cycle horror

yet another terrible accident on local roads

•An• accidental collision between a pedestrian and a cyclist that led to a horrific coming together of the cha am

cyclist and a passing coach, has graphically demonstrated how dangerous the roads are here, and in particular for anyone on two wheels. The accident occurred on the busy beach road in Cha Am at around midday on Sunday, near the end of Soi Cha-Am Nua 3. A video of the incident was posted online by Thai news website Thai Rath, which is thought to have been from a CCTV camera at that spot. The video shows a pedestrian walking north at the edge of the road and moving out into the road as she moves around a parked pickup truck, at the exact moment both the cyclist and the slow moving coach are passing in the opposite direction; the cyclist had little room to avoid colliding with the pedestrian, and the glancing blow sends her under the nearside front wheels of the coach, which stops almost immediately. It is unfortunately very clear on the video that the woman, named later as Suchanan Santijitrungreuang, was very seriously injured, and while she was rushed to hospital was declared dead later that evening. We would like to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the victim. No fault can be attached to any of the participants, but it does seem clear that this road is not really suitable for such large vehicles to traverse unless sufficient provision is made for both pedestrians and two wheeled road users as well; in other words, pavements and cycle lanes, or the exclusion of buses and coaches. Properly controlled and enforced parking areas would also help to avoid pedestrians having to venture onto the road and other vehicles having to try and avoid them. We can only hope that this tragic accident will at least result in some action along these lines to prevent such incidents in the future.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....Go the whole hog To perform some act or adopt some opinion fully and thoroughly. ‘Go the whole hog’ is an American expression. Whilst the word ‘hog’ has been in use in England since the 14th century, by the time that the phrase was coined, ‘hog’ had been largely superseded there by ‘pig’. No one in the UK ‘went the whole hog’ until the phrase migrated east from the USA in the 1830s. Oddly, although the phrase originated in the USA and other parts of the English-speaking world have adopted it, the Americans themselves gave up on the phrase and now prefer the variant ‘go whole hog’. We can’t be 100% sure of the origin of the expression, but it is likely that it derives from a rather obscure satirical work by the English poet and hymn writer, William Cowper. Written at a time when Christian authors felt no misgivings about poking fun at other religions, the piece teases Muslims over the supposed ambiguity of the restrictions against eating pork as specified in the Qur’an. The gist of the poem is that, while sampling each part of a hog to test which part wasn’t permissible to eat, the whole hog is eaten. The Love of the World Reproved: or, Hypocrisy Detected, William Cowper, 1782: Thus says the prophet of the Turk; Good musselman, abstain from pork! There is a part in every swine No friend or follower of mine

May taste, whate’er his inclination, On pain of excommunication. Much controversy straight arose, These choose the back, the belly those; By some ‘tis confidently said He meant not to forbid the head, While others at that doctrine rail, And piously prefer the tail. Thus, conscience freed from every clog, Mahometans eat up the hog. Cowper may have had only a loose grasp of Islamic theology, but he did influence others who later took up the phrase ‘the whole hog’ to mean ‘the whole thing’. ‘Go the whole hog’ first started appearing in print in newspapers in the USA in 1827 and the earliest example that can be found is from the New York paper The Commercial Advertiser, December 28, 1827. The use of the phrase became widespread during the United States presidential election of 1828, in which the enthusiastic supporters of Andrew Jackson were called ‘whole hog’ Jacksonites. An early example of that usage is found in The Middlesex Gazette, January 1828: Mr. Barbour, you know, was formerly the Speaker, but not being willing “to go the whole hog,” as the Jacksonites have it, they would not permit him again to be elevated to that high station.

