healthy labelling appearing, sugar tax to follow

•A •scheme to encourage Thailand’s citizens to make more educated choices when thailand

purchasing food and drink launched around a year ago is finally starting to be seen in the shops. The Healthier Choices initiative sees a series of six different labels, similar to that shown right, being given to foods and drinks and denotes acceptable amounts of sugar, sodium and fat; it is granted for use on products by a joint committee drawn from the FDA, the Institute of Nutrition and the industry. The six types of labels apply to frozen meals, beverages, seasonings, dairy products, instant foods and snacks. The sugar content of drinks is a particular problem area, and the seal is only granted to beverages that have a maximum of 6 grams of sugar per 100 ml; however, additional sugar substitutes, such as aspartame or saccharin are allowed, which are widely reported to cause other health issues. The five other labels address fat and sodium consumption - for example, fish sauce must have six grams or less of sodium, while soy sauce and other seasonings must have less than five grams of sodium per 100 ml. Instant noodles and congee must have only a gram of sodium or less per 50 grams. Healthier Choice snacks must have less than 6 grams of saturated fat and 0.5 grams of sodium per 100 grams of say, chips. A sugar tax will be introduced next year in conjunction with the initiative, delayed to allow companies to adjust their products should they wish; drinks with more than six to ten grams of sugar will be taxed by 20 percent, and those with over 10 grams of sugar will be taxed 25 percent.

Run of the mill is a little earlier than those and is American in origin. The mill in question was a weaving mill and the articles first called ‘run of the mill’ were clothes. nicola sturgeon Nicola Sturgeon is touring Perthshire in the First Minister’s chauffeur driven car. Suddenly a cow jumps out into the road. They hit it full on and the car comes to a stop. Nicola in her usual jaunty manner, says to the chauffeur : “ You get out and check - you were driving.” The chauffeur gets out, checks and reports that the animal is dead. “ You were driving, go and tell the farmer,” says Nicola, ”I can’t afford to be blamed for anything.” The chauffeur walks up the drive to the farmhouse and returns five hours later totally plastered, his hair ruffled and with a big grin on his face. “ My God, what happened to you ?” asks Nicola. The chauffeur replies : “ When I got there, the farmer opened his best bottle of malt whisky, the wife gave me a slap - up meal and the daughter made love to me.” “ What on earth did you say?” asks Nicola. “ I knocked on the door and when it was answered, I said to them, I’m Nicola Sturgeon’s chauffeur and I’ve just killed the cow.”

to a friend called Karen Tidd – and it only cost them six and a half pence. But on closer inspection Stewart was stunned to find it marked with the date August 5, 1976. ‘We do sometimes get the wrong post delivered here but this was something else. It’s like it was lost in a time warp,’ said the 67-year-old. The photo depicts Branksome Chine beach in Poole and on the back the women, named Linda and Janette, write about having a ‘lovely time’. They also describe meeting ‘two lads from Malta’ at a disco and complain about their lack of a suntan. Stewart, who has lived with his wife in Mickle Trafford, Cheshire for almost four years, said he had never heard of the women or the intended recipient, Karen Tidd. But a quick check of the deeds to the property revealed a family with the surname Tidd lived at the home from the 1960s. He said their ‘postcard from the past’ had quickly become a talking point among family, friends and neighbours since it was delivered last month. ‘I thought something was a bit odd when I looked at the card and spotted the cars as they looked a bit ancient,’ added the grandfather. ‘Then I turned it over and saw the date and I couldn’t believe it. It must just have been lying dormant Uk somewhere until someone posted it. It’s all very strange.’ Man receives postcard in the mail 40 years after it was sent Julie Pirone, spokesman for Royal Mail, said the card would A man received a mysterious postcard that had been ‘lost in a have been delivered to the address as soon as it entered the time warp’ after it took more than 40 years to be delivered. postal system – even though it had a 40-year-old stamp on it. Known as the ‘penis seat’, the plastic is moulded into a man’s chest and groin area, complete with belly button, nipples and flaccid penis. Video from the public transport shows people sitting down without looking first, only to leap up again when they felt something unexpected between their legs. It is reserved for men only, leading some to claim the move is sexist. However, it was actually put there as part of a campaign against sexual harassment. Mexico City Metro went viral with their stunt, which is meant to illustrate that people have a right to go about their journey without being confronted by sexual comments or people trying to grope them. Men who sit down on the seat immediately feel uncomfortable. But a sign next to it reads: ‘It’s uncomfortable to sit here but it doesn’t compare with the sexual violence that women suffer in their everyday lives.’ The video above ends with the statistic: ‘9 out of 10 women in Mexico City have been victims of some form of sexual violence.’

