A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....Horse feathers Rubbish, nonsense. This term, which was originally the single word horsefeathers, but is now also widely written as two words, is of American origin and its use is largely restricted to the USA. Those of us from other parts of the world will know the term from the Marx Brothers’ 1932 film Horse Feathers, in which Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff (Groucho Marx) is unwisely appointed as the president of Huxley College. Horsefeathers, which is said by J. E. Lighter’s Historical Dictionary of American Slang to be a euphemism for horseshit, is reported as being coined by the comic-strip artist and writer, William Morgan “Billy” de Beck. The authoritative journal ‘American Speech’ printed this in their December 1928 issue:

TAD) - A TAD Lexicon. In part 46 of that work, published in 1927, we have the first citation of horsefeathers in print: “The cashier’s department - Bah - Horsefeathers. He wouldn’t give you a ticket to see Halley’s Comet.” Both Dorgan and de Beck used jocular language and are credited with new coinages; for example, gate-crasher (Dorgan) and heebie-jeebies (de Beck). Either could plausibly have coined horsefeathers. It seems likely to have been brought to the public via the popular media as it appears many times in print soon after 1927, which indicates a rapid and widespread take-up that isn’t common for phrases that spread by word of mouth.

“Mr. William De Beck, the comic-strip comedian responsible for ‘Barney Google,’ assumes credit for the first actual use of the word horsefeathers”.

Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Email it to us on submissions@awolonline.net

Billy de Beck was the author of the popular cartoon Barney Google, which frequently featured dialogues with a horse - his sidekick Spark Plug. He also created a short cartoon film called Horsefeathers, which appeared in US cinemas in 1928. The term began life in the late 1920s. At that time the American etymologist Leonard Zwilling published an annotated dictionary of the work of the cartoonist T. A. Dorgan (a.k.a.

you’ve been schooled! It’s that time of the year again. When Alice Coopers’ pension pot gets its’ annual boost of royalties from the constant playing of ‘School’s Out’, dress shops make a killing, and limousine hire is fully booked. Yes - it’s the end of the school year here in the UK. An event now celebrated in style - at least for those pupils who can’t wait to turn their backs on it. But it can also be a scary time. Many of my fellow pupils way back when went straight from school to work at 16, often because of financial pressures at home. It was literally a case of leaving school on a Friday and starting work two days later, with all the ‘grown up’ stuff that entailed. It would have been good to have a ‘Prom’ to celebrate our change of direction into a new life, if only our parents could have afforded it! Now of course parents must thank Buddha for credit cards. It isn’t just the school leavers who need that splash of cash though. A whole industry has grown around the need for all school children to take a gift for their form teachers before each summer holiday, as a token of their thanks for putting up with them for a whole year. Which of course teachers do deserve, even if the tokens of thanks are instigated more by parents than by their offspring. So the dilemma of what to buy for teacher is one usually faced by parents. Alcohol maybe doesn’t give quite the right impression, even though it might be the one thing teachers need. Flowers? Does ‘Miss’ have a house big enough for 30 bouquets? OK then - chocolates. Enough to provide her with five boxes a week for the entire holiday. And what if ‘Miss’ is a ‘Sir’? One Hull Dad, wanting to avoid the potential hazards of flowers and chocs, decided to buy the latest novel for his little boy to give his (female) teacher, only to be greeted with ‘A BOOK! What’s she going to do with THAT! Yes - silly Daddy should have got a Kindle download instead. Or even better one of the appropriately packaged small garden plants on sale from a national retailer, one of the new ways to fill that sales gap between garden furniture and Halloween costumes. Not that the distinction between seasonal sales bothers some retailers too much. One supplier of faux Christmas trees has just announced their ‘Christmas in July’ event - but back to books. On July 21st 2007 the final book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, went on sale world wide, breaking all book sales records for its’ author J K Rowling. Is it really only 10 years? Harry Potter seems to have been around forever. Like Doctor Who, except that he really

has been around forever, and is finally having a sex change. Change is afoot in Bangkok as well, with the announcement that by 2021 all power cables in the city will be underground. I’m sure the Governor of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority means well, but has he really considered the logistics? He might want to take a look at Hulls’ efforts to be ready for this years City of Culture. Our regular reader will know that despite four years notice of the event there is still some work in progress here, in a city centre that would fit into Nana Plaza. Well - a slight exaggeration - Lumpini Park. On the plus side the MEA will try to liaise with the telephone company to bury their cables at the same time. A sensible plan, just don’t hold your breath, and spare a thought for all those people in Bangkok who will suddenly be deprived of their dodgy power supplies.

match report Suphanburi B FC 3 – 2 Hua Hin City FC Before we departed Hua Hin, I think even though the most optimistic of us were not expecting too much from a high flying Suphanburi, who are currently 7 points clear at the top of the league. However, we knew our team were getting stronger with each match, and they would give 110% regardless of the result. We are not the best team in the league yet, so that is all we can ask. When we arrived at a very hot, beautiful Suphanburi Provincial Stadium, we were greeted with the news that because it was an International weekend, the Suphanburi A team did not have a match, so they would be fielding 8 of their first team squad. Personally, with promotion out of the question for this season, I saw this as a great chance to see our side play competitive football against one of Thailand’s top sides. We could see from the pre-match warm up that we were not playing against the young kids who had featured in the 2 previous matches this season. The first half started, and I was wondering what the t1 hype was all about. Hua Hin were matching Suphanburi in every quarter. Suphanburi broke the deadlock with a penalty. It was an unfortunate foul, and a well converted goal – no complaints. Not long after, Amos broke through the Suphanburi defence, and equalised with a well-positioned shot. This was encouraging, because our centre-forward did this 2 more times as the game progressed against a top notch defence. He scored one more, and hit the crossbar with the third. The Amos equaliser unfortunately woke Suphanburi up. The t1 professionals just knocked the game up a couple of gears and scored a couple of beautiful goals. Their second was just magic. Their No.20 seemed to have the ball glued to his boot as he turned a couple of times inside the Hua Hin penalty area. Surely one of the prettiest goals in the league this season. Hua Hin came out for the 2nd half with their heads high, despite being 2 goals in arrears. I think they outplayed the t1 opposition. When Amos snatched his second, the difference this time was Suphanburi couldn’t turn it up a gear. Hua Hin were in the ascendancy, and were unlucky not to share the points. League position is not so important for the rest of this season, although we will improve. The players will have learned an awful lot from this game, and we should thank Suphanburi for the opportunity, although I doubt they see it the same way – at least 4 of their stars picked up yellow cards. A moral victory. hash house harriers

Above: Kyle Walker gives the thumbs up to his new club’s treatment table Brighton or West Brom and claim that ‘he’s looking forward to getting on with this next stage in my career’. Manchester City were nearly convincingly enthusiastic about the move. “We look forward to welcoming

whichever young exciting talent we’ve bought this week to the club and we are sure he will thrive in whatever endeavour he is being brought in to do,” said a spokesperson for the club.
