NEW NORMAL? UNUSUAL WEATHER STRIKES AGAIN

•With • eighteen days gone in January, while Hua Hin has been largely spared the devastation that flooding HUA HIN

has caused further south, long term residents have been left scratching their heads at the amount of rain that has fallen on the area, in what is traditionally the driest month of the year. Hua Hin averages just 10 millimetres of rain normally this month, and to date has already received nearly seven times that amount, with around 67 millimetres having fallen, with about two thirds of that falling in just one 24 hour period (9th and 10th January). However figures from last year suggest that a ‘new normal’ may be emerging, because in January 2016 a total of 116 millimetres rain fell, with the majority of that coming in just three days, 7th to 9th January. In 2015, and for at least ten years preceding that, this figure was at most around 3 millimetres and in several years zero. While this potential new weather pattern could upset tourism somewhat, it is certainly needed in terms of the water supply, and hopefully the dams and reservoirs are now full, and able to cope with demand, something that certain areas of the town are well aware has not been the case historically - it will be hard for the water authority to now claim that there is not enough water! The weather forecast for the rest of January suggests that there will not be any more rain except possibly the odd localised shower, and it is likely that we are now settling in to the long dry period that usually runs until around April. We publish the forecast for the next seven days every week on page 4 of the paper, along with what the weather has been like in the rest of Thailand and around the world. The tourists and the industry that serves them will certainly be hoping that is the end of the rain, and so will the AWOL delivery boys!

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. THIS WEEK IT IS.....HOUSEHOLD WORDS Words or sayings that are in common use; names that are And take pertenaunce of houshold and substaunce. familiar to everyone. Who coined the term ‘household words’? USA First species officially named after Donald Trump A new species has been named after Donald Trump. In an unexpected addition to his legacy, the billionaire soon-tobe president has given his name to a moth. The newly discovered insect, now known as Neopalpa donaldtrumpi, looks strikingly similar to the politician, with its bright blonde crown of ‘hair’ and beady eyes. Its habitat is Southern California in the US and Baja California in Mexico – whereas the real Donald Trump prefers to reside in New York, although he will soon be relocated to the White House. Evolutionary biologist Dr Vazrick Nazari described his discovery in the latest edition of the open access journal Zookeys, and came up with the name, hoping that it could attract publicity to the moth, which is an endangered species. There is a critical need for further conservation efforts for fragile areas that make up its habitat, he said. He discovered the moth while examining specimens at the Bohart Museum of Entomology, University of California. When he saw this one, he realised it didn’t match any previously know species. It has now been recognised as the second species of a genus of twirler moths. You can recognise it by the yellowishwhite scales present on the head in adults.

VENEZUELA Woman ‘tried to smuggle boyfriend out of prison in suitcase’ As far as genius ideas behind prison breaks go, this supposed one from Venezuela has top marks for audacity. According to reports, a woman has been arrested after attempting to break her boyfriend out of prison by stuffing him in a pink suitcase and walking away. Antonieta Robles Saouda, 25, has been arrested after the attempt to break Ibrain Jose Vargas Garcia free from Jose Antonio Anzoategui prison in Venezuela, reports El Universal. The 25-year-old had visited the prison with a six-year-old, thought to be her daughter, in late December but was stopped by security when leaving after struggling to wheel the bag away. Inside they found her partner who had contorted his body to fit in the suitcase. The inmate, who was serving a nine year eight month sentence for vehicle theft, was returned to prison while his girlfriend was arrested. The Council for the Protection of Children and Adolescents will take care of the child in the meantime.

USA Woman is so allergic to her husband they can’t even sit in the same room Johanna Watkins doesn’t know if she will ever be able to hold her husband’s hand again. The 29-year-old suffers from a condition that is so severe even being in the same room as Scott triggers an allergic reaction. It means she can’t kiss him or do anything that normal couples are able to do. A normal date night involves sitting in separate rooms, three floors apart, watching the same TV show and messaging about it. But life wasn’t always like this for the couple. Before they married in 2013 they would go hiking together and even though Johanna struggled with rashes, irritable bowel syndrome and migraines, it wasn’t until later that the symptoms got so serve. Scott said there were times, before his wife was diagnosed, that she would cough if they were face-toface. However, it was only last year, when the symptoms grew worse, that they realised they couldn’t share their physical life together. ‘It was this horrible reality that it wasn’t going to work,’ she told the BBC. . ‘I was now reacting strongly to my husband. Before this I had reacted to my parents, to many, many other people, but it was horrific when it became Scott.’ Johanna suffers from Mas Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) – a rare immune system disorder which means she is allergic to almost everything. She lives in a sealed room in a friend’s house, while hers is being renovated, with sealed windows, doors and a filter to purify the air. Typical treatments don’t work for her, meaning her life is on hold until a solution can be found; but despite the challenges, the couple have remained committed to each other. Scott, who is a full-time teacher, cooks his wife dinner every night making one of the two meals – beef stew and organic lamb – she is allowed to eat. ‘There’s not an easy way around this problem. I want to keep Johanna safe and me going to see her compromises her safety,’ Scott added. ‘One of the ways I can take care of her now is by not going to see her. I’m not going to endanger her life. ‘We’re absolutely committed to one another and we’re going to wait as long as it takes to see if there is some kind of healing.’ Johanna’s condition does not just extend to her relationship, she has had a severe reaction to someone smoking down the road, or pizza being cooked a mile away. It means she has only left her current room to go to hospital or see her doctor.