do it clean I don’t go out of my way to watch the antics of Red Nose Day on TV. That annual fund raising marathon in support of Children in Need does a great job raising millions of much needed cash, it just isn’t my idea of a fun filled night of TV, especially since the demise of Terry Wogan, who had a knack of making everything go with a swing. Even Eurovision bless him. But I do usually tune in towards the end to see how much has been raised. Until a week ago that is, when the programme hit rock bottom after the witching hour with a couple of dubious comedy acts. Of course everyone has their own idea about what is funny, but we generally accept that a certain amount of swearing, innuendo and gesturing has been a part of our British style comedy for years. So a female comedian whose dialogue included f*** as every other word, and a male in snug tights and underpants relentlessly wobbling his bits around shouldn’t come as a surprise. Especially when shown well after the watershed. It’s just that Children in Need didn’t seem to be the right programme for them. Have all you expats tried the HuaHin/Pattaya ferry yet? If not maybe it’s time to hop on board, bridge that gulf, and see for yourselves how things are progressing with the great Pattaya cleanup. Despite all the talk they do seem to be trying hard, if last weeks arrest of 14 ‘high profile foreign mafia figures’ is anything to go by. In true Thai tradition four of the foreign mafia figures were pictured being questioned by police, which is where things got interesting. Either Pattayas’ pollution levels have risen considerably (maybe caused by surplus sewage) or someone in

the police station was eating durian, because the suspects were all wearing smog masks. Another clean up is now happening in Bangkoks’ Hua Lamphong railway station, which has apparently been plagued by night time homeless squatters. To combat this the station is now closed between 11.30 pm and 3.00 am, which unsurprisingly is causing some inconvenience to genuine rail users. Those needing to catch trains which depart before dawn are having to present their ID at a desk outside, then wait on the pavement for the station to open. It is easy to see where this is going. The passengers waiting on the pavements will be tripping over the homeless forced to sleep on them, while the 11.30 pm station closing time will have to be flexible enough to cope with those trains which arrive late. It will all end in tears. Seriously though homelessness in developing towns and cities is becoming a problem everywhere. More people need homes, while there are too many who can’t afford them. One homeless charity in Manchester will lose it’s city centre base in June, when the building will be taken over by a property developer who is thought to have plans for luxury apartments on the site. Similar issues are developing in Hull, where the city centre smartening up doesn’t blend well with increasing numbers of homeless people, yet no solutions seem to be in sight.

On This Day

On March 31st 1880 the town of Wabash, Indiana, claimed to be the first in the world to be completely illuminated by electric light. The claim was later debunked when evidence was found that only the Court House was lit, which would make more sense. The first reliable incandescent light bulb hadn’t been produced (by Thomas Edison) until 1878, and it was a few more years before Edison was also responsible for inventing the first electricity utility system. An early example of fake news?

Nicola Sturgeon refuses to accept result of England vs Scotland six nations match; demands replay

uk Nicola Sturgeon believes the result of the England vs Scotland Six Nations rugby match was ‘wrong’ and will fight for it to be overturned. The 61-21 defeat was the wrong result for Scotland, she said, and pledged to do everything in her power to reverse the scoreline no matter how long it takes. Reports indicate she has already made a succession of calls to Senior Six Nations and World Rugby officials to seek their support in changing the outcome. If she cannot get the result changed by conventional methods, Sturgeon confirmed she has not taken demanding a replay off the table. “I don’t believe this result is in the best interest of Scotland, or of rugby, and it is clear that changing it would be entirely fair,” she told reporters at Holyrood. “The Six Nations’ position that the result is binding just because we lost is short-

termist and doesn’t serve the Scottish people in the way they deserve.” Sturgeon went on to say she believed England had stolen literally dozens of points that were rightfully Scottish, and she would organise a wide-ranging consultation and enquiry to examine all

aspects of the result and report on how it can best be changed in Scotland’s favour. Meanwhile, it is rumoured that the First Minister has made contingency plans to have a vote in the Scottish Parliament should Scotland also lose to England in their World Cup qualifier in June.
