another foreign death on the roads

hua hin, THAILAND The tragic death last weekend of a Kazakh man, who was hit by a speeding tuk tuk on the pedestrian crossing outside Market Village, highlights once more how dangerous the roads in Hua Hin, and Thailand can be. The man, identified as Mr Mongyen Kobet in reports of the incident, was crossing the road with his wife after shopping in Market Village, and was struck by the tuk tuk in the outside lane on the southbound side, with some reports suggesting that the 48 year old had inadvertently looked the wrong way, while his wife narrowly avoided also being struck. Mr Kobet was attended to quickly by medics but unfortunately died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries, which included severe head trauma caused when his head struck the road. We would like to extend our condolences to his wife, family and friends. Police questioned the 53-year-old tuk tuk driver, Mr Somnuk, who was parked close by and waiting to speak with officers. He admitted hitting the tourist and now faces unspecified charges. The stretch of road where this accident happened is notoriously dangerous for pedestrians, particularly tourists, who are used to more discipline from car drivers and other road users in their own countries when they approach a pedestrian crossing, and while the law is similar in Thailand to most other countries, it’s observation and enforcement is very different. Pedestrians are quite literally ‘running the gauntlet’ when they attempt to cross a road here. Even the installation of pedestrian controlled traffic lights does not appear to be a viable solution, with the one set deployed in the town (outside Bangkok Hospital) routinely ignored by drivers. For now the only advice we have to our readers, and visitors to the town is to cross all roads with extreme caution, and where possible, do so either when all traffic is at a standstill, still looking and listening constantly, or walk the extra distance and use a footbridge.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. gauntlets, either military or horticultural. This week it is..... Run the gauntlet To go through a series of criticisms or harsh treatments The name of the brutal punishment was originally ‘running the gantelope’. Gantlope is an Anglicized at the hands of one’s detractors. We have run this explanation before, but as we have form of the Swedish word ‘gatlop’, or ‘gatu-lop’, which used it on this week’s front page, we thought it apt to refers to the gate of soldiers that the victim had to pass through. The Ist Earl of Shaftsbury recorded the phrase repeat the explanation of it. Gauntlets are familiar to us today as the stout leather in his Diary, 1646: gloves used for gardening and the like. Mediaeval “Three were condemned to die, two to run the gantelope.” gauntlets were made of even sterner stuff. Gauntlets, It didn’t take long for gantlope to migrate into ganlet, or or gantlettes, gauntelotes etc., formed part of suits of gauntlet - possibly as a result of a simple muddle over armour. They were usually covered with plates of steel the similar-sounding words or possibly because of the and were as useful for attack as for defence. When a association with the use of gauntlets as weapons and dispute arose involving a member of the English nobility with the antagonism implicit in ‘throwing down the who was wealthy enough to own his own armour then gauntlet’. he (it was always a he) would literally ‘throw down the The earliest known record of the gantlet form of the gauntlet’ as a challenge. That phrase is first recorded phrase is in Joseph Glanvill’s The Vanity of Dogmatizing, in Hall’s Chronicles of Richard III, 1548: “Makynge a 1661: “To print, is to run the gantlet, and to expose ones proclamacion, that whosoeuer would saie that kynge self to the tongues strapado.” Richard was not lawefully kynge, he woulde fighte with The first use of the currently used ‘gauntlet’ spelling hym at the vtteraunce, and threwe downe his gauntlet.” comes from the intriguingly named Increase Mather, in Another ancient custom of British fighting men was a The History of King Philip’s War, 1676: form of punishment in which the culprit was made to “They stripped them naked, and caused them to run run stripped to the waist between two rows of men who the Gauntlet.” whipped and beat him as he passed by. These beatings Some writers, recognising that ‘gauntlet’ was used in were extremely severe and the victims often died as error, continued to use the ‘gantelope’ version into the a result - and many of those that didn’t may well have 18th and 19th centuries - well after the word was archaic wished they had, as survivors were sometimes executed and otherwise unused; for example, Henry Fielding in afterwards. This punishment is the source of the term The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling , 1749: ‘running the gauntlet’ and was used by both the British “Some said he ought to be tied neck and heels; others that he deserved to run the gantlope.” army and navy. It would be natural to assume that gauntlets were used Any such attempts are now long abandoned and we are in the beatings and that ‘running the gauntlet’ derived left with a ‘gauntlet’ phrase that has nothing to do with from that. In fact, that’s not the case and neither the gauntlets. punishment nor the phrase have anything to do with

when you gotta go... A tourist in London decides to skip his tour group and explore the city on his own. He wanders around, seeing the sights, occasionally stopping at a quaint British pub to soak up the local culture, chat with the locals, and have a few pints of stout. After a while, he finds himself in a very nice neighborhood with big, stately residences... no pubs, no stores, no restaurants, and worst of all NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS. He really, really has to go, after all those drinks. He finds a narrow side street, with high walls surrounding the adjacent buildings and decides to use the wall to solve his problem. As he is unzipping, he is tapped on the shoulder by a London police officer, who says, “I say, sir, you simply cannot do that here, you know.” “I’m very sorry, officer,” replies the tourist, “but I really, really have to go, and I just can’t find a public restroom.” “Ah, yes,” said the policeman. “Just follow me”. He leads the tourist down a back delivery alley to a gate, which he opens. “In there,” points the policeman. “Go ahead sir, anywhere you like.” The fellow enters and finds himself in the most beautiful garden he has ever seen. Manicured grass lawns, statuary, fountains, sculptured hedges, and huge beds of gorgeous flowers, all in perfect bloom. Since he has the policeman’s blessing, he relieves himself and feels much more comfortable. As he goes back through the gate, he says to the police officer, “That was really decent of you... is that what you call English hospitality?” “No sir,” replied the police officer, “that is what we call the French Embassy.”

