SHORT TIME ILLEGAL AND ENCROACHING HOTELS RAIDED

•Six• hotels located on the Naresdamri Road between Saphan Pla and Sarn Jao Mae Thap Thim, the stretch HUA HIN

of beachfront land that has been scheduled to be cleared to make way for a sea view promenade, have been raided and booked by thirty soldiers, police and members of the local Hua Hin administration under the leadership of district chief Rutpratheep Thamrapheephat, for encroachment and also operating without the requisite licenses. The establishments face fines of up to 10,000 baht a day from when they were opened, and will be prosecuted under a 1994 hotel law. There has been a crackdown all over Thailand on both beach encroachment, but more significantly on ‘hotels’ operating without proper licenses, and it is something that many condominium and house owners should be wary of falling foul of as well. Any landlord or landlady who rents or leases a property out for less than 30 days must possess a licence to do so, as this is what is deemed as operating as a hotel, as opposed to longer term rentals. The Thai Hotels Association (THA) has been pressuring the authorities to enforce these existing laws for some time, and in recent weeks and months, action has been taken against a number of establishments, both in Hua Hin and around Thailand. It is estimated that of the more than 18,000 hotels in the country, only 8,000 are registered, comprising 400,000 rooms. That leaves more than 10,000 hotels with more than 400,000 rooms operating illegally. The THA argues that this is potentially damaging for tourism, with unlicensed hotels maybe offering substandard quality and could even be unsafe for guests, although the loss of earnings to registered hotels is the more likely motive to ask for the clampdown.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. Donkey’s ears works as rhyming slang whereas donkey’s years THIS WEEK IT IS.....DONKEY’S YEARS doesn’t. In rhyming slang the last word of a short phrase A very long time. A question commonly asked of etymologists is if the British is rhymed with the word that gives the slang meaning; for slang term for ‘a very long time’ is donkey’s years or donkey’s example, trouble and strife - wife, apples and pears - stairs, etc. ears. Most people’s first thoughts are, “donkey’s years of course It makes little sense for the phrase to have originated in slang - what would ears have to do with it?”. It turns out that this form as donkey’s years, as that would rhyme ‘years’ with ‘years’. is almost certainly incorrect. Donkey’s years is now the more The migration from donkey’s ears to donkey’s years was no commonly used slang term when meaning ‘a long time’, but doubt aided by the belief that donkeys live a long time. There’s donkey’s ears, although used little in recent years, has been a some truth in that. Lively Laddie, a donkey who had lived up jokey alternative for some time - certainly from the early 20th to his name for many years while plying his trade on Blackpool Pleasure Beach was, until his death at age 62, a contender for century, viz. E. V. Lucas’ Vermilion Box, 1916: the ‘oldest living donkey’ title. “Now for my first bath for what the men call ‘Donkey’s ears’, meaning years and years.”

Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Email it to us on submissions@awolonline.net

This slightly pre-dates the earliest printed version that I can find of donkey’s years, in the US newspaper The Bridgeport Telegram, 1923: “With a heavy make-up, you’ll be the cutest vamp I’ve seen in donkey’s years.” It is quite likely that donkey’s ears was the earlier form and that it originated as rhyming slang, in an allusion to the length of the animal’s ears. Donkey’s ears/years is often shortened just to donkeys. That is characteristic of rhyming slang, as in syrup (of figs) - wig or plates (of meat) - feet.

UK Man paid £90,000 from hairdressing chain after trim resulted in huge stroke Dave Tyler, 45, got his hair cut and washed at his regular Headmasters salon in 2011. But while his hair was being washed at a sink, pressure from the rim damaged an artery at the back of his neck which led to a blood clot. Just three days later, he lost feeling in the right side of his body and collapsed on his way to a meeting. After being rushed to A&E, David, from Hove, East Sussex, was told he had suffered a stroke. Five years later, he can no longer drive, suffers from balance problems and often endures pains and temperature flare ups on the left side of his body. Dave said: ‘It was a Monday in March 2011 and I had my hair cut and washed. I remembered a thin layered towel was put under my neck.’ He’d been going to the same salon in Brighton for around a year and each time they had used the same kind of towel. The sound engineer said: ‘I remember the girl who was washing my hair asked if I was comfortable, but as anybody who has had their hair washed at a salon knows, it’s never a comfortable position.’ Dave, who has two daughters, aged eleven and eight, went on to spend the next three months in hospital and a further six months at home before he was well enough to return to work. Dave took legal action against Headmasters and was paid an out of court settlement. Now he wants to raise awareness of the problem, dubbed as beauty salon stroke syndrome, within the industry. He said: ‘It’s not a one off, I have read about a woman in Hertfordshire and another in San Diego, who suffered the

Cicada Market

To Khao Takiab Centre same thing. Washing hair is the sort of thing people quite junior in the industry do, so they need to be aware of the risks.’ The risk from can be reduced by using padded cushions on sinks.

