CHANGING FACES

A NEW LOOK AS AWOL PASSES ANOTHER MILESTONE

•As•some of our readers will be aware, we have been running a survey on a redesign for AWOL; this has HUA HIN

now closed and the results have led to what you are reading right now, as we launch the new look AWOL. Thank you to everybody who responded to the survey, and we hope that you will all like the updated look, which has been quite extensive, although the content of the paper will remain as before. The milestones we have passed recently were our 400th issue last week, and completing 8 years of publication in early October; we were planning to hold a party to celebrate both of those and the new look, but due to the current period of mourning in Thailand this has been postponed, and we will bring you news of the rearranged event as soon as we feel it is respectful to do so. Please send us your comments and opinions on our new design, not just the front page but throughout the paper, as well as ideas, suggestions and constructive criticism for our content, and comments on local news; you can do so through a multitude of channels - by email to info@awolonline.net, to our Facebook page (AWOLexpat), via the ‘Contact Us’ button found on our website (www.awolonline.net), or on our Forum at www.awolonline.net/forum. We do want to hear from you, and if we get enough feedback every week, we would like to introduce a letters page, but this is entirely dependent on you, our readers.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. In April 1896, the Ohio newspaper The Daily Herald took it THIS WEEK IT IS..... OLD CHESTNUT A story that has been told repeatedly before, a ‘venerable’ unto itself to explain the phrase’s origin. It published a story joke. Hence, in extended use, anything trite, stale, or too often about the actor who had played Pablo in early productions of Broken Sword: repeated. Old chestnutThe phrase ‘old chestnut’ has only an indirect association with chestnut trees or with their fruit. The derivation William Warren, who had often played the part of Pablo, was of the expression turns out to be a contender for old chestnut at a ‘stag’ dinner when one of the gentlemen present told a story status itself. The story goes like this: in 1816, a melodrama of doubtful age and originality. ‘A chestnut,’ murmured Mr. called Broken Sword, by the playwright and theatrical manager Warren, quoting from the play. ‘I have heard you tell the tale William Dimond, was performed at the Royal Covent Garden these 27 times.’ The application of the line pleased the rest of the table, and when the party broke up each helped to spread the Theatre, London. The play contained this exchange: story and Mr. Warren’s commentary. Zavior: I entered the wood at Collares, when suddenly from the The play itself, although popular in its time, was 80 years old thick boughs of a cork tree... Pablo: (Jumping up.) A chesnut, Captain, a chesnut... Captain, by 1896 and Warren was long dead, so the Daily Herald story this is the twenty-seventh time I have heard you relate this was (at best) based on Chinese whispers or (at worst) pure invention. However, even if that stag dinner wasn’t the first story, and you invariably said, a chesnut, till now. use of the ‘chesnut’ expression and Warren didn’t originate Despite a drubbing from the critics, the play was a success and it, someone else could easily have used the same source. The gist of the tale, that ‘old chestnut’ derives from the play Broken later transferred to theatres in the USA. So far, so factual. Here’s where we move from fact to plausibility. In the 1880s, Sword, hovers somewhere between plausibility and fact and many American newspapers began using ‘chestnut’ in the way many choose to believe it. we do now, to refer to hoary, oft-repeated stories, and the term became established in the common lingo thereafter. The ‘old’ Is there an English phrase or saying that was added later as an intensifier.

LIFE ON MARS

••

EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE We have touched on the subject of driving in Thailand before in this section, and no doubt it will come up again in the future, because so much of life here revolves around road transport, whether you are driving yourself or taking the various forms of private and public road transport. When you are driving yourself, you will be very lucky never to have any dealings with the supposed custodians of the road, the Thai Traffic police. While many of these are good, honest, competent and sensible officers, there is a sizable minority that trash all the good work the others do. Chief among those in that part of the police force who are seen as either incompetent, or worse, corrupt, are the ones who control the traffic flow, either by manipulation of the traffic lights or by hand signals. Traffic lights have been around for a very long time, and are generally pre-programmed to follow a set pattern; manual override is obviously necessary on occasion, but most of the time the lights can be left to run on their own. In Thailand, however, and in Hua Hin in particular, every major junction with lights has a police box with an officer sitting in it, and they have a particular penchant for pushing the buttons to override the set sequence, regardless of whether the traffic flow requires it. Some might say that they do so in order to catch drivers who regularly pass through that junction out, in order to extract a fine from them, although we couldn’t possibly confirm that. Others might say that they just don’t know what they are doing, and as a consequence drivers find themselves falling foul of the law, and certainly our experience of officers attempting

to direct traffic in the street suggests that this might be the case, as frequently traffic jams are worse when the police take control. The Thai people themselves have very little time for the police here either, and comments we have heard often include the words ‘lazy’, ‘corrupt’ and ‘useless’, but it is unfair to label all police as being the same. Some are incredibly dedicated and industrious, and would not be out of place in most Western police forces, and they must get as frustrated as the people at the actions (or inaction) and incompetence of their colleagues. If the powers that be wanted to ensure a lasting popularity with both the electorate and foreigners visiting Thailand, then it need do no more than sort out the Thai police - train them better, pay them better and be more ruthless in getting rid of those officers who drag down the reputation and practices of the rest of the force. We don’t think it is likely to happen, but it is always good to have a dream, isn’t it?

