SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Peter out Dwindle away to nothing. The earliest known use of peter as a verb meaning dwindle relates to the mining industry in the USA in the mid 19th century, and it is reasonable to accept that that is where it originated. Thoughts of US mining at that date bring to mind images of the California Gold Rush, which is sometimes suggested as the source of this phrase. The earliest uses of the word in that context come from later, for example, this piece from the Milwaukee Daily Gazette, December 1845, which pre-dates the California rush (although there was an earlier Georgia Gold Rush in 1829). The story concerns an old prospector who is comparing his dwindling life circumstances with his diminishing finds of the mineral galena (lead sulphide): “When my mineral petered why they all Petered me. Now it is dig, dig, dig, drill, drill for nothing. My luck is clean gone - tapered down to nothing.” There are several other records of the use of ‘petering’ to refer to dwindling mining reserves in 1840s USA, although none of these explicitly uses the phrase ‘peter out’. For such a reference we have to wait for a figurative usage in the American lawyer/ writer Henry Hiram Riley’s collection of articles - Puddleford and its People, 1854: “He hoped this ‘spectable meeting warn’t going to Peter-out.”

While the root source of ‘peter out’ is fairly certainly mining, there’s no clear understanding of why the word ‘peter’ was chosen in this context. As always, when an etymology is uncertain, people like to guess. ‘Peter’ has many meanings, both as a noun and a verb, and so the speculations are wide-ranging. They include a suggestion of a link to Saint Peter and to the story that his faith in Jesus faded when he denied him before his crucifixion. There could also be a link between St. Peter being called the rock, in Matthew 16:18: And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. That may have made an association between Peter and rock, so that a dwindling seam of rock or mineral could be said to have petered out. Another suggestion is an allusion to the French word péter (to break wind - literally to explode, but also used figuratively to mean fizzle), as in the phrase péter dans la main, meaning ‘to come to nothing’. Of all of the proposed derivations of the word ‘peter’ in the idiom ‘peter out’, the one that best stands up to scrutiny is the link to saltpetre (potassium nitrate). This mineral was a constituent of the gunpowder that was used as an explosive in mining and was also used to make fuses. Saltpetre is at least associated with something that miners would have known something about, that is, mining, as opposed to theology or French quotations.

NAILED IT! Mr. Arkwright, a manufacturer of nails decides its time to expand the company. After a call to Saachi and Saachi he is promised a fantastic ad campaign which will be shown after Songs of Praise on Sunday evening. Anxiously waiting for his ad to come up he sits proudly in his favourite chair with a whisky and a cigar. The ad comes up and shows the Romans nailing Jesus to a cross, with a caption: “Arkwright’s Nails”, Being of a religious sort he wasn’t too happy and called up Saachi and Saachi on Monday morning to complain about the blasphemous ad. The ad men tell him they will have a brand new commercial on the following Sunday which should be more acceptable. Next Sunday Arkwright is back in his chair in front of the TV with a dram and cigar waiting nervously for the new ad. The ad comes on with a scene depicting Jesus legging it down the hill with the caption “Should have used Arkwright’s Nails”.

LIFE GUARD I just lost my job at the swimming pool as a life guard. Apparently tapping the “No Bombing” sign as a Muslim family walks past isn’t acceptable. CRAZY What’s the first sign of madness??? Suggs walking up your drive singing ‘Our House’.

LIFE ON MARS

HOW TO SURVIVE AS AN ALIEN IN THAILAND

BLANK SPACE The passing of His Majesty the King of Thailand last week was an event that had been feared by the majority of Thailand’s inhabitants for some time, and helps to explain the outpouring of grief that has been seen all over the country. While the Prime Minister and Royal Family have moved quickly to calm the people’s trepidation, and the twelve month mourning period, as well as showing how much respect everybody had and still has for His Majesty, will help a difficult transition from the man seen as the father of Thailand to his successor. Many in Thailand believe that it is impossible for anyone to ever equal the achievements of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and it is certain that no future monarch will ever be able to enjoy the same levels of love and adoration he did. There are obvious comparisons to be made between the changes experienced in Thailand during his reign, and those in the UK under the now longest reigning living monarch Queen Elizabeth the second, with both starting their reigns shortly after the end of the Second World War, in countries that have changed dramatically, and

have tried to instigate a more modern Royal Family, that had more of a common touch. With his love of music, jazz in particular, his regular adoption of stray dogs, his inventions and initiatives, such as the successful rain-making efforts in drought hit areas, along with his interventions at crucial times for the country, King Bhumibol completely endeared himself to the Thai people. Before his health started failing he would frequently visit far flung parts of the Kingdom, as well as encouraging other members of the Royal Family to do so too. All of this, and much, much more, have left a big hole in the lives of the Thai people, as well as those expats who have experienced some of his reign. We can only hope that the coming months and years progress peacefully, and that the new monarch is given the time and assistance to try and fill the void we now face. Send your comments or suggestions for this column to us at submissions@awolonline.net (Subject/Title ‘Life On Mars’) or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ AWOLexpat (please Like our page as well!)