USA Grandma selling lifelike dolls has to convince police she’s not selling real babies A grandmother who sells painted life-like dolls had to try desperately to convince police she wasn’t selling real babies. Kathy Cadle, who paints and sells the dolls, was reported as a suspected human trafficker. The grandmother, from Sheffield Lake in Ohio, was at home chatting with her grandson online when police came knocking. The officer said: ‘There’s a report of you selling a baby.’ To which Ms Cadle replied: ‘Are you kidding me?’ She later found out that police had spent much of the day questioning her friends. Ms Cadle handed one of her realistic dolls to Sgt. Frank Goscewski in order to convince him that she wasn’t actually selling live infants. He left her property satisfied she was not guilty of the accusations of human trafficking. Creating the dolls, which are made from vinyl, is something of a family tradition introduced to Ms Cadle and her sister Rachel Smith by their mother Dolores. Smith’s creations, sold under company name Bunny Bundles Reborns, have featured in front page spreads and are used as therapy dolls for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Ms Cadle said: ‘She ends up on the front page of the paper, and I end up being investigated.’

ADVENT CALENDAR I just bought a Jehovah’s Witness advent calendar.

GRADUATION Three women go down to Mexico one night to celebrate college graduation. They get drunk and wake up in jail, only to find that they are to be executed in the morning – though none of them can remember what they did the night before. The first one, a redhead, is strapped in the electric chair and is asked if she has any last words. She says, “I just graduated from Trinity Bible College and believe in the almighty power of God to intervene on the behalf of the innocent.” They throw the switch and nothing happens. The executioners all immediately fall to the floor on their knees, beg for forgiveness, and release her. The second one, a brunette, is strapped in and gives her last words. “I just graduated from the Harvard School of Law and I believe in the power of justice to intervene on the part of the innocent.” They throw the switch and again, nothing happens. Again they all immediately fall to their knees, beg for forgiveness and release her. The last one, a blonde, is strapped in and says, “Well, I’m from the University of Texas and just graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and I’ll tell ya right now, ya’ll ain’t gonna electrocute nobody if you don’t plug this thing in.”

LIFE ON MARS

••

SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES The advent of large screen televisions with crystal clear pictures and home theatre sound systems, along with the availability of internet streaming services has encouraged many people to forego the traditional cinema experience in favour of home comforts, but there are still plenty of others who prefer the fully immersed enjoyment of a film as it was intended to be viewed by those making it. Going to the pictures in Hua Hin only really became possible for most foreigners when Market Village was built in 2006, with its Major Cineplex on the top floor; there apparently used to be an old cinema off Phetkasem Road just north of the junction with Chomsin Road, but the building it was in has been derelict since at least 2002. With the opening of the Bluport Mall, which houses a second Major Cineplex, there are now 10 screens available in the town. Unfortunately, both the cinemas in Hua Hin are not that similar to those found in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket or other tourist destinations, and their offering of movies in their original language is sparse, with many only being available dubbed into Thai. It is not recommended to do as you can elsewhere and just turn up at the cinema thinking that there will be a movie you are able to watch (and understand) within the next hour - as an example the movies showing on the day we write this are available in a total of 44 timeslots across the ten screens; of those timeslots only 12 are showing with the original soundtrack (with Thai subtitles) and another 9 are in Thai with English subtitles, although these are all Thai movies. Further to that, one of the movies in both cinemas is the new Disney offering, Moana, which has 7 timeslots allotted, with none of them being anything other than Thai language only. This is, however, an improvement on what used to be available, but another problem is that you can’t even find out what is going to be on at the Hua Hin cinemas in the future, either at the cinemas themselves or via the Major Cineplex website. AWOL, and prior to that, the Observer magazine, has tried in vain to obtain the information to make available to our readers, but it simply is not possible to get hold of it. It seems as incredible as the storylines of some movies that in this day and age no one in that group knows this information, but this is one of those times that long time expats shrug their shoulders and say ‘T.I.T. - This Is Thailand!’ For anyone wishing to attempt to find out information about cinema times in Hua Hin, you may find the following information helpful: Major Cineplex Bluport Tel. 032 523245 Major Cineplex Market Village 032 526204 Website: www.majorcineplex.com

