the importance of being litter free

hua hin, THAILAND Before we begin this front page about rubbish in Hua Hin, we’d like to call for a round of applause for the people who are really doing something about it - the Trash Heroes, who have been working solidly, every Sunday, to keep the beaches of the area free of rubbish. You can find out more about them and how you can help via their Facebook page at trashherohuahin. While Trash Hero will continue their stellar work, which not only helps directly, but in some cases indirectly as the local people nearby learn the benefits of keeping their area clean, the latter needs to spread from the beaches where it is focused, to all other parts of the locality, and change the standard mindset of everyone, so that Hua Hin and it’s environs not only get cleaned up regularly, but stay that way. Everyone will have seen children and adults carelessly toss litter out of a car window, or walking along the street, stubbing a cigarette out with their foot and walking away, and it is this unthinking behaviour that has to change, not only to keep our city beautiful and clean, but also from a safety perspective. Piles of litter develop in certain places, as they get pushed there by wind or just become a dumping point, and these could be ideal locations to conceal something that none of us want to see again, small explosive devices. They are also a potential fire hazard, especially in the long dry and hot months, and along with the litter seen strewn along highways and byways, railway tracks and canals, are an eyesore that could be so easily avoided. We encourage everyone to set the right example to our friends and neighbours, and particularly children, by doing the right thing and picking up and disposing of rubbish responsibly. Lets make Hua Hin the cleanest place in Thailand!

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Swan song A final gesture or performance, given before dying or retirement. This term derived from the legend that, while they are mute during the rest of their lives, swans sing beautifully and mournfully just before they die. This isn’t actually the case - swans, even the inaccurately named Mute Swans, have a variety of vocal sounds and they don’t sing before they die. The legend was known to be false as early as the days of ancient Rome, when Pliny the Elder refuted it in Natural History, AD 77: “Observation shows that the story that the dying swan sings is false.” Nevertheless, poetic imagery proved to be more attractive than scientific method and many poets and playwrights made use of the fable long after Pliny’s observations. Chaucer included this line in the poem Parliament of Fowles: The Ialous swan, ayens his deth that singeth. [The jealous swan, sings before his death] Shakespeare, the Swan of Avon no less, used the image in The Merchant of Venice, 1596:

The actual term ‘swan song’, with its current figurative meaning, doesn’t crop up in print until the 18th century. The Scottish cleric Jon Willison used the expression in one of his Scripture Songs, 1767, where he refers to “King David’s swan-song”. The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) turned the phrase on its head in the poem On a Volunteer Singer: Swans sing before they die; ’twere no bad thing Did certain persons die before they sing. If people ever did believe in the ‘singing before death’ story, few would now claim to do so. ‘Swan-song’ is now used figuratively and most commonly to refer to celebrated performers embarking on ‘farewell tours’ or ‘final performances’. Those ironic quote marks were never more appropriate than in the case of Nellie Melba, whose swan song consisted of an eight year long string of ‘final concerts’ between 1920 and 1928. This led to the popular Australian phrase - ‘more farewells than Nellie Melba’. Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Email it to us on submissions@awolonline.net

Portia: Let music sound while he doth make his choice; then, if he lose, he makes a swan-like end, fading in music.

The Pope Is Unwell The Pope had become very ill and was taken to many doctors, all of whom could not figure out how to cure him. Finally he was brought to an old physician. After about an hour’s examination he came out and told the cardinals that he had some good news and some bad news. The bad news was that the pope had a rare disorder of the testicles. The good news was that all the Pope had to do to be cured, was to have sex. Well, this was not good news to the cardinals, who argued about it at length. Finally they went to the pope with the doctor and explained the situation. After some thought, the Pope stated, ‘I agree, but under four conditions.’ The cardinals were amazed and there arose quite an uproar. Over the noise a single voice asked, ‘And what are the four conditions?’ The room stilled. There was a long pause.... The Pope replied, ‘First the girl must be blind, so that she cannot see with whom she is having sex.’ ‘Second, she must be deaf, so that she cannot hear with

life on mars

how to survive as an alien in thailand

getting on the inter-thingy Computers, laptops, tablets, smart TVs, mobile phones and a variety of other devices are all now capable of connecting to the internet, and have become a staple of life for most people, and particularly expats - once upon a time in the early days of the world wide web, there was one email provider, Hotmail, and even then for travellers it quickly became an essential tool for communicating with back home (often more for those at home of course). Aside from all of the arguments over the security of today’s internet and the devices that connect to it, one of the biggest issues faced on Mars is what happens when your device goes wrong? Hua Hin has improved in terms of shops catering to the repair needs of the technologically challenged over recent years, but it can still be a headache, and the phrase ‘Cannot fix, send to Bangkok’ will often be heard, more so with the larger devices than phones, and even then the cost of the repair may often be close to the cost of a new device (particularly Apple devices but others too). This is probably not exclusive to Thailand, but unless you live in Bangkok it is often a long process

without your device. In Hua Hin this will frequently lead people to go to one of the unofficial repair shops, and while many of them are competent and will get your device working again, there is rarely much guarantee that this will continue for very long, and always a danger that they will make the problem worse. Even buying new devices is somewhat limited outside of the capital, although again this has improved in recent years, but buyers should beware the cut price deals on certain items such as TVs, as it is often the case that these are end of line items that will be even harder to get fixed further down the line due to outdated components. Some are good deals though, and you should always push for a further discount as these are normally easily achieved on such items. Send your comments or suggestions for this column to us at submissions@awolonline.net (Subject/Title ‘Life On Mars’) or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ AWOLexpat (please Like our page as well!)