TO HULL AND BACK

••

SCARY THOUGHT This weekend is set to be a long drawn out celebration of Halloween here in the UK. As often happens when these events fall on a Sunday the population tends to react by spreading the festivities over at least three nights, which makes the supermarkets very happy. This year one supermarket is selling life size models of witches, with skeleton faces that cackle when you walk past them, which can be yours for a mere 60 pounds, or around 2600 baht in these days of the weak pound. Who says that our economy is struggling? But why do we celebrate October 31st at all? We are carrying on ancient traditions begun by the Celts, Pagans and Gauls which have merged over time and gained a sprinkling of Christianity along the way. The Celts and Pagans believed that All Hallows Eve, the evening before All Saints Day on November 1st, marked the end of summer and the passage of light to dark. It was a time to celebrate the harvest and to take stock of supplies in preparation for the long, dark, frightening days ahead. After all they wouldn’t have been sure that their food supplies would last, or even if there would be another Spring. For the Gauls it was also a dangerous night, because on All Hallows Eve the boundaries between the living and the dead were at their weakest. The dead would return and wreak havoc on the crops, so they must be appeased, and one way to show them respect was to dress up as spirits. All very sensible precautions at a time when people didn’t understand how the world worked, and not too dissimilar to Songkran and the use of spirit houses today. But an event which expats might not be too sorry to miss out on this year. Talking about crops and harvests, as Brexit drags along some British farmers are worrying about losing their cheap labour. Traditionally those labour intensive fruit and pea picking jobs were tailor made for gap year students, but with gap year full moon parties taking priority the work passed to European migrants, who, it is feared, could now also disappear due to proposed visa restrictions. (Sound familiar?) With re-assurances from the government that new rules won’t affect existing migrant workers falling on deaf ears, one solution has been suggested which sounds far too sensible to have come from within the Palace of Westminster. Use prisoners instead. Charge the farmers the minimum hourly rate, pay the prisoners their even lower wage for working, and use the profit to help

’s g Jinsort Re

maintain the prisons. Give that person a Knighthood! Seriously though, if Brexit continues to force people to come up with such sensible and obvious solutions to what many thought would be a disaster, then surely it will succeed?

On This Day

On October 29th 1986 the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher opened the M25 motorway, hailing it a splendid achievement. It is fair to say that 30 years on there is a bit more traffic on it.

FEATURED GAME

SATURDAY 29TH OCTOBER 2016 PREMIER LEAGUE Man Utd v Burnley 15:00 It has been a miserable week for Jose Mourinho and his team after being humiliated on his return to Stamford Bridge, and at press time the result of their League Cup tie against Manchester City was unknown, but we imagine this resulted in another loss. Here is a chance to redeem themselves in a game most will expect them to win, but Burnley are no pushovers. United are not scoring many goals so we expect a tight affair, with the away team defending in numbers and attacking on the break. Expect the boos to ring out as we predict a shock narrow Burnley win.

UNITED WE FALL

GARY NEVILLE REFUSING TO COME DOWN FROM OLD TRAFFORD ROOF

••

ENGLAND GARY Neville has been sat on the roof of Old Trafford since midnight on Sunday, police have confirmed. The former United defender was seen climbing the side of the stadium last night with an Alex Ferguson doll under one arm, swatting at moths caught in the security lights as if they were biplanes. Inspector Nikki Hollis said: “He’s said he’s not coming down until scientists work out a way of cloning Gary Pallister. “I got one of my officers to sing the 1994 Status Quo hit Come On You Reds to try and soothe him, but when he got to the ‘keep us at the top where we belong’ bit he started throwing roof tiles at him.” Police negotiators have been unable to coax Neville down after an intense 45-minute conversation involving Paul Pogba’s fee and Wayne Rooney’s wage bill

convinced them he had a point. Alternative solutions are now being suggested including building a commentary box on the roof or waiting for the local weather to eventually ‘rinse’ him off the building. Hollis said: “We’ve got until Saturday to get him down safely or cover the whole place with safety netting before United play Burnley.” Pundits are widely predicting another heavy defeat for Mourinho’s men, and hopes are dwindling that Neville will ever be coaxed off the roof.

Above: Psychiatrists have been concerned about Gary Neville’s mental health for some time
