social Victor’s life helping hua hin back on it’s feet

hua hin, THAILAND The months of September and October in the Hua Hin area are normally among the quietest times for local businesses, notably bars, restaurants, guesthouses and hotels, and this year, following some disastrous events that have stunted tourism, the streets in the centre of the town are frequently empty. Efforts are being made on many sides to help everyone one through this rough patch, notably the Soi Binthabaht evening pedestrianisation, and added this week, the Soi 80 Wednesday night walking street. Both these areas also have regular pool league nights, the recently started Hua Hin Soi 80 Tuesday Pool League, and the Hua Hin Social Pool League. The latter of these has just finished their season, and is the longest running pool league in the area, formed in 2008 as an offshoot of the original Hua Hin pool league, which split due to the number of teams and geographical area covered. They are holding an end of season presentation party this coming Wednesday from 8pm at the All Nations Guesthouse, where they will also be accepting new teams to join the league, so anyone who is interested, or would just like a fun night out should come along. Details of all the local leagues can be found on pages 19 through to 22. Supporting local leagues, events and parties like this, as well as regularly patronising the local food and drink establishments is all part of helping everybody move on, and making Hua Hin the vibrant place it has been in the past, and will be again. There is always something going on, and many regular events, most of which can be found in our Balloon Chasers section on page 18, and if you have a special offer, event or party going on it’s free to have it published in AWOL, so tell us about it! Contact us on submissions@ awolonline.net or send a message on Facebook (AWOL Expat).

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 Remember: There’s no use in kicking and screaming and crying all day long. They’re going to change your diaper when they get to it. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 Everyone would stop telling you to keep your hands to yourself, if they only knew what you did with them. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 They say the children are our future. However, what they fail to mention is that it’s a post-apocalyptic future, where the blood of small infants will be used to feed our giant man-machine overlords. aries Mar 21 – Apr 20 Sometimes in life, you just need to stop whatever it is you’re doing and take a step back. Actually, maybe it’s two steps back. Yeah, that’s good. Keep going. The stars will let you know when you’re far enough.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 Sure, they’re quite festive-looking, and they certainly help to spread holiday cheer, but maybe it’s time you got those antlers checked. Gemini May 22 – June 21 Remember: Don’t let any man ever tell you what to do. Or who to do it to. Or what the hell they’re even talking about in the first place. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 The game of soccer, when played with skill and grace, is like poetry in motion. Which explains all the bored-stiff people just pretending to follow along. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 You’ll popularize a new dance craze this week, thanks in large part to the large, feral raccoon clawing at your back.

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Virgo is often known for its stubborn and headstrong nature. Yes, it is. Yes, it fucking is. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 You’re about to enter a strange upside-down universe, one where white is black, black is white, and people don’t need to remind you when to chew. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 Doctors will refuse to operate on you this week, not due to any moral dilemmas, or matters of economics, or even health-related fears. They’re just vindictive bastards. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 You’ve never worked a day in your life, though that’s mainly because you keep getting the damn graveyard shift.

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Dash to pieces Break into fragments. Many English phrases are found first in either the Bible or the works of Shakespeare. ‘Dash to pieces’ appears to be a close run race between the two. The Coverdale Bible, 1535, in Psalms 2.9, has: Thou shalt rule them with a rodde of yron, and breake them in peces like an erthen vessell. ‘Dash’ was a commonly used verb in the 16th century meaning variously ‘crash up against’, as in rain splashing against a window, or ‘destroy utterly’. Shakespeare brought both meanings together in the first known usage of ‘dash to pieces’, in The Tempest, 1610: A brave vessel, who had, no doubt, some noble creature in her, dash’d all to pieces. The biblical scholars who in 1610 were working on the King James Bible (1611) converted Coverdale’s ‘breake them in peces’ to ‘dash them in pieces’: Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. There may yet be a steward’s enquiry but this one does seem to be ‘coined by Shakespeare’ - by a nose.

