air asia flights to kuala lumpur could start by end of 2017
•The• news late last week that Air Asia has applied to operate daily flights between Hua Hin and Kuala hua hin
Lumpur came too late for our last issue, but is welcome news for the town should it become a reality. Earlier this year the local hotels association urged for the development of the airport and routes available, and it seems as though they are going to get what they pushed for, although it remains to be seen firstly whether the Thai airports authority approves the application, and secondly whether the demand will be there for the service. There are, of course, some concerns for residents; while it is only likely to be one flight a day, those living under or near the flightpath may be inconvenienced by noise, and the other main issue could be the potential for increased traffic around departure and arrival times. These would, however, be a bigger concern should this route be successful and extra flights and additional routes are added as a consequence, and the trade off between increased prosperity for the town and those negative potential impacts would be much harder to justify. Having said that, more domestic flights to destinations like Phuket, Trat and Hat Yai would be welcomed by most residents we believe. There have been two previous attempts to operate international flights to and from Hua Hin, the last one being Berjaya Air in 2012, who also flew for a short time to Subang airport in Kuala Lumpur. Several domestic routes have also come and gone, so whether this route will succeed is not guaranteed, and Air Asia also want landing fees and rental charges for airport facilities waived in the initial stages of operation to get the route started, which indicates some caution on their part. A decision is expected on the application within the next ten days, and if approved, flights could begin by the end of the year.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....In spades In abundance; very much. It’s easy to believe that this expression derives from the imagery of digging with spades and that ‘in spades’ is just short for ‘in spadefuls’. However, the spades concerned here aren’t the garden tools but the suit of cards. Spades is the highest ranking suits in the game of Contract Bridge, a very popular pastime in the USA in the early 20th century, which is when and where the phrase originated. Despite the agricultural-sounding name and the shovel-like shape, the suit in cards has nothing directly to do with garden spades. Playing Cards originated in Asia and spread across Europe around the 14th century, arriving in England a little later than in Spain, Italy and Germany. The Italian versions of early cards used the suits Cups, Swords, Coins and Batons, which, on migration to England, became Hearts, Spades, Diamonds and Clubs. The image for Spades on English and French cards looks somewhat like that of the German Acorn or Leaf suits, but its origin is revealed by its name rather than its shape. The Spanish and Italian for sword is ‘espada’ and ‘spada’ respectively, hence the suit ‘Swords’ became anglicized as ‘Spades’. We have been ‘calling a spade a spade’ for many centuries, but the expression ‘in spades’ is a 20th century US coinage. The term was often used before that in relation to card games,
where Bridge contracts might be entered into in the minor suits of Clubs or Diamonds or, for the higher scores, ‘in Hearts’ or, best of all, ‘in Spades’. The figurative meaning, that is, the non-cards-related ‘very greatly’ meaning, isn’t found before the 1920s. The American journalist and writer Damon Runyon used the expression that way in a piece for Hearst’s International magazine, in October 1929: “I always hear the same thing about every bum on Broadway, male and female, including some I know are bums, in spades, right from taw.” It isn’t possible to be sure that the figurative ‘in spades’ derives from Bridge, but the coincidence of the time and place of the origin of the expression and the popularity of the card game certainly does suggest a connection.

this is real life Before you all rush off to book your flights from Hua Hin to Kuala Lumpur for a bit of Christmas shopping, why not consider going to Chiang Mai instead? After all it has been voted Asias’ best place to visit. Other advantages are that by December the rains should have eased off enough to allow you to visit the waterfalls, and at least you can be sure that transport will actually be available to get you there. On the down side travelling from Hua Hin to Chiang Mai by road could be a calculated risk, given the way Thailands’ road death toll continues to rise. But where there is a down side there is always hope for improvement, which should be achieved if everyone heeds proposals from the powers that be, and begin to be nice to each other. Back in the real world - or what passes for it in the UK - it is impossible to miss the upcoming 20th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, and by the time you read this her sons William and Harry will have aired personal memories of their mother in a TV programme. Now I am not anti-royalist. They do some good things and attract tourists. It can’t be easy to be born into a life which is mapped out for them from day one, despite the privileges that life entails. To live with constant media attention, every wardrobe malfunction or bad hair day broadcast around the world. It is hardly surprising that one or two in the past have abandoned that kind of life, or, like Princess Anne, been strong enough to strike a balance between duty and personal life. They are all human, as Prince Harry has shown this year by admitting to needing help in finally coming to terms with his mothers’ death. An event no child should have to face, but the sad truth is that many do, albeit not so publicly. And it is also true that most people will, sooner or later, lose their parents. It is something which most of us can deal with privately and in our own ways, but not if your mother happens to have been the most iconic royal in the world. Prince William has said that he wants his own children to grow up with fond memories of their grandmother Diana, and of course they should know what she was really like. But the fact is they haven’t really known her at all. Anyone who was born missing a grandparent or two will know full well that no amount of family albums and reminiscing can make them seem real. To a child they are usually just a part of their family history which has gone, remembered only by parents, aunts and uncles.
