Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 There are certain species of bear which mind their own business and don’t attack or eat humans. You will not meet any such bears this week. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 Don’t let pessimism or negativity get in your way this week, as you already have a hard enough time not always messing everything up on your own. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 You establish a destructive pattern of behavior this week when you discover how much fun it is to destroy things. aries Mar 21 – Apr 20 You may not have a lot of money, but you still believe yourself to be rich in many ways. This isn’t surprising considering the cost of a proper education these days.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 The lion shall lay down with the lamb this week, before looking around, realizing no saviour has in fact returned, and ripping out the poor, unsuspecting animal’s throat. Gemini May 22 – June 21 The difference between life and death can come down to a few precious minutes, or in your case, the time it takes for the EMTs to finally stop laughing. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 You’ll have a terrifying out-of-body experience this week, followed by an even more horrifying back-inside-yourbody experience this week. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 It takes a lot of courage to stand up and speak candidly in front of a large group of people. Especially when those people are just there to watch KISS.

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Virgos are known for their submissive nature, weak and cowardly attitude, and tendency to just sit there and nod along while the stars openly defecate all over them. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 While it’s true that drugs aren’t the answer to your problem, they will, if taken in large enough doses, make you forget exactly what your problems are. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 You’ve managed to overcome a lot in order to become a senior marketing manager, primarily your hopes, aspirations, and dreams. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 Pretty soon you’re going to have to sit down and ask yourself some very important questions. Particularly, “why?”

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. Canadian newspaper, The British Colonist, 1858: This week it is..... High time The time that something is due (bordering on overdue) “The Johns had a high time, drinking brandy and to be done. For example, “It’s beginning to get dark. It’s high time eating fried hog.” we got started on putting up the tent”. A high time like to know more about? Email it to us on submissions@awolonline.net was had by all”. This phrase has also been used to mean ‘a heated argument’, but that meaning is unused and archaic now. ‘High time’ derives from the allusion to the warmest time of day - when the sun is highest in the sky. She that doth call me husband, even my soul Doth for a wife abhor. But her fair sister, Possess’d with such a gentle sovereign grace, Of such enchanting presence and discourse, Hath almost made me traitor to myself: But, lest myself be guilty to self-wrong, I’ll stop mine ears against the mermaid’s song. ‘A high time’ or ‘High times’ comes from the same root as ‘high days and holidays’, that is, days of religious note and festivals. High in that sense has been used in English since the middle ages, although there are few references to it in print until the 19th century, as in this from the

tapeworm A man was having some stomach pains, so he went to see his doctor. The doctor looked him over and declared, “Sir, you have a tapeworm. Please come back in three days, and bring... a banana.” The man is confused, but he trusts the doctor so he returns in three days with a banana. The doctor tells the man to take off his pants and bend over, whereupon the doctor... introduces the banana into the man’s system. The man is shocked. The doctor says, “Excellent job. Now please come back in three days with another banana.” The man trusts his doctor, so in three days he returns with another banana. The doctor again asks the man to remove his pants and again he... introduces the banana... into the man’s system. The man is extremely confused, but his stomach pains aren’t as bad anymore so he will continue to follow his doctor’s orders. The doctor says, “Great job. Now please come back in three days with... a hammer.” The man returns with a hammer three days later. He is extremely confused, and quite concerned, but upon seeing the doctor he receives his instructions. “Please take off your pants and lie on your side on the examination table,” says the doctor. The man lays there for a few minutes with his rear end bare. The doctor breathlessly grips the hammer and waits. The tapeworm pops out of the man’s arse, looks at the doctor and says “Hey! Where the hell is my banana?”

A man walks into a bar and really needs to use the toilet, he asks the bartender to use the bathroom and is given directions. He walks in and sees a regular toilet and a gorgeous golden one. So the man plops down on the golden one and has the most glorious dump he’s ever had. The next day he goes into the same bar and does it again, this one being better than the last. The third day he goes in and there’s only the plain white toilet. He walks out and asks the bartender where the gold toilet went. The bartender looks at him and then yells, “Hey Frank, I found the idiot that’s been crapping in your tuba!” Bad news, good news, really great news The day after his wife disappeared in a kayaking accident in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia, a man answered his door to find two grim-faced Mounties. “We know it’s late, sir, but we have some information about your wife,” said one of the Mounties. “Tell me! Did you find her!?” the husband shouted. The Mounties looked at each other. One said, “We have some bad news, some good news, and some really great news. Which do you want to hear first?” Fearing the worst, the ashen husband said “Give me the bad news first.” The second Mountie said, “I’m sorry to tell you, sir, but this morning we found your wife’s body in the bay.” “Oh my God!” exclaimed the husband. Swallowing hard, he asked, “What’s the good news?” The Mountie continued, “When we pulled her up, she had 6 twenty-five pound snow crabs and 12 good-size lobsters clinging to her.” Stunned, the husband demanded, “If that’s the good news, what’s the great news???” The Mountie answered, “We’re gonna pull her up again tomorrow”.