MAKING MERIT Thank Buddha for all the goings on in Thailand that can brighten such a dark dreary English December! Even the most hardened of expats surely have to admit that ‘Amazing Thailand’ never fails to deliver. The Thai police are never far removed from a good story, together with photographic evidence, and have really excelled this past week. First with news that they have orders from on high to use hand gestures when needed to defuse difficult situations, such as trying the peace sign out on angry motorists. If only that would really work police forces around the world would never have to resort to riot shields and tasers again. Then the neat idea of deploying mounted police to patrol the beaches in Phuket. A sensible enough move, given that horses can get around faster on sand than humans any day. Just a shame that the police horses are no more than Thelwell pony sized. Great for tourist selfies but a bit lacking in the strong police image department. Still, at least they try. Also trying was the Khon Kaen abbot who claimed to have been making merit with a young woman while on a retreat away from his temple. The abbot, bless him, may have inadvertently answered two of those questions about life in a Wat which have always puzzled us. First that it is possible for inmates to leave temples for a bit of a retreat, in the same way that outsiders can retreat by entering them. Second that a monk can get away with almost anything when it is classed as making merit.

Meanwhile back in little old Hull a pub landlord hit the headlines by declaring a ban on Christmas jumpers. You know the sort of thing - festive colours adorned with googly eyed reindeer or cheeky Santas that light up. Sold in their millions by supermarkets at this time of the year and unravel in the first wash. Landlord Alan Murphy has been quoted as saying ‘we don’t want 15 lads all dressed in Christmas jumpers making a beeline for the bar and making it difficult for others’. And while that may sound discriminatory, as a fan of his three establishments I totally agree. Because Mr Murphy has invested heavily in bringing much needed traditional real ale hostelries back to the historic ‘old town’ area of the city. His three pubs are within easy staggering distance of one another, have character, excellent beer, and devoted regulars, and are highly regarded by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. All facts which the media conveniently ignores.

On This Day

And while we are in the midst of the rowdy office party season, December 16th is aptly the anniversary of one of the rowdiest parties of them all - the Boston Tea Party - which happened back in 1773. Minus the Christmas jumpers of course.

Would we have it any other way? Of course not.

FEATURED GAME

SUNDAY 18TH DECEMBER 2016 PREMIER LEAGUE Manchester City v Arsenal 23:00 For a club with the squad value and financial backing they have, Manchester City have been on a dreadful run recently, and while we are writing this review before the game against Watford in midweek, they look very shaky in defence, and in attack they seemed to run out of ideas without the influential Aguero, who will still be missing, suspended for this game. Arsenal will see this as an ideal opportunity to deal another blow to the Citizens title chances and enhance their own. However it will also be a chance for everyone to see if Pep Guardiola can produce the same brilliant management that he has exhibited elsewhere; we think this will be a high scoring draw.

(‘No Joke’ in Russian) ••

YOU’D ALSO TAKE A LOT OF DRUGS IF YOU LIVED HERE, CLAIM RUSSIAN ATHLETES

RUSSIA Russian athletes have confirmed that if you lived in Russia, you’d take shedloads of drugs too. Responding to allegations of substantial doping in the Olympic team, athletes denied the substances were performanceenhancing and said they were just what you need to get through another day in Sverdlovsk. Athletes drew comparisons with living in Birmingham, saying that most people there need substantial doses of skag to cope and Russia is like that, only without the charm, lovely people and attractive architecture. When asked if that was the Russian sense of humour they just looked stoically blank and took another swig of vodka.

Left: “Does this face look bothered?” - Russian 800 metres runner Mariya Savinova responds to accusations of doping

“Yes, we take a lot of Billy Whizz – or Billski Whizz as we call it here,” said shotputter Simonov Williamsovitch. “But the only thing that it makes fly by is the days, not the runners. “And five grams of high-grade crack is the only way I could believe anything broadcast on Russia television.”

The Kremlin has responded angrily to the allegations of doping by athletes, pointing out that if they took as many drugs as claimed there’s no way they’d be so far down the medals table these days.