SEX A sweet little girl runs out to the backyard where her father is working, and asks him, “Daddy, what’s sex?” So, her father sits her down, and tells her all about the birds and the bees. He tells her about conception, sexual intercourse, sperm and eggs etc. He tells her about puberty, menstruation, men and women and love...... He thinks what the hell, and tells her the works, thinking that to tell it all is the only way to tell truth. The girl is somewhat awe struck with this sudden influx of bizarre new knowledge, and her father finally asks, “So why did you wish to know about sex?” “Oh, mommy said lunch would be ready in a couple of secs...”

FACTORY A guy is going on a tour of a factory that produces various latex products. At the first stop, he is shown the machine that manufactures baby-bottle nipples. The machine makes a loud “hiss-pop” noise. “The hiss is the rubber being injected into the mold,” explains the guide. “The popping sound is the needle poking a hole in the end of the nipple.” Later, the tour reaches the part of the factory where condoms are manufactured. The machine makes a “Hiss. Hiss. Hiss. Hiss-pop” noise. “Wait a minute!” says the man taking the tour. “I understand what the ‘hiss, hiss,’ is, but what’s that ‘pop’ every so often?” “Oh, it’s just the same as in the baby-bottle nipple machine,” says the guide. “It pokes a hole in every fourth condom.” “Well, that can’t be good for the condoms!” “Yeah, but it’s great for the baby-bottle nipple business!”

LIFE ON MARS

••

KEEPING UP APPEARANCES For a considerable number of years, the preferred method for people living in Hua Hin to get to and from Bangkok has been the ubiquitous minibus (or minivan to some). Experiences on these buses can vary wildly, from the journey being completed smoothly with no fuss, to a white knuckle ride where the passengers are in fear of the reckless driver. This applies in particular to the regular scheduled services that used to go to Victory Monument in Bangkok, but were forced to relocate the drop off point. Even with the potentially scary ride, and a less convenient drop off, these vehicles are still the go to method for the majority of local rsidents, and this applies equally to other parts of the nation. However, as a consequence of the number of accidents they are involved in, in recent weeks the government has been making all sorts of noises about dealing with the problem, from phasing out the vehicles completely, to be replaced by newer and supposedly safer models, to the initiative announced this week of a twenty point checklist that all inter provincial minibuses must pass. The list includes roadworthiness checks including brakes, tires, wheels, seat belts, doors, fire extinguishers and escape hammers. While the checklist is nominally a good idea, the initiative fails to make it clear who will be enforcing it and what the penalty will be for failing any of the items on the list, such as impounding the vehicle, fines etc. The initiative does include a somewhat vague mention of ensuring that drivers do not exceed 8 hours working, and seems to imply that this will be done via a mandatory fitting of a GPS tracking device that links

back to the Land Department HQ on every minibus, which must be done by the end of March. However, as most observers and users of the minibus services agree, the problem is not generally the vehicles but the people behind the steering wheel, who do often drive dangerously, and normally because their schedule is so tight, and a desire to make the most money they can in the hours available. During the annoucement of the measures, after a top level meeting of army, police and other officials, Chertchai Sanansrisakorn of the land transport department said that the authorities were getting “strict, serious and sure” in the matter of minivans. However other commentators have said that, as with many Thai government initiatives, this is more about the appearance of doing something than actually solving the problem, and much of the checklist is already mandated under Thai law when the vehicles have to undergo their annual MOT test. The longer one stays in Thailand, the more that you come across this essentially face-saving exercise, and not just from the authorities, although they are the main culprits. Appearances matter in Thailand, and woe betide anyone who removes the mask.