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas the lexicon of love? Anyone listening to last weeks speech by Ivanka Trump, in support of her fathers bid to become the next US President, could be forgiven for becoming carried away by her praise and enthusiasm. While Trump opponents have called him, amongst other things, a bully and narcissist, Ivanka exuded praise for her fathers humanity, along with his fairness, business acumen, and principles. It was a well delivered speech which didn’t appear to plagiarise anything said previously by Mrs Obama, and so sincere that you had to shake yourself to remember that not only was she talking about her father, but also about her employer and the empire in which she has a vested interest. Meanwhile those opponents who accuse Trump of narcissism cite the way in which his name is emblazoned large on Trump Towers and his private helicopter. You have to wonder whether Mrs Trump also bears that mark of ownership. Perhaps in the form of a tattoo? While you ponder the best place for someone to have the word ‘trump’ tattooed let’s take a look at what was happening on July 29th 1981. That was the day when the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer grabbed world attention. It was also a good day in Britain as we were given the day off as an extra bank holiday, which in the summer is nothing to be sneezed at. Of course we know how it all ended, but even the death of Diana now seems to be in the dim and distant past. Even her burial place, on a private island in a lake at her childhood home, is said to have become neglected and overgrown. But not for much longer. The latest mistress of Althorp Hall, Lady Karen, who married Dianas’ brother Charles in 2011, is on a mission to modernise the crumbling pile, which will reportedly include smartening up the island. Throw in a few pedalos and that could become a nice little earner. In 1987 July 29th was the day on which Mrs Thatcher and President Mitterrand signed the agreement to build the Channel Tunnel. What a shame that 29 years later holiday makers have been facing 10 hour delays at Dover to get into the thing. Finally, despite having much more pressing things to worry about right now, the UK government has announced that it is to ban all Latin abbreviations from it’s GOV.UK websites. So in the interests of plain English there will be no more CV’s, ie’s, eg’s etc. The list of abbreviations has endless potential, and GOV.UK will have to use lengthy alternatives, not to mention the translations from Latin to English, for things like ‘am’

and ‘pm’, which does seem a bit silly. But we do have a serious problem with migrant workers in important jobs who apparently can’t always understand what is said to them in English, let alone Latin, eg those in the medical profession. The kind of people we wouldn’t want to be confusing their examples with their eggs, or their curriculum vitae with their cardiovasculars. Yet at the same time migrant workers - including many whose first language is English - have to be familiar with the growing raft of workplace jargon for which government is largely responsible. One good example of jargon occurred in a report from a department of the Hull City Council, and had to be queried by a puzzled Councillor. The report contained a reference to ‘handraulic’ work, aka ‘manual’. Now there’s a good one for your CV - Handraulic Worker - it has to be up there with Domestic Management doesn’t it?

all about taking part Terrifying nuclear nation allowed to take part in jumped-up sports day

russia Some reasonable people have worked out that the Olympics aren’t really important enough to get Russia feeling all fighty. The Olympic Committee have taken a look at the consequences of an Olympics made more interesting by some drugs versus the wrath of a nuclear superpower run by a Bond villain. “And we’ve concluded we’re better off with the former,” confirmed committee spokesperson, Simon Williams. “A lot of people think the Olympics is very important to the world at large, and those people are morons. It’s just ridiculously fit people doing really impractical things for three weeks. “So, yeah, there’s not really a whole lot of pride being lost if we let some jacked-up Russians join in the runny-jumpy stuff. “We’re not really up for upsetting Vladimir Putin either. Have you seen him? I bet he

Left: The Olympics Committee remained unconvinced that Russian athletes were drug cheats despite the evidence presented in ‘Rocky 4’ could kill an oak tree.” A spokesperson for Russia said, “This is a good decision not only for the continued survival of the Olympic committee members, but also for the Olympics in general. “Nobody wants to see a discus, javelin or shot putt lobbed a ‘fairly long way’, they want to see it land on the moon. And they want 200 miles per hour tennis serves and 500 yard golf drives. “You try doing that without a big box of drugs. It’s ruddy tricky.”
