DEATH OF AMERICAN LECTURER; BROTHER WANTS TRUTH, JUSTICE

•Finding • out the truth of any matter, in any country, is never an easy thing, as there are always reasons for HUA HIN

one person’s truth to be different from anothers. Finding it out in Thailand can prove to be even more difficult, and has led to some making accusations of cover ups and lies, conspiracies even. Such is the case with the tragic death of James Hughes, an American who was a lecturer at Webster University, and was found in a Hua Hin hotel room in early September. Mr Hughes brother, David, has cast doubt on the official narrative that James died of a heart attack caused by failed respiration and blood circulation. Police at the time found no forced entry into the room. However a copy of the autopsy seen by David has led him to believe that James’ death was not natural, and was caused by a severe beating, as it apparently detailed other injuries, including contusion, tear and avulsion wounds, as well as internal bleeding on his head. Without someone coming forward to either give evidence or confess to such circumstances, it is impossible not only for us to judge the truth of the matter, but also the police. It is apparent from a number of high profile cases over the years, that investigations carried out in Thailand are not done with the same rigour, nor with the same resources, that similar investigations are carried out in the developed world, and the police do not get the same support from the public purse nor the public in Thailand. This is neither an excuse nor a criticism, it is just how it is here. For a brother thousands of miles away though, this is extremely hard to take, but one thing is certain - nothing he does now can bring his brother back, and trying to get the investigation reopened will probably only end in frustration.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. THIS WEEK IT IS.....A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH John Heywood, the 16th century collector of proverbs, recorded TWO IN THE BUSH another version in his ambitiously titled A dialogue conteinyng It’s better to have a lesser but certain advantage than the the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the Englishe tongue, possibility of a greater one that may come to nothing. 1546: This proverb refers back to mediaeval falconry where a bird in “Better one byrde in hande than ten in the wood.” the hand (the falcon) was a valuable asset and certainly worth The expression fits well into the catalogue of English proverbs, more than two in the bush (the prey). which are often warnings, especially warnings about hubris The first citation of the expression in print in its currently used or risk-taking. Some of the better known examples that warn form is found in John Ray’s A Hand-book of Proverbs, 1670, in against getting carried away by some exciting new prospect are: which he lists it as: ‘All that glitters is not gold’, ‘Fools rush in where angels fear to tread’, ‘Look before you leap’, ‘Marry in haste, repent at leisure’, A [also ‘one’] bird in the hand is worth two in the bush ‘The best-laid schemes of mice and men gang aft agley’. The Bird in Hand was adopted as a pub name in England in the By how long the phrase predates Ray’s publication isn’t clear, Middle Ages and many with this name still survive. as variants of it were known for centuries before 1670. The English migrants to America took the expression with them earliest English version of the proverb is from the Bible and was and ‘bird in hand’ must have been known there by 1734 as translated into English in Wycliffe’s version in 1382, although this was the year in which a small town in Pennsylvania was Latin texts have it from the 13th century: founded with that name. LIFE ON MARS

••

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER... There are some unique problems that affect certain hobbies and pastimes in Thailand, and one of the more troublesome ones in Hua Hin particularly is maintaining a beautiful garden. Frequent water outages and the fact that Hua Hin is reportedly the driest area in Thailand make the seemingly simple task of having a nice lawn problematic. The extreme heat that is a regular feature also makes the task of working in the garden much more arduous, and many people choose to employ local gardeners to carry out tasks such as cutting the grass, weeding and general maintenance. Many people resort to dispensing completely with a lawn, and either tile over their barren patch, concrete it or pour gravel where dying grass once was, but there is no doubting the aesthetics of a lawn are much more pleasing. And this is where a solution that most wouldn’t possibly consider ‘back home’ comes in - and that is artificial grass. Most people’s experience with this is limited, and there is sometimes quite a snobby attitude to the idea, but in the conditions prevalent in much of Thailand, it is the ideal solution. Artificial turf, much like many technologies, has come on leaps and bounds over the years, and is very often indistinguishable from real grass now. In fact, most Premier League football pitches are now hybrids of real and artificial grass, and virtually all training facilities are fully artificial because the technology behind it has improved so much, and a very long way from the trial ‘plastic’ pitches of the eighties that died a very quick death due to their unrealistic bounce and the abrasion burns players were getting. The look, texture, durability and feel will vary depending on how much you pay and who you purchase it from, but the amount of money, work and hassle it will save you during it’s lifetime will more than compensate for the initial installation. No more expensive sprinkler systems that clog up and stop working, no more hoses that start to crack and tangle, no muddy footprints, human or animal, traipsing through the house, just a beautiful lawn as you have always wanted. With the onset of the dry season here, it has to be worth considering the added implications of water savings as well; both from a personal perspective and the increasing problems of the water supply locally. Of course there is no coincidence that this week’s Life On Mars is covering this topic, as it won’t have escaped your notice that alongside this article is an advert for Magic Carpet, who are specialists in the field of artificial turf. They have a range of options as regards different quality choices suitable for anything ranging from sports arenas to a small poolside area. The turf can be installed by their experts, which is generally recommended, but in some instances, such as small flat areas, it can be easily installed yourself. Give them a call to find out more.