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas keeping up with the camerons How the mighty have fallen. After failing to turn up at the Tory party conference, ‘just call me Dave’ Cameron had a very scaled down 50th birthday party last weekend. The original plans for a grand bash at Chequers were made before the EU referendum, but instead Dave opted for a quiet dinner party at the home of one of his very wealthy property owning chums. And if reports are to be believed it was just a buffet for a couple of dozen guests. I always thought that ex Prime Ministers were very much in demand for book deals and after dinner speeches. Some even end up working for the EU, although in Daves’ case that could be a bit embarrassing. But if times are already proving to be hard for the Camerons they could at least have been seen to support the economy by going to their local Toby Carvery. They might even have enjoyed the frozen sprouts enough to decide to have Christmas lunch there as well. Speaking of which there are just 73 days left until Christmas, and as usual British shoppers are being urged to order their new furniture for delivery in time for the big event. This annual seasonal advertising campaign must work for retailers, or they wouldn’t bother with it. But would you really want to have that beautiful new three piece suite and carpet just in time for the onslaught of family and friends, at the very time when the risks of food and wine spillage are at their peak? Still, a lot of people clearly do, apart from the Camerons who are thought to be waiting for the January sales. How is your English? I thought my O level English had served me well over the years until I came across the following - ‘voiced dental nonsibilant fricative’, and had to turn to my Oxford English dictionary for help. It turns out that it roughly translates as the sound we make

when pronouncing ‘th’ in the English language, and the way we make it. A sound which we use a lot both at the beginning and end of many words. But linguists at York University have predicted that the ‘th’ sound will disappear from use in London in the next 50 years. To be fair dere prediction could easily have been based on many uver UK cities, but it seems dat dee change will begin in London due to its’ multicultural society, before spreading to uver areas, (and I really can’t keep this up any longer) before traditional dialects die out and all morph into what the linguists refer to as the ‘speech of urban centres.’ Is that just a polite way to say common? The news might come as a relief to Thai people who struggle with English pronounciation, but doesn’t bode well for the way native English speakers could pronounce Thailand in the future. Although it does help to explain why we pronounce Thailand as we do. Just 50 years ago, on October 14th 1966, 175 US planes carried out a bombing raid on North Vietnam as part of Operation Rolling Thunder, which was aimed at reducing the infiltration of South Vietnam by the Viet Cong and their supply of new recruits. And on that same day US Defence Secretary McNamara sent a memo to President Johnson expressing his disillusionment with the war effort. In his memo McNamara admitted that Operation Rolling Thunder had done some good, but at a huge cost, and had not succeeded in breaking the morale of the enemy. He concluded that the war must be fought and won by the Vietnamese themselves. Four and a half years later the last US combat troops left South Vietnam. 15

Both teams are in good form and we think this clash will be decided by the defences, as in which is least worst! We are taking Liverpool to score more than the Red Devils on this occasion. fantasy premier league

hair today, don tomorrow Trump to become new England manager

england Following a disastrous couple of weeks in his campaign to become the next President of the USA, it has emerged that Donald Trump will be unveiled as the next England manager as early as this Saturday, the FA has confirmed. After Sam Allardyce was sacked for listing Wembley Stadium on eBay, the England squad is to become known as Trumpland Raiders FC. Trump said: “That guy Sam hadn’t got them a game in, like, four weeks. Sad. And the next guy, Gary Gatemouth or whatever the hell his name is, he only just beat Malta and escaped with a goalless draw against some Eastern European team! I mean, they are as bad as the Miami Dolphins. But with me they will be playing every single day. Twice on Saturdays, you better believe me. “I have all the best football people, just the greatest. Ask Pele. Ask that gay-looking guy married to the singer, they’ll all tell you.” England players met the bullish university

24

Left: It is believed that Trump’s backroom staff will be largely made up of Ooompa Loompas and Trolls creator last night, with striker Wayne Rooney immediately bonding with the new manager over hair-sculpting regimes. The squad for next month’s qualifying match against Scotland will be selected by pitting them against each other in a series of tests including running a pop-up bagel stand and launching a new type of men’s fragrance. Trump said: “We’re gonna go to Russia and we’re just gonna take the World Cup before a ball is kicked, I can totally make that happen.”