Unfortunately next months’ 20th anniversary seems to have provided opportunities for the lid to be lifted on yet more stories about Diana, together with a plan for a 10 part US drama called ‘Feud’. Due to begin production this autumn the drama will of course focus on the time between her divorce and death, and is bound to be a winner. So we know that it will be impossible for Prince Williams’ children to ever be completely free from the speculation and stories surrounding the grandmother they never knew. No doubt if they are interested enough they will decide for themselves later, using family reminiscences and palace archives to fill any gaps. For now, once that anniversary is over, maybe William and Harry should think about leaving the dust to finally begin to settle, out of respect not only for Diana, but for those children and their ‘grandma Camilla’. Because as long as they continue to talk so openly others will continue to perpetuate the myth.

match report Look E-San FC 1 – 1 Hua Hin City FC It was so strange returning to a venue we’d only played at 2½ months ago for yet another league match. However, this time weather conditions were good and the Hua Hin side were vastly different to the team who played here in May. We were a little weakened in defence this week with the unexpected injury to Ali M during the pre-match warm up. That combined with the continued absence of Roland, we couldn’t afford further injury in that position. The inevitable happened, and we did suffer another unfortunate injury half way through the match, and top FIXTURES goal scorer Ali G was forced to play the 2nd half in defence. sunday 30th july 2017 I’m not sure if this was a physical match, or whether the referee had a new whistle, Muangkan United v Hua Hin City 16:00 and wanted to test it. Rarely did we seem to go more than 20 seconds without his whistle being blown. I actually started to believe it was a sympathy seeking tactic by thai League 4 Look E-San trying to disrupt the flow of the game, whilst picking up free kicks in Western Region table the process. Thankfully, the referee did not see fit to blow his whistle when there was Team P GD PTS blatant diving inside the penalty area. Hua Hin had the perfect start within 3 minutes 1 Suphanburi B 20 31 50 of the start when Wuttichai found himself unmarked in the penalty area, and a loose 2 Muangkan United 20 13 40 ball fell at his feet. He didn’t need any further invitation to blast the ball home. The 3 Assumption United 20 16 39 Look E-San goal after 17 minutes was a bit of a rare defensive error by Hua Hin. A 4 BTU United 20 11 37 strong defence has been Hua Hin’s trademark all season, but the Look E-San defender 5 Ratchaburi Mitr Phol B 20 -6 27 was left unmarked, just off the centre of the Hua Hin penalty area. He came on with about 20 minutes to play, and did impress with his energy and obvious skill. It was not the result we were looking for. A win would have taken us further up the league, but this result saw us drop a place. uk Plucky underdogs Manchester City are going to do their best to survive the season with a mere 673,832 players on their books after the weekend sale of Aleks Kolarov to Roma. “Well, ideally we’d want to start the season at a full strength 673,833 players,” said manager Pep Guardiola. “But we’re a resilient group, if we can’t get the replacement for Aleks and have to manage with just 673,832 players, then… well, you know, we’re fighters.” The majority of players who are on Manchester City’s books are currently out on loan to lower league teams or foreign leagues clubs – there is a team in the Second division that is currently made up entirely of Manchester City loanees, and an entire league in South America made up of Manchester City teenagers looking for experience. One promising young Polish midfielder is on loan to a family in Bridlington to do
keepie-uppies in their back garden. “Well, we’d never have been able to afford as talented a player as Tomasz to stand in our back garden doing keepieuppies,” said Simon Williams, who had a Mexican defender on loan from Chelsea last season to do headers against the wall. “So these loans work out brilliantly for us as we get a top player doing keepieuppies in the back garden, and Tomasz gets all the experience that comes from doing keepie-uppies in the back garden.” It is thought that by 2024, all teams in all leagues across the planet will be made up solely with promising young players on loan from Manchester City.
