murder in cha-am swedish kennel owner gunned down
hua hin, THAILAND The brutal murder of a Swedish man was discovered on Monday morning at an animal kennels and dog training business in Cha Am by one of the staff as they arrived for work. The man had been shot twice with a shotgun, according to reports, in the stomach and the arm. At press time the police had not officially named the man as they had not yet contacted his family. It was estimated that the man had been dead for around 24 hours, and this ties in with reports from neighbours who heard ‘loud bangs’ on Sunday morning. Reports in both Thai and English media, and related social media comments, vary wildly with regard to possible reasons, motives and history behind this murder, but until a suspect is found, charged and either confesses or is tried in court, this is needless speculation that unfortunately always surrounds such events. What the police have apparently said though is that they believe the murder could be related to several ongoing feuds the expat was caught up in, including a conflict with his ex-wife, disputes with neighbours and drunken arguments with local youths. We would like to extend our condolences to this man’s family and many friends. Crimes of this nature against foreigners are not common in the Hua Hin and Cha Am area, although actual statistics are not available; however, whether due to a higher population of foreigners or a larger number of criminals, there are more murders of foreigners in Thailand every year. As noted in previous stories, while it is not known what was the cause of this shooting, it is wise not to get into a confrontational situation with anyone, but particularly Thais, whether over business or personal matters, as it is very easy to unwittingly cause someone to ‘lose face’, and this can often lead to what foreigners will feel is an unwarranted and over the top reaction, but not necessarily an immediate one.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Kick the bucket “Swifter then he that gibbets on the Brewers Bucket.” Meaning: Die. We all know what a bucket is - and so this phrase appears [to gibbet meant to hang] rather odd. Why should kicking one be associated with The wooden frame that was used to hang animals up dying? The link between buckets and death was made by at by their feet for slaughter was called a bucket. Not least 1785, when the phrase was defined in Grose’s unnaturally they were likely to struggle or to spasm after death and hence ‘kick the bucket’. Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue: “To kick the bucket, to die.” One theory as to why, albeit with little evidence to support it, is that the phrase originates from the notion that people hanged themselves by standing on a bucket with a noose around their neck and then kicking the bucket away. There are no citations that relate the phrase to suicide and, in any case, why a bucket? Whenever I’ve needed something to stand on I can’t recall ever opting for a bucket. This theory doesn’t stand up any better than the supposed buckets did. The mist begins to clear with the fact that in 16th century England bucket had an additional meaning (and in some parts it still has), that is, a beam or yoke used to hang or carry items. The term may have been introduced into English from the French trébuchet - meaning a balance, or buque - meaning a yoke. That meaning of bucket was referred to in Peter Levins’ Manipulus vocabulorum. A dictionarie of English and Latine wordes, 1570: “A Bucket, beame, tollo.” and was used by Shakespeare in Henry IV Part II, 1597:

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas driven to drink Just as Mrs Thatchers’ handbags become a dim and distant memory, here comes Theresa May. Centre Stage with her shoes. Much as it pains me to admit it I almost feel sorry for the woman already. Not to mention that some of my own shoes have turned distinctly right wing overnight. Why do media people and fashionistas take such an interest now in how female politicians dress? I can’t recall the same level of interest in Shirley Williams appearance, and in fact admired her for not wasting her time at the hairdresser when there were more important things to do. Mind you it isn’t just the women who have to endure the comments - remember Michael Foot? And Harold Wilsons’ gannex coat? Corbyn and Boris haven’t escaped either. Other recent events have concentrated on commemorating the Battle of the Somme one hundred years ago, so it was interesting to find an account of that time written by a Private Surfleet, who served there in a Hull battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. The 19 year old kept a war diary during his service, in which, on July 21st 1916, he noted ‘There is no wonder those who have a tendency towards drink try to drown their sorrows whenever they get a chance.’ Another diary entry bemoaned the working conditions, in particular the constant demands for ‘carrying parties’ which provoked widespread grousing among the infantry. We can only imagine the kind of things the men were required to carry, as Private Surfleet went on to say that ‘The jobs we get are simply heartbreaking, almost inhumanly impossible, but they have to be done somehow, and I marvel daily that we stick it.’ Little wonder that whenever they got the chance the men would find local establishments where they could spend a few francs on egg and chips, wine and beer. With all the horror stories of the Somme it is good to know

that at least those young soldiers could find some brief respite now and then. Back in 1574 however the people of Hull were actively discouraged from drowning their sorrows in an attempt to curb the gross immoralities which apparently plagued the city. One local vicar at the time was so concerned about the levels of fornication and adultery in the town that he sought advice from the Archbishop of York on how best to deal with offenders. His Grace must have agreed that strong ale was the root of all problems, including the depletion of his congregations, and on July 21st 1574 he sanctioned punishment for those ‘abominable and heinous crimes’. Church Wardens were dispatched to search ale houses and take the names of offenders who were ‘sinfully spending or idly wasting their time’ when they should have been at church. The Archbishop also granted authority to the towns’ Mayor and Aldermen to eradicate the gross immoralities by severe punishment, which could include imprisonment. It would seem that the concept of tea money hadn’t been invented in the 1500’s.

SUNDERLAND has pledged to smash its transfer record to bring in anyone, anyone at all. While other Premier League teams have spent heavily on new signings, Sunderland face being left behind unless they can persuade a player, any player, to sign for them. Club chief executive Martin Bain said: “We’re close to finalising a hugely exciting £30 million transfer that will show we’re a team to be taken seriously. All we need is a player. “If anyone out there wants to play for Sunderland, give us a ring and ask for Martin. We can give you a hundred grand a week and a personal chef. “Just get in touch. Please.” Wolfsburg forward Bas Dost said: “My agent told me a Premier League club were very

interested in me. I asked which Premier League club, and he squirmed a bit and said it was one of the ones that has red in its strip. “Eventually he admitted it was Sunderland, and that playing for Sunderland would involve me living in or near Sunderland. Plus, I may have to do whatever Sam Allardyce told me to and I don’t think I’d be comfortable with that.”