Incidentally, the ‘splattering of rain’ meaning of dash is also the origin of the term dashboard, which was originally the frontice board of a carriage, placed there to stop mud and rain splashing the occupants. tarzan When Jane first met Tarzan in the jungle she was attracted to him and, during her questions about his life, she asked him how he had sex. “Tarzan not know sex,” he replied. Jane explained to him what sex was. Tarzan said, “Oh ....Tarzan use hole in trunk of tree.” Horrified, Jane said, “Tarzan, you have it all wrong, but I will show you how to do it properly.” She took off her clothing and lay down on the ground. “Here,” she said, pointing to her privates, “you must put it in here.” Tarzan removed his loin cloth, stepped closer to her, and kicked her in the crotch! Jane rolled around in agony for what seemed like an eternity. Eventually she managed to gasp for air, and screamed, “What did you do that for?!” Tarzan replied, “Tarzan always check for squirrels first”.

Sitting in a bar down under, still wearing their touques and flannels they draw the attention of Aussies, so one gets up and approaches them. “G’DAY mates, where you blokes from?” “Saskatoon, Saskatchewan” one of them answers. “Oh, alright. “ replies the Aussie as he returns to his table. “So where are they from mate?” His friend asks. “Don’t know, they don’t speak English.”

how to survive as an alien in thailand

the social stuff Expats are a funny lot, not least in the fact that many will leave their home country for the reason that they are disenchanted with their fellow countrymen, and yet will generally have a tendency to congregate with people from their own country once they arrive in their new ‘home’. In Thailand this will often be driven by language; most new arrivals, actually most expats full stop, struggle with the Thai language, and there is a natural inclination for people to drift towards those with a similar language and culture; it is also true that there are a few who totally immerse themselves in Thailand, moving ‘up country’ and generally doing better at learning Thai, but even they have a need for the company of those who speak their language and understand their cultural roots. In Hua Hin there is no better example of this drift than the local sports leagues, notably pool, which are generally dominated by foreigners in both participation and organisation; they do, however, generally welcome Thai players, and thus do serve as a bridge to both serve the need to gather with fellow expats and making new Thai friends.

Such regular gatherings also serve as a ‘safety check’, which at home would occur with family, friends and neighbours automatically - noticing that the mail or milk hadn’t been taken in, dustbins not put out etc, and thus triggering concern, but those examples aren’t really the kind of thing that would happen here; but if a regular player fails to appear at a scheduled match this has the same reaction of checking on their welfare. With so many older expats in Hua Hin than is found in other places in Thailand, and with so many people living on their own, it is thus important for expats and aliens to engage in regular organised activities, not only for the pleasure that can be derived from them, but more seriously their physical and mental well being. An extra side benefit, as noted on this week’s front page, is that it also helps to support local businesses, many of whom are having a hard time right now Send your comments or suggestions for this column to us at submissions@awolonline.net (Subject/Title ‘Life On Mars’) or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ AWOLexpat (please Like our page as well!)