missionary A missionary is sent into deepest darkest depths of Africa to live with a tribe. He spends years with the people, teaching them to read, write and good Christian values. One thing he particularly stresses is the evil of sexual sin. “Thou must not commit adultery or fornication!” One day the wife of one of the Tribe’s noblemen gives birth to a white baby. The village is shocked and the chief is sent by his people to talk with the missionary. “You have taught us of the evils of sexual sin, yet here a black woman gives birth to a white child. You are the only white man who has ever set foot in our village. Anyone can see what’s going on here!” The missionary replies, “No, no, my good man. You are mistaken. What you have here is a natural occurrence - what is called an albino. Look to thy yonder field. See a field of white sheep, and yet amongst them is one black one. Nature does this on occasion.” The chief pauses for a moment then says, “Tell you what, you don’t say anything about the sheep, I won’t say anything about the white baby.”

transformational Last weekend marked 50 years since the process of decriminalising homosexuality began in the UK. It was also the weekend when the Church of England Synod met to discuss special services for transgender people, and the birth was announced of a baby to a transgender man in Gloucestershire. Now, before you all start accusing THAB of prejudice, that is certainly not the case. I know and have worked with several people who are transgender, gay, or bisexual. I know how many struggle to obtain sex change procedures under our National Health system, or who, even now, can struggle to come to terms with their sexuality. And believe it or not Hull is a remarkably easy going place. People don’t care who their neighbours are as long as they don’t make too much noise and keep their net curtains clean. So I have to wonder why some in the LGBT community seem to want much more than acceptance and recognition. Take for example the idea of special church services, which will be celebrations for people who have changed sex. Maybe even with a second baptism. Surely they are still the same person inside (apart from the obvious tweaks) as the one who knew that they were born in the wrong body? Their bodies have just been modified to fit with what they have always known in their minds, a change which is meant to make them comfortable with who they are. It doesn’t make them different people. OK they look different, but if their religious beliefs are strong enough to want a special church service to mark their transition, surely they must believe that their god still knows who they are? Even more puzzling and potentially controversial is the case of the ‘transgender’ birth. The mother had already legally changed sex from female to male, so had registered his new name, but thenhad a break from completing transition in order to have a baby. He is shown on the babies birth certificate as the mother, but with his new male name. All quite logical if you are following the plot, and not the first such case. The puzzling part for me is why? To which the obvious answer of course is that he wanted a child - the most natural thing in the world, and certainly no less common among the LGBT community than anywhere else. But surely, having grown up knowing that he wasn’t a girl, did he really have such a strong maternal instinct? Let’s not forget that he is still only 21, so would have begun his transition in his teens. Not a procedure which his doctors and therapists would have agreed to lightly.

But aside from all that the baby will grow up knowing that she was born to a mother who was a man, and with no father other than an anonymous sperm donor. Of course there are many children now who have similar starts in life, whether conceived by artificial insemination, carried by surrogate mothers, adopted by gay couples, or simply bred to order by Christiano Ronaldo. But however genuine those parents are, do they ever stop to consider how their children will react as they grow up? And now that you have been driven to grab a Chang, if you have ever wondered how spam got it’s name, now we know. It was named after Spam. Yes that iconic meat in a tin which had a song especially written for it by the Monty Python team. Back in the days when e mailing was growing, and many computer nerds were Python fans, the repetitive ‘spam’ lyric was likened to the repetitive nature of unwanted mail.

On This Day Finally - on July 14th 1967 The Who began a tour in Germany. They must have spent the past 50 years feeling ashamed of it they were the support group on that tour for Hermans Hermits.

