hua hin food festival now on hua hin, THAILAND Another annual event is taking place this month, earlier than last year, as the Hua Hin Food Festival began this week, and is running until the end of the month. Last year’s event took place during September, so the change in date may catch some people out - it is normally a very well attended festival, and well worth visiting. It will be highlighting a wide variety of local food and international delicacies cooked by professional chefs from participating hotels and restaurants in Hua Hin and Cha-am. Visitors will get the chance to taste a very special menu created for this event – the 88 pans of hot and spicy fried rice with fresh seafood. There will also be a showcase of professional skills from talented kitchen staff in a series of competitions, including ice carving, vegetable and fruit carving, as well as cooking. In addition, there are free evening mini concerts by leading Thai singers. Shops and stalls from local clubs and associations will also be lining the streets, selling tasty dishes at reasonable prices. The location for the event is at The Queen’s Park (19 Rai), accessible from both Sois 19 and 35, with the latter being the traffic light controlled turning next to the Klai Kang Won Palace. For anyone who is new to this area, this is also where the immigration office is located currently. The park is a lovely beachside retreat which has a children’s playground and car parking, although the popularity of the event will probably mean that finding parking space there will be difficult in the evenings, and traffic, particularly at weekends, will make it better to travel there either by foot or in public transport or taxi/tuk tuk. For more information on the event, please contact the Hua Hin Municipality on 032 511047, 032 511347, or 032 532433, or TAT Call Center 1672.

The CRS derivation is dubious at best, and I can find no documentary evidence to link it to ‘bottle out’. A more likely source is the earlier slang phrase ‘not much bottle’, or ‘no bottle’, that is, ‘useless; no good for anything’. This usage is recorded in a glossary of 19th century street English slang The Swell’s Night Guide, 1846: “She thought it would be no bottle, cos her rival could go in a buster.” The phrase continued in use in the 20th century and certainly overlapped with the first known example in print of ‘bottle out’, that is, the BBC magazine The Listener, March 1979: “This is the big crime, for them: if they are informers or if they don’t have the courage to do a crime. leprechaun A man is golfing in Ireland. On the last hole he hits it into the rough. After a brief search for his ball, he finds it next to a small man wearing a green suit, lying prone upon the ground. He gently shakes the man, rousing him, and the little man jumps to his feet. In a think Irish brogue, the tiny man exlaims “Ye caught me, ye lucky devil! I be a Leprechaun and in exchange for letting me go, I’ll grant ye three wishes!” The golfer, looks down at the Leprechaun and replies, “No wishes necessary, I’m just glad you are alright.” The golfer takes a swing, hits his ball into the sandtrap, nods his cap at the little fellow and takes his leave to finish his disappointing round. The Leprechaun thinks to himself, “What a lovely man. I think I’ll grant him my own three wishes: a great golf game, fabulous wealth and a fantastic rapport with the ladies!” A year later the golfer is on another golfing trip, playing the exact same hole. He hits a long drive and sinks his fourth hole in one for the round. He reaches into the cup and then sees the Leprechaun standing next to him. They give their salutations and then the leprechaun asks, “How’s the golf game?” “Great! You saw that hole in one right? I’ve even won a few tournaments for charity!” exclaimed the golfer. “And your financial situation?” The little man in green continued. “It seems like I pull out a thousand Euros every time I put my hands in my pocket.” replied the golfer. “Nice! And how’s the ol’ sex life?” leered the Leprechaun. “Once or twice a month.” stated the golfer. “Only once or twice a month?!” echoed the exasperated little gent. The priest shrugged and responded, “It’s a small parish.”

The card reads: “Hello, I am deaf and mute. May I play through?” The wife nods her head and looks to her husband. The husband, in a series of gestures and pantomimes explains that he is shooting the best game of his life, and doesn’t want to mess up his rhythm. Looking rather disheartened, the lone golfer retrieved his card and walked away from the couple. The wife asked her husband “Why did you lie to him? You’re shooting like crap today!” The husband replied “I’m just tired of Handicapped people who think they are better than everyone else! He can wait his turn!” The couple continued with their game, and a few holes later, the husband is setting up to drive when he takes a golf ball to the temple, knocking him out cold. The wife looks back, and sees the deaf and mute golfer rushing towards them, holding up 4 fingers. spelling? A teacher calls her first grade class from recess. and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas bound for trouble As athletes have been training for this years’ Olympic Games, soldiers in South Korea have found an alternative way to keep on their toes. Guarding the demilitarised zone which separates North from South Korea has been a constant job since the Korean War, and the border is said to be the most heavily fortified in the world. Guarding it is tense and stressful, but while some front line soldiers play football to chill out, others have taken up ballet. Once a week around 15 conscripts take to the barre to practice their plies under the guidance of a ballerina from the Korean National Ballet. They say that it helps them stay calm, as well as building strength and friendships, which does make sense, but I can’t really see the idea catching on in the British army. As you gather around your big screens for two weeks of relentless sport let’s take a look back to August 5th 1901, when an Irishman named Peter O’Connor set a new long jump record of 24 feet 11.75 inches. (We didn’t have metric then!) But the interesting thing is that as far as long jump goes things don’t seem to have progressed much compared to other track and field events. The current world record of 29 feet 4.25 inches has been held by American Mike Powell for the last 25 years an overall increase of just 4 feet 5 inches, or about 1.3 meters since O’Connors’ record 115 years ago. But Powell has not been best pleased by suggestions from the UK athletics campaign to clean up the sport. The campaign includes the idea of scrapping all previous records and starting again from scratch, in order to eliminate any records which may have been set with a little medicinal help. The folks at the Guinness Book of Records will probably agree with Powell. Still on the subject of sport, have you heard the latest UK Government initiative? Actually this is a move by some Local Authorities, (who do still rely a lot on Government funding, albeit from a rapidly reducing pot), but not surprisingly their ideas are supported by the Department for Education. The initiative addresses problems faced by transgender school pupils when taking part in PE lessons. In particular those who are changing gender from female to male, who often bind their developing chests to prevent embarrassing wobbling during sports. While I can understand that embarrassment to some extent - let’s face it - it doesn’t only affect transgender school girls - the practice of chest binding sounds almost as barbaric as that old Chinese custom of binding feet. And it can apparently lead to breathing and skeletal problems, which is where that ever present duty of