As he’s getting up to get a snack, he stops and asks, “Jesus, what is the meaning of life?” To which Jesus replies,”You slave in the sun to support the ones you love. You make money so you can buy things for your family to keep them happy.” The man asks,”Jesus, why is life so hard?” To which Jesus replies,”That, no one may ever know. You have to overcome many obstacles to be successful.” The man asks again,”How was the universe created?” Jesus replies,”I’m sorry, señor, but can you stop asking questions? If you need anything or have a question, feel free to ask me.” he says. The guy walks along the beach, has a few drinks with a nice girl. He walks over a hill, when he sees a hole in the ground, full with tormented people, flames rising up from the hole. The guy runs towards the beach until he finds Satan. “Hey, I found this hole and all these people are being tormented... What´s that about?” “Oh,” Satan says, “that´s for the Christians, they want it that way.”

to hull

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas naked truth Tomorrow - July 9th - hundreds of people will bare all in Hull to take part in an open air photo shoot. New York based artist Spencer Tunick has already taken over 90 such photos world wide, using masses of volunteers who are prepared to strip in the name of art and be arranged into landscape like compositions. Imagine for example masses of bare bottoms arranged to resemble a sea of pebbles. Anyway Tunick will be creating his new work entitled ‘Sea of Hull’ to celebrate Hull City of Culture 2017. Volunteers will be covered in body makeup and then assembled to form abstract shapes in the colours of the sea. At least the makeup will help to disguise the goose bumps, and the completed art work will no doubt take pride of place in family albums for future generations to marvel at. ‘Look son - that’s your great grandma’s left buttock there - 20th row down and 15th from the left.’ Never let it be said that Hull folk don’t care about their art, for as well as the Tunick project the city is also now host to a display of moths. The idea was sound. It is 75 years since Hull lass Amy Johnson, who made the first solo flight from England to Australia in 1930, was killed during a short routine flight in 1941. As part of a two month festival in her honour up to 60 decorated moths are adorning buildings around the city. There are also odd moths in other towns such as Sheffield, where Amy went to University, and Croydon, where her famous flight began. One particular moth is even named ‘Flight over Thailand’, where one of her stop offs en route to Darwin in 1930 was at Bangkok. The moths are of course meant to represent the Gypsy Moth plane which Amy flew to Australia, but although the moths are impressively large and brightly decorated they bear no resemblance whatsoever to a Gypsy Moth, looking more like fat Delta wing cockroaches. Still, it’s the thought that counts, and you can check them out

simply by searching for ‘amy johnson moths.’ In the aftermath of the EU referendum it is embarrassing to see the way in which some migrant people living in Britain are now facing racist slurs. By coincidence I came across a passage in a book by James Patterson, entitled ‘Alex Cross’s Trial.’ Set in the early 1900’s the main character, a Washington lawyer, is sent to investigate allegations of mob lynchings in Mississippi. During the journey South he gets into conversation with a fellow traveller, who describes what he sees as a root cause of racism as follows: ‘The white man doesn’t hate the coloured man......the white man is just afraid of the coloured man. Not afraid in the way you think. He’s not afraid the coloured man’s going to rape his wife or his daughter................ what genuinely scares the white man is that the coloured is going to suck up all the jobs from the whites.’ Americas’ race issues of course continued into the 1960’s, and probably beyond, although the lynchings are said to have ended in the 1930’s. They also focused on black people. But it is unsettling to realise that if we substitute ‘white european’ for ‘black’, and parts of Britain for Americas’ southern states, that perceived root cause, a fear for jobs and essential services, rings true.

national pride

Country to be renamed ‘United Kingdom of Wales and the other ones’ england

Left: A giant leek, soon to become the national vegetable

Following the Welsh football team’s stunning victory against Belgium in the European Championships, the entire country is to be renamed in their honour. “Yeah, that’s fair,” said nit-crusher Simon Williams. “I mean, I’ve been up all night scouring the family tree to see if I can find any connection to Wales. “My Uncle once went on holiday to Pembrokeshire, but I’m not sure that counts, so changing the country name will hopefully make everyone think I’m Welsh.” Following a week of dreadful posh people squabbling over who can lie to the public in the most convincing fashion, the Wales team progression to the semi-finals has united the entire population behind them. “Can we make Gareth Bale Prime Minister?”

asked wasp-wrangler Eleanor Gay. “I mean, he seems ever so nice, he’s very popular and has got a tremendous left-foot. “Which was always a weakness of David Cameron, I thought.” The formal renaming of the country will be marked by a ceremony in which Queen sacrifices a sheep to Tom Jones. Following the name change, ‘boyo’ will replace ‘mate’ as the national friendly form of address between friends, and both men and women will be expected to grow a beard like a Victorian cricketer and sing lustily at every opportunity.
