ROUND UP

SOME NEWS SNIPPETS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED

•Aside • from a Thai man running around Hua Hin railway station brandishing a knife because he wasn’t HUA HIN

allowed on a train, there hasn’t really been any major news this week (and no one was hurt). So our front page has a collection of news snippets that you may have missed and we think are worth knowing about. • A new minibus station is under construction in soi 51, which is believed to become the central point for all minibus services from Hua Hin, although it is not yet clear whether other current pick up points, such as at the clock tower, will continue to operate, or when it will open. • A new law comes into effect on 1st April requiring all passengers in a car to wear seat belts; previously only passengers (and driver) in the front seats had to. • Most readers will be aware of the new roundabout that has been constructed on the west side of the railway crossing at soi 88, and we would advise extreme caution when using it, as Thais are not at all familiar with how these are supposed to operate, even though it is clearly stated in the relevant section of the Thai Highway Code that at a roundabout traffic must give way to vehicles coming from the right. Do not assume that this will be the case! • A meeting was held earlier this month between the National Legislature Council of Thailand and Thailand Senate, and the Mayor of Hua Hin, to address the infrastructure problems the city has been facing for some time, notably garbage, traffic and water supply. Projects to improve these are already underway, with some (a new pumping station, and the canal road improvements) due to be completed by September this year.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. So, we now arrive at a part of a dwelling house being called a THIS WEEK IT IS....GIVE NO QUARTER Show no mercy or concession; in its original usage, show no quarter, or quarters. That’s the first route done with and the notion of captured combatants being granted life and given mercy for a vanquished opponent. ‘Quarter’ has long been used to mean ‘exemption from being somewhere to stay, that is, quartered’, as opposed to ‘given no immediately put to death granted to a vanquished opponent quarter’, that is, killed, is a plausible one. by the victor in a battle or fight’. That is exemplified in the The second route is straightforward in that ‘quarter’ was also definition in Randle Cotgrave’s A dictionarie of the French and used to mean ‘good relations with or fair treatment of ’. This usage dates from around the same time as Cotgrave’s ‘ransomed English tongues, 1611: from battle’ definition and could equally be the source of the Quartier - quarter, or faire war, wherein souldiers are taken meaning of ‘give no quarter’; for example, Ralphe Hamor’s A True Discourse of the Present Estate of Virginia, 1614: prisoners and ransomed at a certaine rate. To ‘give no quarter’ derives from this wasn’t a phrase welcome to the ears of anyone captured as, ‘no quarter given’ was effectively a death sentence. Clearly, the derivation of the phrase depends entirely on the derivation of ‘quarter’. Regrettably, this is rather tortuous and, it must be admitted, littered with leaps of the imagination what the less charitable might call guesses. Nevertheless, lets have a stab. The word quarter could have arrived as part of this idiom by one of two routes. The first route is the longest, so we’ll go that way first. The oldest usage of ‘quarter’ in English is that of our most commonly used present day meaning, that is, a fourth part of something. This usage began in the 13th century as a measure of quantity - being the fourth part of some other measure, for example, eight bushels made one quarter and four quarters made one chaldron (cauldron). By the 14th century, ‘quarter’ was also beginning to be used as a verb; for example, Robert Manning of Brunne’s Langtoft’s Chronicle, circa 1338, described some poor victim who was unfortunate enough to be hanged, drawn and quartered: His hede yei of smyten, to London was it born; ye dede body ye britten [cut into pieces] on four quarters torn. Approximately, another century on and the sky and space was notionally split into four divisions called quarters. An example of that comes in Geoffrey Chaucer’s A treatise on the Astrolabe, circa 1391: The foure principales plages or quarters of the firmament. This led on to the four points of the compass being called quarters and, subsequently, districts of a town or city being called quarters. Tyndale’s Bible, 1526, records this usage, in Luke XIV 21: Goo out quickly into the stretes and quarters of the citie. Of course, we still retain that usage and most large cities have a Latin quarter, a Chinese quarter etc. Along with that gradual modification of meaning there was a parallel development on a domestic scale and a part of a house also became called a quarter. The Paston Letters, 1448 records this: They han made wyketis [small doors] on euery quarter of ye hwse.

[The Indians] would without delay dispatch messengers to [their King], to know his purpose and pleasure, desiring faire quarter some 24 howers. So, after all of the above, we have two quite plausible derivations of the ‘quarter’ in ‘give no quarter’. It may well be that, at this remove, it can’t be narrowed down any further than that.

UKRAINE Dad ‘does school run in helicopter after his son was late to class’ If you ever turned up to school red faced and gasping after having to run the last mile up the hill, look away now. Because for some people, when they sleep in, they get taken to school in a helicopter. That’s apparently what happened to this kid in Ukraine, who was filmed running out of a car park and into lessons with his shirt untucked. The Robinson R22 Beta landed outside the school in the elite Lipky district of Kiev, the capital. Passersby filming it land (because you don’t usually see a chopper land at the school gates) were amazed to see the boy leap out. Frankly, it beats getting a backy on your big brother’s bike, or a lift with Dave’s mum. The boy is reportedly the son of Andrey Palchevskii, a former Deputy Minister of Sports for Ukraine. Mr Palchevskii has not so far commented on the incident but it has sparked debate on social media. Some criticised the father for spoiling his son by taking him to school by helicopter. ‘Anna Melenchuk’ said: ‘All we can hope is that such people get a proper judgement one day. Only this way will humanity have a shot of getting stabilised again.’ But ‘Artyon Ulibin’ argued: ‘Don’t be jealous. Why would you bother with that? It is great when people are able to afford such things.’ And some people suggested the footage of the helicopter could