match report Hua Hin City 1 – 0 Assumption Utd With only 1 defeat in the last 5 matches, expectations were very high for this game against high flying Assumption Utd, who must be a Champions League candidate elect. Such is the standard of this opposition; they are the only club to win a home tie for the 3rd game against Suphanburi – not a modest achievement. Notable absences from the Hua Hin team were Wichan, who is recovering from appendicitis, Ali G who was suspended and Ali M still recovering from injury. There was a nasty downpour just before kick-off, but conditions for this match were perfect. The crowd was still increased based on earlier in the season, but some supporters would have been deterred by the pre-match rain. The game was only a few minutes old when Wuttichai was bundled off the ball on the edge of the Assumption penalty box. He stepped up to take the resultant free kick himself. His execution of the free kick would have made David Beckham proud. This proved to be the deciding goal. Assumption were very fast on the break, but the Hua Hin defence matched them very well. It is hard to single any one defender out, but if I have to, that honour would again go to Roland, whose work rate was superb. This was a game between 2 very good footballing sides. Unusually, the referee didn’t try to take centre stage, players were not feigning injury, it was just good entertaining football from start to finish. Head Coach Sébastien Roques must take great credit for the way he has transformed the team in such a very short time. A special mention to Petprasert who was put between the sticks due to Wichan’s untimely illness, and he claimed the club’s first clean sheet of the season. An excellent game of football, and I don’t think we need fear run-away leaders Suphanburi next Saturday. I think word will soon get out that Hua Hin City are now a force to be reckoned with. After the match, supporters were treated to additional excitement. Assumption won the first match 1-0 and today’s score levelled things with a 1-1 aggregate. The venue for the 3rd game is decided by aggregate score. So it was time for a penalty shoot-out, which Hua Hin lost 6 – 7. So the final match of the season will be at Assumption. A great day, and a great result. 3 points nearer the teams above. hash house harriers

Chelsea are closing in on Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, 22, and he may sign in time to travel with his new team to China and Singapore on Monday. (Sky Sports) Or, Manchester United are set to outbid Chelsea, with the Old Trafford club prepared to pay more than £40million for the in-demand midfielder. (Daily Mail) United manager Jose Mourinho also wants the club to make a £60m bid for Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier, 23. (Mirror) United will not offer striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 35, a new contract despite allowing him to continue his recovery from knee surgery at their Carrington training base. (Star) And the club are yet to meet Inter Milan’s asking price for Croatia winger Ivan Perisic, 28, but a deal - for a fee of between £45m and £50m - is expected to be completed in the next week. (Independent) Arsenal are reportedly confident of keeping hold of midfielder Alex OxladeChamberlain. The 23-year-old has just 12 months remaining on his current contract. (Daily Mail) Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is also determined to keep forward Alexis Sanchez, 28, who is yet to sign a new deal and is thought to want a move to Manchester City. (Independent) And Wenger is refusing to sell France striker Olivier Giroud, 30, until the futures of Sanchez and Monaco’s Thomas Lemar are resolved. (Daily Telegraph) The Gunners will compete with Liverpool and Manchester City for the signing of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, 26. (Sun) Chelsea are prioritising the signing of Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, 24, as it looks increasingly unlikely Spain forward Diego Costa, 28, will stay with the Premier League champions. (Guardian) Or, Costa is reportedly ready to play for the Blues again and make peace with manager Antonio Conte. (Star) Roma are keen to sign Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, 21, on a season-long loan deal, but the Red Devils are unlikely to sanction it. (Mirror)

worth every penny Manchester Utd buy Romelu Lukaku for the price of five Romelu Lukakus

••

uk Manchester United have completed the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Premier League rivals Everton for a fee equivalent to five Romelu Lukakus. After turning down an initial bid, Everton accepted the deal when the Old Trafford club increased their offer by a further Romelu Lukaku. A Goodison Park source revealed, “Every player has their price, and in Lukaku’s case it’s about five times what he’s actually worth. “We knew that we’d get the price we wanted after Man United set the precedent by buying Paul Pogba for the price of ten Paul Pogbas.” United fans have expressed their delight at the signing and insisted that it shows the sort of ambition needed to challenge for the title. “Paying massively overinflated prices for players is a real statement of intent,” said season ticket holder Simon Williams.

Left: Lukaku with his agent before the transfer became a reality “Now we just need to go out and get a match winner who can change a game in an instant – we’ve never really replaced Howard Webb.” In related news, Lukaku’s agent Mino Raiola, has been admitted to hospital following the striker’s move. A statement from the hospital treating Raiola, said: “We can confirm that we are currently treating a man who is in a coma brought on by ferocious masturbation. “There is little we can do about the fixed grin, and despite being heavily sedated he has been mumbling ‘twenty percent, twenty percent’ over and over again since his arrival. “Surgeons have successfully removed his hand from his private parts, but we are preparing his wife for the possibility that the erection will be permanent.”