care comes in, because schools now need to allow transgender girls more breaks during PE lessons if they are observed to be in distress. Gender Dysphoria is a recognised medical condition, and an increasing number of children are known to be affected by it. The distress caused by physical changes in the bodies of those affected is taken seriously, and in the UK children who feel trapped in the wrong body can be offered hormone therapy when they reach puberty, to help delay unwanted physical changes. So surely it would be more sensible for doctors, therapists, and parents, who all also have a duty of care, to point out the risks involved in chest binding, and encourage girls to use a less restrictive form of control? In fact is it beyond the abilities of any parent to provide something like a comfortably fitting sports bra with adapted cups? Or will transgender school girls continue to be embarrassed not by their shape, but by that extra time sitting on the side lines. It will come as no surprise to learn that as well as those extra breaks, school toilets also come under scrutiny in at least two Local Authority areas, with calls for transgender pupils to be allowed to use toilets which match their gender identity, rather than their physical identity. Even better would be ‘gender neutral’ toilets, as preferred by University students. That’s same sex toilets to you and me. Given that many UK public loos now employ men to clean in the territory of the Ladies it probably won’t be long before all toilets are unisex anyway. After all we share them in our homes and on planes and trains etc. But please - come that day equip all cubicles with their own wash basin, mirror, hand dryer and posh soap. And by the way make them sound proof as well.

We will be running the AWOL Challenge Fantasy League again this season, but some technical glitches on the Fantasy League website have meant that so far we have been unable to log in and set the league up again. We are working with the website to try to sort these problems out but if all else fails we may have to create a new account and set up a new league from scratch. Please follow our Facebook Page (AWOLExpat) for updates on the situation, but to be sure you are added to the league in case we need to set up a new account, please send an email to us from the email address you use for the Fantasy Premier League with your team name as set up on the website for the new season. If we are able to access our original account, teams that were in previous seasons will be added automatically unless the system has been altered, but if it has been, we will have the full list from previous seasons and will be able to notify players. We will print full details of the new Fantasy League in next week’s AWOL, as well as posting to our Facebook page with what has happened and is happening.

football gossip

Leicester City have given unlimited transfer funds to manager Claudio Ranieri as he looks to strengthen his squad for their Premier League title defence. (Sun) Arsenal will not let 26-year-old Kieran Gibbs go on loan to Premier League rivals West Ham, who want an experienced left-back to cover for the injured Aaron Cresswell. (Sun) The Hammers are also considering a £7m move for 31-year-old Germany striker Mario Gomez, who says he wants to leave Besiktas because of the political situation in Turkey. (Daily Mirror) Chelsea have told Everton that their next bid for striker Romelu Lukaku, 23, will be a takeit-or-leave-it offer. The Blues sold Lukaku to Everton two years ago and Everton are adamant they will not sell for less than £75m. (The Times - subscription required) Swansea’s Wales international captain Ashley Williams, 31, is on the brink of a £10m move to Everton. (South Wales Evening Post) Meanwhile, the Swans are ready to step up their interest in Tottenham winger Nacer Chadli, 26, and Leicester striker Leonardo Ulloa, 30. (Daily Mirror)

Manchester United’s former Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, 32, has been training with the club’s under-23 squad as speculation about his future continues. (Manchester Evening News) Hull City aim to conclude their search for a successor to Steve Bruce as manager by midweek, but will face stiff resistance if they pursue their interest in Wales boss Chris Coleman. (Hull Daily Mail) However, the Tigers are also considering former Chelsea forward and West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola. (Daily Star) Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is likely to be played in a central role, behind the Blues’ main striker, by new manager Antonio Conte. (Daily Mail) Stoke boss Mark Hughes says he wanted to experiment with wing-backs to make his players more tactically flexible for the new season. (Stoke Sentinel)

Pokemon Go to replace golf at Rio Olympics

brazil Following a number of top golfers pulling out of the Rio games, organisers have decided to cut the sport from the Olympics and replace it with Pokemon Go. “It is clear that the introduction of golf into the games has not been welcome,” said an Olympics official, after yet another golfer announced they would not be travelling to Rio. “So, it seems the sensible thing to do is to introduce a sport that has proved universally popular; Pokemon Go.” Top Pokemon Go players like that spotty bloke from IT and little Suzie from next door are already in training to try and make the games. However, they will have to deal with strict new tournament rules. “No Pokemon gyms, only Pokemon caught in the arena will be scored, and there will be regular checks to make sure that no one

Left: Pikachus have already started arriving in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the games, following the announcement interferes with the competitor’s Pokeballs,” said the official. Rory McIlroy reiterated his very clear view on the introduction of golf to the Olympics. He told reporters, “I don’t believe that the Olympic Games should or needs to introduce these non-traditional sports like golf, they cheapen the ethos of the games, and I’ll have nothing to do with it.” There was a brief pause while Mr McIlroy was told of the latest developments. “What? Are they doing Pokemon Go? I’m brilliant at that, I’ve just caught a Jigglepuff. “Balls to the Zika virus, get me on that plane.”
