ROAD DEATHS AND INJURIES CONTINUE TO RISE IN THAILAND

•The• national and local media in Thailand at this time of year is always awash with the news about the HUA HIN

number of deaths and injuries occurring in road accidents during the ‘seven deadly days’. And indeed, here at AWOL, we frequently report on foreigners who have died on the road, and try to stress to you, our readers, the dangers that await all of us on the highways and byways here. However, the focus on the holiday periods of New Year and the Thai New Year of Songkran, in April, while understandable in that many more people are normally travelling at these times, is actually quite misleading. So far, figures available for the period 29th December 2016 to 3rd January 2017 indicate that there have been 426 deaths and 3,761 injured during that time. This is an increase on last year, but does not deviate very much from what the average number every other day of the year is. The last year statistics are currently available for is 2013, and the total number of road deaths for the whole year was 24,237, or an average of just over 66 per day. The average for this New Year is 71 per day. Statistics for Hua Hin specifically are not available, and only the figures for certain provinces have been made available for the current period, and Prachuap Kiri Khan is not one of them. However all provinces have been instructed to use the data to find solutions to reduce accidents not only during long holidays but also on regular days. At the same time, they were asked to promote conscience and responsibility among motorists, by Lt Gen Teerawat Boonyawat, head of civil affairs of the National Council for Peace and Order. We can only hope that these efforts, and the new more stringent driving test will go some way to reduce the daily carnage on Thailand’s roads. Ultimately it requires both better education, stricter enforcement and a change in attitudes to do so though.

VIETNAM Man has scissors removed from inside him after 18-year stomach ache A man has had scissors removed from his abdomen which were left behind during surgery 18 years ago, after reporting a stomach ache that was nearly two decades in the making. Ma Van Nhat, now 54, underwent surgery in 1998 after a car accident and only recently discovered that doctors had left an unwelcome gift behind when they closed him up. Doctors in Vietnam discovered the 6ins scissors near his colon after a recent ultrasound. He had a three-hour operation at the weekend to remove the scissors, according to Ngo Trung Thang, deputy head of general affairs at Gang Thep Thai Nguyen hospital, 50 miles north of Hanoi. ‘He is recovering well,’ Thang told AFP. Nhat had spent nearly two decades ‘eating, drinking and having a pretty normal life’, according to Suc Khoe va Doi Song news site, the official mouthpiece of Vietnam’s health ministry. The ultrasound that discovered the scissors only came about after Nhat reported stomach pains. Officials said they were searching for the doctors who performed surgery in Bac Kan province in 1998, but have not yet tracked down any culprits.

LIFE ON MARS

••

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT? There is one thing that can be absolutely guaranteed for anyone living in Thailand, and that is you will encounter a lot of wildlife, even in urban areas. This can sometimes be delightful, sometimes unpleasant and sometimes downright scary! For a start in Hua Hin there are the monkeys - there are a number of places where you will find them in large groups, most notably on the road up to Hin Lek Fai, and at the temple in Khao Takiab, but you will also see them swinging from the assortment of cables above Phetkasem Road and elsewhere. In general they are quite well behaved but if you are carrying food they can appear quite aggressive. Elephants are something you will occasionally see, more in the countryside and particularly in and around the route to Pala-U waterfall, as well as at the excellent Hutsadin Foundation and some other elephant sanctuaries. There have been some fairly serious encounters with wild elephants on roads running through their areas so it is wise to be cautious in those regions. The truly dangerous animals that you can encounter though are dogs; not dangerous, generally, in that they will attack you, although that does occur, but more for anyone travelling on two wheels. There are several accidents a week where cyclists or motorcyclists have either come off their bikes in trying to avoid them or have actually hit dogs that come out of nowhere. Car drivers also have these encounters which will damage their vehicle but more often than not does not lead to hospital, which is often the case with bikes. Part of the problem with the dogs is that there is both no appetite to humanely destroy problem dogs because of the country’s

Buddhist beliefs, nor apparently the will or the funds for local authorities to tackle the problem, for example by an ongoing neutering programme. There are charities and foundations who have been attempting to fill this void, but quite simply the size of the problem is to big for the resources they have, and it seems to be getting worse every year as nature takes its course and dogs continue to breed. This is also exacerbated by the number of previously ‘owned’ dogs that are abandoned when they become too much of a burden to feed and take care of, which is also a problem in other countries; however this has been partially solved in many of those countries by a combination of public education campaigns and the licencing of dogs, along with microchips injected into the skin of the dog with owner details. Whether this would work in Thailand is debatable, given how many people drive without licences for example, but a sustained neutering and rehoming programme is becoming more and more urgent. What everyone has to remember though is that this is not the fault of the dogs - they are just trying to survive. Most soi dogs on their own make perfectly fine pets once cleaned up and treated for ailments, but dogs do need taking care of.

