•There • is an undoubted initial attraction to the idea of improving transport links to the Hua Hin and Cha hua hin

Am areas, and specifically the proposed expansion of the airport to allow for more international and domestic flights. This is exactly what the local division of the Thai Hotels Association have been pushing for this week, as they urged the government to speed up a revamp of the existing airport, to strengthen tourism competitiveness in the area and facilitate airlines, especially budget carriers wishing to add direct flights from major cities in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia to Hua Hin. Naturally it would be a huge boost to the area in terms of tourism, but the fear of many people is that it would change the towns so drastically that it would destroy the very appeal that people travel here for. There are particular concerns from some over an increase in the number of Chinese visitors, after a variety of newspaper stories highlighted how the behaviour of some Chinese tourists has upset local people in other parts of Thailand. The airport has been sadly underused for many years, and it clearly is a resource that should be fully utilised, but the authorities do need to ensure that any expansion does not lead to an already stretched local infrastructure collapsing, or that the town loses it’s charms for those that already visit on a regular basis; it is a tricky balancing act, and it has been a frequent concern of residents that Hua Hin and Cha Am may fall into the same trap as Pattaya did when it rapidly expanded. Perhaps a sensible approach might be to increase the numbers of domestic flights, and allow a limited number of international flights, giving the towns time to gradually adapt to more tourists while still retaining the unique aspects that make them so appealing to visitors.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. How proudly he talks This week it is....Zig-zag A series of short straight lines, set at angles to one another and Of zigzags and walks connected to form a continuous line. Often forming a regular pattern, but not necessarily so. Also, the action of moving It didn’t take long for the term to begin to be used in a figurative sense, that is, in reference to any continual changes; along such a course. This term seems to have come into English from Continental for example, in William Cowper’s Conversation, 1781: Europe - The Netherlands, France, or possibly Germany. The origin is unknown. The reduplication is suggestive of “Though such continual zig-zags in a book, Such drunken alternation, as with other phrases of that sort, e.g. tick-tock reelings, have an awkward look.” and see-saw. In 1706, the Dutch author Roelof Roukema published Naamboek der beroemde genees- en heelmeesters van alle eeuwen [Book of Medicine and Healers]. This contains the line: Is there an English phrase or saying that “eenige in de voorstad van St. Germain zig zag bewegen”

which loosely translates into English as: “some in the suburb of St. Germain move zig zag” The German word ‘zickzack’ dates from around the same time and is known (in Sperander) from 1727. That usage referred to the fortifications of castles, the walls of which were sometimes built in zig-zag form. Zic-zac/zick-zack soon began to be written as zig-zag. The first record we have of that is in Johnathan Swift’s prose poem My Lady’s Lamentation, 1728:

never can say goodbye May 26th 1973, and the Beatles compilation ‘1967 - 1970’ was at number 1 in the albums chart. Forty four years on and their Sergeant Pepper’s album is being remixed prior to it’s re-release this year, while the Rolling Stones latest album ‘Blue and Lonesome’ was out in good time for last Christmas. Both bands have had careers lasting well over fifty years, and although the remaining Beatles no longer tour (let’s face it McCartneys’ voice isn’t what it was, and Ringo’s son Zak carries on the family tradition by drumming for The Who) both are still very much in the business, despite having been on their pensions for years. If these guys had left school at 15 - the minimum age back then - and worked until 65, they would have more than done their bit. But it seems that aging rockers are now often touring and/or releasing new albums more than ever before. This year alone Deep Purple, the Pretenders, Slade, the Sweet, ELO, Blue Oyster Cult, Hawkwind, Procul Harum, Blondie and Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel are among those touring the UK. Blondie with a new album, while the remaining BeeGee Barry Gibb also has a new album. Most of these bands appeared in the early 1970’s. Some in the 60’s, none later than 1979, and there are more. Fleetwood Mac toured the UK in 2015, with Rod Stewart following in 2016, just as his knighthood was announced. Manfred Mann and it’s offshoot the Blues Band, either with or without Paul Jones, are still regulars on the road. The same can be said for Hawkwind, even though only one of the founder members - Dave Brock remains. Brock is now 76 and has seen 39 band members come

and go, but claims that he only sacked two of them, including Lemmy. Fleetwood Mac celebrate their 50th anniversary this year and have announced (another) farewell tour for 2018, together with the release of an album by Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie due out next month. A knighthood has also been awarded to Ray Davies, of the Kinks, another pensioner with a new album in the works. So what drives these musicians to just keep on going, sometimes to rock until they drop? After all they can’t all need the money, and yet Bowie was completing his final album almost literally on his death bed, while Status Quo’s Rick Parfitt didn’t seem to take health warnings seriously enough and paid the price. Back when they all began their music was revolutionary. Seen by most people as a flash in the pan that would never last, apart from maybe Elvis and Cliff who were primarily solo artists, and of course we were used to those becoming famous and staying the course. Like Sinatra and Vera Lynne. But those new noisy bands would soon fade away, and their members certainly didn’t expect to ever see the inside of Buckingham Palace. Some were much more likely to see the inside of a police cell in those early days. Perhaps Christine McVie summed it up in her recent announcement about the ‘farewell’ of Fleetwood Mac - that the band have always felt drawn back together by an invisible umbilical cord. But let’s not forget the influence of radio. In the early 60’s broadcasting of all that new pop stuff was strictly rationed by the BBC, and the only alternative was the rather crackly Radio Luxembourg. Then, seeing a gap in the market, pirate radio stations stepped in. One of them, Radio Caroline, began broadcasting in 1964, but in 1967 was declared illegal. Caroline refused to give in, and later operated via the internet and digital radio stations until finally, last week, it was granted a licence to make terrestrial broadcasts to Suffolk and parts of Essex. Our Poet Laureate Bob Dylan was right. The times have certainly a’changed.

classifieds awol classifieds have changed!