TOP TRUMPS It won’t have escaped your attention that this weeks edition of AWOL coincides with the inauguration of Donald Trump as US President. Prior to 1937 inaugurations were held in March. The change to January was brought about by several factors, one being that in the early days election results took much longer to determine, due to the time needed to gather in votes by horse drawn carriages. As travel improved there came the problem of that a 4 month wait between Presidents provided protesters with enough time to whip up revolutionary support, and things finally came to a head during the Great Depression of 1932/3, when no-one in charge had the authority needed to take effective action. Shortening the period between voting and inauguration from 4 to 2 months was, by then, a more practical option, and certainly a more sensible one. During the 80 years since the change to January 20th some especially notable Presidents have taken the oath of office. From Franklin D Roosevelt, who became the only President to be elected for a fourth term in 1945, through John F Kennedy in 1961 and Ronald Reagan in 1981, to Barack Obama in 2009 and 2013. But Trump will surely go down in history as the first President of the United States to take the oath without having any background in politics. A small point which his supporters seem to find a refreshing change. Why not elect a business man to run the business which also happens be a country? and who knows - they may be proved right. After all our own UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn isn’t doing too well even with his years as a political activist. Nor did Milliband, who had cut his teeth on the Labour Party Manifesto rather than the usual Farleys rusk. What is worrying about the leader of the US though is the huge responsibility and power which that office carries, and to many onlookers Trump seems to relish the power without recognising the need for diplomacy. Time will tell. Meanwhile will someone please just block his Twitter account? Last week I mentioned that a new artwork had appeared in the centre of Hull, in the form of a wind turbine blade. Over here it has caused even more debate than Trump, along the lines of the ‘is it art’ kind of thing. So a visit was needed to view it in person, which is where I had one of those ‘you know you’ve been in Thailand too long when....’ moments. Because when approached from a side road the section of the thing in view

looked, at first glance, for all the world like a bit of Skytrain. If it hadn’t been for a biting wind I could have been looking down Soi 11 towards Sukhumvit Road. Well - for a split second anyway. On closer inspection Skytrain cement became the perfectly smooth flowing lines of the blade, which seems to reflect a soft glow. It does look quite arty, and is certainly drawing the crowds. Talking about that ‘you know you’ve been in Thailand too long’ feeling, I wonder how long the farang driver who hit another car last week, while under the influence, has been living in the Land of Smiles? Certainly long enough to get the hang of fleeing the scene!

On This Day

Given that this week’s column has been largely about the tranfer of power from one leader to another, an event of similar significance occurred in 1936, as King Edward VIII became King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India, until he abdicated on 11th December that same year, to avoid a constitutional crisis that would have been caused by his desire to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. After his abdication, he was created Duke of Windsor. He married Wallis in France on 3 June 1937, after her second divorce became final. They lived out the rest of their lives together, until he died in 1972, with the Duchess becoming increasingly frail and suffering from dementia following her true love fourteen years later.

SUNDAY 22ND JANUARY 2017 PREMIER LEAGUE Manchester City v Spurs 00:30 City have gone off the rails, but a win here would have them right back in contention.Spurs will be hoping to deal a knockout blow to a top four rival while hoping that Hull can upset Chelsea. However we think this is likely to be a draw, with both teams dropping a place or two consequently.

HEART AND SOUL FOOTBALLERS WHO ‘PUT IN A SHIFT’ TO BE REWARDED

••

UK Stakhanovite football players who regularly ‘put in a shift’ during games will see their endeavours rewarded under new irregular working payment laws which came into force today. The new ruling will see hard-working pros, typically found in defensive-midfield roles, who run about a lot but don’t touch the ball very often, receive a shift-working premium. In a ruling brokered by Robbie Savage, who has highlighted the plight of these lynchpins of the sport after every game since 2008, the shift premium payment will initially benefit only a handful of players, notably James Milner and Michael Carrick. However, back-dated payments could also be made to Stephen Gerrard, Paul Ince and thousands of lesser known players who have put in a shift for their clubs over the course of many seasons. The payment will be set at 110% of their usual wage, to reflect the weekly effort

they each put in on the pitch. According to club accountants, it will be paid into the players’ bank accounts immediately after the full 90 minutes at the end of the day. The new laws come just weeks after Chris Waddle won a mass action for the same players, arguing that they should be able to claim tax relief on their ‘good engine’, as this is essential to their particular set of work duties. Waddle is also calling for better protective clothing for these

players who regularly wear their hearts on their sleeve. Calls are now being made to pay extra to players who put their bodies on the line week in week out, as soon as someone has established what and where the line is. No managers were available for comment today as many were in court themselves fighting for an increase in pay, after being expected to park the bus during away games in addition to their regular duties.