UK Driver ends up with fines worth more than the car they’ve been put on A driver has been given 26 parking tickets after leaving their car in the same spot for six months. The fines, worth £100 each, are now worth considerably more than the 16-year-old Hyundai Coupe. The car has been sat in a car park in Kings Heath, Birmingham for six months – with the owner nowhere to be seen. A Y-Reg Hyundai Coupe could be valued at around £150 making the fines attached a staggering 17 times more valuable than the vehicle itself. Saj, a shop worker from Grey Haze, a vape shop located in the car park spoke about the vehicle. He said: ‘It’s been there for about six months, I’ve no idea who’s it is. Whoever’s it is, it doesn’t look like they’re coming back to get it.’ This isn’t the first time a car has been left unloved in a Birmingham car park. In November 2014 a Mercedes S-Class was left abandoned and the car park was trying to trace the owner and demand a bill of £14,235.

YOU NEVER CAN TELL Chuck Berry was one of the very first artists to be entered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A week ago, at the age of 90, he became the latest legend to enter that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the sky. Hailed as the first guitar playing rock star, Chuck Berry was a major influence on other artists, including Alice Cooper, who in 2001 was quoted as saying ‘as a lyricist Chuck Berry still reigns supreme, my major influence’. Well over 100 cover versions of Berrys’ hit Johnny B Goode alone have been released over the years, by everyone from John Denver to the Sex Pistols, with Elvis, Cliff, Elton and Meatloaf inbetween. And of course the Beatles famously released their own version of Roll Over Beethoven in 1968. When the news broke in the UK last Saturday night one BBC radio presenter referred to Chuck Berry as ‘a naughty boy’, but he served his time, and certainly wasn’t the only one in the world of Rock who fufilled that criteria. For most of us who grew up with early rock it was almost mandatory for our idols to be mad, bad and mean, and wear very tight leathers. So what on earth has gone wrong? By comparison new kid on the block Ed Sheeran, along with others of his age group and genre, seems to be squeaky clean, while breaking all chart records earlier this month by bagging 9 of the Top Ten chart places. That’s progress I guess. Progress is also being made by Thailands’ Finest with their plan to equip police with push bikes, and to fit them with helmet cameras to help gather evidence. These ‘policemen of

ADVERTISE HERE FOR JUST 360 BAHT PER WEEK (when booked for 13 issues)

tomorrow’ will also wear helmet cams while patrolling on their Segways and motocycs. This sounds like a seriously good idea which could easily be adopted by British police. We are always moaning over here because we see very few police patrolling our streets. Those we do see can’t run fast enough to catch a cold, let alone a bike thief or mugger of grannies, while our motorbike cops are usually used just as police escorts. So please Mrs May, us Hull folk really don’t care what happens to Scotland, but please give our finest Segways. We know they are a bit slow, but they are just what we need to patrol our shiny new City of Culture paved streets. Before we get to this weeks’ anniversary, a quick look at VIP Poo, particulates, and ‘repartory’. Starting with VIP Poo, a new toilet scenting product launched by one of the UKs’ cheesiest TV ads ever, featuring a very posh gold toilet and the tag line ‘Even a VIP needs to VI Poo’. (And you thought Thai TV was bad?) Next the word ‘particulates’, which seems to be the new - longer - way to describe particles, and can only serve to confuse predictive texters even more. And last but not least ‘repartory’, which is simply American for ‘repertoire’, and really doesn’t sound right, because it isn’t.

On This Day

Easter arrives late this year, but 50 years ago Easter Sunday fell on March 26th. That was the day on which the American businessman Jim Thompson, dubbed the Thai Silk King, disappeared while on holiday in Malaysias’ Cameron Highlands, launching the largest search ever in the region. 50 years on much has been written about the mystery and his fate, and we aren’t much wiser. But one book by Joshua Kurlantzick, ‘The Ideal Man’, digs deep into the politics of Thailand at the time, it’s relationship with the US, links with both to the Vietnam War, and not least the possibility of Jim Thompsons’ involvement in it all. It is well worth a read.

SATURDAY 25TH MARCH 2017 FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFYING - EUROPEAN REGION GROUP D Republic of Ireland v Wales 02:45 The Republic have a few injury concerns ahead of this one, while Wales were expecting to be missing Gareth Bale, but he is now available, and this could swing the balance in this tie. The home side are top of the group and unbeaten, with three wins and a draw so far, and so are their opponents, but their haul is a win and three draws, leaving them four points adrift, so a win for Wales is much needed. These ‘local derby’ international games are always hard to pick, as the form book is often thrown out of the window, but we think this is going to be very tight and end in a score draw.

Monumental tool Piers Morgan is an outspoken critic of Wenger, but the 67-year-old Frenchman insists Morgan’s unhappiness gives him the strength to carry on. Following his comments after the defeat to West Bromwich Albion which had some sections of the Arsenal support calling for him to go, Wenger finally outlined his thoughts this week. “I’d have quit years ago if it wasn’t for Piers Morgan,” he revealed. “Contributing to the continued unhappiness of such a gargantuan knobhead is my finest footballing achievement.” Piers Morgan reacted to the news by insisting that Arsene Wenger isn’t the