CHRISTMAS CHARITY

GULF OF THAILAND BAR SOI 80 CHARITY TOY RUN

Submitted by Rod Groombridge On Friday the 23rd December Jim and his customers went on their usual bike ride that they do every Saturday. The difference this time though was that it was in support of the Padeng Childrens Shelter up in Pala-U. At 08:30 three cars loaded up with people and gifts plus fourteen bikes headed off the bring some Christmas joy to these children. When we got there we were amazed to see the joy in the faces of these children who have next to nothing but love in their hearts and desire to live life to the fullest. Not only not having a parent in their lives they seemed content and this really impressed all of us and many said that they brought a tear or two to their eyes. Most of the children have a grasp of English and were more than willing to try it out on us, and they completed our visit by singing Xmas Carols to us in English. All of the customers have decided that we are going to continually support the Shelter and not only at Christmas. Another run was organised to take up kitchen supplies, cleaning and bathroom products on the 29th. There were six of us that went including one of our Thai lady friends who decided to supply and cook lunch for the children and I can assure everyone that nothing was left over. Many of the customers who are regular visitors to Hua Hin have pledged their support while they back in their home countries They are in need of many things, food, cleaning and bathroom products, building materials, clothing and especially school gear etc. If you are able to help us with this fine project donations of all kinds would be greatly accepted at Jim’s Gulf of Thailand bar in Soi 80, or you can contact Jim on 084 720 3083. And if you wish to join us on our Saturday bike rides, you are more than welcome - these visit many different places, and we stop for lunch at small family restaurants. Jim (Somchai Nimwanno)

EVERYTHING’S BETTER WITH A FLOWER GARLAND Many people are glad to see the back of 2016, but while some have made dire predictions for this year, there is nothing more certain than the one prediction I feel confident in making. And that is that the Powers That Be in Thailand will continue to pronounce any peculiar death of a farang to be suicide. We have seen so many of these cases over the years that they become almost common place. Found handcuffed with a plastic bag over his head? It has to be suicide. Tied up inside a wardrobe? Same same but different. There is no doubt that each and every one of these cases, whatever the cause, is a sad loss, but the most recent almost defies belief. ‘Almost’ because it happened in The Land of Smiles - which must be the only place in the world where a farang tied to a post in the sea with his throat cut could have killed himself. While the families of all these victims deserve answers, we know that nothing will change. So - are you going to be one of the first to try the new ferry service? Do you trust the Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya or the fishing pier in Hua Hin to take the combined weight of a catamaran load of passengers? Or maybe you have already taken advantage of the free passage to paradise which ends on January 15th. Or thereabouts, depending on whose report you believe. Despite these and other teething problems, such as cancellations and uncertainty over departure points from Hua Hin, I really do hope that the new ferry works out this time. A couple of earlier attempts failed, but there has to be a market for a reliable Gulf crossing between two of what are the most popular Thai resorts. The price of a single fare, around 1200 baht or so, might

seem a lot for expats, especially when an overnight stay or three is factored in, but surely it will appeal to tourists travelling both ways? Time and the sea states will tell, but let’s keep everything crossed and wish the ferry well. Just make sure that it has a flower garland on the bow before you board. Seven hours away Hull has welcomed in it’s year as City of Culture with a bang. A lot of bangs in fact as a spectacular firework display was staged on January 1st. To be honest it was over too quickly and probably looked better on TV, but it certainly drew the crowds, while what really appealed to us locals were visual displays on some large buildings which depicted the history of the city. All worth taking it easy on New Years’ Eve for, and we joined the stampede for the special buses laid on for the opening events with just one thought in mind can we really take another 364 days of this? No, of course we can’t. Things will calm down, and no doubt, just like the Hua Hin/Pattaya ferry service, not everything will go to plan. Hull will need some flower garlands along the way as well. But it will be worth having a go.

On This Day

No particular anniversaries this week, but spare a thought for two countries where someone must have messed with the calendars and made Christmas Day January 7th. Happy Christmas Russia and the Ukraine.

FEATURED GAME

SATURDAY 7TH JANUARY 2017 THE FA CUP - THIRD ROUND West Ham Utd v Manchester City 02:55 A tough ask for the Hammers, facing both Manchester teams in only 5 days, and having been knocked out of the League Cup by United at the quarter final stage. Both teams will be missing players due to the African Nations tournament, and there will probably be a temptation for both managers to play weaker than normal sides anyway, although the West Ham manager has always respected the competition. The home side were unlucky in defeat on Monday, and this will be competitive; we think it will end in a draw, leading to an unwanted replay for both sides.

UK Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, this week hailed the man who he believes has proved himself a worthy successor to the legendary referee Howard Webb, as Mike Dean put in an impeccable performance to help the Red Devils to a win in the league for the first time in six attempts against West Ham. A harsh early red card and an offside goal were ‘the stuff dreams are made of ’ according to Mourinho, although the Portuguese manager did admit that he was ‘disappointed not to even get a sniff of a penalty’. Webb has gone down in Manchester United history by being said to be the reason behind at least three of their Premier League titles when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, with a series of outstanding decisions, including the addition of mystery added on time that frequently allowed the team to win, awarding far more penalties for them

a slump in their form. Webb is now a commentator for BT Sport, and is said to be ‘flabbergasted’ at the unsubtle way Dean handed the game to the away side, while maintaining his claim that he was never biased towards them.
