ANOTHER NEW PATTAYA - HUA HIN FERRY SERVICE TO START NEW YEAR’S DAY

•The• latest effort to offer a ferry service between the two tourist spots facing each other across the Gulf of HUA HIN

Thailand is set to start on 1st January 2017, with a passenger only catamaran initially. Several previous attempts to offer a ferry service have ended after relatively short periods of time, although it has never been made clear as to the reasons. However, many will question whether there is enough demand to use such a service, and until full information on ticket prices, schedules and the departure and arrival spots is given, a comparison to take in journey time versus cost of alternatives to assess the new service will be impossible. We believe this information will be made available during December. One of the problems that has faced previous ferry operations is that the Gulf of Thailand can have quite difficult sea conditions, which in the past meant that ferries could not run on schedule. These conditions also made embarking and disembarking a problem, but hopefully the new company, who have been named as the privately run Royal Passenger Liner Co, will be able to avoid or deal with these problems. Estimates of the crossing time have been put at around two hours, or possibly slightly less, so depending on where the embarkation points are, this could mean a significantly shorter journey than is currently possible by road or rail. The daily round trip service will begin by carrying up to 150 passengers only, but with a planned service to include a larger ferry carrying up to 260 passengers, as well as one that is able to carry vehicles, although no dates or other details have been made available for these services, which will be subject to a feasability study and an environmental imact assessment.

UK Know that feeling of dread when you realise you’ve emailed everyone in your contacts list? Someone working for the NHS is living that right now. NHS staff, up and down the country, have been tweeting about a ‘test email’ allegedly sent by an IT worker to everyone on the payroll. And to make matters worse, people are asking to be removed from the email feed and hitting reply all (face-palm). The public body currently employs around 1.2 million people, so you can imagine the repercussions. One employee tweeted: ‘If you want something done by the NHS today don’t bother, everyone’s caught up in an email test in error storm.’ Another added: ‘OMG. So the whole NHS has been added to a email list by mistake Currently 54 replies from people asking to be removed. Today will hurt.’ The message is believed to have been sent by NHSmail, a secure email service used by the NHS.

UK Vegan single mum drinks sperm smoothies every morning to give her energy It’s an unconventional start to the day, but this woman swears by gulping down a smoothie every morning, with the key ingredient being… a teaspoonful of sperm. 29-year-old Tracy Kiss has been drinking the interesting concoction for the past month, saying it’s boosted both her mood and her immunity. The mum-of-two is currently single, so harvests her sperm from her best friend – or rather, he harvests it and delivers it to her up to three times a week. What are friends for, eh? Tracy – who’s vegan – stores it in tubs in the fridge with the rest of her groceries. The mum-of-two from Buckinghamshire then whizzes the batch up into a smoothie, with complementary ingredients such as bananas, seeds and almond milk. ‘I’d been feeling run down and had no energy, but now I’m full of beans and my mood has improved,’ says Tracy. The personal trainer and qualified nutritional adviser claims that sperm contains lots of vitamins and minerals – including B12, which vegans like herself lack in their diets. It should be noted that while Tracy raves about her sperm

concoctions, medical professionals would argue otherwise. But GP Dr Sarah Jarvis advises against the use of sperm as a dietary supplement, saying that it is devoid of nutrients. ‘There is absolutely no nutritional value to semen,’ she said. ‘A better way for vegans to get extra protein would be through foods like nuts.’ Nutritional value aside for a moment, just how does this unusual ingredient alter the taste of her breakfast drink? ‘Every batch tastes different, depending on what he’s been eating,’ she reveals. ‘If he’s been drinking alcohol or eaten something particularly pungent like asparagus, I ask him to give me a heads up so I know not to drink it neat.’ ‘Things like pineapple and peppermint make it taste better, but I’ll happily take it straight off a spoon usually.’ Tracy says she understands it may seem off-putting – but the results are worth it. ‘People are so weird about sperm when in actual fact a teaspoon is filled with amazing goodness,’ she says. The single mum is actually no stranger to incorporating sperm into her daily routine – she’s been slathering it on her face since last year, when she discovered it made a brilliant facial, and she now credits it for improving her complexion. Unsurprisingly, Tracy’s friend and sperm supplier initially had qualms about being her own personal sperm machine. ‘When I first approached him, he was concerned I’d use it to impregnate myself,’ she admits. ‘But once I’d convinced him it was for my beauty regime he agreed – after all, he has a regular supply at hand!’ As for the risks involved? ‘I know he’s healthy, doesn’t smoke, drink or do drugs and I made him have an STI check,’ she says. ‘My other mates think I’m strange, but I don’t give a toss.’ Luckily for Tracy’s pal, she’s keen to find a partner who will take over from him. After three years of being single, she is looking for love. Her goals? ‘I want a relationship where my partner asks if I want one shot or two shots of sperm in my smoothie each morning!’ Don’t we all?

Many relationships here struggle because of family ties (or perhaps that should read Thais?) and the fact that a majority of Thai people will place their family far ahead of you. The family in western countries has become a much less tight knit unit than in the past, but here it is a major aspect of life. Even the majority of those who work in the less salubrious parts of Thai life are fully committed to their families, and are often relying on them to take care of their children, and only working to make sure there is enough money for themselves and their family. Very often the family does not know either where or in what occupation they are working, and are just glad that the money is coming in. Depending on their background (and current occupation), it will often be some time into a relationship with a Thai before you will be taken to meet the parents, although you will likely have been ‘vetted’ by close friends, siblings, cousins or other relatives before that, often without realising it. Unfortunately, but understandably, this vetting process will often include establishing not only your character, but also your financial status. Farangs do not fit very well into the Thai social structure in that our overall status cannot easily be assessed in the same way that Thais can be by each other. This assessment is done almost automatically by every Thai on meeting someone, and within a very short time they will have a good idea where someone