A BUNCH OF DUMMIES During the past week the BBCs record of the week has been the Cliff Richard Christmas release. Will that be a big enough carrot to make Sir Cliff drop his charges against the Corporation for their coverage of the police raid on his home in 2014, in connection with sex abuse allegations? Probably not. After all Sir Cliffs records have a limited audience these days and he really doesn’t need the royalties any more. In December 1761 a baby girl named Marie Grosholtz was born in France. By the age of 9 Maries’ father had died, and she moved to Paris with her mother, who had found work there with a Dr Curtius. As well as practising medicine Dr Curtius was interested in wax work images, and opened a wax work museum in 1770. Marie became his prodigy, learning from him and clearly becoming an adept artist, because in her late teens Marie was appointed art tutor to the sister of Louis XV1 at the Palace of Versailles. At that time of course teaching art was a genteel and very appropriate job for a woman, but what was to follow would seem barbaric even by todays’ standards. In 1789 Marie was summoned back to Paris by Dr Curtius, a revolutionary sympathiser, and was commanded to make death masks of victims of the French Revolution. The job involved her foraging around amongst victims, often collecting their decapitated heads. The death masks became exhibits in Dr Curtius’ museum, which Marie inherited in 1794 after the doctors’ death. By then Marie had married, but she left the troubles in France - and her husband - behind and moved to England, taking

Dr Curtius’ morbid collection with her. There she toured the country for many years with her ‘Chamber of Horrors’, which included the death mask of Louis XV1, until finally taking a permanent lease on a property in Baker Street, London, which in 1836 became the first settled home for her waxworks Madame Tussauds. The rest is history. Marie Tussaud must have been a remarkable woman in her time, but I wonder what she would make of Tussauds current task of creating a wax work of Donald Trump. It is proving to be a fiddly job, needing 25,000 dyed Yak hairs implanting to create the Trump coiffure. It is worth noting that the average blonde head of hair has up to 150,000 strands, while an average red head has around 90,000 hairs, so that comb over must be genuinely needed. This month sees a Hull lad taking on a tricky job as well. David, son of Lord John Prescott (whose wife Lady Pauline still has a very good head of hair) becomes speech writer to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Keep it in’t family lad.

On This Day

On a topical note, given the recent death of Fidel Castro, he became President of Cuba on this day in 1976, replacing Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado.

SATURDAY 3RD DECEMBER 2016 PREMIER LEAGUE Manchester City v Chelsea 19:30

This will be a real test of both team’s title credentials, with many pundits believing that the eventual champions will be one of them. We feel that City have the more complete squad and that it will only take a couple of injuries for Chelsea to lose momentum, while the home side can cope without a number of key players. With each having their best eleven playing though they are very even. A draw would suit Chelsea but we feel City have to win this one, and will.

END OF AN ERA •• ENGLAND FANS of Chelsea have announced they will retire a song mocking Steven Gerrard at the end of the 2018-19 season. They admit their Gerrard chant, related to a 2014 error by the Liverpool player that did not help Chelsea in any material way, is beginning to show its age but if used sparingly can still do a job. Chelsea fan Julian Cook said: “Sometimes I’ll be singing ‘Steve Gerrard, Gerrard, he slipped on his f***ing arse’ in an away game and I’ll feel aches that were never there when we sung it before. “It’s certainly lost some pace in the third line, because it takes a moment to remember who Demba Ba was, but it’s as intelligent and witty as ever.” The song, sung to the melody of Que Sera Sera, which was originally made famous by gay icon Doris Day, burst into football

CHELSEA SUPPORTERS TO RETIRE GERRARD CHANT IN 2019

Above: Steven Gerrard contemplates life without the chant

in April 2014 shortly after the Liverpool player’s inspiring slip that lost his club the league. It has remained a loyal one-club song, refusing a £42 million offer from eventual 2014 league winners Manchester City, and has frequently carried an otherwise patchy repertoire by performing well regardless of opponents. Cook added: “Steven Gerrard falling over is the best incident-turned-into-a-song of my lifetime. “I’m tearing up at the thought of it going. It’s everything heroism means, to me.” We asked club captain John Terry to comment, but his agent said that due to a similar use of the song about his client following his slip when taking a penalty in the Champions League final in 2008 that cost his club the trophy, he didn’t feel it was appropriate.
