eastern Seaboard, surely Hua Hin deserves to be known as ‘kows’ ?

LOCAL SPORTS hua hin city F.C

Hua Hin City F. C. is the local professional team formed in 2011, playing their matches at the Takiab Stadium in Khao Takiab. results sunday 30th july 2017 Muangkan United 1 - 0 Hua Hin City

match report Muangkan Utd 1 – 0 Hua Hin City FC Kleeb Bua is always a great stadium to visit. Fantastic in its own right, but with its beautiful backdrop of the Kanchanaburi hills, and stacked with history not too far away it is special. The only problem is that it’s always so damned hot. Last season the mercury was at 44oC when the teams kicked off. Earlier this season it was at 40oC, and yesterday it was a cool 37oC. We arrived at the stadium, only to be told that the team was beset by injuries. We would be fielding probably our weakest side against a team striving for a higher level. FIXTURES However, it wasn’t really noticeable, and they all played well as a team. Nobody stood saturday 5th august 2017 out as being out of their depth. It was a good all round Hua Hin performance. The Hua Hin City v Pathum Thani Utd 17:30 entire squad have been moulded into an effective football team, irrespective of who is on the field. thai League 4 I think we were fortunate that Muangkan’s star man, their No.23 who did most of the Western Region table damage in our previous 2 games was not starting. He did make an appearance for the Team P GD PTS last 30 minutes, and still had that star quality at t4 level. 1 Suphanburi B 21 32 53 The match kicked off with Muangkan very much in the ascendancy for the first 15 2 Muangkan United 21 14 43 minutes, but our makeshift defence played very well, holding back the hosts firmly. 3 Assumption United 21 16 40 Hua Hin gradually fought their way into contention, but suffered a devastating blow 4 BTU United 21 13 40 when Muangkan scored directly from a free kick, leaving Natchapon very little 5 Look Isan 21 -1 27 chance of saving. 6 Ratchaburi Mitr Phol B 21 -7 27 The game continued flowing from end to end, with most of the real goal scoring 7 Nonthaburi 21 -7 23 chances falling Muangkan’s way. In fact it was fortunate Muangkan’s strikers were having a bad day, because on another day, they’d have probably gone in at half time 8 IPE Samut Sakhon United 21 -9 22 with 3 or 4 goals in the bag. The first half ended 1 – 0. 9 Hua Hin City 21 -10 20 The second half continued in much the same way. Hua Hin were unlucky not to 10 Pathum Thani United 21 -44 1 snatch a draw, but Muangkan were unlucky not to score a lot more. It was just an entertaining game of end to end football, with Muangkan always the most likely to score. We shouldn’t be too down losing by a single goal to a very good Muangkan. I’m sure Coach Sebastian will pick up the pieces, apply a few sticking plasters, and we’ll be fighting fit when we take on Pathum Thani next weekend.

50 years of...drugs? ENGLISH FA ADMIT TO use OF PERFORMANCE-INHIBITING DRUGS

••

uk Hot on the heels of other doping scandals, the English FA have finally confessed to using performance inhibiters on the national side. In an admission confirming what the majority of England fans have long suspected, details of a long term self-handicapping regime have emerged stretching back nearly 50 years; a plan dedicated at taking the most graceful and elegant ball-players in the English game and turning them into leaden, ballistophobic oxen with four left feet. ‘The initial euphoria of the win in 1966 quickly wore off ‘, admitted an FA spokesman, speaking from their North London test facility, ‘but we realised that the genie was out of the bottle. We would never again be able to live up to this performance and level of expectation. It would be unfair to the squad, manager and training staff to labour under this irksome burden.’ It was then that the FA looked to a number of pharmaceutical companies,

Above: Rooney: one of the control group or drug diminished? offering up the team as a test bed for chemical cocktails aimed at underachieving. An initial deal was brokered, but almost scuppered in 1970 by the team’s unwillingness to conform. ‘God bless those Brazilians, saved us a huge embarrassment, not to mention the large wad of cash we would’ve had to give back’, joked the spokesman. Since then there have been more stringent rules and regulations in place, but there have been been occasional blips where managers have taken it upon themselves to suspend

the programme. ‘Yes, Italia 1990, that was a right debacle: we had to do some real fire-fighting there, and the transgressors dealt with to the full extent of FA Law. Why do you think Robson aged so badly afterwards, eh?’ ‘As with any comparative test, you would expect there to be a placebo group to act as a control for validation purposes, and every now and then, we drop a couple of them into the squad, just as proof of concept,’ the spokesman continued. ‘Next tournament match you watch, try and work out whether that plodding, ungainly dobbin is just natural talentlessness or chemically induced. It’s fascinating. Oh – and they’ll lose 2-1 anyway.’ The drugs scandal could see England banned from going to the 2018 World Cup. Although a FIFA spokesman commented ‘Or we could just let them play all their qualifiers as usual. The end result will be the same.’