After an extensive review of our Classified advertising pricing and display, we have changed our pricing and display, with effect from 19th May. Below you will find all the details of how to place a classified advert with us, and how much it will cost. Please note that we are no longer offering free classified adverts; however, we are reducing the cost of our former ‘Premium’ adverts considerably, and applying these prices across the board. We are also introducing ‘Featured’ ads, which have extra prominence with a box around them and the option of shading behind the text.

Extra Subscription allowing up to 36 Single ads for 13 issues each. 2700 baht This remains largely unchanged from before; the options 4. Extra Plus Subscription allowing up to 72 Single ads of are outlined in the shaded box below. 13 issues each. 3600 baht Adverts of longer than 25 words will either require purchasing further Single ads in the case of option 1, or using more of the ads in the subscription pack. The same applies to wishing to run an advert for longer than 13 weeks/issues, and this is where the subscription packs work out as great value, as the Basic pack would allow for three ads to run for one year, or six ads to run for six months, for example. A further note on the subscription packs is that AWOL has no objection to businesses or people joining together to use a single pack between them, similar to the AWOL Bazaar.

Match Report: Hua Hin City 2 – 1 Pathum Thani We were without Ali G and Pongpat at the start – two very influential players this season. Relegation battles are never pretty to watch, and this was no exception. However, Hua Hin dug deep, and took away 3 valuable points from this relegation struggle. We are now just over a week away from the opening of the transfer window, where we hope to make a significant impact. We might not make a Champions League place, but we certainly hope to be at the right end of the table, The first 15 minutes was a game with goalless draw written all over it. Eventually, Hua Hin took command, and Jirasuk sealed with a wonder goal. We’ll never know if it was an intended shot, and should be a contender for goal of the season, or whether it was a badly hit cross. We know what Jirasuk will claim though. At the end of the day, who cares? We’ve had our share of bad luck/referees this season. If lady luck has decided to give us a cheeky smile, let’s accept it with open arms. Pathum Thani did not even threaten Wichan’s goal in the first half. All of the chances fell to Hua Hin. Pathum Thani came out after the break determined to make a game of it until Ali G made an appearance in about the 60th minute. He made many menacing runs, and was eventually rewarded with a headed goal. At 2 goals down, Pathum Thani were gifted a very soft goal from nothing. There was no danger, but the Hua Hin team, including Wichan seemed to step aside to give the visitors a free shot on goal, which they gratefully accepted. Game on. The visitors could smell their 2nd point of the season, and went for broke. However, they left themselves wide open at the back. Unfortunately, Hua Hin missed chance after chance on the counter attack because they suddenly thought they were better than a team rooted at the bottom of t4. Instead of scoring the simple tap in, they went for the spectacular, which they weren’t good enough to execute – very disappointing. We were pleased to hear that final whistle, and secure 3 points. For probably the first time this season, a decent sized crowd gathered in or close to Zone C to clap the players off. Today was such a happy occasion – hopefully this marks a return to the good old days.

Featured Game

Saturday 27th May 2017 THE FA CUP - FINAL Arsenal v Chelsea 23:30 Will this be Arsene Wenger’s last hurrah? Or will it be an embarrassing confirmation of how far his Arsenal side are behind the champions Chelsea? Given the eventual 18 point gap between them, we suspect it will be the latter, despite the best efforts of Alexis Sanchez, and we can see this as a cruise to the double for the Blues. Arsenal are shorn of Koscielny in defence, which will prove crucial we think, and Petr Cech could be in for a busy afternoon. Chelsea are simply stronger all over the park, and whether Wenger remains in charge or not, Arsenal desperately need significant signings in the summer if they are to challenge the top four again, something that will not be easy as they are not in the Champions League, and will have to suffer Thurday night games.

John Terry’s Chelsea farewell ‘a bit over the top’, says North Korea

uk JOHN Terry’s Chelsea farewell was a bit too much pomp and ceremony, according to North Korea. After watching Terry’s 26th-minute substitution and subsequent guard of honour, North Korea’s president Kim Jong Un declared it all a bit excessive. The dictator said: “Everyone should give themselves a pat on the back every now and again but you’ve got to draw the line somewhere. “That guy’s ego is way out of control, and the people around him obviously feel pressured into kissing his arse. “It’s a reminder that sometimes we all need to show a bit of humility.” Others who found Terry’s exit a bit grandiose include Apollo Creed from Rocky, stadium rock band Motley Crue and rapper Kanye West. West said: “It’s not like he’s the greatest rapper in the history of the world. He’s

not even the best centre half of the last 10 years, quite frankly. “That guy seems a bit cocky to me, and bear in mind I say that as Kanye West.” US President Donald Trump also threw his hat into the ring by stating, ”That Terry guy is quite incredible. Incredible.