stands in relation to themselves, and is fundamental in how they will interact with each other. This instant assessment covers several areas including age, appearance, speech and a host of other nuances, and also helps to explain why so many Thais are keen to be seen in expensive cars, as this will also play into how other Thais perceive their relative status. On the flip side of this, it also helps to explain why many Thais do not often invite people to their homes. It is also the reason that Thais will often be very direct with their questions when they first meet you, asking about salary, car and house value, for example. While foreigners will inevitably make judgements about others as well, it is generally not seen by most as either very polite or, to use a term that rarely crops up in Thailand, politically correct, to do so. We also have a very well known saying ‘Don’t judge a book by it’s cover’ - that is the antithesis of how most Thais act, although this is inevitably changing to some extent. It remains prevalent amongst the older generation and higher echelons of Thai society however, so if you are mixing with them, it is something to be acutely aware of.

TO HULL AND BACK

••

A BLACK AND WHITE ISSUE There are times when you wish you had placed a bet on a rank outsider way back when the odds were ridiculously long. The Trump victory was one of those times for most of us. Of course the President elect won’t be booking the removal vans just yet, but Jeremy Corbyn wasted no time in declaring the Trump victory - along with Brexit - as clear signs of dissatisfaction with political correctness. And he is probably right. We have also learned another valuable lesson - that the exit polls are not to be trusted. But there did seem to be one Trump who wasn’t very happy on election night, and that was young Barron, son of the President elect, who was forced into the limelight in the place usually occupied by the new First Lady. Maybe the lad had just found out what ‘trump’ means in England. Meanwhile cartoonists must have been cracking open the Krug at the prospect of such an easy subject for the next four years. 2016 has certainly been an interesting year politically, and it isn’t even over yet. It has also been a year in which much evidence has been unearthed - literally - about our ancestors in the UK, who were not as white as many would like to believe. The commonly known beginning of modern black British history was the arrival in London of the SS Empire Windrush in 1948, a boat carrying Jamaican migrants who were needed to fill jobs. At the time the Britains’ Colonial Secretary, one Arthur Jones pointed out that Jamaican people had British passports and must be allowed to land (in England.) He also allegedly added that they wouldn’t last one winter in England anyway so there was nothing to worry about. Was he a little bit racist even towards our Commonwealth cousins? In fact black and Asian people had arrived in Britain with the Romans, if not before. The Emperor Septimus Severus was the first black person to rule England (for 18 years from 193 AD) while the Picts, the earliest inhabitants of Scotland who ruled there for over 500 years, were known as ‘Moors’, meaning black. Hadrians Wall, built during the 120’s AD, was guarded by Roman/African officers and soldiers, presumably to keep the Picts on the Scottish side of it, but Scotland remained unconquered by them. Of course the Romans did get around a bit, taking on board Africans, Libyans and Chinese among others as they went, so it shouldn’t be a surprise if they became mixed race. But this year in particular has seen hard evidence that they brought people of other races to England with them. As well as old Septimus,

WEBSITES LOGOS ADVERTS MENUS SIGNS more...

who is known to be buried near York, two skeletons thought to be Chinese have been discovered in a Roman cemetery in Southwark, and other medieval remains thought to be Asian have also recently been found in the south of England. It is maybe no coincidence that Auntie Beeb is currently running a four part series on the history of people of African origin who lived in Britain from Roman times. ‘Black and British: A Forgotten History’ is broadcast on BBC 2 on Wednesday evenings. Also set to open next Spring is a series of theatre productions by a black led touring company based in Sheffield, which aim to depict the stories of real people and events over the past 500 years, and culminating with the 2018 anniversary of the arrival of the Windrush.

On This Day

In much more recent times 18th November is the 29th anniversary of that horrific Kings Cross fire, while just to show that history isn’t all bad, on the same date in 1928 Mickey Mouse made his screen debut in Steamboat Willie.

FEATURED GAME

SUNDAY 20TH NOVEMBER 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP Leeds United v Newcastle United 20:15 A throwback to the Seventies, and both sets of fans must be eagerly awaiting this game, with Newcastle top of the table and Leeds in sixth. It is also the first time these sides have met since the death of Gary Speed five years ago, and as he played for both teams a tribute is going to be made with a minutes silence before the match. Both teams are in good form, with Newcastle on a seven match winning streak, Leeds having won their last three, and both have in form goalscorers, Leeds’ Chris Wood and Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle, both on eleven goals. This has all the makings of an end to end score draw we think, and well worth watching.

ENGLAND PLAYERS CONTROVERSIALLY ALLOWED TO WEAR THREE LIONS

ENGLAND FIFA has turned down a request to stop the England team disrespecting the historic three lions England crest by wearing it. Many fans believe the current team’s wearing of the three lions shows a lack of respect to those who had gone before them and managed to pass a ball ten yards. England supporter Wayne Hayes said: “Is this what Terry Butcher ran around with blood pouring from his head for? Is this why Gazza cried? Is this why Geoff Thomas shanked that shot against France? “To see the crest besmirched by Wayne Rooney wearing it while wandering around the pitch like he’s in IKEA is a disgrace.” England manager Gareth Southgate said: “The decision whether to wear the three

lions should be a personal one, unless you mess up a vital penalty you’re inexplicably taking in a major tournament, in which case you should be allowed nowhere near them.” Funds raised by the sale of England shirts with the crest help to fund various causes, such as firing managers and staging doomed bids to host the world cup. Meanwhile the ‘Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home)’ song has been rerecorded for the 19th time in support of the campaign and is expected to top the charts once again with it’s famous chorus line adapted to ‘Fifty Years Of Hurt’, Now Has Stopped Us Dreaming’.