AND BACK MAGS MEANDERINGS: FROM SOM TAM TO MUSHY PEAS CUTS BOTH WAYS News in the UK last week was dominated by the great Marmite crisis. It should come as no surprise to us Brits that our parochial little island can get it’s priorities so wrong sometimes, even though Marmite does sell newspapers, especially when they offer free jars of the stuff. The even bigger surprise is that we have the Great God Tesco to thank for making it’s first sensible decision, albeit a hypocritical one to many, by taking the lead in the Marmite Revolution. I know only too well that many expats miss that claggy brown mess more than anything else, to the extent that they are prepared to pay inflated Villa prices for it. But rest assured that the pricing issue hitting Tesco in the UK shouldn’t affect you as well, because manufacturer Unilever is blaming the value of the falling pound for increasing the cost of its’ products to retailers by around 10 per cent, an increase Tesco refused to pay. And the Unilever range is big, including Ben and Jerry’s, Persil, Comfort and PG Tips. All the kind of products in fact for which acceptable alternatives can easily be found apart from Marmite of course. The really puzzling thing is how the value of the pound can affect the price of Marmite at all, as it is made in Burton on Trent in the Midlands. On the downside Tesco is one of the very supermarkets accused of tying their farm suppliers into low cost/ strict quality agreements which result in mountains of waste in the form of bent carrots and the like. Can they continue to have it both ways? Now for a subject that should appeal to our female readers, although ‘appeal’ maybe isn’t the right word for the medically needless caesarean births said to be happening in Brazil.

YOUR AD HERE FROM ฿66 A WEEK Call 081 649 8361 Email sales@awolonline.net

Doctor Mukesh Kapila, a professor of global health and humanitarian affairs at Manchester University has researched maternal and infant death rates around the world, along with standards of pre and post natal care and the differing attitudes that exist towards childbirth. The statistics are startling. Every day 830 women are known to die from complications in pregnancy and childbirth, in spite of a 44 per cent reduction in deaths world wide since 1990. And to quote Doctor Kapila ‘ the act of giving birth is still very much a lottery with the dice loaded according to who you are and where you live’. ln Brazil one way to reduce the risk appears to be by performing C sections in up to 66 per cent of cases, (compared to 25 per cent in the UK, which still sounds a lot.) But the culture of Brazil, where giving birth naturally is for poor people, has much to do with that very high percentage. And of course there is more money to be made by the medical profession from C sections in a country where if you are posh you don’t push. October 21st is the birthday of a celeb who once owned a lot of posh jewellery - Kim Kardashian. What a great opportunity for her husband Kanye West to do the decent thing and replace her stolen engagement rock. After all Kims’ insurance company could be watching that space on her ring finger very closely. And finally, at long last a Nobel prize for literature has gone to someone whose songs many of us have grown up with, and whose words we can understand. Well done Bob Dylan.

Sunday 23rd October 2016 PREMIER LEAGUE Man City v Southampton 19:30 City are having a bit of a wobble, by their standards, while Southampton are flying. Admittedly last week’s opposition for each were not of the same level, but City looked disjointed, and the Saints will look to exploit the weaknesses. We can see them getting at least a point here, and a decent chance of all three, which will tighten things even further at the top. FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE

A TALE OF TWO STEVIES

MCLAREN AND BRUCE - THE LUCKIEST MEN ALIVE

ENGLAND

STEVE McClaren has been unable to explain how he came to be managing a football club again, after he was reappointed as Derby County boss this week, despite a track record that could be described politely as ‘mixed’. The former England and Newcastle disappointment said: “I am delighted and baffled to be given another opportunity to show the people of Derby what I can do, and perhaps more pertinently, what I can’t. I sent in the same application as in 2013, which conveniently left out my first spell at Derby County. They asked about the gap in my CV and I explained I’d been at a Dutch language school in Utrecht, which seemed to satisfy them.” McClaren said that he hoped to steer Derby towards promotion before leaving for a bigger club, ballsing it up, and returning to Pride Park in 2019. Rams fan Nikki Sheridan said: “As the old saying goes, better the devil you know than Neil Warnock.”

Left: Steve Bruce fails to hide his relief at getting the Villa job rather than the England one

Meanwhile Steve Bruce has spoken of his feelings at having taken over at beleaguered Championship club Aston Villa. “It’s a difficult job, if I’m honest,” he said. “We’re two points above the relegation zone, I don’t really see any way back up to the Premiership this season, or even next, and the fans are going to despise me because of my Birmingham City connections. But really, no matter how bad it seems, it’s just a relief not to be the England manager.”

Bruce has twice in recent months been named as one of the favourites to take over the national team. “It’s been a difficult time for me and my family, if I’m honest. I mean, the England job? No one wants to be associated with that.” He also spoke of his plans for Villa. “Just to hang on until after they’ve replaced Gareth is the main plan. I mean, he’s got, what, four games in charge, he’s had two so the next ones must be middle of November. He’ll get the boot for either playing Rooney or not playing Rooney, so I’ve just got to make sure I’m still at Villa for all that Merry-go-round and they can settle on poor old Eddie Howe rather than me.” Gareth Southgate was too busy sobbing in the corner to give a comment.