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas flower girls If you saw that press photo of an alleged theft in progress from a tourist in Chiang Mai, what was your first thought? First, for those who missed it, the picture appeared in many countries on around September 27th, showing a female tourist posing with two Hmong children, one of whom was holding the hand of the tourist while fingering her watch. It was reported that the tourist realised later that her watch was missing, and on seeing her holiday photos assumed that the child had stolen it. When posted online other ‘victims’ came forward, with comments such as ‘adorable thieves,’ and ‘an organised gang’. Allegations since refuted by the mother of the little girl as well as by her village elder. My immediate reaction was, probably wrongly, ‘well done kid’, because we know only too well that many children like that 7 year old Hmong girl are taught how to make a living for their adults from an early age. This was closely followed by dismay at the bad publicity caused for Thailand, and later by memories of a flower girl in Pattaya I once knew. A few of you may have heard the story of ‘10 baht’ before, but for the sake of all of Thailands’ street kids it bears repeating. If only to show that hopefully not all, but at least some of those children are the real victims. ‘10 baht’ was a flower seller of around 7 or 8 years old, who wandered the sois of Pattaya day and night some 17 years ago. I never saw her with an adult Thai. She would just appear with her roses reciting her chant of ‘10 baht’, sometimes stopping to watch farang playing pool or darts, sometimes accepting our offers of street food and soft drinks. One of those children who understood that expats rarely bought her flowers, and was never any trouble. Who could often be seen using a public toilet and always leaving her few baht fee in the pot on her way out. At that time I had an interest in a guest house in one of those town houses off Pattayas’ Beach Road, and with no rear or side entrance our shutters were open 24/7 for guests to come and go. Then one night during rainy season there was a particularly bad storm. The soi was deserted, the bar empty, when 10 baht appeared outside in her flimsy dress, drenched with rain, clearly one very distressed little girl. She needed a little encouragement at first to lie down on a sofa, where she shivered and cried, but couldn’t explain what was wrong. It was only when we put a blanket over her that I realised from her reaction what had happened, because she instinctively put her hands over herself where she had been abused.

Needless to say 10 baht stayed and slept for a while, before wandering off again into the dark. One very special little girl, but sadly one of many. I often wonder what became of her. Before you reach for the Prozac let’s get back to Hull, and preparations for its’ City of Culture year in 2017. The formal presentation of what to expect next year was held recently in the city, attracting the usual gathering of interested parties which included the Director General of the BBC. His job was to announce that during the whole of 2017 Hull would appear on every national BBC weather map, an idea which was very well received. Especially as Manchester never gets a look in on the weather maps at all, because its’ name is too long. But it didn’t all go so well. For some reason that no one seems to understand the event was also attended by a lady from The Lady magazine - one of those upmarket publications rarely seen lying around in Hulls’ hairdressing salons. Unfortunately the canapes at the event didn’t meet with the approval of the lady from The Lady, and her day only got worse when she fell over on a guided tour of Hulls’ regenerated areas, leaving her in A and E. Some say she just tripped, which was probably a cover story for wobbly paving stones. Interviewed the following day on local radio the lady was forgiving and gracious, as one would expect from a person of such standing. But I hope that a lesson has been learned by the powers that be - next time there is a ‘bit of a do’ stick to food which reflects Hulls’ cultural heritage. Patty and chips will do nicely.

“Steve Tyler, who played for the Squealing Pig pool team on Wednesdays and Thursdays, sadly passed away on Tuesday morning 4th October following a heart attack. Steve was only 62 and condolences go to his wife Carol and his family. Steve was a thoroughly likable and friendly person as well as a very good pool player and this loss has came as a shock. RIP Steve.”

ryder shame for brits European golfers demand immediate Brexit

UK European golfers have insisted it is time to ditch these British losers and expressed delight at Theresa May’s announcement that Britain would trigger Article 50 in March 2017. “Hopefully those useless Brits will have gone by the time the next Ryder Cup comes around,” Henrik Stenson is rumoured to have said. British players managed a total of zero points from a possible seven on the final day of the tournament, while those from mainland Europe took four and a half from a possible five. Many European sports fans in bars and cafes across the European continent were swift in their calls for Brexit following the repeated failures of the British players. “Sure we lost, but this was one of the funniest nights of my life watching the Brits fail so spectacularly,” said Pedro Lopez.

“My blind grandmother could have done better with a baguette and a clove of garlic.” said a Frenchman as he cycled by, “I mean, it’s just hitting a little ball with a stick, it’s not that hard is it?” The Daily Mail has blamed the EU for the catastrophe, claiming that the Brits were sabotaged by EU legislation. “First they straightened our bananas, now they bend our golf clubs!” the screamed in an editorial. Meanwhile, the Scottish government has been quick to point out that no Scottish players were involved in the carnage and that, “Please can we still be a part of your team… pleease!”
